Havas, Letter to the Editor / They changed their tune / etc

Wireless Electrical and Electromagnetic Pollution News

8 June 2011

From: Magda Havas

Letter to the Editor,

Peterborough Examiner, published June 6, 2011

We don't tolerate bullying in the schoolyard so why do we tolerate it in the school board? Teachers who are questioning the role out of WiFi in schools across Ontario, those who are electrically sensitive and worry about what effect this will have on their health, and those who are concerned about the effect it may have on their students are being silenced.

Principals have told several teachers that they are not to mention or to participate in any action that questions the Board's decision about WiFi. Messages posted on bulletin boards in the school have been removed. Teachers have been reprimanded and threatened.

Parents are being silenced. Schools refuse to inform parents about when WiFi will be activated in their children's school. Parents are forbidden to take their own measurements in schools that currently have WiFi or are scheduled for WiFi. They are unable to send flyers home to other parents to ask if parents agree with the Board's decisions about WiFi in the classroom.

Even without the May 31st 2011 announcement by the World Health Organization that radio frequency radiation (the type of radiation generated by WiFi) may cause cancer, this type of behavior of school boards is totally unacceptable.

When did schools get the right to expose children to potential carcinogens without the consent of their parent? When did schools get the right to threaten teachers who question their policies? When did we develop such an intolerant system that is more common is fascist regimes than in democratic societies?

Unfortunately those who are making decisions are ignorant of the technology and ignorant of the science that documents the adverse effects of radio frequency radiation generated by wireless routers. Back in the late 1980s we were concerned about the lack of science literacy among our students. Unfortunately, we are witnessing the consequences when those in positions of authority do not understand the science upon which their decisions are based, decisions that affect the lives of so many.

This ignorance coupled with intolerance and bullying is unacceptable and urgently needs to be addressed.

***

The same day the above letter appeared in the Peterborough Examiner (Jun 6, 2011), I received an email from Diane Lloyd, Chairperson, Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, denying me the right to speak at a public meeting scheduled for June 27th in Peterborough at Queen Mary Public School. The board is allowing those who have the same view as the school board to speak but not those who have dissenting views and who believe that the microwave radiation generated by WiFi is harmful to students and their teachers. They are allowing other professors from Trent University to speak as well as the Medical Officer of Health, who has often voiced her lack of concern about this radiation in the classroom. Ms Lloyd writes, "This meeting is being held to outline what our technology plan is and to respond to those questions . . . it is not a debate."

What is so unfortunately is that many of the schools already have wired internet access and Peterborough has fiber optics in the community, yet the school board is "dead set" on installing WiFi irrespective of how the radiation may affect students and staff! Introducing WiFi into schools that already have wired connections is a waste of money that could be better spent. But much more important than this is the unnecessarily exposure of students and staff to microwave radiation. Only time will tell how this radiation will affect their health, behavior, ability to learn, and ability to reproduce.

They changed their tune

Have you noticed that prior to the IARC / WHO cancer announcement, many people were quick to point out that the World Health Organisation had stated that microwave radiation was safe and did not cause cancer. Now that the WHO has changed their minds and announced cell phone radiation is a possible carcinogen, those same people are pointing to the WHO as being alarmists and they are trying to downplay the decision.

Good news about delay of CFL bulbs.

As most of you know, not only do these bulbs contain dangerous mercury, they also emit radiation that can cause severe headaches, dizziness, etc. when
used in lamps placed near one's head or body.

Please encourage the members of your groups to write your MPs in support of delay before the deadline.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/story/2011/04/15/cv-election-bulbs-deadline.html

The federal government wants to delay by two years its deadline requiring all new light bulbs sold in Canada to be energy efficient.

A newly published notice says the current deadline in 2012 would be pushed off by two years to allow time to allay concerns from consumers about new light bulbs.

Canadians have the next 75 days to comment on the proposal.

John Baird, then Canada's environment minister, announced the ban with great fanfare in April 2007, citing it as a demonstration of the Conservative government's commitment to fighting climate change.

The new notice, dated March 24, says the proposed delay would cost Canadians about $303 million to 2020 in lost energy efficiencies as the older bulbs continue to draw higher levels of electricity.

The change would also put about 13 megatonnes more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

Delaying the deadline for the new energy-efficient bulbs would also put Canada between one and two years behind the earlier schedule set in the United States. California and British Columbia have already imposed the new standard for energy-efficient light bulbs, and Ontario is considering the same.

Consumers have raised concerns about one of the most common energy-efficient bulbs, compact fluorescent lamps. These devices contain small amounts of mercury and are not readily recycled.

Environment Canada is working on regulations that would compel manufacturers to ensure the mercury-containing lamps can be recycled.

"Canadians have expressed concerns about certain aspects of the minimum energy performance standard for light bulbs," says the notice from Natural Resources Canada.

"This amendment proposes to delay the effective dates for these wattages by two years in each case in order to enable Canadians to better understand the benefits of the standards, the alternatives that will be available to them and to allay their concerns."

The proposed new deadline would require efficient 75-watt and 100-watt bulbs on Jan. 1, 2014, and 40-watt and 60-watt bulbs on Dec. 31, 2014.

Death with (wireless radiation) Waves

http://www.estrepublicain.fr/fr/24-heures-meurthe-et-moselle/info/4949828-Nancy-mort-sur-la-voie-des-ondes

As a call for help, a banner hung on the front for several months on one of the victim's property, in central Champigneulles.

Suicide or accident? If yesterday the first elements of the investigation to suggest a desperate act, the thesis of the accident could not be ruled out to explain the death of Denis R., a Champigneulles aged 56.

Yesterday morning, around 7 am 30, the lifeless body of this real estate seller was discovered along the railway lines Champigneulles, at the stage of Malnoy. The Nancy-Metz rail traffic was interrupted when two-way traffic - 25 TER TGV and 4 have been delayed - for the purposes of police investigation.

The passenger train that gave a warning to the controller, saying he saw a body on the ballast. Wounds suggests a side impact. A review should take place on Monday at the forensic institute.

It remains to ascertain the time and day of the collision because neither Friday nor Monday morning, no train driver had reported evidence relating to any shock.

Since September 2010, Denis R., a figure the town was plagued with unbearable tinnitus (ROA of 24/11/2010). It was also followed by an ENT for these disorders, emerged from him shortly after work on the railroad tracks at about 200 yards from her home in the streets of the Boatmen. For him, "emission frequencies, could come from two small shacks made of sheet-like processors and installed along the tracks, opposite his house. Even where they discovered his remains.

Equipped with a kind of electromagnetic field sensor - a material purchased several thousand euros in Germany and found around the neck of the victim yesterday morning - the Champigneulles never stopped stalking waves he considered harmful to his health. Day and night, he happened to walk down the lane and Nancy Champigneulles. The point of obsession. And the device with a headphone ear to return an impressive buzz when it was oriented towards the two barracks. An unexplained phenomenon found by the mayor and maddened also a simple compass needle ...

"I sometimes prefer to leave my apartment rather than endure this nuisance"

"It had become untenable, then explained Denis R. "Loss of sleep, nervousness. I sometimes prefer to leave my apartment rather than endure this nuisance. " It happened that he and his wife go to sleep at friends to find some peace. The couple planned to move but even at 21 pm Friday night, the agent suddenly left home, never to reappear ...

The complainant had stored an impressive documentation of these waves may be the cause of his suffering and wrote many letters to Mary, to the rail network of France (RFF), the SNCF, the prefecture ... A study by a specialist company have found a "hypersensitive hearing obsession." Not enough to satisfy the person who questioned the impartiality of the conclusion. Contacted yesterday, the official duty station responsible for managing the disruption caused by this tragedy, was not aware of all these complaints.

Denis R. was at the origin of a petition on the subject in the district, supported by twenty residents. As a call for help, a white sheet hung for several months on the facade of one of its property, at 57, rue de Nancy. With this message written in red: "Frequency kills ear for over 10 weeks. The mayor noted. Transmitted. Nothing moves. "

A few have no doubts about smart meters' ill effects

By John Richardson jrichardson@mainetoday.com
Staff Writer March 6, 2011

http://www.onlinesentinel.com/news/health-concernscontinue-to-circle-cmp-smart-meters_2011-03-05.html

Julie Tupper's home is a wireless-free zone.

"I used to have wireless in the house (for computer Interent service) and I knew something strange was going on. I had it pulled out, and the difference was night and day," she said.

The joint pain and other aches she had struggled with disappeared, she said. Soon the cordless phone was gone, too, and the microwave retired. "I (got) all wireless out of my home, because I knew it was causing problems for me."

Tupper, of South Portland, is one of an unknown number of Mainers who consider themselves especially sensitive to the invisible radio frequency waves sent out by wireless communication devices. Some, like Tupper, have turned their homes into safe havens where they can retreat, at least to some degree, from the ubiquitous radio waves floating around most offices, homes and residential neighborhoods.

Now, they say, they also are feeling the effects of new wireless electrical meters -- smart meters -- that Central Maine Power Co. is installing on homes in their neighborhoods. Some say symptoms such as heart palpatations and sleeplessness were bad enough to force them out of their homes until the meters could be removed temporarily.

Tupper and nine others filed a complaint with the Maine Public Utilities Commission in late February. It is the sixth petition seeking to suspend CMP's smart meter changeover or force the company to offer an alternative to customers who don't want the devices on their homes for a variety of reasons.

Maine, followed closely by California, is on track to become the first state to decide whether homeowners have a right to reject the new generation of electricity meters.

"There are utilities all across the country facing this or similar questions," said John Carroll, spokesman for CMP. "We are ahead of everybody."

The newest petition is the first one in Maine to focus exclusively on the health issue. It also raises the question of whether customers have a right to keep entire neighborhoods, or communities, free of smart meters and the wireless signals they send.

Health experts and government agencies say there is no scientific proof that the technology has anything to with joint pains, headaches, dizziness, sleeplessness and other symptoms reported by the 10 Mainers who signed the petition, or by residents in other states who are reporting similar reactions. There also is no conclusive proof that the radio frequency waves are not causing health effects and the question deserves more study, they say.

For CMP, unproven health concerns are not enough to stall new technology that promises to improve the efficiency of the grid and cut costs for the company and its ratepayers.

"There does not appear to be a link that is going to make these people sick," Carroll said. "The signals from these meters are very, very low-powered." Also, an average meter will send signals only a total of 4.4 seconds during a day, he said.

Those who insist they can feel the health effects, however, say they don't want to be part of any smart-meter experiment.

"You try to maintain your home as a place where you can get away from it," Tupper said. "People are saying, 'Oh, this isn't real.' This is real. People are getting sick. ... Someone like me is the canary in the coal mine."

Tupper said she's never been able to hold a cell phone to her head without a sharp headache, and can get heart palpatations or dizziness when driving near cell towers. "It's like an allergy. You might not be allergic to mold, but somebody else is," she said.

CMP agreed to bypass Tupper's home, at least until the PUC complaints are resolved, but she can feel the signals from her neighbors' meters, she said. "I was sitting watching TV and I said to my husband, 'Oh, my god. They're here. I can feel it,' " she said. "It was kind of a jolting sensation."

While her husband doesn't feel the radio waves, she said, she can't go on one side of her property because it's too close to her neighbor's smart meter.

"It would be great if we could say for a 250-foot surrounding area, no smart meters," she said, but added, "What we want to do now is to focus on trying to create a safe haven for ourselves in our homes."

Gregg Levey, another petitioner, said CMP put a smart meter on the outside of his Falmouth home in December.

"About three or four days after this thing was put in, I just started tossing and turning at night, like major insomnia, and I had never had insomnia before," he said.

Levey, unlike Conroy, made the connection after he mentioned his sleeplessness to a friend who is a smart-meter opponent. "She told me insomnia is the No. 1 symptom," he said.

The Leveys called CMP in early January and, within a day, the company put the old analog meter back on the house.

"Once it was taken out and I started to sleep more, it very much convinced me that this is what was doing it. It was pretty clear," Levey said. "It's my home, and I shoud be able to make the choice."

Gregg Levey's wife, Anat, said she felt the effects, too.

"With me, it was every time I walked toward the house where the meter was, which happens to be (outside) our kitchen, I got really, really dizzy," she said. "Ever since they removed it, I don't get that dizziness anymore."

Nancy Burns, a petitioner from Windham, said she's dealt with all kinds of allergies and environmental sensitivies her whole life.

"Microwaves I don't use anymore. With TVs, I try to sit back a good distance," said Burns, who lives in Windham. "I knew the meter would probably be bad for me, but I didn't object when they installed it, because I didn't know I could object."

CMP installed a smart meter on her home in December, she said.

"At first I started being dizzy when getting up out of bed. I didn't think anything of it," she said. "It gradually got worse and worse."

She had back pain, headaches, confusion and panic attacks, she said. She got relief by sleeping in her car and then in a motel for a few nights before asking CMP to remove the meter, she said.

"I can't live with it; I know that," she said. "It's hard to tell these things to people because they don't believe you."

Petitioners said their physicians have been supportive, although few in the medical community have publicly validated the health concerns.

One physician based in Scarborough, Stephen Kirsch, wrote a letter to the PUC last month saying further investigation of the health effects is needed.

"I have been treating one of my patients that I believe has suffered deleterious effects of smart meter installation in her community of South Portland," Kirsch wrote. He did not identify the patient and did not respond to an interview request last week.

"She has recovered after being hospitalized and returning to her daughter's home," he wrote. "She is fearful and unwilling to return to her home. Futhermore, my patient, her daughter and I are concerned that smart meters may be installed around and at her current safe haven in Scarborough."

Officially, there is no evidence that the waves coming from smart meters -- or other common wireless devices, for that matter -- are affecting the health of people around them, according to state and federal health and regulatory agencies.

The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention presented the PUC in November with a review of government research in the United States and other countries.

"Our review of these agency assessments and studies do not indicate any consistent or convincing evidence to support a concern for health effects, ..." the agency said. It also found no evidence of a link to "symptoms that have been described as electromagnectic sensitivity."

A more detailed study by the California Council on Science and Technology in January came to the same conclusion, saying smart meters result in smaller levels of radio frequency exposure than cell phones and microwave ovens.

"To date, scientific studies have not identified or confirmed negative health effects," it said.

The reviews also say more research is needed to identify, or rule out, health effects at various levels of exposure.

So far, the PUC has sidestepped the health issue. In response to previous complaints, it deferred to the Federal Communications Commission, which sets safety standards for wireless transmissions and has deemed the meters to be well within safety limits.

"The commission does not have the institutional expertise regarding potential RF health impacts," the PUC wrote in a recent filing.

It's unclear wether the new petition will force the PUC to examine the issue.

CMP is sure to argue that the complaint be dismissed. It already has replied to earlier complaints with testimony from a scientific expert who argued there is no proof of any health effects from the meters or similar sources of radio frequency waves.

Carroll, the CMP spokesman, said the argument by Tupper and others that they are being affected by their neighbors' smart meters raises other issues for the company and the smart meter project.

He said the level coming from neighboring homes is similar to the levels given off by the human body. Also, he said, homeowners shouldn't have to get their neighbors' permission to have a smart meter.

"If you're living in a neighborhood, you're within the field of your neighbor's cell phone or your neighbor's wi-fi router," Carroll said. "No one has ever exercized a property right that says your radio signal is trespassing on my property. Under that scenario, you could go over after WBLM radio."

So far, CMP has installed about 137,000 smart meters. About 3,000 households have opted out while the issue is pending before the PUC, Carroll said.

CMP and some lead complainants have met to discuss a settlement of the smart meter dispute. One possible resolution could give customers a choice to opt out -- if they agree to pay a higher fee for wireless-free meters.

However, allowing customers simply to opt out would jeopardize the benefits of the entire project, as well as the $96 million in federal funds for the two-year smart-meter project. "That could erode the effectiveness and efficiency of the system," Carroll said.

Microwave Radiation Affects the Heart

March 7, 2011.

During the past year I have become increasingly interested in the effects of microwave radiation on the heart. This interest is based on a number of observations.

Some people who are electrically sensitive complain that they have a rapid or irregular heart beat and feel chest pressure or pain (Eltiti, 2007). We conducted a "proof of concept" study to determine if we could measure heart rate changes caused by microwave radiation with real-time monitoring. We found that some individuals developed a rapid or an irregular heart beat when exposed to pulsed microwaves (from a cordless phone base station) at levels considered safe by the WHO, FCC, and Health Canada (Havas et al. 2010).

During the past year I have heard stories that children who attend schools with WiFi are complaining of a racing heart while in school (link to video). Two of these students in the Barrie area (Canada) were given heart monitors to wear and one young girl was scheduled for heart surgery because her cardiologist couldn't figure out what was wrong. Her parents postponed the operation, removed the WiFi in their home, and her symptoms did not return during the summer when she wasn't attending school.

Legislating light bulbs has dark side

By Bronwyn Eyre, The StarPhoenix
I recently happened upon a forlorn news item that put me into a slow boil.
"The last major GE factory making ordinary incandescent light bulbs in the United States is closing, marking a small, sad exit for a product and company that can trace their roots to Thomas Edison's innovations in the 1870s," the story began.
The factory, in Winchester, Va., is closing as a result of the 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act, passed by Congress, that set standards essentially banning ordinary incandescents by 2014. The law will, of course, force millions of households to switch to more efficient bulbs.
In 2007, the Harper government also decided incandescent bulbs would be phased out in Canada in 2012. In Europe, the phase-out of the traditional light bulb has already begun.
As has the hoarding of incandescents, on both sides of the Atlantic.
Most anti-CFLers talk of the sickly light the new compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) emit. But many also feel extremely uneasy about the dangers they embody.
A LOOK AT HEALTH CANADA'S WEBSITE QUICKLY SHOWS WHY.
After a brief mention of how ultraviolet radiation from CFLs can affect people with skin sensitivities, the site details a list of imperatives should a CFL, which contains mercury, be broken -- as follows:
- Remove people and pets from the room and ventilate it for at least 15 minutes prior to starting cleanup;
- Don't use a vacuum to clean up the initial breakage, as it will spread mercury vapour throughout the area;
- Scoop up the broken pieces with two pieces of stiff paper or cardboard, not a broom;
- Use tape, then a damp towel or cloth, to pick up any remaining glass or powder;
- Place the broken glass and cleanup materials in a tight-fitting glass container to further minimize the release of mercury vapour;
- If the rug is removable, take it outside and shake and air it thoroughly;
- Dispose of the waste at a household hazardous waste location as soon as possible, not in your household trash.
There's also increasing talk about the "dirty electricity" compact fluorescents give off. Drawing on reports by an international group of scientists that link brain malignancies to electromagnetic radiation (EMR) in dirty electricity, syndicated columnist Dr. W. Gifford-Jones recently counselled his readers to "avoid low voltage halogen tubes and energy-efficient compact fluorescent lighting."
Still feel like buying a CFL?
I realize the estimated life of a CFL is roughly 10 times that of an incandescent (although its use in frigid weather reduces that considerably, as does frequent on-off switching).
But who wants to have to deal with a daily dose of dirty electricity as well as mercury contamination in the event of a broken bulb?
These concerns aside, what if you just want to stay with incandescents because you like them? Or because you resent the fact that virtually all manufacturing of light bulbs will now be carried out in China, where labour is cheaper? Or because you suspect other unanticipated consequences?
For example, some years ago Ontario Hydro offered rebates to consumers who bought energy efficient fridges. Many did, but then moved their old fridges downstairs to use as "beer fridges" -- thereby adding to energy demand. It's human nature: As efficiencies improve, utilization tends to climb.
With the conversion to CFLs, the most irksome aspect of all is the nanny-statism behind it -- what some refer to as "light bulb socialism."
I, for one, don't appreciate the imminent banning of a fixture whose light may be "dirty" and which, when broken -- and bulb breakages occur in all households from time to time -- may make my house toxic. If that makes me a luddite dinosaur, well, I want to be free to be a luddite dinosaur.
I also want to be able to buy incandescent bulbs and not have some political legislation prevent me from doing so.
I'm reminded of the European bureaucrats who love to invent killjoy regulations -- such as the "bent cucumber rule," whereby any cucumber with a curvature of more than 10 millimeters per 10 centimeters in length cannot be categorized as "class one."
Banning the incandescent bulb is similar madness. But as they say, we're generally unaware of the madnesses of our own times.

Wireless Electrical and Electromagnetic Pollution News

19 October 2010

This is the documentary on WiFi in schools that was on Global TV 16 by 9, The Bigger Picture on Sunday October 17, 2010.  It is just under 15 minutes and is excellent!  Parents and teachers we need to do something about this since children are exposed to microwave radiation without anyone protecting them, not the government, not the school board and certainly not the IT Departments!

Teachers need to speak out especially if they are sensitive and reacting to this radiation.  Parents and grandparents also need to speak out if their children are reacting adversely with headaches, dizziness, heart irregularities, etc.

The good news is that we can still access internet in schools by using wires rather than wireless technology without being exposed to microwave radiation.

Ont. school cuts Wi-Fi, cites health concerns

Mon Oct. 18 2010 9:26:36 AM

http://toronto.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20101018/wifi-school-safety-101019/20101018/?hub=TorontoNewHome

A Meaford, Ont. public school is the first in the nation to shut down wireless Internet in classrooms amidst a growing debate over the effects of wireless emissions on children.

Parents of students at St. Vincent Euphrasia elementary school voted "overwhelmingly" to cut off the Wi-Fi, according to a statement released by the school's parent council Monday.

"Parents voted to protect their children's health and plug the computers back in with hardwires," council member Andrew Couper said in the statement.

Wi-Fi "is something every school council across Canada should be questioning," Couper said.

St. Vincent Euphrasia is one of a handful of schools to look into a Wi-Fi ban in recent months over fears it's making students sick.

A group of Ontario parents dubbed the Simcoe County Safe School Committee believes Wi-Fi transmitters in schools may be responsible for a host of symptoms their kids show -- from headaches to an inability to concentrate -- all of which disappear on weekends.

They first spoke out against school Wi-Fi this summer, prompting government officials to weigh the effects of wireless technology on children.

Ontario Education Minister Leona Dombrowsky said in August the matter is in Ottawa's hands.

Meanwhile, Dr. Arlene King, Ontario's chief medical officer of health, said that Wi-Fi poses no threat to children in schools.

King said it's understandable that people are confused by the debate over the safety of Wi-Fi transmitters in schools, given the sometimes conflicting evidence.

However, King said people need to look at the weight of the literature on the topic, especially from authorities like the World Health Organization, which says exposure to Wi-Fi is safe.

Health Canada says there is "no convincing scientific evidence" that Wi-Fi in schools is dangerous to children.

German "Heatball" whiz outwits EU light bulb ban

October 15, 2010

http://news.yahoo.com:80/s/nm/20101015/od_nm/us_germany_heatballs;_ylt=AtttlbcuRDys4tW7uA22Sbys0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTFmN3MxbTZtBHBvcwMyMDQEc2VjA2FjY29yZGlvbl9vZGRfbmV3cwRzbGsDZ2VybWFucXVvdGhl

BERLIN (Reuters) – A German entrepreneur is bypassing a European Union ban on light bulbs of more than 60 watts by marketing his own brand as mini heaters.

Siegfried Rotthaeuser and his brother-in-law have come up with a legal way of importing and distributing 75 and 100 watt light bulbs -- by producing them in China, importing them as "small heating devices" and selling them as "heatballs."

To improve energy efficiency, the EU has banned the sale of bulbs of over 60 watts -- to the annoyance of the mechanical engineer from the western city of Essen.

Rotthaeuser studied EU legislation and realized that because the inefficient old bulbs produce more warmth than light -- he calculated heat makes up 95 percent of their output, and light just 5 percent -- they could be sold legally as heaters.

On their website (http://heatball.de/), the two engineers describe the heatballs as "action art" and as "resistance against legislation which is implemented without recourse to democratic and parliamentary processes."

Costing 1.69 euros each ($2.38), the heatballs are going down well -- the first batch of 4,000 sold out in three days.

Rotthaeuser has pledged to donate 30 cents of every heatball sold to saving the rainforest, which the 49-year-old sees as a better way of protecting the environment than investing in energy-saving lamps, which contain toxic mercury.

Woman Claims Navy Frequency Is Cause Of Heart Issues

Susanne Reedy Says Frequency Gives Her Pacemaker Problems

October 14, 2010

http://www.10news.com/news/25396744/detail.html

SAN DIEGO -- A San Diego woman claims the U.S. Navy is putting her life at risk by not properly examining an issue that could cause her heart to stop.

At first, Susanne Reedy believed her pacemaker was acting up. Now, every time she tries to open her car door, she said her heart can literally skip a beat.

"That's frightening because my life depends on this," said Reedy.

Born with a congenital heart defect, Reedy has had a pacemaker for 15 years with few problems.

However, six months ago, she began suffering episodes of irregular heartbeat during some trips to the Hillcrest area, where she works as a hospital technician.

"I would get winded. It felt like my heart was pounding sideways," Reedy told 10News.

Last week, she got winded and her heart started to flutter. She went to her car and could not unlock it with the remote.

Reedy said each time she experienced the symptoms, her car remote was not working. A review of her doctor's appointments showed during her last two visits, other remotes in San Diego were not working properly.

In April and late July of this year, 10News reported on widespread remote failures from Point Loma to La Jolla. The manufacturers blamed it on Navy ships, but the Navy did not take responsibility. But Navy officials said many military bases often use the same frequency range as some consumer devices.

"Furious. That makes me angry. I just want the Navy to stop doing this; that's it," said Reedy.

The pacemaker company confirmed they have received several complaints, and they said they could not rule out widespread interference hampering pacemakers.

The problems could leave Reedy vulnerable to a stroke or worse.

"It gives us a big 'what if,'" said Reedy.

In a statement, Navy officials said: "We empathize with neighbors … We don't know what's causing any local interference. The Navy continues to operate within the mandated … radio communications band."

Letter to the Editor

Peterborough Examiner

September 30, 2010

I just returned from a meeting of the KPR District School Board, where Peterborough's Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Rosanna Pellizzari, made a presentation about the "Safety of WiFi in Schools."

Dr. Pellizzari said that anyone can cherry pick results to support their conclusions and this is exactly what she did.

She did state at the beginning of her talk that she was not an expert in this field and then gave opinions that could have been offered only by experts. Experts conduct research and publish on the effects of electromagnetic energy but Dr. Pellizzari hasn't even read the primary research in this field. She based her presentation on a few reports and then "cherry picked" her quotes.

She quoted from a review of WiFi released by the Ontario Agency for Health Promotion and Protection (OAHPP) on September 16, 2010. You can read this document and comments about it at:

http://www.magdahavas.com/2010/09/23/oahpp-comments-on-wifi-and-health/

Of the many "cherry picked" quotes was the amount of radiation coming from a WiFi laptop computer at a distance of 1 meter. I don't know of anyone who sits that far away from a laptop computer. Indeed some people place their computers on their lap and their hands are in contact with the keyboard when they are typing! This would give a much higher reading than one taken 3 feet away!

Dr. Pellizzari correctly stated that the research on WiFi does not support the Bradford-Hill criteria of causation. However, she left the false impression that studies have been conducted and they failed the test. This is false!

There is only ONE study (that I'm aware of) on the biological effects of WiFi and that study reported that donated sperm showed DNA damage and reduced motility when exposed to a WiFi computer. That's it! We have no long-term studies on WiFi and we have no idea how this radiation is going to affect growing bodies.

The closest research is on adults who use cell phones and adults who live near cell phone antennas. These studies show a disturbing increased risk of various tumors after 10 years of cell phone use on the same side of the head to which you hold your cell phone and an increased incidence of cancers and other health effects for those who live within 500 meters of cell towers. If we are basing the effects of WiFi exposure on these studies then we have much to be concerned about!

During her presentation Dr. Pellizzari showed a small video clip of a story on The CBC National about WiFi in schools that aired September 8. The clip was of Beth Pieterson who was speaking on behalf of Health Canada. Had she shown the entire 11-minute segment the KPRD School Board would have been left with a very different impression that would have been contradictory to what Dr. Pellizzari intended, so she "cherry picked" a very small portion of the video to support her views.

The CBC video can be viewed at:

http://www.cbc.ca/video/#/News/TV_Shows/The_National/ID=1587312590

Watch the related segment by Wendy Mesley on cell phones and decide if you think this radiation is harmless.

http://www.cbc.ca/thenational/indepthanalysis/wendymesley/2010/09/cellphone_safety_what_arent_they_telling_us.html

I was particularly disturbed that Dr. Pellizzari gave the impression that WiFi has been measured in schools and the levels are so low they couldn't possible have any effects.

Most schools with WiFi have not measured the levels of microwave radiation in schools and especially where children sit. Since some schools use industrial strength WiFi, which is much more powerful than the WiFi people have in their homes, I don't think we can be blasé about this exposure.

Indeed, the ONLY statement with which I agree is that Dr. Pellizzari recommended that schools monitor microwave exposure, although she said, "If they can afford to do this."

We cannot afford not to measure exposure!

We are exposing children to microwave radiation that has been shown to induce breaks in DNA, increase membrane permeability of the blood brain barrier, alter the movement of calcium between cells, reduce sperm motility and viability, cause heart irregularities, alter brain wave activity at levels well below our federal guidelines that are based on how much heat can be dissipated by a 6 foot, 180 lb soldier!

Where are the guidelines that protect the growing bodies of children? And, does anyone care about the exposure of teachers?

Subject: Washington Post article: FCC changes cellphone safety guidance, October 1, 2010

Date: Fri, 1 Oct 2010 07:49:39 -0700

The Cellular Telephone and Internet Association meets in San Francisco next week for its annual meeting. It seems likely that FDA changed its guidance recommending consumers purchase low EMF phones after taking this event into account. San Francisco passed legislation earlier this year to require retailers in that city to post the EMF emission levels (otherwise known as SAR, for Specific Absorption Rate) for each phone they sell.

The CITA, who lobbied hard against this bill has announced that they are not planning any future conferences in San Francisco in retaliation. What is the CTIA and the FDA afraid of - the truth?

Tell the City of San Francisco to hang tough. The truth is becoming known about what the cell phone radiation science tells us about the health risks they pose.

THE COZY RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE FCC AND THE CTIA EXPOSED THIS WEEK

The CTIA-Wireless Association has been caught this week in secret cooperation with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) over website changes ostensibly intended to serve a dual purpose for the wireless lobby.  The FCC, who oversees the telecommunications industry, appears to have changed their website to help the CTIA in its lawsuit against the city of San Francisco following passage of The Right to Know cell phone legislation and additionally, to help in the CTIA's attempt to stop the spread of this legislation from city to city.

The CTIA is suing the City of San Francisco over the recently passed Right to Know cell phones legislation that demands every cell phone sold in San Francisco be labeled with the SAR rating.

Until Sept 20, 2010 the FCC advised buying a lower SAR cell phone.  The CTIA vehemently opposed this Right To Know legislation in San Francisco which passed in June.  The CTIA then sued the city.

When the relatively small city of Burlingame, CA decided to hold discussions about possible Right To Know legislation, the CTIA sent top officials from Washington, D.C. to the city of 27,000  to take their turn at explaining why the citizens of Burlingame should not have the opportunity to see how much radiation was being emitted from their cell phones.

The evening of the hearing the CTIA said the FCC did NOT suggest buying a lower SAR phone.  He could say this only because the FCC website had been altered a matter of hours before he spoke.  The FCC changed their website on the day of the hearing when they discovered, through documentation submitted by supporters of the legislation, that the FCC website suggested buying a lower SAR cell phone.  The FCC website was shut down for awhile on Sept 20, and came back up later that day with the advisory missing and other language pertaining to this issue changed.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) October 1, 2010

84 percent of Americans own a cell phone, 89 million of us watch TV beamed to us by satellite, and we can't have a cup of coffee our local café without being exposed to Wi-Fi. Wireless internet, smart phones, and laptops have transformed the way we work and live. But what are the consequences of this revolution? The same technology that allows us to video chat with friends across the world and surf the Internet from the comfort of our beds has exposed us to a dangerous and unprecedented number of electromagnetic fields (EMFs). We are constantly being exposed to EMFs—invisible lines of force that surround all electrical devices—at a rate 100 million times greater than our grandparents were. In her groundbreaking new book ZAPPED (HarperOne, Hardcover $25.99, on-sale October 2010), health expert and New York Times bestselling author Ann Louise Gittleman reveals startling truths about the invisible hazards of the 21st century that will motivate us to change how we use our laptops, how we locate our home electronics and televisions, and even how we sleep.

Radiation from cell phones is just the tip of the iceberg. In ZAPPED, Gittleman explores emerging evidence that EMFs from wall outlets, refrigerators, computers, dimmer switches, hair dryers, and a host of other everyday devices are creating energy disturbances within the body, leading to increased free radicals and disruptions in cellular DNA, which are in turn linked to a wide range of negative health effects, including tumors, chronic fatigue, and other diseases. These risks are especially high for children, whose developing bones are thinner than adults, making them even more vulnerable to electromagnetic disturbances in the brain and other organs.

ZAPPED is a call to action. Gittleman reviews the latest scientific research and provides a proactive plan to counteract the toxic effects of overexposure. Small changes, including how we use our electronic devices and how we arrange our living and working spaces, can make a big difference in our levels of exposure to EMF radiation. Her practical approach moves room by room, teaching readers how to identify and remedy the electromagnetic trouble spots in their homes and offices. Gittleman offers concrete solutions to zap-proof our lives, such as:

  •     Hold your cell phone away from your head when the call is connecting—that's when the signal is strongest.
  •     Keep televisions out of the bedroom. They emit AC magnetic fields that interfere with the production of melatonin, the hormone that governs your Circadian rhythms.
  •     Eat to beat EMFs. Superfoods and seasonings such as artichokes and cinnamon help to replace the anti-oxidants, enzymes, and nutrients that electro pollution can rob from your body. Gittleman's expertise in nutrition allows her to formulate a diet that turns your body into a shield against EMFs and other electronic dangers.

Are we going to give up our cell phones, laptops, and other electronics? Absolutely not, but emerging scientific evidence tells us that it is crucial to make important changes in our home and work environments. A must-read for anyone who is plugged in, ZAPPED teaches readers how to survive the dangers of technology and thrive in the wireless age. For more information, visit the official site at www.areyouzapped.com.

"At a time when Electro-Magnetic Fields (EMF's) have reached a toxic level, Gittleman has developed a proactive approach for dealing with the constant bombardment. Rather than terrorize readers with the negatives, she offers them practical, step-by-step solutions for altering the invisible forces that now surround us all. Great idea. Great book."

Background:

New research released in the new expose book "Disconnect" shows that cell phones are not as safe as we think they are.  "Disconnect" shows that "the most popular gadget ever has been shown to damage DNA, break down the brain's defenses and reduce sperm count, while increasing memory loss, the risk of cancer and neurological diseases such as Alzhiemer's and possibly even autism."   In her talk, Dr. Davis will discuss the efforts by the cell phone industry to hide the potential dangers of cell phone radiation and what people can do to protect themselves and children from harm.

The City of San Francisco has been in the forefront of dealing with this issue by recently passing the countries first "Right to Know" law requiring the publication of Cell Phone Radiation levels.  The City has been sued by the industry "trade association" which coincidentally will be kicking off their national conference at the Moscone Center next Tuesday.
