Key resolutions/appeals

June 11, 2011. Below are some of the key resolutions/appeals released by expert scientific groups around the world since 1998 regarding the biological and health effects of both low frequency electromagnetic fields (EMF) associated with electricity and radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic radiation (EMR) generated by wireless devices.

Anyone who reads these cannot be left with the illusion (or delusion) that this form of energy is without adverse biological and health consequences at levels well below existing guidelines.

Children are particularly vulnerable. It is irresponsible of governments to maintain the status quo in light of thousands of studies that have been published and statements by these experts.

Here are the resolutions/appeals/reports in reverse chronological order. These are presented in more detail and links are provided for each one at:

www.magdahavas.com

"International Experts' Perspective on the Health Effects of Electromagnetic Fields and Electromagnetic Radiation".

1. May 31, 2011: International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and World Health Organization (WHO) reclassified radio frequency electromagnetic fields as a Class 2B carcinogen (possibly carcinogen to humans).

2. May 2011: The Parliamentary Assembly Council of Europe (PACE) released Resolution 1815 on the Potential Dangers of Electromagnetic Fields and their effect on the Environment.

3. April 2011: The Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (RNCNIRP) released their Resolution entitled "Electromagnetic fields from Mobile Phones: Health Effect on Children and Teenagers".

4. 2010: Seletun Statement, Norway: The International Electromagnetic Field Alliance (IEMFA) released their report entitled Scientific Panel on Electromagnetic Field Health Risks: Consensus Points, Recommendations, and Rationales following a scientific meeting at Seletun Norway November 2009.

5. 2009: EU Parliament Electromagnetic Report and Resolution entitled:European Parliament Resolution on health concerns associated with electromagnetic fields, was adopted February 17, 2009 with 29 recommendations.

6. 2009: Porto Alegre Resolution, Brazil. Scientists and doctors recognize electrohypersensitivity and are concerned that exposure to electromagnetic fields may increase the risk of cancer and chronic diseases; that exposure levels established by international agencies (IEEE, ICNIRP, ICES) are obsolete; and that wireless technology places at risk the health of children, teens, pregnant women and others who are vulnerable.

7. 2008: Venice Resolution, Italy. International Commission for Electromagnetic Safety (ICEMS) Scientists recognize biological effects at non-thermal levels, that standards are inadequate, that electro-sensitivity exists and that there is a need to research mechanisms.

8. 2007: BioInitiative Report, USA. In response to statements that there are no scientific studies showing adverse biological effects of low level electromagnetic fields and radio frequency radiation, a group of researchers produced the BioInitiative Report that documents 2000 studies showing biological effects of extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic fields and radio frequency (RF) radiation and calling for biologically based exposure guidelines.

9. 2006: Benevento Resolution, Italy. The International Commission for Electromagnetic Safety (ICEMS) organized a conference entitled: The Precautionary EMF Approach: Rationale, Legislation and Implementation.Scientists at this conference signed the Benevento Resolution that consists of 7 major statements.

10. 2005: Helsinki Appeal, Finland. Physicians and researchers presented the Helsinki Appeal to the European Parliament.

11. 2005: Irish Doctors' Environmental Association (IDEA), Ireland.Members of IDEA wrote a position paper on electromagnetic radiation. Doctors recognize electrohypersensitivity (EHS) is increasing and request advice from government on how to treat EHS.

12. 2002. Catania Resolution, Italy. This resolution was signed by scientists at the international conference "State of the Research on Electromagnetic Fields-Scientific and Legal Issues".

13. 2002 : Freiburg Appeal, Germany. Physicians request tougher guidelines for radio frequency exposure. This document was endorsed by thousands of healthcare practitioners.

14. 2002: Salzburg Resolution, Austria. The Salzburg Resolution on Mobile Telecommunication Base Stations makes four recommendations including preliminary guidelines 0f 0.1 microW/cm2 for sum of all emissions from mobile phone stations.

15. 2000: Stewart Report, UK. The Independent Expert Group on Mobile Phones (IEGMP) produced a report, Mobile Phones and Health, that is commonly referred to as the Stewart Report, named after its Chairman Sir William Stewart.

16. 1998: Vienna EMF Resolution, Austria. Workshop on Possible Biological and Health Effects of RF Electromagnetic Fields.

Based on these resolutions and appeals from international groups of physicians and scientists immediate action is required to protect public health from continued increasing exposure to radio frequency radiation and electromagnetic fields.

I call on . . .

  1. regulators around the world to reexamine existing guidelines for both EMF and EMR and to reduce them to the lowest possible levels to protect the public and workers. Values above 4 milliGauss (low frequency magnetic fields); above 0.1 microW/cm2 (power density for radio frequency radiation) and above 40 GS units (dirty electricity) have been associated with adverse health effects in peer reviewed scientific publications!
  2. government agencies responsibility for the location of both base stations and power lines to keep distances at least 400 meters (base stations) and 100 meters (transmission lines) from residential properties as well as school and health care facilities.
  3. utilities (water, gas, electricity) to reconsider the use of wireless smart meters and provide wired options for those who are sensitive, for those who do not want to be exposed, and for those in densely populated settings.
  4. manufacturers who are providing technology that uses electricity and/or emits radio frequency radiation to re-engineer their products to provide the minimum radiation possible. This includes light bulbs, computers, wireless home devices like baby monitors and cordless phones, cell phones, smart meters, plasma TVs, among others.
  5. architects, builders, electricians, and plumbers to design and construct buildings that are based on principles of good electromagnetic hygiene. This includes using materials that absorb or shield building interiors from microwave radiation especially near external sources of this radiation and in multi-unit buildings; to provide wired alternatives to wireless devices; to properly wire and ground buildings to minimize low frequency electromagnetic fields and to eliminate ground current problems; and to install filters on electrical panels and/or throughout the building to ensure good power quality.
  6. local, state, federal health authorities to educate medical professions about the potential biological effects of both low frequency and radio frequency electromagnetic energy; about the growing number of people who have electrosensitivity (ES) or electrohypersensitivity (EHS) and to alert them on how they can help their patients in terms of minimizing their exposure and promoting their recovery.
  7. hospitals and health care centres to review their policy on wireless technology and to provided electromagnetically-clean areas within these centres for those who are sensitive to this radiation.
  8. school boards to reopen their policy on the preference of WiFi (wireless technology) over wired internet access and not allow towers/antennas within 400 meters of their school property.
  9. parents to practice good electromagnetic hygiene especially in the bedroom and especially for their children. This involves using wired rather than wireless devices in the home, keeping electric appliances away from the bed, turning off/unplugging devices when not in use.
  10. the media to provide information to the public about the health and safety of using this technology; to rely on "independent experts" who do not receive funding or other benefits based on the outcome of research studies; and to identify experts funded by the industry as "industry representatives". The integrity of many of these scientists leaves much to be desired.

Letter: Be wise about cell phones

http://www.theforecaster.net/content/p-lettercobb-010511

State Rep. Andrea Boland introduced the Children's Wireless Protection Act last winter, which would have placed warning labels on cell phones. Experts from around the world testified in favor of Boland's bill, including Dr. Devra Davis, the author of "Disconnect: The Truth About Cell Phone Radiation, What the Industry Has Done To Hide It, and How to Protect Your Family." Scientists, doctors, and nurses were all supporters for the bill.
On June 15, San Francisco passed a right-to-know ordinance, making it the first city in the nation to require cell phone radiation disclosure at the point of sale. On June 30, Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich announced his intent to introduce a bill requiring warning labels on cell phones.
After being diagnosed with a brain tumor, I learned that cell phone manuals come with warnings that are being buried in fine print, which nobody reads. I sure didn't. I was shocked to learn that the manual of the BlackBerry Torch warns "Keep the BlackBerry device at least 0.98 inches from your body, including the abdomen of pregnant women and the lower abdomen of teenagers."
I am happy to announce that Portland's mayor, Nicholas Mavodones Jr., has declared October as Cell Phone Awareness Month. To learn more information about safer cell phone use go to Campaign For Safer Cell Phones on the Web. Please protect the brain of you and your family.

Bees in freefall as study shows sharp US decline

Rare bumblebees comeback
Bumblebees are important pollinators of wild plants and agricultural crops around the world. Photograph: RSPB/PA

The abundance of four common species of bumblebees in the US has dropped by 96% in just the past few decades, according to the most comprehensive national census of the insects. Scientists said the alarming decline, which could have devastating implications for the pollination of both wild and farmed plants, was likely to be a result of disease and inbreeding.
Bumble bees are important pollinators of wild plants and agricultural crops around the world including tomatoes and berries thanks to their large body size, long tongues, and high-frequency buzzing, which helps release pollen from flowers.
Bees in general pollinate some 90% of the world's commercial plants, including most fruits, vegetables and nuts. Coffee, soya beans and cotton are all dependent on pollination by bees to increase yields. It is the start of a food chain that also sustains wild birds and animals.
But the insects, along with other crucial pollinators such as moths and hoverflies, have been in serious decline around the world since the last few decades of the 20th century. It is unclear why, but scientists think it is from a combination of new diseases, changing habitats around cities, and increasing use of pesticides.
Sydney Cameron, an entomologist at the University of Illinois, led a team on a three-year study of the changing distribution, genetic diversity and pathogens in eight species of bumblebees in the US.
By comparing his results with those in museum records of bee populations, he showed that the relative abundance of four of the sampled species (Bombus occidentalis, B pensylvanicus, B affinis and B terricola) had declined by up to 96% and that their geographic ranges had contracted by 23% to 87%, some within just the past two decades.
Cameron's findings reflect similar studies across the world. According to the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology in the UK, three of the 25 British species of bumblebees are already extinct and half of the remainder have shown serious declines, often up to 70%, since around the 1970s. Last year, scientists inaugurated a £10m programme, called the Insect Pollinators Initiative, to look at the reasons behind the devastation in the insect population.
Cameron's team also showed that declining species of bees had higher infection levels of a pathogen called Nosema bombi and lower genetic diversity compared with the four species of bees that were not in decline – B bifarius, B vosnesenskii, B impatiens and B bimaculatus.
The N bombi pathogen is commonly found in bumblebees throughout Europe but until now has been largely unstudied in north America. The infection reduces the lifespans of individual bees and also results in smaller colony sizes.
The reduction in genetic diversity seen in the declining bees means that they are less able to fight off any new pathogens or resist pollution or predators. "Higher pathogen prevalence and reduced genetic diversity are, thus, realistic predictors of these alarming patterns of decline in north America, although cause and effect remain uncertain," Cameron wrote today in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Insects such as bees, moths and hoverflies pollinate around a third of the agricultural crops grown worldwide. If all of the UK's insect pollinators were wiped out, the drop in crop production would cost the UK economy up to £440m a year, equivalent to around 13% of the UK's income from farming.
The collapse in the global bee population is a major threat to crops.
It is estimated that a third of everything we eat depends upon pollination by bees, which means they contribute some £26bn to the global economy. Other identified causes of bee decline include parasites such as the bloodsucking varroa mite and viral and bacterial infections, pesticides and poor nutrition stemming from intensive farming methods.
"Pollinator decline has become a worldwide issue, raising increasing concerns over impacts on global food production, stability of pollination services, and disruption of plant-pollinator networks," wrote Cameron. "In accordance with the goals of the United Nations convention on biological diversity to reduce the rate of species loss by 2010, such efforts to elucidate the causes and ecological impacts of bumble bee decline, in co-ordination with informed conservation strategies, will go a long way to mitigating further losses."

Let WiFI train speed on past

Opinion   By LUCILLE STRATH
Re "Parents share their WiFi fears" (Dec. 8) -
At this meeting, concerned parents learned that the claims made for the safety of wireless Internet technology are unproven. We learned that children with electromagnet hypersensitivity are getting sick in WiFi equipped schools, that prolonged radio frequency exposure is potentially injurious to human growth in the early years of development and of a fetus in utero, and we learned that the electromagnet field (EMF) surrounding each student working at banks of wireless computers exceeds what is currently deemed to be safe and poses a serious health risk.
I am certain that the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board wants only the most progressive and safest environment for our students. They would not want to implement any technology that would in any way risk student health. At present there is not conclusive medical proof that putting children in an environment of industrial strength EMFs for six to eight hours a day is harmful. There is no proof that it is not. We won't know this for at least 10 or more years. We do have evidence that it is harmful. Sensitive children, who during the school year develop unexplained headaches, increased heart rate, fatigue, and dizziness suddenly improve when removed from a WiFi school.
There is no doubt the school board is under pressure to adopt wireless technology. The board doesn't want to be left standing at the station as the high tech train streaks by. The high tech lobby is one of the most powerful lobby groups in industry today. Kids are a huge market with the possibility of a laptop in every backpack, an ear-bud in every ear. Why do we have to buy into this powerful marketing scheme? First they will sell us routers (transmitters), then the supporting software and maintenance. We already have high-speed fibre optic cable in our schools. As it is, kids can get on the Internet as much as they want. The World Wide Web is essential for learning and communication; the important point is that schools should be islands of safety from the WiFi electromagnetic radiation that is virtually everywhere
Why is it that Switzerland, France and Germany are advising against WiFi or actively removing wireless technology from their schools? We have to find out why. We need a moratorium on the installation of WiFi until we have all the answers.
If in the next decade, the research shows it is harmful, then KPRDSB's decision to not install WiFi will confirm the strong leadership role our school board has taken in resisting this powerful, persuasive lobby group. We will have protected our young children. Being left standing at the station as the WiFi train streaks by may just be the wisest (and safest) place to be.
Lucille Strath is a high-speed wireless user, a mother, grandmother and former Trent University teacher who is deeply concerned about the health of young children.

Wildlife: Where Have All the Bumble Bees Gone?

Scientists call it the Beepocalyspe. (OK, not scientists, but I like to call it that.) In late 2006, whole hives of honey bees began dying overnight for reasons that are still unclear. Scientists called it colony-collapse disorder (CCD), and it's as scary as it is mysterious. Adult bees simply leave the hive, ostensibly in search of pollen, only to die somewhere in the open. Reported death rates in bee colonies in the U.S. were 29% in 2009 and rose to 34% in 2010. (Data from the Department of Agriculture's CCD Progress Report—download a PDF here.) It's still unclear what's behind CCD—recent studies have suggested that it might be due to a combination of viral and fungal infections—but there's no doubt about the impact that sustained bee loss would have on the agricultural sector. About 130 crops in the U.S.—worth some $15 billion a year—depend on pollination from the honeybee alone in the U.S., and it's scary to think what might happen to the world food supply if CCD can't be curbed.
Get ready for more bad news—it's not just the honeybees that are disappearing. North American bumble bees have been steadily dwindling, vanishing from their long-established habitat. Bumble bees aren't as well-known as honeybees, but they're important pollinators as well, especially for tomatoes and berries. While there have been anecdotal reports from beekeepers and other observers about population declines for bumblebees, however there hasn't been the same concerted effort to track bumble bees. But a new paper published in the January 3 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) contains the results of a multiyear study of bumble bee populations, and the numbers are sobering. According to the study, written by a team of scientists including entomologist Sydney Cameron of the University of Illinois, the relative abundance of four species of bumble bees over the past few decades has dropped by more than 90%—and those disappearing species are also suffering from low genetic diversity, which makes them that much more susceptible to disease or any other environmental pressures. (Download a PDF of the paper here.)
As with CCD, it's not clear why bumble bee populations seem to be declining. Cameron and her colleagues note the possible role of a parasite called Nosema bombi that commonly found in Europe but which hasn't been fully studied among North American bumble bees. It's not a smoking gun, but the PNAS paper found that declining populations of bumble bee species were associated with high levels of parasite infection, while stable species were less likely to show frequent infection. Still, the authors write that the parasite could simply be more common in species that are declining—correlative, rather than causative.
Indeed, while studies like this one can help us get a grip on the problem of declining species, it's still not clear what's causing it—which makes the vanishing that much more eerie. On a day when authorities are trying to figure out why thousands of birds fell from the sky and thousands of fish died in the rivers in Arkansas, the bee study is a reminder of all the ways we may be impacting the natural world for the worse—without even knowing it.

Assessment of Radiofrequency Microwave Radiation
Emissions from Smart Meters
Sage Reports
Notice of Availability

Sage Associates has published an on-line report titled Assessment of Radiofrequency Microwave Radiation
Emissions from Smart Meters, dated January 1, 2011.

The Report is available for download at:

About the Report (from the website)
This Report is prepared in support of open discussion on radiofrequency microwave radiation levels (RF radiation levels) that are produced by wireless electric meters (i.e., smart meters) in California. There has been virtually no information made available to the public, nor to decision-makers on RF radiation levels. Significant unanswered questions still exist about what levels of radiofrequency microwave radiation will be produced by these meters.
This question has very important consequences for public health and welfare, because the public may be subjected to exposures at levels that either violate federal safety limits, or face chronic exposure levels that have already been associated with adverse health impacts, or both.
This Report uses computer modeling to predict power density levels that may be present where smart meters are in operation. The methodology used in this assessment is consistent with FCC OET 65 equations for prediction of RF power density levels. Many scenarios are modeled, to bracket the range of reasonably predictable RF exposures in typical living conditions. Many variables must be considered (installation very close to occupied space, how many meters are installed on a single wall, how frequently they will transmit an RF pulse, how powerful the RF radiation pulses will be, how far inside a home they will penetrate and at what intensities, how much 'piggybacking' of RF signals will occur from neighboring wireless meters, reflections that may increase RF levels, and what amount of RF wireless exposure may already be present beforehand, etc.)
To date, California's electric utilities have told the California Public Utilities Commission only that they will comply with applicable federal safety limits.  However, there are substantial discrepancies in what the FCC compliance testing says is needed for wireless meters to comply with their safety limits, and the manner in which many meters are being installed and are operating.
People may use this assessment to further their knowledge about wireless meters, using the tables that predict RF radiation levels, the tables that highlight potential violations of safety limits, and the health study-related tables showing RF radiation levels reported to pose health impacts. Although the authors expect there will be differences of opinion about the content of this report, we believe it will provide a basis for more educated decision-making and full disclosure of impacts.
The Report is not intended to be a substitute for disclosure of RF radiation levels by the CPUC and the electric utilities it regulates. They are responsible to the public to provide reliable and comprehensive information on impacts from wireless meters.

Canada offside with world on cell tower issue
By Sarah Schmidt, Canwest News Service

April 2, 2009

Health Canada says the government's limits of human exposure to electromagnetic fields and radio frequency radiation, set in 1999, adequately protect Canadians, including children, so no European-style warning on cellphone towers is necessary. The European parliament voted overwhelmingly on Thursday to push for tougher regulations to keep mobile phone towers and other electromagnetic emitting devices away from schools and to limit cellphone use for children and teenagers because of the "continuing uncertainties about the possible health risks."

Key parts of the newly endorsed report, backed by 559 of 581 parliamentarians, puts Canada offside with a growing number of international bodies raising concerns about a possible link between wireless technologies and devices and certain types of cancers, including brain cancer.

Health Canada maintains the government's limits of human exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) and radio frequency radiation, set in 1999, adequately protect Canadians, including children, so no warning is necessary.

Noting the use of cellphones has become common place for children as young as 10 as "an object serving a practical purpose and as a fashion accessory," the newly adopted report by the European Parliament raises special concern over young people "whose brains are still developing."

The international body representing 492 million people from 27 countries also voted to "draw attention" to the recent "appeal for caution" from Canadian epidemiologist Elisabeth Cardis, co-ordinator of the Interphone study, the largest research project organized by the International Agency for Research on Cancer studying 6,400 cellphone users with cancer.

The European parliament's report notes that Cardis, "in light of existing knowledge, recommends, as far as children are concerned, that mobile phones should not be used beyond reasonable limits."

In the short term, the parliament is calling on the commission to review "the scientific basis and adequacy of the EMF limits" because "the dispute within the scientific community regarding the potential health risks arising from EMFs has intensified" since the limits were set in 1999. The report also notes that in the absence of "definite conclusions" from the scientific community, China, Russia and at least nine members states of the European Union have already lowered allowable exposure limits based on a "preventive" model.

In a statement issued Thursday in the wake of the vote, Health Canada said it is constantly reviewing the scientific literature to make sure Canada's Safety Code 6, which establishes exposure limits. The limits, last revised in 1999, remain "current and valid," the department said.

"Based on information to date and the weight of evidence from ongoing scientific literature reviewed by Health Canada scientists, the department is confident that the exposure limits specified in Safety Code 6 remain current and valid."

Health Canada didn't comment specifically on the "appeal for caution" put forward by Cardis, but the federal agency said its safety code's "built in margin of safety" means the limits for public exposure apply to everyone, including children.

"The limits set out in Safety Code 6 also protect frequent users of cellphones as they assume non-stop usage — 24 hours a day, seven days a week — which is not typical of Canadian cellphone use. As well, tests were performed at peak power levels. Cellphones typically operate at much lower levels."

However, Health Canada said "parents concerned about their children's RF exposure may wish to take extra precautions by limiting the use of cellular phones by their children."

That's not good enough for Sharon Noble. She and her husband received assurances from municipal and federal officials a few years ago that Safety Code 6 would protect them adequately before they purchased land and built on Triangle Mountain in Colwood, nearly Victoria.

Their home is located within 100 metres of two towers with a total of 140,000 watts and within one kilometre of 45 transmitters, said Noble. She attributes a high concentration of health problems among neighbours to the transmitters.

"It should say to Health Canada 'open up your eyes,'" Noble said of Health Canada's position in the face of international pressure.

"The United States and Canada are just about the worst in the world. With all the other countries reacting the way they are in trying to come up more with protective devices and guidelines, Health Canada will not talk about it. They say there's no credible evidence."

Britain, Germany, Belgium, Finland, Israel, Russia and India advise that children should limit their use of cellphones. France is moving to make it illegal to market cellphones to children under 12, while Russia recommends children under 18 not use cellphones at all.

Subject: Adopted Resolution Ries on ELF in the European Parliament

EUROPA PRESS
SPAIN
2, APRIL
The full European Parliament on Thursday adopted a non-binding report which claimed that the antenna, the high-voltage power grids or telecommunications towers are installed at a minimum distance of schools, nursing homes or health centers and to publish maps showing the levels of exposure to these waves after warning of the consequences to human health that exposure to electromagnetic fields can be determined.

The report, prepared by the Belgian liberal MEP Frédérique Ries and approved with the votes of 559 MEPs, 22 against and 8 abstentions, calls for "ensuring that at least schools, kindergartens, nursing homes and health centers are located at a specific distance, determined in accordance with scientific criteria, this type of equipment "and advocate" solutions dialogue between industry, government and military and neighborhood associations on the criteria for the installation of new antennas or telephone lines high voltage because they consider that it "is in the public
interest."

MEPs also argue that government support the establishment of infrastructure shared by companies and antennas in order to "reduce the number and exposure of the population." They also propose to reorient the antennas to electromagnetic fields that do not impinge so directly on the inhabited villages and seek to accelerate the implementation of the policy that specifically protects workers against electromagnetic fields.

The rapporteur Ries warned that European citizens are "concerned" by the radiation emitted by such facilities, while up to 80% of them recognized not have enough information. Therefore, the EU proposes to Veintisiete in his report that was published maps of this type of exhibition facilities via the web to ensure their access to the public.

The European Parliament also urged the Commission to use funds from the trans to drive research on the effects of electromagnetic fields and, again, asked to find out why it had not been released Interphone global scientific report, which helped finance Brussels, on the relationship between mobile phones and certain types of cancer

U.S. Ranked 36th Freest Press / Save the CBC / News From Quebec

Hi All

From the story below, it would appear that the land of the free is rapidly becoming the land of the repressed, misinformed and victims of corporate propaganda.  Is this the reason that North America is so far behind Europe in the knowledge about the adverse health effects of electro magnetic radiation?  Why are United States citizens not being provided with the known facts about the dangers of microwave radiation from cell phones, cordless phones, WiFi and other wireless devices?  Hopefully, the home of the brave, will find a brave way forward to bring democracy to the press and truth to its population.

The second story is about the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation having to drastically cut 800 staff positions, at a time that the government is trying to stem job losses throughout the country.  The CBC is known to report facts accurately and to conduct solid investigative reports, even when Government officials are involved.  The CBC is good for Canada and should not be weakened.

U.S. Ranked 36th Freest Press in the World

It is not economic prosperity but peace that guarantees press freedom. That is the main lesson to be drawn from the world press freedom index that Reporters Without Borders compiles every year and from the 2008 edition.

Said Reporters Without Borders:

"The post-9/11 world is now clearly drawn. Destabilized and on the defensive, the leading democracies are gradually eroding the space for freedoms. The economically most powerful dictatorships arrogantly proclaim their authoritarianism, exploiting the international community's divisions and the ravages of the wars carried out in the name of the fight against terrorism. Religious and political taboos are taking greater hold by the year in countries that used to be advancing down the road of freedom."

Aside from New Zealand and Canada, the first 20 positions on the Index are held by European countries, with Iceland, Luxembourg and Norway tied for first. While the economic disparities among the top 20 are immense, what they have in common is a parliamentary democratic system, and not being involved in any war. This is not the case with the United States, which ranks 36th domestically and 119th outside its own territory.

The worst violators of free expression were Turkmenistan (171st), North Korea (172nd) and Eritrea (173rd).

Reporters Without Borders

Dr. Mercola''s Comments
Dr. Mercola's Comments:

The United States was founded in large part on the first amendment, which includes the freedom of speech. So for the U.S. to be ranked only 36th for free press sure seems like a colossal step backwards. And believe it or not, this is a vast improvement from where the U.S. has ranked in the past. In 2006, the U.S. was only 53rd on the Index, and it rose 12 more places in the last year alone.

At the top of the list were Iceland, Luxembourg and Norway. These were the countries with no recorded censorship, threats, intimidation or physical reprisals.

Why is free press in the United States not on par with these European countries?

Reporters Without Borders compiles the Index by asking the 14 freedom of expression organizations that are its partners worldwide, its network of 130 correspondents, as well as journalists, researchers, jurists and human rights activists, to answer 50 questions about press freedom in their countries. In response, here is what they had to say about press in the United States:

• The release of Al-Jazeera cameraman Sami Al-Haj after six years in the Guantanamo Bay military base contributed to the United States' improved ranking.
• The absence of a federal "shield law" means the confidentiality of media sources is still threatened by federal courts, but the number of journalists being subpoenaed or forced to reveal their sources has declined in recent months and none has been sent to prison.
• The August 2007 murder of Oakland Post editor Chauncey Bailey in Oakland, California is still unpunished a year later. The way the investigation into his murder has become enmeshed in local conflicts of interest and the lack of federal judicial intervention also help to explain why the United States did not get a higher ranking.
• Account was also taken of the many arrests of journalists during the Democratic and Republican conventions.

It's worth pointing out that the Index measures press freedom violations, such as harassment, censorship, the legal framework of the media, the independence of the public media, Internet restrictions and financial pressure.

So to really get the whole picture on the media in the United States, it helps to have some other background information as well.

Who Controls the U.S. Media?

For the most part, the media spreads a lot of misinformation and corporate propaganda. This is not at all surprising considering that Time Warner, Disney, Murdoch's News Corporation, Bertelsmann of Germany, Viacom (formerly CBS) and General Electric's NBC are the top owners of the entire media industry, which includes everything you read and hear in newspapers, magazines, TV and radio stations, books, records, movies, videos, wire services and photo agencies.

In the last 15 years alone, your sources for news have shrunk drastically. Whereas in 1983, 50 corporations ruled the U.S. news media, by 2004 this number decreased to a minuscule six corporations!
As you might imagine, with just six corporations deciding what's worthy of news and what's not, you end up with sensationalized tragedies, celebrity features, and anything else that will capture people's attention.

There is virtually no competition in the media market today whatsoever, and this spells disaster for all types of news, including health information.

Unbiased, REAL Information IS Out There

Even though the United States enjoys access to much more free press than many other countries, the system is clearly not without flaws and you simply cannot rely on a news station, newspaper or any other media outlet to provide you with unbiased, reliable information.

However, the Internet and technology have seriously leveled the playing field when it comes to having access to reliable, unbiased information, and is one of the primary reasons why I remain highly confident that we are making more than a dent in the media process.

The Internet has really become one of the last bastions of independent, free-thinking news available -- and I am proud to be one of the top-ranked independent voices in the vastness of corporate monopoly, offering objective information to empower you with alternative choices that can radically improve your health, open your eyes to the truth, and keep you and your family safely out of the mainstream media madness.

As you weed through the information you read or hear on a daily basis, always remember this important piece of wisdom:

All truth goes through three phases.

   1. First, it is ridiculed.
   2. Second, it is violently opposed.
   3. Third, it is accepted as being self evident.

So if you want to get to the truth, you often have to keep an open mind, do more than a little bit of digging, and even then take everything you read and hear with a grain of salt.

Save the CBC - pressure is building!

Update - In the last 72 hours almost 50,000 Canadians have signed the petition to Save the CBC!  Let's up the pressure to 100,000 -- If you haven't signed or forwarded the email yet, here it is below:

Dear friends,

The government is forcing the CBC to drastically cut 800 staff and programming. We urgently need a massive public outcry to Save the CBC:

Sign the petition!

Canada's media networks have all been slammed by the recession. But the government is reportedly considering bailouts for its friends at private companies CTV and CanWest, while forcing the CBC and Radio Canada to drastically cut 800 staff and programming.

Our CBC is a national treasure, and a pillar of public-interest journalism in a country whose media is owned by a few large firms. We won't hear an outcry from their media outlets, and the CBC is too principled to use its megaphone to make the case for itself. We are the only voice the CBC has.

We urgently need a massive public outcry to Save the CBC, click below to sign the petition. The government is weak and falling in the polls and enough outrage can make the difference.

Parliamentarians have promised to deliver the petition directly in the House of Commons, and we'll even fly a plane and banner over Parliament Hill with the message! Sign now, and forward this email to everyone who might care about this:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/save_the_cbc

The number of signatures on the petition will be crucial to the effectiveness of the campaign, so let's get everyone who cares about the CBC and Radio Canada to sign.

The CBC is facing a budget shortfall that amounts to just $6 per Canadian, but its request to the government for a bridging loan to cover this was denied. The deep cuts the CBC is making will damage the organization across the board, and they will not be the last. If we don't stand up for the CBC now, it stands to die a death by a thousand cuts.

Harper's minority government is politically vulnerable and falling in the polls – public outrage could turn the government around on this, but it has to happen now. Let's move quickly.

With hope,
Ricken, Lisa-Marie, Laryn and the whole Avaaz Canada team.

This appeal is very credible.  Dr Belpomme is a cancer specialist.  The public and the scientist will believe him.  I have transfered to all my contacts including the deputy.

Test has been done in Montréal according to the precautionary principal.  1500 readings of EMR in 10 housings revealed that none are save.  The results are published in the consumer magasine Protégez-vous of February 2009.

University cancer scare debunked

Two-year study finds no problem at Susquehanna

Published January 22, 2009 11:48 pm -

The state Department of Health has given Susquehanna University and its environs a clean bill of health after completing its largest investigation ever, a two-year probe into reports of a high incidence of cancer among former students.By Rick Dandes The Daily Item

SELINSGROVE -- The state Department of Health has given Susquehanna University and its environs a clean bill of health after completing its largest investigation ever, a two-year probe into reports of a high incidence of cancer among former students.

The "Susquehanna University Study," released Thursday evening, researched the health of 9,610 alumni over a period spanning 1985 to 2004. It concluded that "although the number of cancers detected exceeded the expected number, there is no evidence that this results from an environmental exposure that occurred at the university or that it is associated with university attendance."

The report confirms earlier findings by the state Department of Environmental Protection that ruled out environmental threats to student health.

"Thanks to the exhaustive work by two state agencies, we now know that nothing in the Selinsgrove environment is harming our students, past or present," said Susquehanna University President L. Jay Lemons. "We can now speak with greater confidence and certainty than any other university in the nation about the safety of our environment."

Concerns about a possible cancer cluster at Susquehanna surfaced in 2007, when the parents of students who developed cancer from 1997 to 2005 suggested that environmental contamination might have caused the disease. Subsequent testing focused on an off-campus Orange Street apartment building known as the Warehouse, which was the residence for three athletes diagnosed with cancer.

DEP tested soil and groundwater in an area near the Warehouse and found "no evidence of environmental contamination."

The follow-up Department of Health study measured the reported number of cancer cases among alumni against the number of cases for the general population of Pennsylvania.
Two types of cancer, melanoma and testicular, were more prevalent in Susquehanna alumni, but according to the report, they have no known association with environmental factors.
Melanoma and testicular cancer are on the rise in Pennsylvania and the country, said Paul Chrostowski, a Maryland-based environmental health engineer and toxicologist who was quoted in a statement released by the university.

They are also more prevalent in white populations. For the period in question, 90 percent or more of Susquehanna's alumni were white, compared with 82 percent in Pennsylvania.
"Further, these cancers are more prevalent in young people," Chrostowski said. "And one might expect higher recorded incidents among an educated population because it is more likely to have access to health care screening and detection."

The report concludes by stating the importance of prevention and early diagnosis: "Several of the cancers identified in this study are highly preventable, with relatively simple and straightforward measures like sun block for malignant melanoma and human papilloma virus vaccine for cervical cancer. Others have highly effective screening tests that can find cancer at an early and treatable stage. Examples include pap smears for cervical cancer and mammography for breast cancer."

Approximately 2,000 students attend Susquehanna University.

Rick Dandes The Daily Item

Hi Rick

I have just read your story about the cancer investigation at Susquehanna University and it seems that both of the environmental investigations have been faulty, This is obvious because of this statement by the investigators: "Two types of cancer, melanoma and testicular, were more prevalent in Susquehanna alumni, but according to the report, they have no known association with environmental factors". This statement is incorrect and any qualified environmental investigator should know this!

Melanoma has been linked through scientific research to exposure of electro magnetic radiation, and in particular to FM radio broadcasting. I have attached a document titled Melanoma Incidence and (FM) Frequency Modulation Broadcasting.

Testicular cancer has been linked to electro magnetic radiation and in particular radar used by police officers. I have attached a document titled Occupational Exposure of Police Officers to Microwave Radiation From Traffic Radar Devices.

Both of these cancers are known to be caused by environmental factors involving electro magnetic radiation and that is where the investigation should have centered. You may want to ask: did the investigators consider electro magnetic radiation as a cause of these cancers and did they investigate the situation professionally?

A person knowledgeable about the adverse health effect of electro magnetic radiation, would look at the risk factors that students may be exposing themselves. I would immediately suspect laptop computers that were being used by students at that time. I would want to know if those devices were used on the victims laps or if they were used close to the body. There are two problems caused with close usage.

(1.) Laptop computers produce strong electrical and electro magnetic fields which could damage delicate areas of the body such as testicles.
(2.) Laptop computers produce strong amounts of electro magnetic radiation from the computer electronics and also from any wireless device that may be used by the computer. This radiation is likely to harm body areas closest to the computer but could also harm other areas of the body.

A qualified investigator should have checked whether WiFi systems were being used at the University or at the students residences and measured the power of the microwave radiation they emit. This is another strong source of radiation linked to both of these cancers. The investigation should also have examined whether the University or the residences have cell phone antennas or broadcasting antennas nearby that expose the students to a high amount of microwave radiation. I have attached a document titled, Five Studies which will demonstrate the extreme danger of being exposed to these antennas. You should note that all these adverse health effects occurred at exposure levels which are many times below current government safety levels.

Another consideration for any qualified environment investigator is to check at the University or the residences for any strong exposure of electrical and electro magnetic fields from wiring, electrical devices and electrical transformers. The investigator should also have checked and measured 'dirty electricity' or excessive harmonics on the electrical system at the university and residences. This is another cause of serious adverse health effects. For much further scientific information about the adverse health effects of electro magnetic radiation, please see the Bio Initiative Report http://www.blogger.com/ .

If the reported investigators have failed to conduct a thorough investigation of electro magnetic dangers, their results should be discarded and a further investigation should be ordered. A qualified expert in the field of electro magnetic fields and with specialized knowledge about harm that EMFs may cause to health, should be employed.

Yours sincerely

Microwave News

The new year brought two fresh initiatives to protect children from cell phone radiation. On January 7, the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) recommended that parents limit their children's use of mobile phones and, on the same day, the French government announced a series of environmental health proposals which includes a ban on cell phones designed specifically for children younger than six and of advertising that promotes the use of cell phones among those under 12.

In contrast to these actions --and those of Belgium, France, Russia, Sweden and the U.K.-- the lackadaisical approach of the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) is striking. Some 40 countries, many of which have only limited expertise in RF radiation health effects, look to the Commission for advice. Yet, ICNIRP has been silent for ten long years....
