Mayoral candidate plans to cut waves'
Posted By MIKE BEITZ , STAFF REPORTER

Stratford Beacon Herald

http://www.stratfordbeaconherald.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=2692978

The race for mayor of Stratford has officially begun.

Martin Weatherall said the health and safety of city residents is the single most important issue in the October municipal election and he's willing to seek the top elected spot to draw attention to it.

"This is a way of me being able to possibly make a change which will help a lot of people and save a lot of people from getting hurt," he said Thursday, referring to exposure to electromagnetic and specifically microwave radiation, which he believes is a significant danger to people living in the city.

Cordless phones, wireless computer routers and especially the citywide high-speed wireless network and smart meters being installed in Stratford all pose a health risk due to microwave radiation, he said, pointing to short-term effects such as headaches, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, muscle and joint pain and dizziness and longer-term effects such as various cancers, depression and anxiety and heart and cardiovascular problems.

"It's probably the most significant environmental health problem that we have today," he said.

Being elected mayor will afford him the opportunity to better educate citizens about the dangers they face from electric and electromagnetic emissions, said Weatherall, who for the last four years has been the co-director of WEEP, a Canadian non- profit organization dedicated to informing the public about the potential environmental effects associated with them.

"People have to know how dangerous this is," he said, "and we have to find a way to make this city safe. Someone's got to make a start."

Weatherall said he recognizes he may be seen as a one-issue candidate but suggested he has more to offer.

"A councillor or mayor needs to have common sense and experience in life to be able to judge municipal issues and I think I've got that background," said Weatherall, who served for seven years with the British Royal Navy and 28 years with the Toronto Police Service, first as a uniformed officer and then as a forensic crime scene investigator.

"I think I can look at any issue that comes up and look at it evenly and come up with a reasonable solution," he said.

Weatherall, who moved to Stratford with his wife just more than a year ago, said he's concerned with the level of city debt and property tax rates, which he said are too high.

"We're going to have to get the debt to a reasonable level, keep spending within reason and manage the budget much better," he said.

He would also encourage the development of new sustainable industries in Stratford and work to breathe new life into empty factories.

"Marketing Stratford as a nice place to be and to work would be the priority there," he said. "Stratford is a beautiful place with lovely people, and I think that's the way to encourage people to move out here."

Weatherall highlighted a need for greater participation in the decision-making process among residents as another priority.

A lack of public debate over issues such as the installation of smart-meters and the Wi-Fi network, and the potential dangers involved, is evidence of that need, he said.

"This is something that should have been debated in a public meeting," he said. "The health effects should have been talked about, and the costs should have been talked about."

But while those concerns over taxes, industrial development and participation in the public process are all significant, he said, his primary focus in the race for mayor will be on the dangers of electromagnetic radiation.

"Health and safety is the most important thing for the citizens of Stratford," he said.

Security Vulnerabilities of Smart Electricity Meters
Schneier on Security

July 29, 2010

"Who controls the off switch?" by Ross Anderson and Shailendra Fuloria.

Abstract: We're about to acquire a significant new cybervulnerability. The world's energy utilities are starting to install hundreds of millions of 'smart meters' which contain a remote off switch. Its main purpose is to ensure that customers who default on their payments can be switched remotely to a prepay tariff; secondary purposes include supporting interruptible tariffs and implementing rolling power cuts at times of supply shortage.

The off switch creates information security problems of a kind, and on a scale, that the energy companies have not had to face before. From the viewpoint of a cyber attacker -- whether a hostile government agency, a terrorist organisation or even a militant environmental group -- the ideal attack on a target country is to interrupt its citizens' electricity supply. This is the cyber equivalent of a nuclear strike; when electricity stops, then pretty soon everything else does too. Until now, the only plausible ways to do that involved attacks on critical generation, transmission and distribution assets, which are increasingly well defended.

Smart meters change the game. The combination of commands that will cause meters to interrupt the supply, of applets and software upgrades that run in the meters, and of cryptographic keys that are used to authenticate these commands and software changes, create a new strategic vulnerability, which we discuss in this paper.

The two have another paper on the economics of smart meters. Blog post here.

It is not just humans who are affected – Valladoid, Spain, White Storks Study 2005 Number of young per couple for nests within 200m of the antenna was 0.86 (0.7 – 1.02) p=0.001whereas productivity for nests further than 300m away was 1.6 (1.46 – 1.74) p = 0.00140% of those nesting within 200m had no chicks, whereas only 3.3% of those further than 300m did not have chicks.

The white stork behavior recorded within 200m included:The couple frequently fight over the sticks The sticks fall to the ground when trying to build the nest The most affected nests never get built Frequent death of young chicks in their early stages Balmori A, 2005, Possible Effects of Electromagnetic Fields from Phone Masts on a Population of White Stork, electromagnetic Biology and Medicine.

Loscher and Kas of Universities of Hannover Veterinary School and University of the German Army in Munich 1998. A study funded by the Bavarian State Government in Germany following reported adverse health effects in dairy cattle after a Telecoms Mast had been erected. There was a significant drop in the milk yield of that herd of cattle and Extraordinary Behaviour Disorders in some of the cows related to the microwave transmissions from that Mast. When the cattle were moved away from its vicinity after a period the milk yield and the behavior of that herd was totally restored to normal. However, when the cattle were returned to the mast environment their symptoms returned.

The effects of EMR are being felt by wildlife and the environment as a whole, Birds, bees, worms, trees are all being affected. We need to fight for not only the future of mankind but for the future of the whole environment.

Children Act 1989 Part 3 Section 17 Places a legal obligation on Local Authorities to protect children in their area against significant harm and or abuse or the risk of. The Children Act stands apart from other legislation in so much as the risk of harm does not have to be proven or to have taken place, but could be a likelihood or perceived risk.

UK and EU precautionary understanding The EC and UK Precautionary Principle The precautionary principle covers cases where the scientific evidence is insufficient, inconclusive or uncertain, but where there is some indication of reasonable grounds for concern of adverse effects on the environment or health. The precautionary principle provides a basis for action when science is unable to give a clear answer.

Who is accountable? In the UK all agencies refer back to the Health Protection Agency for advice. The world looks towards the World Health Organisation (WHO) We urgently request that the HPA and WHO advise governments and Authorities to adopt the precautionary principle for mobile phones/phone masts,DECT phones, microwave baby and security alarms and not to install wireless computer networks until safety is approved.

The Government receives an estimated 10 billion a year in revenue from the mobile phone industry. Emergency Government funds should be released. Starting with at least 50 million in order to deal with translation of German and Russian research, an education program, media campaign and funding released to Independent scientists to carry out further research.

The funds could be given to the EMF Discussion Group Chaired by Sir William Stewart as it has a mixed group of experts with different views and opinions which leads to a healthy debate and should help avoid the continued criticism and mistrust from the public who have lost faith in the democratic process and blame discrepancy of funding for research.

The phone industry are un-elected officials who forcefully and undemocratically ignore the wishes and concerns of local communities.

In the words of – Dr Robert O. Becker twice nominated for the Nobel Prize have no doubt in my mind that at the present time, the greatest polluting element in the earths environment is the proliferation of electromagnetic fields. I consider that to be far greater on a global scale, than warming, and the increase in chemical elements in the environment.

Parents question Wi-Fi

Public school board says it's following Canadian safety guidelines

http://www.orilliapacket.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=2626271&

NATHAN TAYLOR

The Packet & Times

"I don't know what to do, and I'm scared."

Betty Churchley isn't the only one looking for answers to the list of unknowns surrounding her 12-year-old son's symptoms, which she believes could be a product of electromagnetic radiation coming from the wireless Internet (Wi-Fi) in her son's school, Mountain View Elementary School in Collingwood.

Fighting back tears, Churchley spoke about her son, who uses a heart monitor because of an erratic heartbeat that she said began when Wi-Fi was installed at the school.

The Collingwood mother was among the 80 or so people who attended an information session last week at Collingwood's Leisure Time Centre. The meeting was organized by the recently formed Simcoe Safe School Committee.

The committee, made up of mental health counsellors, chiropractors and others in the community, paid to bring Magda Havas, associate professor at Trent University, to make a presentation. Havas has conducted electromagnetic research for 20 years, and she believes Wi-Fi should not be in schools.

"If this was happening to my child," Havas told Churchley, "I'd take them out of Mountain View school."

Angel Bavelaar, of Wasaga Beach, came to the meeting with her eight-year-old son, Dalton, who has been diagnosed with superventricular tachycardia, the symptoms of which includes a racing heart.

Bavelaar had to pause to regain her composure while describing her son's conditions.

"He has every single symptom you can think of. It breaks my heart," she said. "He was a normal kid, then it was almost like he had ADHD, stopped sleeping, cried all the time. He just wasn't himself."

"I feel like I'm going to fall and it feels like I'm not really in my body and I can't move," Dalton explained.

Bavelaar said Dalton has collapsed five times at his school, Birchview Dunes Elementary School.

"It's always at school where he seems worse," she said. "Even if it turns out that he's just got a normal heart condition, the Wi-Fi isn't helping anything."

Christine MacLean is undecided. She attended the meeting as part of her continued quest to find out what's causing symptoms — such as nausea and trouble sleeping — experienced by her kids, who attend Mountain View. She wants to know the differences between symptoms related to anxiety and those caused by electromagnetic fields.

She explained how her children's symptoms subsided when they were away from Wi-Fi, "only to re-experience them when we spent a weekend in a Toronto hotel" that had wireless Internet.

The Simcoe County District School Board implemented Wi-Fi in all of its schools as part of its information and communication technology (ICT) strategic plan. The board has been faced with criticism recently by some parents of Mountain View students.

But the board's policy conforms to Health Canada's guidelines.

"We count on our government regulators to help us out," said board superintendent John Dance. "We've taken a look at it… and we have to say there's nothing there that says (Wi-Fi) is unsafe."

The board has been accused of knowingly putting kids' health at risk by not exercising the precautionary principle, which calls for all risks to be eliminated in the absence of conclusive evidence they cause harm.

"You're not going to cross the road because you might get hit by a car? That's simplistic, I know, but the precautionary principle is not based on science," Dance said, adding, "there hasn't been any medical evidence from medical doctors" saying its usage in schools is harmful to children.

At an earlier meeting, the board brought in physicist Tony Muc, who agreed the technology was safe. The parents argue that Muc did not focus on the biological effects.

"I understand that," Dance said, "but when you bring in someone with hard science, you go with scientific answers."

Havas maintains Health Canada's Safety Code 6, which sets guidelines for radiofrequency exposure, "does not protect anyone against biological health effects."

"We've got to educate school officials that this technology is not safe. We're not saying don't use the Internet," she said, noting they are asking that the board recognize potential hazards and exercise the precautionary principle. "They're not doing that, and they're hiding behind Health Canada."

No representatives from the Simcoe County District School Board were at last week's meeting, as they were at their own finance meeting. But Paul Wehrle made it.

Wehrle is a trustee with the Bluewater District School Board, which also has Wi-Fi in all of its schools.

"I have three grandchildren in the system, and I'm very nervous," he said. "We're immersing children in an electromagnetic environment that we really don't know anything about."

Not knowing is the frustrating part, said Wehrle, who represents Meaford and the Blue Mountains.

"You have a lot of theories. You can't prove what you're saying," he said of Havas, noting the symptoms could be tied to other causes. "On the other hand, Safety Code 6 is not based on any stronger evidence than hers."

Wehrle noted he was not speaking on behalf of the school board.

Angela Klein is on the parent council at St. Vincent-Euphrasia Elementary School in Meaford. Her seven-year-old daughter attends the school.

Like so many others, Klein is on a hunt for answers. She believes Wi-Fi is causing health problems, but it hasn't been proven to her.

"But I also believe they can't prove to me it's not. And if we don't have an answer either way, it shouldn't be there," she said.

Initially, a group of Mountain View parents asked the Simcoe County board to turn off Wi-Fi access points at the school that it said were unnecessarily left on. One of the arguments was regarding the level of radiation being emitted. The board said the access points were to remain on so the Wi-Fi could be accessed in various parts of the school at various times.

"The board has already made its decision on this. Nothing that I've ever read has said a cellphone tower is less powerful than an access point," Dance said of arguments to the contrary. He also noted trustees recently reaffirmed their support for the strategic plan, including Wi-Fi usage.

The board's objective in introducing Wi-Fi in all schools, Dance said, was equity and accessibility.

"The reason why we went to wireless is because, through the ICT strategic plan… we found that we didn't have the availability to have computer labs for every student," he said.

With wireless, "the computers move as opposed to the students," Dance said.

Among the information distributed to those in attendance at last week's meeting were results from surveys conducted by the school board as part of its ICT plan.

Rodney Palmer, who represents the Simcoe Safe School Committee, and whose kids attend Mountain View, noted the answers to one question in particular stood out.

The board asked: "How would you like to see technology used in schools?" One option was "Wi-Fi in school/more Internet." Zero per cent of parents chose that option, while 11% of the board's central staff, 34% of school staff and 16% of students chose it.

Also, only 8% of central staff and 1% of school staff identified "lack of Wi-Fi in schools" as a concern. Zero per cent of central staff and 19% of school staff considered wireless connection a priority.

Havas commended those who showed up at the meeting for taking an interest in the matter, and she encouraged them to keep the heat on the board.

"If you organized yourselves, you could be a very powerful group, and I think that's what you need to do," she said.

Earlier this week, the Simcoe County District School Board posted to its website letters from both Education Minister Leona Dombrowsky and Nina Arron, director of public health protection and prevention with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, in which they state their support for the board's use of Wi-Fi.

Both refer to Safety Code 6, with Dombrowsky stating Health Canada and the World Health Organization "have the scientific, technical and public policy knowledge" to deem the technology safe.

Switching of the Brain

www.bevolution.org – free download of brainwave model This interview is in 0+13 parts. This interview is with the pioneer and doctor Manfred Doepp who approaches the subject from both the tradional medical background and from the holistic and future perspectives. Switching of the Brain is actually what the mobile phone radiation and the wireless society creates in the human brain. The health risks, facts and damages are already extreme in many ways but not many people are really aware about what happens in the brain when being exposed to EMF, EMR and mobile phone radiation cell phone radiation / mobile towers and masts. Switching of the brain is essential to understand when you wish to understand what is really going on and why it seems that many people are becoming more and more willingless zombies or living dead just consuming without pursuing any purpose in life. The term switching explains why people become caught in the prison of the mind.

Critic details flaws of cell phone safety study

http://pagingdrgupta.blogs.cnn.com/2010/06/15/critic-details-flaws-of-cell-phone-safety-study/?hpt=Mid

The longer you speak on the phone, the more risk you may have of getting tumors, some doctors say.

By Danielle Dellorto
CNN Medical Senior Producer

Critics are speaking out against the the controversial Interphone cell-phone safety study released last month.

U.S. researcher Lloyd Morgan presented a report in Seoul, South Korea this week, challenging Internphone's findings at the Bioelectromagnetics Society's annual meeting. Morgan's presentation is based on his re-evaluation of the Interphone study. He says it emphasizes several design flaws.

"The Interphone study is giving people false hope. Most people only hear the headline, Cell phones don't cause cancer' yet the devil is in the details," Morgan, Senior Research Fellow at the Environment Health Trust, said. ""When I read study papers, I look for what they are not saying – and this study isn't saying a lot."

According to Morgan, the bias of the participants in the study, the exclusion of data from children and young adults, the exclusion of people who died from brain tumors as well as a limit to the type of tumors studied are among the study's design flaws and are all reason to question the validity of the Interphone research.

Interphone's international study concluded cell phone usage doesn't increase the risk of brain tumors for the "average" person but also acknowledged that the study's findings were not definitive and called for more research.

Other scientists and researchers, like Lloyd Morgan, say the study's findings were not only misleading to the general public but also reference out-of-date data that doesn't correlate to the average cell-phone user today.

"The average study participant used his phone only 2-2.5 hours a month. In contrast, the typical person in the U.S. today uses his phone about 2.5 hours a week–about 4 times as much and will exceed the lifetime use of the typical Interphone study participant in less than a year," said University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health director, Dr. Joel Moskowitz.

For now, the potential health risks of cell phones usage remain unclear.

"I want to be clear that I don't believe all cell-phones need to be abandoned but consumers can't read headlines from studies like this and think they are completely safe," said Morgan. "I don't want people to wake up 10 years from now and say, 'Oh my god, why weren't we told.'"

FDA typically vague about cell phones and brain tumor research

Hard Sell

http://hsibaltimore.com/2010/06/09/cell-phone/

Great news! There is no evidence linking cell phone use to brain tumor risk.

What a relief!

But…uh oh…that great news comes from the same people who brought you "Vioxx is safe," and "Keep using Avandia."

Yep–the FDA

So if the FDA is assuring us that cell phones don't cause brain tumors, my response is: "Gulp!"

At face value, the FDA report is actually reassuring.

It's based on a series of international studies called Interphone, coordinated by the World Health Organization. According to WHO officials, Interphone is the largest study to examine cell use and brain cancer, and includes the largest number of users with at least 10 years of radiofrequency exposure from cell phones.

And here's the FDA's quick summary of the results: "The study reported little or no risk of brain tumors for most long-term users of cell phones."

Okay…wait a second. The FDA spin doctors titled their press release "No Evidence Linking Cell Phone Use to Risk of Brain Tumors." But then they say there's "little or no risk."

So, which is it? Little risk, or no risk? And "for most long-term users"? That sounds to me like people ARE at risk if they can't pry the cell away from their ear. And I know LOTS of people like that. I'll bet you do too.

The FDA does this sort of thing all the time. When it comes to delivering news that might be unpleasant for giant corporations (such as Pfizer, or Lilly, or (in this case) Sprint, or ATT) they're as vague as a schoolboy who doesn't want to show his mother a bad report card.

Brain dangers

A New York Times article covered the same study and revealed some VERY important points missing from the FDA version.

For starters, Interphone subjects who used cell phones the most had a 40 percent higher risk of giloma, the same type of brain tumor that Senator Kennedy died from. But in FDA World, this is not "evidence" because it doesn't prove that cell use caused the tumors.

That's a pretty thin slice of comfort. And the comfort disappears completely when you hear from those who worked on Interphone.

The Times reports that several Interphone researchers told Microwave News that giloma risk among long-term users was larger toward the end of the study.

And Elisabeth Cardis–leader of the Interphone project– said, "Overall, my opinion is that the results show a real effect."

Which is pretty much the EXACT OPPOSITE of the FDA press release title.

Hmmm…it's almost as if FDA officials WANTED to obscure the danger. Which would not be exactly shocking. After all, it is one of the things they do best.

One quick side note: The Times refers to the FDA as a "health group." As you can imagine, THAT had me laughing.

Drug industry shill–absolutely. Protector of the corporate status quo–without question. But a health group?

When flying pigs use cell phones.

To Your Good Health,

Jenny Thompson

Why vanishing snake colonies have 'large-scale implications' for humanity

Lesley Ciarula Taylor Staff Reporter Fri Jun 11 2010

http://www.thestar.com/news/world/article/822229--why-vanishing-snake-colonies-have-large-scale-implications-for-humanity?bn=1

The first documented evidence of the baffling disappearance of up to 90 per cent of snake colonies in five disparate spots on the globe has "large-scale implications" for humanity, a Canadian expert says.

And the "most obvious cause, intuitively, would be climate change," biologist Jason Head of the University of Toronto, told the Star.

"Snakes are top predators in their eco system," said Head. "They are regulators on rodents. If we remove that regulator, you can expect an increase in the number of disease vectoring (carrying) animals."

Venomous snakes are taking the biggest hit in the findings, which has serious consequences for medicine, said Head.

"Snakes are not an insignificant component of human society," he said. "There are large-scale implications" to the disappearance of some kinds of snakes, including the role of snake venom in medicine.

"You can draw your own conclusions."

A recently published study in the journalBiology Letters involving painstaking research in England, Nigeria, Australia, Italy and France discovered eight species in 17 snake populations in those widely different climates that had "declined drastically," said Dr. Christopher Reading, lead researcher for the study.

"In some of the populations, the decline was 70 to 90 per cent,"

Reading of the Center for Ecology & Hydrology in Wallingford, England, told the Star.

"This is the first documented evidence that some snake populations have declined. And the fact that it happened at all of the same time, irrespective of geography, indicates there is something at a higher level behind it."

Snakes are "quite difficult animals to work with," Reading explained. His team used a tag similar to the microchip that veterinarians use on dogs or cats, while the Italian researchers tracked their snakes with a permanent mark on their belly scales.

In all, 11 species were followed from as far back as the 1980s through 2005. In the late 1990s, certain species started vanishing.

In particular, the "fairly sedentary" snakes that use an "ambush foraging technique" disappeared in greater numbers compared with the "wide-ranging, active foragers," said Reading. And those most sedentary snakes tended to be the venomous ones.

"The scale and precision of this study" impressed Head. And while researchers were careful not to pin the mysterious decline on any one cause, the vastly different geologies of the regions, from tropical to temperate, suggested "one ultimate driving mechanism," with climate change the clearest culprit, he said.

"It's alarming, to be honest," Head said. "This is a compelling analysis that is certainly going to get a lot of people looking at the diversity of the species."

The next stage of study, Reading said, would be to track more snake colonies and more species in more parts of the world, including North America.

"It's possible what we have found is an aberration. But I suspect it is much more widespread."

Reading makes it clear the discovery is only the first stage.

"The whole reason for this paper was to say, 'Look, this is what we've found. We are quite alarmed by it. We don't know what the causes are, but we are flagging it so that herpetologists around the world will look at it."

Note - Poorly designed electrical systems allow considerable amounts of electricity to travel across the land in much of North America (stray voltage).  That electricity can carry very dangerous high frequency electrical pollution.  It would not be surprising to discover that snakes are being harmed by this pollution.

Strokes on the rise in youths

Obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure are among the reasons

March 02, 2010

http://www.thespec.com/go/healthfitness/article/730927

Blythe Bernhard
McClatchy-Tribune Information Services
ST. LOUIS (Mar 2, 2010)

Of all the things parents worry about happening to their children, strokes usually aren't one of them.

That's why Christina Lovett of Mattoon, Ill., and the family pediatrician thought her 10-year-old son, Josh, had the flu when he was vomiting and complaining of a severe headache in late January.

Five days later, Josh was having trouble walking. Brain scans revealed a series of strokes.

"I'm thinking all this time 'it's a virus,'" Lovett said last week in the therapy gym at St. Louis Children's Hospital, where Josh is recovering. "I thought (strokes) were just in adults."

Advanced age is still the most common risk factor for stroke, which occurs when the brain doesn't get enough oxygen because a blood vessel is blocked or ruptured. But doctors here and elsewhere report seeing younger stroke patients.

The average age of stroke patients -- 68 -- declined by three years between 1995 and 2005.

More than 7 per cent of all first-time stroke patients are now younger than 45, according to data presented last week at the International Stroke Conference in San Antonio, Texas.

The rate of strokes among people in their 20s, 30s and 40s has nearly doubled in recent years. The exact cause of the increase is unknown, but doctors speculate that rises in obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure could be to blame.

"This is just the beginning of this alarming trend," said Dr. Jin Moo Lee, director of the stroke section of neurology at Washington University.

"Normally it takes on the order of decades for diabetes to wreak havoc on the blood vessels."

There isn't any evidence of a similar increase in pediatric strokes, which are rare and usually have different causes, such as congenital heart defects or drug reactions.

About 9,000 children have strokes each year, according to the pediatric stroke program at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

"Strokes in the pediatric population are as common as pediatric brain tumours," said Dr. Michael Noetzel, chief neurologist at St. Louis Children's Hospital.

Warning signs of a stroke can include loss of balance, severe headache, difficulty with speech, vision problems, dizziness and sudden weakness or numbness in the face, arms or legs, usually on one side of the body.

Because strokes have not commonly been considered a pediatric issue, and the symptoms can mimic other disorders such as seizures, there are often delays in diagnosis and treatment.

Children also have a more difficult time describing their symptoms, which can be subtle.

Kids like Josh Lovett bounce back from strokes more quickly and fully than adults, said Noetzel.

On the other hand, it's difficult to tell in a 10-year-old the skills such as problem-solving and organization that may be compromised in adulthood.

Children "are in some ways more vulnerable to long-term issues," said Noetzel.

Row brewing over mobile base station in Brownstown

http://www.leinsterleader.ie/news/Row-brewing-over-mobile-base.6139107.jp

Published Date: 10 March 2010

By Paula Campbell

A CANCER patient who barricaded a mobile phone company from entering an alleyway behind his house held out for four days until a hospital appointment made him leave his post.

Brendan McConville, from 1 Duff Tce in Brownstown on the Curragh, began his protest last Monday against the installation of a new base station near his home. The station is to improve Meteor coverage in the Brownstown area.

Brendan, who is fighting non-hodgkin lymphoma, went directly from his appointment with Naas General Hospital last Thursday straight to Kildare County Council to deliver a petiton with 140 signatures in support of his protest.

"I blocked off the entrance last Monday," explained Brendan. "I put a sign up nearby saying 'dispute on here against the erection of a telephone/radio mast'. We began the barricade at the weekend when my sister, Dorothy Brennan, stopped the workmen by putting a van to block the alleyway. The workmen told her that they were putting up a telephone mast and the foundations look like it will take something big."

According to Brendan he lives three doors down from the location of the foundations for the new base station behind number 4 Duff Tce.

"I have no choice," he said. "I live three doors down and I had planned to stay put and guard the place. I have non-hodgkin lymphoma and I don't want this near my back yard. I wouldn't be doing this for no reason but I have to take a stand."

Brendan gathered a number of fellow protestors to march last Saturday to help raise the profile of his protest, which was attended by Jack Wall TD. Work had begun on the site but, according to Kildare County Council spokesman Charlie Talbot, work has since stopped on KCC's request pending an investigation of the development.

"I might be fighting a losing battle," Brendan added. "But we were not informed of this change and there was no planning notice put up. When I came back from hospital after handing in my petition to Kildare County Council, the Meteor workers got in, but they did not stay long."

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Meteor, Rebekah O'Neill, confirmed that the mobile phone company is currently installing a new site/base station to improve Meteor coverage in the Brownstown area on land owned by Kevin Cooke, who is also the proprietor of the Rising Sun public house.

"There are no existing mobile masts in the area," she explained. "Therefore we are swapping out the existing roof-mounted mast on the Rising Sun pub and replacing the mast with a new structure carrying Meteor equipment."

According to Meteor as this development is "exempted development" it does not require planning permission.

"The height of the new structure will not exceed the height of the replaced structure and shall not be more than twice the width of the replaced structure," she added. "Our equipment will operate within international exposure limits developed by the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) and the European Commission. Meteor's mobile network operates at the lowest power level in order to provide a sufficient service to customers. Public exposure to outputs from antennas is thousands of times below the ICNIRP recommendations. All base stations are built to limit public access to the equipment. Meteor also carries out emissions tests on their sites on a continual basis to confirm compliance with ICNIRP standards. If reasonably requested Meteor representatives will meet with members of local communities to discuss the citing of base stations and any concerns they may have. Meteor's site acquisition representative has advised Mr Cooke of this."

Mr Cooke was unavailale for comment at the time of going to press.

Cell Phone Transmission Towers and Ill Health Effects

Manassas Environmental News Examiner

This week, Dominion Virginia Power dropped a request to the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) to install "smart meters" at all of its customers' homes in Northern Virginia by 2013.

The utility originally filed its Integrated Resource Plan with the SCC last July. After allowing time for public comments, the SCC had planned to hold a hearing February 16, 2010, on whether to allow Dominion to proceed with the plan. However, last Friday, Dominion filed an amended plan that did not include the smart meter project.

In the original plan, Dominion had requested rate increases that would cover the cost of installing the meters. A major part of the plan, called the Voltage Conservation Program, would have used advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) technology, commonly known as smart meter technology.

Smart meters would save energy

This program would have required installing the two-way digital meters in the homes of all of its approximately 2.4 million customers. The meters would allow the company to lower voltage on its distribution circuits by 5 percent during non-peak hours, saving energy for the company, while at the same time saving money for consumers without affecting electric service.

Other parts of the plan that will go forward include a residential air conditioner cycling program, a residential low-income program, a residential lighting program, residential Energy Star® new homes program, residential heat pump tune-up program, residential refrigerator turn-in program, and a residential heat pump upgrade program

According to the plan, the voltage conservation program using smart meters would have accounted for approximately 75 percent of the energy savings of the plan. The voltage reduction program would have been implemented automatically by the company as the smart meters were installed.

Smart meters are small computers that replace standard electricity meters. Because they can transmit information from the utility to the home and back, smart meters avoid the need to be read by utility personnel or radio-based broadcasting to nearby trucks. They would also allow the utility to remotely switch appliances and air conditioners off for short periods, in order to prevent overloads

Utilities across the country are testing and installing smart meters, which they hope will help them meet stricter energy efficiency guidelines required by new laws. For instance, the Energy Plan, set in September 2007, includes a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions statewide back to 2000 levels by 2025. In general, these regulations are a response to the threat of catastrophic climate change, although the science behind the theory is increasingly coming under question

Questioning smart meters

According to a report in the Intelligent Utility Daily, the attorney general's office and the SCC staff "both supported the withdrawal of the 'advanced metering infrastructure' aspect of Dominion's conservation plan, having previously questioned the effectiveness of the technology and its high cost

In addition to the cost, one problem is customer acceptance of the meters, which some see as intruding on their privacy, or as leaving their home energy systems open to attacks from hackers.

An even bigger concern is that smart meters would allow utilities to charge more for electricity during high-demand hours, generally in the afternoons. The result could be devastatingly high energy bills for those who stay home during the day, including the elderly, the ill, the unemployed, the self-employed, and families with young children

More field testing before full rollout

According to David Botkins, Dominion's media relations director, the company has recognized and is responding to concerns about smart meter technology. "The bottom line is we are not backing off our commitment and belief in smart grid technology, but we are…slowing down and doing more [field testing of]… the various attributes of the technology," he said in an email on Friday

The utility said that instead of the full rollout, it will expand its smart meter testing in Northern Virginia by another 30,000 customers

Dominion just ended a pilot critical peak pricing program in Dec. 2009, in which a group of customers were charged higher rates for electricity used during critical peak demand hours, and which allowed the utility to remotely adjust or reduce the consumer's use during that time.  The company is also carrying out large-scale smart meter projects in  Midlothian, Virginia.

Dominion's Botkins said that the additional test in Northern Virginia would allow the company to add "an urban setting to go with the mountainous setting of Charlottesville, and the suburban setting of Midlothian." The smart meter programs in Charlottesville and Midlothian will not be affected by the announcement.

-------------------------------------

Those of you in Virginia may want to contact your attorney general with information about the health risk posed by the rollout so that appropriate studies are implemented in the study areas. The article does not suggest that health was a factor in this decision, now would be a good time to raise that issue. If you wait until installation is happening state-wide, it will be much harder to stop.

Please see www.electricalpollution.com  for more information about the risks of transmitting utility meters. General information on the health risks posed by radiofrequency radiation can be found there.

Please pass this on to those you know in Virginia.

Cell tower fight moves to court

Candlewood residents' suit highlights safety questions

By Prentiss Findlay

MOUNT PLEASANT -- Candlewood subdivision residents opposed to a 195-foot-tall cell phone tower on Whipple Road have taken their fight to court.

photo

Residents of the of Candlewood subdivision in Mount Pleasant have asked a judge to reverse a board ruling in December upholding a town permit for a 195-foot-tall cell phone tower on Whipple Road.

The residents' suit is against the town, the Board of Zoning Appeals and SCANA. It asks a judge to reverse a board ruling in December upholding a town permit for the SCANA-built tower. And it raises a number of town zoning code issues that relate to placement of telecommunications towers such as health, safety and aesthetics.

"The tower applicant (SCANA) failed to show evidence that the tower will not endanger the health and safety of the residents," according to a copy of the suit.

"The record will show that one child who lives next to the tower has a pacemaker and his parents were advised that the child should not play in his neighbor's backyard," the suit states. "Another resident in the immediate area testified that she was a former cancer patient and that she has read and cited several reliable studies that indicate that such towers emit high radiation levels and electromagnetic field levels."

SCANA asks in court papers filed in March that the Candlewood homeowners suit be dismissed. It says that federal law prohibits state and local agencies, including zoning boards, from regulating telecommunications towers based on concerns about environmental effects of radio frequency emissions as long as the towers comply with Federal Communications Commission regulations.

Homeowners Mark Bevivino and Alan Lincoln filed separate appeals of Zoning Administrator Kent Prause's decision to allow the tower, which was upheld in a 4-2 vote in December by the Board of Zoning Appeals. Bevivino and Lincoln declined comment on the suit on Wednesday, and referred questions to Melinda Lucka, the lawyer representing those who filed suit. Six other Candlewood residents have joined in the suit.

The $250,000 SCANA tower was built in October.

"We're not inclined to talk about it until everything goes through court," said Patricia Freshwater, public affairs manager for South Carolina Electric & Gas. SCANA Corp. is SCE&G's parent company.

Attorneys for the town did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

The town staff is in the process of reviewing its regulations concerning wireless communication towers, and plans to make recommendations on the issue to Town Council.

Lucka said she will write a letter on behalf of the Candlewood Neighborhood Association suggesting that the town strengthen its regulations governing the towers. Of particular interest are issues such as whether wireless technology could be located on an existing tower rather than a new tower. Review of such applications at the board level rather than staff approval also is of concern. Charleston County has a stronger review process for telecommunications towers, she said.

"We hope that in the future utility applicants will have to go through a more rigorous application process than what exists now in Mount Pleasant," she said.

Plan for cell tower near Gilbert elementary school riles parents

by Parker Leavitt - Apr. 8, 2010 09:01 AM
The Arizona Republic

http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2010/04/08/20100408cell-tower-near-gilbert-school.html

A technology company's plan to build a cellular tower at a Gilbert elementary school triggered an emotional response from concerned parents at Wednesday's Planning Commission meeting.

Six local parents spoke out against Clearwire's request for a permit to build a wireless cell tower at Val Vista Lakes Elementary School. The parents said they were concerned about the effects radiation from the tower could have on the health and safety of the students.

"I'm very surprised by this, that this is even happening," said Chris Handorf, whose 8-year-old child attends the school.

Fighting back tears, Handorf said while working as an engineer at Motorola, he read internal e-mails and memos about the potentially dangerous effects of electro-magnetic radiation.

"I don't let my son near my cell phone," he said. "I don't want wireless in my home."

But the 65-foot tower, disguised as a faux palm tree, would be right on school grounds, just a few yards away from school buildings where students spend several hours each day.

A Clearwire respresentative said the tower, used to provide wireless internet coverage to cell phone customers, would emit up to five amps. By the time any radiation reached the ground, it would be less intense then that of a microwave, he said.

But residents countered that students' close proximity and prolonged exposure to the electromagnetic waves is indeed cause for concern.

"If you build this tower, you're going to unleash a very silent, dangerous predator on the grounds of that school," said Geoff Feltham, who said he used to work as an electrical engineer.

"I just feel that you've got to take a stand here, not for technology but for the future of our children," he added.

Clearwire has already negotiated a lease with Gilbert Public Schools to build the tower on school grounds.

Other schools in Gilbert have already been leasing land to wireless companies for similar towers, Commissioner Jennifer Whittmann noted.

The Planning Commission unanimously voted to delay the permit for at least a month and advised Clearwire, the school district and the parents to discuss the issue in a formal meeting.

The groups plan to meet at 6 p.m., April 28 at Val Vista Lakes Elementary School.

Clearwire's request for the permit will likely come back to the Planning Commission at its May 5 meeting.

Hi All

This information about 'dirty' electricity affecting diabetes is very important.

Please pass the information on to diabetics, doctors, nurses, hospital boards and local health authorities.

Diabetes and electrosmog

I made a short youtube video (7 min.) on diabetes and electrosmog (dirty electricity), based on the paper that I wrote for Electromagnetic Biology and Medicine 2008 (see abstract below).

Please pass this on to those who are diabetic or to doctors who are treating diabetics.

Dirty Electricity Elevates Blood Sugar Among Electrically Sensitive Diabetics and May Explain Brittle Diabetes

Transient electromagnetic fields (dirty electricity), in the kilohertz range on electrical wiring, may be contributing to elevated blood sugar levels among diabetics and prediabetics.

By closely following plasma glucose levels in four Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics, we find that they responded directly to the amount of dirty electricity in their environment. In an electromagnetically clean environment, Type 1 diabetics require less insulin and Type 2 diabetics have lower levels of plasma glucose. Dirty electricity, generated by electronic equipment and wireless devices, is ubiquitous in the environment. Exercise on a treadmill, which produces dirty electricity, increases plasma glucose.

These findings may explain why brittle diabetics have difficulty regulating blood sugar. Based on estimates of people who suffer from symptoms of electrical hypersensitivity (3–35%), as many as 5–60 million diabetics worldwide may be affected. Exposure to electromagnetic pollution in its various forms may account for higher plasma glucose levels and may contribute to the misdiagnosis of diabetes.

Reducing exposure to electromagnetic pollution by avoidance or with specially designed GS filters may enable some diabetics to better regulate their blood sugar with less medication and borderline or pre-diabetics to remain non diabetic longer.

Please, find enclosed part II of Phil Dobbie's  radio program "Twisted Wire",

"Is your mobile phone killing you":

http://www.zdnet.com.au/are-mobile-phones-killing-our-grandchildren-339301883.htm

"On last week's program we asked whether exposure to your mobile phone is increasing your risk of contracting cancer or having a brain tumour. The jury is out on that question, with the scientific community divided and no conclusive proof either way. Yet no proof has been translated as "no risk" in many quarters.

The Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA) admitted its terminology was misleading and corrected the wording on its website after last week's program.

AMTA has re-worded its website from saying there was "no public health risk" to now say "there is no established evidence of health effects".

This week we hear again from Lloyd Morgan, the retired electronics engineer, who has questioned the methods used by the multinational Interphone study, including selection bias, insufficient latency time, and the exclusion of children and young adults. In fact, some people were excluded from the study because they had a brain tumour and were too ill to be interviewed!

In Cellphones and Brain Tumors: 15 Reasons for Concern, he points to Interphone research that shows that using a mobile phone actually protects you from a brain tumour.

Does that sound like a credible finding?

We also hear more from Olle Johansson, an associate professor at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. You'll recall that in last week's program he said that cancer and brain tumour might be the least of our worries. There could be other effects that are far more detrimental. The way he argues the case you have to seriously wonder whether he has a point.

Have a listen and tell us what you think. Are we blindly leading ourselves into the unknown?"

Hi All

This article linked below, is an interesting time waster and potential killer, from the World Health Organization.

They admit that the cause of most childhood cancer is 75% to 90% unknown yet fail to mention the cancer suffered by children living near to cell phone antennas and those going to school near to antennas.

Even though the health effects of microwave radiation are well known, extremely serious and numerous, there is no advice for children to avoid microwave radiation exposure.

How can a world organization, meant to protect us, be so incompetent?

--- www.westsanpedro.org  --- The PROTEST of T-Mobile 6 antenna cell tower at Taper Ave and Westmont in San Pedro. This cell tower is only 40ft away from Taper Ave School. The PROTEST against T-Mobile on Sunday 11-22-09 went very well! We had 110 people by 12 noon. Mrs. Vladovic was there along with staff from Dr. Vladovic's office as well as the presidents of the Homeowners Associations and the Northwest Neighborhood Council. Lots of parents and quite a few seniors. We had previously notified the Harbor LAPD watch commander and even they, (squad cars), cruised by and good-naturedly showed their support. Reporters from Channel 5 News and the LA Times were there, as well as a reporter from an Orange County newspaper. We had LOTS of support from cars passing by honking their horns.

--- www.westsanpedro.org --- Los Angeles Unified School District School Board on 12-08-2009 approves Dr. Richard Vladovic's motion in condemnation of T-Mobiles construction of a cell phone tower adjacent to Taper Avenue Elementary School. This motion urges T-Mobile to remove the cell phone tower to avoid serious damage to it's brand in the District and the community at large.

T-Mobile is a German owned company. In Germany they could not have put up a cell tower so close to a school, but they seem to have no problem doing so right here in San Pedro!

A cellular tower caught fire in Wellesley, MA. I happened to be driving by, and was at a red light, so I went to take a video clip of it burning, when I caught it falling over.

The horns you hear are several cars in front of me, not behind me. The person at the light was too interested in seeing the tower fall and didn't notice the light turn green, lol. That was good though, 'cause it let me take the video without moving for most of it.

(You have to wonder whether the antennas were operating much higher radiation levels than they should?)
