18 October 2011FCC Cell Phone Safety Guidelines Underestimate Harmful Radiation Absorbed by Children and Small Adults, Says New Analysis
READ FULL POST: http://electromagnetichealth.org/electromagnetic-health-blog/fcc-limit/
A new paper published online today in Electromagnetic Biology and Medicine demonstrates children and small adults
absorb significantly more cell phone radiation than had been previously understood by using the conventional and widely used
assessment methodology, the Specific Anthropomorphic Mannequin (i.e. plastic model of a brain, or SAM),to assess the "Specific
Absorption Rate", known as the SAR.
This study is important because it calls into question present cell phone exposure
guidelines from an engineering, not health, point of view.
Computer simulation of radiation penetration, in contrast to estimating radiation
exposure using the fluid-filled plastic mannequin, demonstrates much greater
radiation exposures, particularly for children and small adults, than previously
understood.
The study shows that when phones are placed in the pocket or against the body
the current FCC guidelines for radiation heating effects are presently being
violated, and suggests that different SAR exposure guidelines should be
established for people who are smaller than the mannequin, including children
and smaller adults.
Experts say it is unlikely many cell phones on the market today would pass the
FCC certification process with the amount of radiation now being demonstrated
with this methodology.
The computer simulation methodology, known as Finite Difference Time Domain
(FDTD), is an FCC-approved SAR assessment methodology. It offers 3 orders of
magnitude higher resolution in the brain than the present methodology and can
be used to measure radiation impacts on different parts of the body, as well,
including especially sensitive tissues, such as the testes and the eyes.
The higher resolution SAR assessment methodology, the FDTD, is presently
used widely in research settings, including at the FDA.
The authors of the new study (http://snurl.com/19xis1) recommend this more
accurate cell phone radiation exposure methodology replace the SAM
mannequin methodology.
It is important to understand that globally accepted physics metrics are now
indicating common cell phone use exposes users to radiation levels sufficiently
powerful to cause tissue damage from heating.
Previously, the focus of the cell phone safety debate has been on biological
effects from the less well understood, but equally important, 'non-heating' effects
from the radiation, which are not addressed by either of the above risk
assessment methodologies, and are a separate subject.
Another issue, rarely discussed, is that our prevalent method of cell phone use
(phone placed against the head) uses more energy from battery drain than
communications using a wired headset. Using wired headsets not only will
greatly reduce health risk, the subject of the current paper in Electromagnetic
Biology and Medicine, but will also be more energy efficient on a very significant
scale, given there are 5 billion cell phone users worldwide. On both grounds,
governments have a mandate to act now to reconsider the mode in which we as
a society use cellular communications.
It is expected that governments globally will want to reassess the extent of cell
phone proliferation, and especially use of cell phones by children, and to
recommend wired headset use in light of this important re-analysis of cell phone
radiation risk.

radiation, especially in children" by Om P. Gandhi, L. Lloyd Morgan, Alvaro Augusto

Alvaro Augusto de Salles, Ph.D., Professor, Electrical Engineering Dept., Federal
University of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brazil and one of the paper's authors,
says:
"The higher risk of tissue damage from common cell phone use demonstrated in
this study using the computer simulation method of SAR assessment suggests
prudent public health policies, globally, would call for cell phones to be
manufactured without the ability to use the phone against the head, nor with a
speakerphone, but only allow communication with a wired headset. This would
dramatically lower risk of biological, and genetic, damage to the population, and
to children and other especially vulnerable populations, such as pregnant
women, by keeping the radiation, thereby, away from both the head and body."

Fletcher taken to task for column
http://www.bclocalnews.com/bc_cariboo/100milefreepress/opinion/131562243.html
This is unbelievable! Did you know that there is a wired version of the smart meter so people do not have to be irradiated in their own homes by the wireless kind? Apparently it is called 'Itron' and apparently it is is comparable in cost to the wireless type we have all been forced to accept (under threat of having our power turned off) along with all of its dangerous health effects. Please pass this message on to others and communicate your absolute displeasure with your Hydro provider about why you were not given this safer choice. Ask to have your wireless meter changed immediately to a wired one.
http://www.merrittnews.net/article/20111012/MERRITT0101/111019951/-1/merritt01/merritt-council-to-request-wired-smart-meters-from-bc-government
... The resolution, motioned by Coun. Shelley Sanders, will contain a clause saying council "appreciates" that a wired smart meter comes at a higher cost than BC Hydro's current wireless "open way" meters. However, BC Hydro has not revealed the exact costs of a wired versus wireless meter.
"That's incorrect," said Coun. Mike Goetz of the alleged higher costs for wired. "They do, they (BC Hydro) just choose not to use it."
Toronto Hydro and other utilities, for example, offer a wired smart meter (Itron) to customers. It can communicate back and forth with the utility through a phone line or modem that is hooked up to the meter....
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Health Canada warnings on cell phones need to be clearer and widely heard Contributed by Carol Hughes, MP Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing

In the summer of 2010 I wrote about a group of parents in Collingwood who were fighting to have wifi taken out of their children's school. I heard their story while sitting as a member of a parliamentary committee investigating the safety of the microwave radiation emitted by wireless devices like cell phones and modems. The committee heard contradictory evidence and warnings from scientists, groups and individuals. There were claims that Canada's code that regulates the limit of radiation any device can emit was not strict enough - Health Canada officials disputed this. Much has changed in the story since that column. Most significantly, the World Health Organization reclassified microwave radiation from wireless devices as a Class 2b possible carcinogen. This means there is enough evidence that links it to cancer to merit a warning. In response Health Canada now says your child should limit their time on a cell phone. Does that mean adults should too? It does mean that wifi, baby monitors, cordless phones and cell phones pose enough of a risk to your children that you should consider limiting their exposure at home. It's as simple as turning wifi off when not in use, or switching to hardwired systems widely available at electronics stores. Cell phones can be set to "Airplane Mode" if children sleep on or near their phone. This cancels the radiation, but still allows the phone to perform other applications or be used as an alarm. This is one area in which Canada is not a leader and has some catching up to do with European countries especially on warnings. The Council of Europe, which advises the Parliament of the European Union, says all schools should opt for hard-wired internet connections and abandon wifi in these settings. Here in Canada there has been some movement on the issue. The Saanich District School Board on Vancouver Island officially banned wifi in all elementary schools last April. In September, a private school in Collingwood pulled out its wifi in favour of hardwiring followed by another one in Peterborough in October. For some this is a difficult issue. These devices are convenient and even emblematic of our modern times. Despite that, we cannot let convenience trump prudence especially when it comes to the health of children. Health Canada's warning may not have been heard by enough people and should be more widely broadcast. People need to be made aware of what the risks are and that there are safer ways to enjoy the benefits of wireless devices. Question Was this a stroke or was it really microwave sickness? The symptoms are very similar to those reported by several electro hyper-sensitive victims, when exposed to high EMF levels. The Socialist member said, "Two scientific studies have indicated the first early warnings on the carcinogenic effects of the use of mobile phones particularly by children and pregnant women.
"In many cases in the past, our failure to react to early warnings led to public health tragedies.
"Based on the precautionary principle, the commission should immediately inform the public on ways to reduce exposure to mobile phone radiation, reduce the radiation exposure limits and encourage independent scientific studies to further examine these first warnings."
His demand was enthusiastically endorsed by Rivasi, a French Greens deputy, who said, "We are now beyond the alert phase regarding the abusive use of mobile phones.
"Brain tumours have been definitively, scientifically proved. From now on, this is no longer the principle of precaution that must be applied, but the prevention principle.
"It is now time to act. European recommendations have to be revised and research must be developed on the other effects of electromagnetic waves on living beings.
"In addition to cancer or childhood leukaemia, some studies show the link between exposure to these radiations and Alzheimer's disease, sleep disorders or psychological problems."
The conference also heard from Ries, a Belgian ALDE member and parliament's 2009 rapporteur on "concerns about the health effects of electromagnetic fields".
She said, "The limits of public exposure to electromagnetic fields haven't changed in Europe since 1999. At this time, wireless devices were not used everyday.
"We cannot wait or delay these decisions until later."
Elsewhere, Lennart Hardell, professor of oncology at the university hospital of Örebro in Sweden, told the conference, "Our studies showed an increased risk for malignant brain tumours and acoustic neuroma and use of mobile or cordless phones.
"The risk increased with latency time and cumulative use. Highest risk was found in the group with first use of a wireless phone before 20 years of age."
Further comment came from David Gee, European environment agency senior advisor on science, policy and emerging issues, who told the conference that mobile phones have "numerous social, economic and even environmental benefits".
He went on, "However, there is significant disagreement in the scientific community about whether mobile phone use increases the risk of head cancers.
"We recommend using the precautionary principle to guide policy decisions in cases like this.
"This means that although our understanding is incomplete, this should not prevent policymakers from taking preventative action."
