Wrote this in response to Anne-Marie Lenko's letter which referred to Safety Code 6 and the WHO. Ms. Lenko appears to be a colleague of Michelle Herlihy, one of the proponents of the Wi-Fi implementation:

Marie-Anne Lenko is fundamentally correct in her assertion that Wi-Fi concerns should be directed at those who regulate electromagnetic emissions. The unfortunate truth is that Health Canada is wilfully ignoring the sea of red flags around this issue. The Safety Code 6 Ms. Lenko refers to allows for a one degree increase in the temperature of our flesh over a six minute period. It does not deal with the constant 7x24 non-thermal (non-heating) exposures from cell phones, cordless phones, wi-fi and cell towers that we deal with in the real world.

Regarding the World Health Organization's (WHO) stance on exposure to wireless radiation from cell phones, wi-fi, etc: Whistleblower Barry Trower, a retired British military scientist in microwave and stealth warfare has reviewed the WHO's database of studies on health effects from electromagnetic radiation and is "bemused" by the fact that 80 percent of the WHO's studies show deleterious health effects. Yet for reasons we don't understand, the WHO continues to give the thumbs up to Wi-Fi, cell towers and cell phones.

I am 12 year senior I.T. Support Tech who has installed hundreds of Wi-Fi networks. After personally experiencing health effects from wireless microwave radiation and also looking at the reams of scientific literature on this issue I can say beyond the shadow of a doubt that we have a monumental health issue on our hands that is only going to get worse as time goes on if nothing is done to reduce our exposure. Our bodies have simply not been able to adapt to the enormous increase in man-made wireless radiation over the last 25 years.

From a technical and biological standpoint, thousands of peer reviewed, published studies have documented health effects at levels far below those of conventional Wi-Fi networks, cell towers and cell phones. As a network tech, I can tell you that even when Wi-Fi networks are in standby mode and are not transmitting any email or web browsing data, the beacon that advertises the name of the network that allows computers and other devices to connect to the network, transmits at full power - this is why almost all who are Electrohypersensitive (EHS) feel ill even when in the presence of a Wi-Fi network that is in standby mode.

Not a week goes by that I don't meet or am approached by at least one person whose health has gone South because of exposure to wireless technologies, which include cordless home phones, cell phones and Wi-Fi. Poor and broken sleep, ringing in the ears, headaches, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, rashes, many cases of heart arrhythmias - this cluster of symptoms have the majority of our health professionals dumbfounded. Those who are EHS are the proverbial "canaries in the coal mine" and as time goes on more and more people will become sensitive. This is not simply a case of a few sensitive people – we are looking at up to 35 percent of the population that is already sensitive, based on the number of people experiencing the "cluster" of symptoms associated with this condition. Most of them have not connected the dots and realized what is causing their symptoms, and when they are away from the various sources of radiation, they quickly recover and feel better.

Since we cannot rely on Health Canada and the World Health Organization to advise us, it is up to municipalities and especially schools to "do the right thing" and exercise the precautionary principle by removing wi-fi and other wireless technologies, even if it appears to be a temporary "step backwards". I doubt that local business and our education system will grind to a halt.

Finally, the beach has historically been the place to "unplug" and enjoy the sun and surf. Given how much we all use computers and cell phones on a daily basis, wouldn't it be nice to get away from them, at least for a while?

This morning  CBC Radio News reported that WiFi is available at the Pinery Provincial Park here in Ontario. The Pinery Provincial Park is located near Grand Bend, Ontario, on Lake Huron. It is described on the park website,

Pinery's natural features are staggering – 2,532 ha (6,330 acres) in size; over 757 plant, 325 bird and 60 butterfly species to name just a few groups; a globally rare Oak Savanna ecosystem; freshwater coastal dunes; habitat for endangered species; and the largest protected forest in southwestern Ontario.

The recreational opportunities in Pinery are equally diverse – 10 km beach; 10 nature trails; 38 km of ski trails; canoeing, kayaking and hydrobiking; fishing; cycling; and one of the largest year-round interpretive programs in Ontario.

The facilities within Pinery are also impressive – wheelchair accessible general store and restaurant; laundromats; firewood; picnic shelter; rental shops for canoes, kayaks, hydrobikes, bicycles and cross-country skis; Savanna Shores nature gift shop; and year-round Visitor Centre featuring nature exhibits.

The many amenities within the park offer flexibility and convenience – 3 campgrounds; with a total of 1,000 campsites including 400 electrical sites and many pull-through sites; 10 youth group sites; trailer sanitation station; flush toilets and showers; and 12 yurts with heated tent, bunk-beds, electricity, BBQ and picnic shelter provided! There is so much to do at Pinery that you will have no trouble finding activities to occupy your time, whether your stay is for one day, one week or even a month!

So Pinery is hardly a wilderness park….in fact it is fairly close to such urban centres as Sarnia, Windsor, and London….and its sand beach is famous….but WiFi in a provincial park? That doesn't make much sense….I admit that I love to spend time on the Net as much as anyone….but really….when somebody is away on holidays and camping out….trying to experience the great outdoors…do we really need to be able to get on our computers that bad? The CBC report said that this is only the first of several provincial parks that will have WiFi access….now granted WiFi is only available near the Visitor's Centre apparently at Pinery….but as the province gets more "coverage" for things such as cell phone and satellite TV….and these devices become more technically advanced….one can only imagine the day when you might find the following scenario:

Somewhere in the "wilds" of Algonquin Park….on a backcountry canoe route…two figures are crouched around the glowing campfire….no make that the glowing portable TV….busy on their portable laptops. John the stockbroker is busy trying to catch up on the latest market trends….Bill the teacher is sending in his daily trip report to one of the Internet canoeing based forums he frequents. Half way through his data entry, Bill's cell phone rings, with a ringtone from Dan Gibson's Solitudes. Soon Bill is in full conversation ordering a delivery pizza for the next night's meal….with delivery guaranteed in a day or the pizza is free.

Bill: "That's right….we'll be on North Tea Lake….on the first island….yeah the one with the great beach. The deluxe with double cheese. But no anchovies. Tomorrow night at six sharp. See you then."

John: "Was that Algonquin Outfitters?….are they delivering the pizza?"

Bill: "Yeah. But they said it might be an hour late….depends on how busy that last portage is. Are you having trouble getting a signal for your computer?….I keep losing the dlink signal….might have to try my external antenna….really don't feel like climbing a tree."

John: "No I'm fine….almost as fast as at home….nothing like keeping a check on those stocks. And I thought these huge old pines might block out my signal. Or the rocks would. But they've done a great job setting up this WiFi throughout the park."

Bill: "Yeah…good to stay connected. I think they plan on wiring up every other tree by next year."

John: "Just wonderful. And it's great to get away from it all, isn't it?"

Perhaps a bit far fetched….but then one of the problems many camps have today is trying to get kids to disconnect….to not use cell phones or the computer….some camps ban such devices….or limit the times allowed for use….some report the kids bringing more than one cell phone (in case the first gets confiscated)….or even kids texting from one cabin to another.

So I find this report of WiFi in a provincial park somewhat incredulous….maybe it would be better if we "reconnected" with the outdoors instead. Mother Nature has her own signals….her own messages….far better than any on the Net….or on Twitter. All we have to do is to take the time to listen.

Paddles up until later then….and here's hoping you get away from it all….even just for a while.

Dear Members of Council:

I have provided each of you and the Clerk with a compact disc containing several documents that illustrate the dangers and adverse health effects of electro magnetic radiation (EMR). By reading the information, you should begin to understand the great dangers caused by exposure to EMR and, in particular, radiation in the microwave frequencies. Please feel free to copy these discs and provide them to your friends, relatives, and constituents, because the information may help to save them from serious harm.

In 1962 the US Defence department learned that Soviet authorities were beaming microwaves from across the street directly into the US embassy in Moscow. Measurements taken at the time found that the intensity reaching the Embassy was approximately 500 times less than the US standard for occupational exposure. The death of the U.S. Ambassador, two other employees and illnesses of other staff, caused Operation Pandora to be launched and scientific research to be conducted. Analysis of the original data by Prof. Goldsmith concluded about the Moscow study that, evidence was suggestive for four health effects, (a) chromosomal changes, (b) hematological changes, (c) reproductive effects, and (d) increased cancer incidence from the microwave irradiation.

In 1972, Lt. Zorach Glaser, Ph.D., of the U.S. Navy Medical Research Institute, collected over two thousand references to the biological responses to radio frequency and microwave radiation, paying particular attention to the effects on man of non ionizing radiation at these frequencies.

In 1973, researchers from Queen's University, Kingston, provided the Government of Canada with a document entitled Environmental Pollution by Microwave Radiation – A Potential Threat to Human Health. It states:

"In view of the expected proliferation of microwave devices in many different applications, a substantial increase in microwave background activity is feared that may endanger human health. On this basis strict control of the use of these devices must be introduced while present safety standards are revised and extensive research is conducted into long term effects of exposure to low intensity microwave radiation. In particular, a study of possible accumulative effects of microwave radiation directly or indirectly through sensitization must be conducted".

I have searched records from that time onwards and have been unable to find any scientific research from Canada or anywhere in the world that states that microwave radiation is not dangerous and does not cause biological effects. Also since that time, microwave-emitting devices have proliferated in our homes, our businesses, and our environment at the same time that many new and serious "modern" illnesses have appeared. Other serious illnesses have become much more widespread, as microwave-emitting technology has become widely used.

A modern update of scientific evidence, entitled The Bio Initiative Report, was published in 2007. It clearly demonstrates that electro magnetic radiation causes serious adverse health effects. The report refers to over 2000 peer reviewed scientific papers and it can be accessed at www.bioinitiative.org .

In 2002, the Frieburger appeal was launched in Germany. As of 2009, approximately 1,000 physicians and 35,000 persons, most of whom are from the health care system, had signed the document. They were greatly concerned about a dramatic rise in severe and chronic diseases, which they related to pulsed high frequency microwave radiation as emitted by cell phones, cordless DECT telephones, antenna masts (and Wi Fi). The following symptoms have been associated with microwave radiation:

• Learning, concentration and behavioral disorders (ADD etc.).
• Extreme fluctuations in blood pressure.
• Heart rhythm disorders.
• Heart attacks and strokes among an increasingly younger population.
• Brain-degenerative diseases (e.g. Alzheimer's) and epilepsy.
• Cancerous afflictions: leukemia, brain tumors.

There is also an ever-increasing occurrence of various disorders, often misdiagnosed in patients as psychosomatic:

• Headaches, migraines.
• Chronic exhaustion.
• Inner agitation.
• Sleeplessness, daytime sleepiness.
• Tinnitus.
• Susceptibility to infection.
• Nervous and connective tissue pains, for which the usual causes do not explain even the most conspicuous symptoms.

Symptoms similar to these, and many others, have been reported around the world by people who have been exposed to supposedly safe levels of microwave radiation. You may be aware that our Federal Government regulates use of microwave frequencies and sets safety standards. You may also expect those standards to be safe, but that is simply not the case. Canadian microwave exposure standards are among the worst in the world. They are based purely on heating affects at very high exposure levels. Canadian standards completely ignore the serious biological effects that have been demonstrated by scientists and reported by victims of exposure from many different countries. Very serious health effects have been found to occur at exposure levels that are just a small fraction of the safety levels currently used by the Federal Government.

This is the type of radiation that city owned Festival Hydro and city owned Rhyzome Networks have started to install throughout Statford in the form of Smart Meters and city wide Wi Fi. They are doing this with only very recent notice through newspaper stories and with no public debate. They are also ignoring all the scientific research and evidence about the adverse health effects caused by electro magnetic radiation.

The massive spread of wireless technology using microwave radiation during the last few years may be the biggest threat that Stratford and its citizens have ever faced. The eventual cost in illness and early deaths may not become fully apparent for several more years, yet there are considerable warning signs. The evidence from independent scientists indicates the strong possibility of a severe health system crisis in a few years time. The possibility of a significant increase in cancer cases and other serious illnesses may overwhelm the health care system.

An even more sinister consequence of microwave exposure may be the reduction of male and female fertility. Studies have already shown serious concerns for reproduction. If this occurs and we no longer have enough births to keep the population stable, Stratford will go into serious decline, which may harm the city forever. Recent news reports have already reported a steep decline in births during the last few years.

The effects of exposure to electro magnetic radiation have often been compared to those of cigarettes and smoking. Just as cigarette companies and governments stated that smoking was safe, the wireless industry and our governments are saying the same for wireless exposure. We are now aware of the terrible toll taken by tobacco, which caused terrible diseases and huge health costs, but the costs of wireless use are likely to be much worse. Babies exposed to DECT baby monitors, DECT cordless phones and Wi Fi, may be absorbing electrical pollution to the equivalent of smoking fifty cigarettes a day. Children today are suffering allergies, autism, A.D.D, brain cancer and other modern illnesses, at far higher rates than just a few years ago. Exposure from a citywide Wi Fi system and from Smart Meters would ensure that there is no safe place or safe time for anyone to avoid microwave radiation in Stratford.

Scientific research has found strong similarities between low level exposure of microwave radiation and harm to health caused by pesticides. It is ironic that Stratford has banned pesticides in our lawns and parks, yet we are filling our entire living environment with an electro magnetic pollutant that is potentially much more harmful. Our bodies and our brains work by sending very tiny electrical impulses. To allow strong external microwave radiation to upset that balance and cause biological effects is very misguided, and should be avoided.

Stratford citizens are already in great danger from microwave devices in their homes, businesses, recreation facilities and the outdoor environment. Most people are unaware about the long-term dangers caused by exposure to microwave radiation because those who should be sounding the warning have hidden this danger. There is an urgent need for the City of Stratford to be proactive and provide leadership and public education on this most serious subject.

The installation of Smart Meters and citywide Wi Fi poses a significant new risk to Stratford. Smart Meters do not use safe technology; they operate by sending information by microwave radiation at regular intervals. The additional radiation will constantly be turning on and off, constantly sending spikes of dangerous radiation through our electrical systems throughout our homes and our community. They are likely to cause serious sleeping difficulties, neurological problems, and several of the unpleasant symptoms listed above. The long-term harm from this technology is likely to cause damage to our immune systems, many serious illnesses and early death.

The City of Stratford wants to be a leader in advanced technology systems city, yet has not considered the drastic cost to our health. This is careless and irresponsible! Modern technology is important and should be used, but it must be used only when it is proven to be safe. It cannot be said that Smart Meters and Wi Fi systems are safe. There is a huge amount of information that already shows that microwave radiation and this technology is dangerous, while there is nothing to prove that it is safe!

To radiate and endanger the entire population of Stratford for the distinction of being technologically advanced is close to insanity. I request to know what amount of insurance Stratford holds to cover future harm that may be caused by radiation from city owned or authorized Wi Fi systems and Smart Meters. This is a very important consideration because most insurers will not insure against this danger, as it is too risky.

The decision by Festival Hydro to install Smart Meters and a citywide Fi system without fully investigating the health consequences is negligent. I have had written communications with Mayor Dan Mathieson, Paul West and Bill Zehr of Festival Hydro and have provided them with documented information about the dangers of microwave radiation that will be emitted by the new systems. There has been no move to stop the installation process or to fully investigate the potential adverse health effects caused by Smart Meters or Wi Fi.

Mr. Bill Zehr, President of Festival Hydro, took three weeks to answer my letter, and even then failed to answer questions concerning health effects and costs of the Smart Meter system. He appears to have failed to adhere to the Festival Hydro Mission Statement as set out on their internet site (safe power and being direct, trustworthy and truthful). What is he hiding from me, and from the citizens of Stratford?

Because of the significant health and safety threat to Stratford residents, I request that Stratford Council take the following important steps to ensure safety of Stratford residents.

• Educate yourselves and your constituents about the dangers of microwave radiation.

• Order Festival Hydro to stop installing Smart Meters and a citywide Wi Fi system, until a public investigation of the dangers is concluded.
• If Smart Meters must be installed because of provincial legislation, find a safe alternative that does not emit microwave and radio frequency radiation.
• Order the City Health Department to thoroughly investigate the health effects of electro magnetic radiation and recommend ways that Council can ensure better safety for its residents.
• Develop bylaws that will ban Wi Fi and other forms of dangerous microwave radiation from city streets, workplaces, and anywhere that the public has access.

I am a retired police investigator and a victim of electro magnetic radiation. I have spent more than six years learning about the dangers of electro magnetic radiation. I am in touch with scientists, researchers, health care professionals and many victims from around the world. Electro magnetic radiation within the City of Stratford is probably the most important issue with which you, as Council Members, will be involved. It affects the health and safety of every single resident, as well as animals, birds, insects, and the future of the City. I ask that Stratford City Council discuss the problem in depth and come to a resolution that will make the city safer. I request to address Council on this matter as soon as possible.

Last year, I attended a most interesting and informative evening of talks, held in Leixlip, on the risk to health of mobile phones, mobile phone masts and wireless technology. The event was chaired by Peter Weigel, on behalf of concerned parents who were objecting to the erection of a sixth mast in Leixlip. The principal speaker was Professor Olle Johansson, from the Karolinska Institute, in Sweden.

The Karolinska Institute, one of the most famous of Europe's medical institutes, has been testing the effects of microwaves on human beings for decades.

One test, carried out on children, revealed that one minute's use of a mobile phone resulted in changes in the brain waves of the child which lasted for up to one hour. Professor Johansson warned about the long-term effects of exposure to the electromagnetic waves from mobile phones, masts and indiscriminate use of wireless technology, where radiation could even result in irreversible infertility in succeeding generations.

Guest speaker, John Ryan, a Tipperary farmer, backed up Professor Johansson's very learned illustrated talk with personal experience of the effect on himself and his prize herd of cattle, of a Vodafone mobile phone mast which he allowed on his land, in 2003.

He immediately began to feel unwell, frequently collapsed without warning and was unable to sleep. A young member of his family had regular nosebleeds, lasting up to two hours. His prize herd of cattle began to give birth to deformed calves.

He appeared, with other victims, on television, to tell of their experiences. Nobody in government wanted to hear. It took years of campaigning to force Vodafone, finally, in 2007, to remove the mast, but the effect on the DNA of his cattle has been lasting. Cows now can carry the calves for only eight months. If this happens to animals, it could happen to women carrying children, if they are forced to live near phone masts.

Wireless technology used in various situations, such as installing house phones, particularly DECT and other cordless phones, house alarms, etc is being linked to cancer of the oesophagus, deafness, brain tumours and the latest, cancer of the salivary glands, unprotected by the skull against radiation.

VERY recently, MEP Kathy Sinnott spoke in the Euro Parliament on this danger to health of wireless technology. Many European countries are outlawing its indiscriminate use, especially in schools and hospitals. The EU Parliament voted by over 500 votes to under 30, to ban all phone masts from schools and retirement homes, including hospitals and nursing homes.

It is, therefore, not only totally irresponsible but also illegal to have broadband wireless masts on top of school buildings, or anywhere near the old and vulnerable.

The internet is most useful in providing example after example of the widespread concern about radiation sickness, resulting from exposure to electronic waves way beyond the safety levels for such.

Con Colbert, Honorary Secretary of the Irish Electromagnet Victims Network spoke after Professor Johansson, about the work which the Network is doing, helped by IDEA, Irish Doctors' Environmental Association, which investigates cases of electromagnetic radiation sickness, amongst others. Con travels widely to help those who need it. A victim of electromagnetic sensitivity himself, he has sympathy with other sufferers, unlike the government official who told John Ryan that "commercialization is more important than your health" and advised him "don't look at the mast", displaying colossal ignorance of the whole issue and reprehensible unconcern for the health of the electorate.

On February 10th 2009, Dr Thomas Rau, Medical Director of the world-renowned Paracelsus Clinic, in Lustmuhle, Switzerland, (www.paracelsus.ch) declared that to expose children in schools to radiation, known to impair brain function and learning, is "criminal". He states: "It is unethical to expose children to electromagnetic load in this way. We know that power stations for electric waves like mobile phones are hurting the brains of children so, to put such stations info schools is really very, very, very bad...

"If you install mobile phone towers which radiate to the children, their intelligence, their brain capacity decreases. You will have more ADD children, you will have less function of the brain, which in the long term reflects upon the intelligence of the children, on the possibility for teachers to really teach children and, in the long term, we shall have dumb children."

THE reality of the health consequences of electromagnetic radiation will eventually have to be faced and only active pressure on government, which pulls in €42 million in Ireland, from taxes on phone masts, will get results.

It is estimated that 3-8% of populations in developed countries experience serious electro-hypersensitivity today and 35% experience mild symptoms. With increasing electromagnetic field exposures, these numbers will increase, as will the cost of health care involved, says Dr Rau.

President's Cancer Panel: Environmentally caused cancers are 'grossly underestimated' and 'needlessly devastate American lives.'

I was so convinced about the dangers of electromagnetic radiation from cell phones, routers and DECT* phones, that I turned off my router, plugged my computer into the modem and took both kids to Staples today to buy two AT&T phones that had cords. I also purchased a 25 foot handset coil cord and a 100 foot cord so my wired phone could function very much like a cordless phone and be dragged around the house wherever I need to be. It is very retro and back to the future at my house. And, like going gluten free, it is kind of fun if you can spring for a new phone and a bunch of cords--and just go with it.

If I seem off my rocker and a little too enthusiastic about abandoning my WiFi and cellular technology as much as possible, I am in good company. According to an article from GQ magazine titled "Warning: Your Cell Phone May Be Hazardous to Your Health."

"The concern about Wi-Fi is being taken seriously in Europe. In April 2008, the national library of France, citing possible "genotoxic effects," announced it would shut down its Wi-Fi system, and the staff of the storied Library of Sainte-Geneviève in Paris followed up with a petition demanding the disconnection of Wi-Fi antennas and their replacement by wired connections. Several European governments are already moving to prohibit Wi-Fi in government buildings and on campuses, and the Austrian Medical Association is lobbying for a ban of all Wi-Fi systems in schools, citing the danger to children's thinner skulls and developing nervous systems."

Read the article in GQ magazine for more information. The thing is, even if your kids don't use a cell phone, they are exposed to this electromagnetic radiation through Wi-Fi/routers and cell phone towers. Of course, not everyone is in danger. Some people are more sensitive than others. But until there is more science on the risks we need to ere on the side of caution--especially when it comes to our kids. I also worry about the many NYC schools which have installed Wi-Fi in their haste to keep up with other schools.

 

My neighbor has a machine that measures the amount of electromagnetic radiation in a room. According to the machine she has, a safe environment is under 1,900 units. With my router and DECT phone and two computers which had airports on, my office was registering 9,000 units. But as soon as I unplugged the router and DECT phone and turned off the airports on my computers, it went down to 300.

Thanks H.R. for my new wired existence. I don't expect everyone to abandon their cellular connections, but Huffington Post has a great article called "The Unplug and Recharge Challenge: Breaking Our Always-Connected Addiction" that might inspire some to unplug for 30 minutes a day.

Tackle environmental cancers, Obama urged

The role played by chemicals, gases and radiation in causing cancer has been underestimated, and not enough is being done about it, a U.S. presidential advisory panel on cancer says.

A report by the two-member panel — Reducing Environmental Cancer Risk: What We Can Do Now — was released Thursday.

"The true burden of environmentally induced cancer has been grossly underestimated," the authors said in a letter to President Barack Obama at the start of the report.

The report was written by Dr. LaSalle Leffall, professor at Howard University college of medicine in Washington and Margaret Kripke, an emeritus professor at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

"The American people — even before they are born — are bombarded continually with myriad combinations of these dangerous exposures," they said in the letter. "The Panel urges you most strongly to use the power of your office to remove the carcinogens and other toxins from our food, water, and air that needlessly increase health care costs, cripple our nation's productivity and devastate American lives."

Children are particularly vulnerable because of their smaller body mass and rapid physical development, which magnifies their vulnerability to carcinogens, and should be protected, according to the report.

The report recommends:

• Increasing research to determine the full extent of environmental influences on human health.

• Raising consumer awareness of environmental cancer risks and improve understanding and reporting of known prevention and protection efforts.

• Minimizing radiation exposure from medical sources, including a decision-making tool that considers each patient's cumulative lifetime radiation exposure. Measures would also include adding the estimated radiation doses from all tests as part of patient electronic health records.

• Improving testing for residential radon exposure and requiring all schools, daycare centres and workplaces to be tested regularly with the data made available to the public.

• Adopting long-term monitoring of electromagnetic energy exposure from cellphones and wireless technologies, given the rising use of these devices by young people.

Reacting to the report, the American Cancer Society said the panel downplayed known risks that cause most cancer cases, such as tobacco, alcohol, infections, hormones and sunlight.

"The report is most provocative when it restates hypotheses as if they were established facts," Dr. Michael Thun of the Cancer Society said in a statement.

He pointed to the panel's conclusion that environmentally induced cancer has been underestimated, saying it "reflects one side of a scientific debate that has continued for almost 30 years."

The torture of Canadian citizens in foreign lands and the torture of detained persons in Afghanistan has been a cause for major controversy involving the Government of Canada. While that situation is about actions taking place thousands of miles away, many persons 'at home' in Canada, are daily enduring a form of torture yet their plight is being largely ignored.

There is urgent need for the Government to assist these victims here in Canada.

The Government of Canada receives billions of dollars in license fees from companies that use wireless frequencies for cell phones and communication systems. Unfortunately, exposure to those frequencies has caused many Canadians to develop severe environmental and electro magnetic sensitivities. This is causing serious health and financial difficulties for those affected and their families.

Electro hypersensitivity can be a torturous experience. Victims may suffer severely from exposure to electro magnetic radiation, at levels, which the Government deems safe and which is regulated by the Federal Government. Victims constantly have to avoid exposure from electro magnetic fields, electrical fields and electro magnetic radiation to avoid further harm. This is becoming very difficult, as wireless communications and wireless devices are being used everywhere.

Many persons, who suffer from electro hyper-sensitivity (EHS), also suffer from multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS). This combination of EHS and MCS leaves victims in extreme peril. EHS and MCS are environmental sensitivities as recognized by the human rights commission. Some victims consider suicide, instead of enduring the continued torture of their existence. While little research has been done to discover why people become electrically sensitive, most victims can relate their illness to exposure from wireless or electrical sources. Some MCS cases may be caused or significantly affected by electrical and electro magnetic radiation.

I have suffered many of the known symptoms of electro hypersensitivity, which may also be known as microwave illness. Six years ago I retired from the Toronto Police Service and moved to a home where I was unknowingly exposed to dangerous electro magnetic radiation. For many months I experienced the agony associated with electro hypersensitivity.

My symptoms included: not being able to sleep, not being able to think clearly, constant headaches, nausea, ringing in the ears, joint aches, constant feeling of being unwell and cancer. It was like being tortured by dangerous and invisible forces within my own home and within Canada, yet receiving no help or advice from local and federal government departments.

After suffering from many harmful and unpleasant symptoms for a year and developing cancer, I made the difficult decision to leave my home. Within days my health improved, my electro hypersensitivity stabilized. It remains manageable as long as I avoid further strong exposure to electro magnetic fields and electro magnetic radiation. Many electro hypersensitive victims, do not have the financial ability to move from their homes to safety because they cannot work and have very limited income.

There are several people whose lives are in great danger and their suffering is immense. I ask that your government put aside a small percentage of the wireless licensing fees to assist those who are suffering. These victims must be protected from further exposure to electro magnetic radiation.

Through no fault of their own and because of a failure of the government to properly protect them, these persons are enduring a 'living hell' of torture in Canada. These people can be found in every geographic area of Canada and they all need assistance as soon as possible.

Money is needed immediately for safe housing, special treatment clinics, special protective clothing, monitoring equipment and special EMF mitigating equipment. There are people who are unable to attend at doctors' offices and hospitals because the electrical and wireless environment will harm them so badly that they may not recover. There is a need to have 'EMF clean' areas of hospitals where there is no electro magnetic radiation and chemical pollution, so that environmental victims can be treated safely.

There is one particular victim, a woman living in Toronto, Linda Sepp who suffers severely from EHS and MCS and chemically induced Fibromyalgia. She lives in a condemned house that is slated for demolition in the near future.

She needs a home that has no traces of chemicals and things like chemical cleaning products, air fresheners, pesticides and building materials that are found in most homes today. She is unable to tolerate these contaminants and suffers severe reactions which are life threatening.

The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation has done research on contaminant free homes. They are well aware of how safe housing improves health and provides victims the ability for victims to contribute to society again, for people who are otherwise completely disabled and debilitated.

Linda cannot drink tap water because chlorinamines and PPPC's are poison to her. She cannot wash or shower in tap water because the chlorine burns her skin and causes terrible reactions. She cannot even wash her clothes in tap water because the chlorine residue contaminates her clothes and she cannot wear them. She badly needs a whole house water filtration system to remove these chemicals, but cannot afford it.

She has virtually no clothes. She cannot wear clothes that have any traces of chemicals and this means that she can only use untreated natural cotton which is very expensive and she cannot afford. She needs to have a washing machine which has never been contaminated with commercial scented, chemical washing detergents or clothing which contained contaminants.

Her home must be safe from electrical fields and electro magnetic radiation.

Linda cannot live close to people who use chemicals and or other sources of airborne pollution. She must be housed away from any exposure that may come from homes nearby, such as clothes dryer vents.

Linda's health is very poor and quickly getting worse. Her condemned home has a serious mold problem that is causing a deterioration of her health, and is aggravating her environmental sensitivities. She only has a very short time before she faces eviction. This is an emergency situation that needs leadership and decisive action to help a Canadian citizen in great need. I ask that you provide all possible assistance to Linda, as soon as possible, so that her torture can be lessened and her life saved.

Re: Linda Sepp

Ms. Sepp was assessed by Dr. Hans Christian Raabe and myself in the Environmental Health Clinic in November, 2005. Ms. Sepp suffers from multiple severe allergies and environmental sensitivities, as well as fibromyalgia, conditions which are permanent, although their severity may vary according to the patient's exposure to triggering agents. Ms. Sepp has corresponded with me by e-mail, since she can no longer travel to the clinic, and, in any case, has had the maximum visits we can provide.

If Ms. Sepp is exposed to allergens or triggers such as in scented products, laundry and cleaning products, carpeting, particle-board, pesticides, moulds, wireless technologies, etc. she suffers from inability to concentrate, poor memory, profound fatigue and muscle weakness that makes it difficult for her to walk, migraine headaches, and generalized muscle pain.

In order to avoid repeated episodes of such severe symptoms, Ms. Sepp must avoid exposure to her allergens and chemical and electromagnetic triggers.

My understanding is that she is in urgent need of safe housing, a situation she has been unable to rectify since I saw her in 2005, and that her health has deteriorated considerably since then. In my opinion, from my further communication with her, if Ms. Sepp is unable to live in safe housing to meet her special needs, it is probable she will require ongoing help and assistance with activities of daily living. As it is, she requires assistance when shopping for groceries due to her deteriorating health and the increased use of strong fragrance and air freshener chemicals being used and sold in grocery stores, some of which cannot be effectively removed from areas they have been used.

Ms. Sepp is unable to use a public or shared laundromat due to the chemicals used in regular laundry products, which severely impair her ability to function. She requires her own washing machine at home to avoid these triggering substances.

She also requires whole house water filtration (like that available in the Environmental Health Clinic, Dallas) to filter all the water including for cooking and drinking, as well as for washing clothes and bedding.

In order to make the indoor air safer for her to breathe, she needs to have at least 2 or 3 high quality air filtration units with activated carbon and HEPA filters (without harmful glues) to remove the volatile organic compounds which contribute to her illness.

Since avoidance of allergens and triggers is the most important factor in treatment, it is also necessary for this patient to sleep in an environment free of allergens and triggers.

This necessitates a bedroom dedicated to sleeping only and a second bedroom for other things like clothing, and her desk and computer, as well as private storage, preferably vented, private ensuite laundry, and private handicapped accessible parking.

Most existing social housing units have shared or common air space and hallways, which would expose Ms. Sepp to ongoing allergens and triggers, as well as to wireless technologies, which I understand now also trigger her symptoms.

She cannot share air with other people, either by HVAC or through cracks in units or shared hallways and requires a detached two bedroom home in a chemically safe area.

In my view, it is urgent that some mechanism be found to assist Ms. Sepp to locate a suitable home to prevent even more suffering and deterioration in her already extremely compromised health.

With Ottawa and several provinces poised to ban sale of incandescent light bulbs by 2012, many Canadians are turning to compact fluorescent lamps as an alternative.

CFLs are a variation on traditional fluorescent tubes designed to fit conventional light sockets. They use about 66-75% less electricity than an equally bright incandescent bulb, one maker says.

When these low-pressure mercury vapour lamps are switched on, the mercury vaporizes, is charged or "excited" by the electricity, generating ultraviolet rays that excite a phosphor coating lining the bulb and produce light.

As we detailed in our last article, Health Canada contends that unbroken compact fluorescents pose no health threat to most people, and even broken units pose a very small risk to your health unless improperly or carelessly handled.

Health Canada's position is summarized in its It's Your Health article, The Safety of Compact Fluorescents, at

But several health professionals have argued in published research that there's evidence linking CFLs, which generate ultraviolet and electromagnetic radiation and "dirty electricity," to health issues as skin rashes and headaches.

Some of these arguments are touched on in the environmental petition, Environmental and Health Concerns Associated with Compact Fluorescent Lamps, submitted to the Auditor General of Canada in June 2008 by Magda Havas and Thomas Hutchinson of Trent University's environmental and resource studies department. see it at

Concerns also have been raised about compact fluorescents' impact on the environment.

Since each CFL contains about five milligrams of mercury and other harmful gases, the fear is various types of pollution will occur when lamps hit landfill sites.

When the mercury in CFLs mixes with water, it changes into its more toxic organic form. If not cleaned up, there are concerns this will contaminate the land, water table and eventually the air.

"CFLs need to be deposited at a toxic waste facility," Havas and Hutchinson write. "Few Canadians are aware of this."

In addition to local household hazardous waste programs, several retailers, including Home Depot, Rona and Ikea, offer CFL recycling programs.

With the 2012 ban on most incandescent bulbs looming and concerns over use of CFLs, many people are now seeking alternatives for indoor home lighting.

Light-emitting diodes are emerging as a possible alternative. Energy-efficient LEDs, which generate light by running electric current across semiconductor material, have been around for years in everything from home appliances and electronics to giant TV screens and traffic lights, and have been making rapid inroads as Christmas lights.

Unlike incandescents, they don't waste energy by generating heat and have no filament to burn out, so they last — up to 60 times longer than incandescents and 10 times longer than CFLs, experts say.

And unlike compact fluorescents, they contain no mercury or other toxic substances. According to current information, they pose no health or environmental hazards.

But the cost of manufacturing LED bulbs as bright as incandescents still puts widespread use beyond the reach of many average consumers. Currently, the LED equivalent of a 60-watt incandescent bulb ranges from $30 to $50, or more.

Some makers have refined their manufacturing process to boost bulb brightness. And as demand increases, costs are likely to drop.

Meanwhile, Heath Canada is expected to complete a study of ultraviolet and electromagnetic emissions from CFLs this year. It has agreed to report its findings and work with makers and dist-ributors to take corrective action, if necessary, under the Radiation Emitting Devices Act.

It remains to be seen whether this will answer health and environmental experts' concerns.

One thing, however, is clear: consumers need to be aware of the impact of energy-saving lighting technologies so they can choose the solution that works best for them.

Well, but this seems to be completely in line with our own hypothesis.

During certain instances, microwaves (and other EMFs) can (initially) be stimulative, i.e. seemingly protective. But always remember that such effects, of course, are to be regarded as abnormal.

See e.g. the enclosed paper of mine; it points to that the immune system initially may be stimulated, but further down the road seemingly exhausted, perhaps even ending in a collapse. (We have noted similar findings for the heart; see the other paper  by Hallberg Ö, Johansson O, "Mobile handset output power and  health", Electromag Biol Med 2004; 23: 229-239.)

Alzheimer's research

Dear Margaret:

Happy New Year!

As for this Alzheimer's Disease study, I am hoping to pay a visit to these researchers in Florida next week. 

There are some important points to consider:

• Transgenic, genetically engineered mice are very unique animals and extrapolation to even other normal mice, let alone humans is very, very tenuous when addressing even basic biological functions.  Cognitive functions are yet one more step removed in terms of extrapolation -- mice and people do not think alike.  We need to know more of the investigator's reasoning in terms of how findings in these types of mice relate to human Alzheimer's Disease in general.  
• The exposure system they used, with the central antenna, produces a head-first, whole body exposure.  We know from our work that this is not an efficient system for exposing brain tissue and with this system it is very unlikely that the exposures to the brain were focused. Thus, there is very likely to be systemic oxidative stress reaction in the mice to the whole-body aspect of the exposure.  This would include endocrine response and functional deficits related to sleep, for example, which indeed could confound the brain findings in these mice.  We need to know more of the dosimetry reasoning as well as how they rationalize other confounders.
• So, on the scientific design and interpretation side, there are these and many other questions that need to be addressed before we know the degree of relevance of these findings to Alzheimer's Disease in people.  
• As for relevance to Alzheimer's patients, we have known for many years that Information Carrying Radio Waves (ICRW) open the blood-brain barrier.  In Alzheimer's patients with amyloid plaques, opening of the BBB could restore circulation to parts of the brain that had been 'dead' or non-functioning because of amyloid build-up.  For Alzheimer's patients, that might produce a positive response for a while as now these brain cells could have restored intercellular communication facilitated by restored circulation.  But remember that the BBB is a protective layer of endothelial cells in the brain vasculature, so while there might be some restored activity, that would need to be balanced against increased brain tissue exposure to heavy metals and other circulating toxins that would have brain tissue access after the BBB is breached. It is therefore possible that controlled ICRW exposure could have a limited therapeutic effect, but there would be serious potential side-effects to consider.  
• Following from these pathological realities, however, it does not follow at all that use of a cell phone would be protective against Alzheimer's Disease based on these data, even taken at face value.  Opening of the BBB is a dangerous proposition for normal healthy people and we know this is a definitive effect of ICRW. Further, increased brain activity, such as that reported by the investigators, is not always a good thing for a healthy person.  This increased stimulation could lead to energetic imbalances, seizure disorders and other neurological problems.  
• And, of course, we have the building database on other health impacts of ICRW exposure that are now predominant in the published literature. A short-term restoration of brain activity in Alzheimer's patients might not be a reasonable trade-off when it carries with it a significantly increased risk of brain cancer, other brain tumors, salivary gland malignancy, eye cancer, other neurological disorders, cognitive deficits and general quality of life impairment.

I will update you after my visit to their lab.

(Santa Fe New Mexican, The (NM) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jan. 8--A Santa Fe man who says he suffers from electromagnetic sensitivity is suing his next-door neighbor for refusing to turn off her cell phone and other electronic devices.

Arthur Firstenberg, who has actively opposed the proliferation of wireless systems in public buildings, claims he has been made homeless by Raphaela Monribot's rejection of his requests.

Firstenberg and Monribot, who have homes only 25 feet apart in a west-side neighborhood, both declined to discuss the lawsuit Thursday.

Monribot's actions have effectively ousted Firstenberg from the house he bought last year and forced him to stay with friends or in his car, says a document filed Monday in state District Court by lawyer Lindsay Lovejoy Jr.

Firstenberg "cannot stay in a hotel, because hotels and motels all employ wi-fi connections, which trigger a severe illness," says the request for a preliminary injunction. "If (Firstenberg) cannot obtain preliminary relief, he will be forced to continue to sleep in his car, enduring winter cold and discomfort, until this case can be heard." The case has been assigned to state District Judge Daniel Sanchez, who has yet to set a hearing.

According to an affidavit signed by Firstenberg, Monribot has known about his electromagnetic sensitivity, or EMS, since May 2008, when he hired her to cook meals for him in her home. He said that after he explained his predicament, she began turning off her cell phone and computer "to spare me the pain of EMS." Firstenberg said he began to sublease a house Monribot rented at 247 Barela St. when Monribot went to France, where her husband, Jean-Pierre Monribot, is a citizen and where one of their daughters lives. But, after the landlord threatened eviction because the rent was unpaid, Firstenberg said, he purchased the house on Sept. 26, 2008, for $430,000.

When a house at 246 Casados St. -- which backs up to the one on Barela Street -- came up for rent, Firstenberg said, he notified Monribot, who rented that house in October 2008.

"Within a day of (Monribot) moving in, I began to feel sick when I was in my house," Firstenberg wrote in his affidavit. "(Monribot's) house is located 25 feet from my house. Further, because the two houses at one time were on a single lot, their electrical systems are fed from a single main cable. In fact, the electric meter for my house is mounted on (Monribot's) house. Electromagnetic fields emitted in (Monribot's) house are transmitted by wire directly into my house." Firstenberg said that when he visited Monribot in her new house, she told him she had purchased a new iPhone and leaves it turned on at all times so family members can reach her. When he asked her if she could use a land line in the house, she "flatly refused without explanation," he said.

"I also observed a computer in use, compact fluorescent lights, dimmer rheostats, and other sources of electromagnetic radiation," he said.

Monribot "agreed to phase out the fluorescent lights, but she declined to consider any limitation on her cell phone, or to turn off her computer when not in use, or to replace dimmer switches. In fact, a few days later, (Monribot) installed a wireless network for her computer. All of these devices emitted electromagnetic radiation and triggered my EMS with life-threatening reactions, which included a heart arrhythmia." Firstenberg said he looked into separating the utility connections between the two houses, but Public Service Company of New Mexico has not yet suggested any solution. He said Monribot inquired about the PNM discussions last fall, saying, "I am feeling a bit guilty." Firstenberg's motion is accompanied by dozens of notes from doctors, some dating back more than a decade, about his sensitivities.

Firstenberg, 59, said he began to experience stomach pains, memory loss and other symptoms as a medical student at the University of California, Irvine, in 1980. Since then, various physicians have diagnosed him as being extraordinarily sensitive to both chemicals and electromagnetic radiation, he said.

Since moving to Santa Fe five years ago, Firstenberg has been active in groups that have unsuccessfully tried to stop the city from installing wireless systems at City Hall and public libraries. He has also opposed the installation of cell towers in Chimayo and Madrid, a remote monitoring system for the city water system and controlled burns in national forests.

The issue of wireless systems could come to a head Feb. 10, when the City Council considers a new telecommunications ordinance, two franchises for new communication systems and a resolution asking the federal government to allow municipalities to consider health and environment consequences of cell phone towers.

Firstenberg declined to be photographed Thursday outside his home on one-lane Barela Street. The back seat of his car, a Nissan with California license plates, contained the bedding he uses to stay warm at night.

Environmental Toxicity

Examples of well-known damaging effects of energy to the body include:

1. High frequency electromagnetic radiation (EMR) leads to cancer from radioactivity, and leukemia from x-ray exposure
2. Light: Too much sunlight exposure (sunburn) = infrared light. Nightlights cause eye problems and decreased melatonin levels in children
3. Sound: Tinnitus can come from too much noise exposure. Cancer from infrasound exposure (i.e.vibrating refrigerator, near-by freeway tunnel)

Possible sources of damaging energy to the unborn or young child include household currents and fields (cordless phones, wireless, appliances), incoming information carrying radio waves (cell phone and radio/TV broadcasting), light and noise (night light, street lights, traffic, heat pumps).

According to Dr. Klinghardt, two parameters that determine and predict the future health of a child are as follows:

1. Body Voltage in the sleeping location of the pregnant mom or the infant after birth. The body acts like an antenna for ambient electric fields in the home and builds up electric tension against the ground, which interferes with numerous biological and physiological functions. Body voltage increases towards the center of the body. The measurement requires an inexpensive instrument (Multi Meter). Since our neurons operate at voltages between 80 and 120 milliVolt (mV), the threshold at which artificially induced body voltage interferes with our normal physiology is at a level at or above 80 milliVolts. The higher the body voltage, the worse. Reported damage caused by EMF includes damage to the developing neuronal networks, to cell signaling mechanisms, the epigenome, to the cell membrane ("cell membrane sensitivity") interruption or stimulation of cell signaling molecules and damage to the DNA itself.

1. Microwave exposure of the pregnant mom or the infant after birth. This measurement addresses the effects of cell phone radiation (from nearby emitter), wireless technology in the home (or from neighbor) and cordless phones. Anything over 1 microWatt/square meter in the sleeping location is expected to cause biological, immunological, physiological and neurological consequences. The higher, the more devastating.

Known biomedical effects include:

• Decrease in pineal function with decreased melatonin production (insomnia, lowered immune status
• opens blood brain barrier
• Autism and other neuro-developmental disorders in exposed infants
• increased leukemia and cancer rates
• brain fog, fatigue, short term memory loss
• synergistic effect with all other types of radiation
• disturbs all known intrinsic rhythms (EEG, heart rate variability, breathing pattern, 24 hr meridian activity, bowel movements, detoxification, etc),
• blocks blood-brain and gut barrier (leaky gut syndrome) in stuck-open position leading to neurological illness (Parkinson, MS and ALS, autism,etc.), food and environmental allergies
• synergistic effect with other fields, increases mold growth and mycotoxin production in homes
• lowered immune status (decreased IL-10, increased IL-1, IL-6, decreased NK cell activity)

Environmental toxicity in the home may be framed multi-dimensionally over five levels.

The first level, the physical level, is the world of toxicity, he explained. For example, the ground may be off-gassing toxins which may enter the house and cause cancer in vulnerable individuals. The apartment may be downwind from a golf course accumulating pesticides used to perfect the lawn, leading to breast or prostate cancer. What kinds of toxins exist, and how do we choose the materials that are least toxic? For example, flame retardants are everywhere, including clothing and furniture. Fat soluble toxins, PBDE's, attach to our lipid membranes and our body becomes toxic. Breast milk is very toxic and childhood nervous disorders are rising.

The trend in the US is to make the building process cheaper and cheaper for the biggest profit. This has not been the case in other countries, but this trend is now even being followed in Europe.

The second level is the electromagnetic level. The home may be located too close to a present or future cell phone tower and cause hyperactivity in a young child. The wireless network of your neighbor may be causing your insomnia.

The second level includes the electric power lines that come into our houses. Fields from cell phones, television, and radio are not compatible with human lives. Our stress level has dramatically increased compared to fifty years ago and electric power lines are a contributor. The U.S. is the only country that has no rules for electrical wiring, said Dr. Klinghardt. Learning disorders, autism, eczema, hyperactivity and asthma may all be helped by changing the position of the bed away from power lines. Because outlets give off electricity even when they are not being used, it may be helpful to turn off the bedroom fuses at night.

The third level is the mental level. The home may be affected by the mental issues and consciousness level of the previous owners, creating insomnia for the next owners, bouts of depression or other unexplained states of un-wellbeing, or it may be too close to the busy thinking-world of the inner city. The mental field may also be determined by people who lived in the house before, whose mental states hang in each room. This mental field may perpetuate depressed or happy states. A contributing factor to insomnia is household clutter. It is important to keep a zen-like environment in the bedroom, and use organic cotton bed sheets. Non-organic cotton has become full of insecticides and is very toxic.

The fourth level is the dream world. The unseen needs to be seen, acknowledged and honored. The home may be on an Indian burial ground, for example, or a place of past trauma and haunted. The new owners may experience a series of accidents, illnesses, depression, violence and more – until they leave.

The fifth level is the level of spirit. When a home is blessed or the piece of earth that is underneath is blessed, then everyone in the house will benefit from it in one way or another.

Tissues most affected by electromagnetic energy are reproductive tissue and breast tissue, leading to miscarriage and infertility, endocrine tissues and neurological tissue. There are higher rates of development of leukemia and bone marrow cancers when people live in close proximity to electrical stations. People develop headaches when they sleep around electromagnetic fields. Chronic insomnia improves by modifying fields. Non-diabetic peripheral neuropathy may come from nerves sensitized by long-term exposure to electric fields. Migraines may come from brain sensitization. Recognition, acknowledgement and resolution of the problem will often make a major contribution to the client's recovery from chronic illness, business and relationship failure, repeated inadvertent events and other issues.
