Mobile phone link to kids' bad behaviour revealed in Danish study of mothers

From: AFP

December 07, 2010

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/world/mobile-phone-link-to-kids-bad-behaviour-revealed-in-danish-study-of-mothers/story-e6frg6so-1225967040572

PREGNANT mothers who regularly used mobile phones were more likely to have children with behavioural problems, according to a new study in Denmark.

The risk was higher when the kids themselves began using mobile phones at a very early age, researchers reported in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.

Leeka Kheifets of the University of California at Los Angeles and colleagues examined the health records of 28,000 seven-year-olds and their mothers enrolled in the Danish National Birth Cohort.

The survey, which included nearly 100,000 women between 1996 and 2002, was designed to track the long-term health of the children.

Mothers supplied detailed information about their lifestyles, diet and habits during and after pregnancy, including mobile phone use.

When their kids reached the age of seven, mothers were again quizzed on their own and their children's health and behaviour.

The researchers found that kids who had been exposed to mobile phones both before and after birth were 50 per cent more likely to have behavioural problems.

The findings held true even after factors that might have skewed the outcome were taken into account, they said.

Kids exposed to mobile phones only while in the womb were 40 per cent more likely to show abnormal behaviour, with the percentage dropping to a fifth for children whose first access to the devices occurred after they were born.

The results mirror an earlier study by the researchers of 13,000 other mothers and their kids enrolled in the same national survey.

In both groups, about three per cent of the children were found to exhibit abnormal behaviour, with another three per cent borderline.

The author cautioned against drawing a straight line between mobile phones and difficult children, but said the findings were troublesome.

"Although it is premature to interpret these results as causal, we are concerned that early exposure to mobile phones could carry a risk which, if real, would be a public health concern given the widespread use of the technology," they concluded.

CNESET (Israel Parliament) environmental and health committee recommends EMF reduction

An article about reduction and prevention of exposure of students to EMR was published today on Israeli Internet newspaper.

The environmental and health committee in the CNESET (Israel parliament) called the government to adopt the recommendations of a technical committee to reduce and to prevent exposure to electromagnetic radiation of students in schools to, due to the possible health effect of electromagnetic radiation might have on their health.

An automatically Hebrew to English translated (google translate) can be found on the following link:

http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&sl=iw&tl=en&u=http://www.ynet.co.il/articles/0,7340,L-3988033,00.html

I did my best to summarize the article:
The electromagnetic radiation sources that were addressed are:

· Mobile Phones

· Wireless computer network systems, WLAN, WIFI

· Laptops

· Power lines

· Electrical power transformers

· Electrical cabinets

· Additional sources.

The Recommendations:

· Compose a habit changing educational plan that will explain about Electromagnetic radiation, and about the possible related health risk. The plan will also cover tools and means to reduce the exposure to EMR like the right way to use mobile phones, reduction of the usage, limiting the number and length of calls, using a wired earpiece, sending SMS rather than talking and will discuss also the usage of cellphones while driving, using cellphone before going to sleep and additional aspects.

· Schools should Place of wired landline telephones for students to use.

· Consider establishment of special areas in schools in which mobile phone can be used and limiting the use of mobile phone elsewhere (similar to smoking areas).

· Ensuring that teachers will use cell phones only in the staff room or areas that will be allocate.

· The Ministry of Transport will ban cell phone use for young drivers and public transportation drivers (because of the serious impact on driving even when using headsets or handfree kits).

· Wired computer network in schools will be preferred over wireless networks.

· Reduce and limit students' exposure to radiation sources from the electricity network.

· Radiation tests will be mandatory at the end of construction or maintenance work done on the electricity network and infrastructure in schools.

· The Ministry of Environment Protection will present a schedule for radiation tests in all schools and educational institutions to be completed within one year.

· The Ministry of Education will map all the classrooms and schools to find classrooms that are located near or next to a possible electrical radiation source and will deliver this info to the Ministry of Environment Protection who will use it to priorities these classes to be tested first (for radiation).

· Radiation Hazards found in schools will be reported to the construction department in the Ministry of Education.

· The report will include a description of the hazard, methods of treatment and repair.

· The construction department in the Ministry of Education will be responsible to deal with the problems found, including in some cases evacuation of students from problematic classrooms, and reporting the problems to the Israeli eclectic company and to the school in question so they will fix the problems.

· After fixing the problem the Ministry of Environment Protection may make a second test.

I hope that the government will soon adopt these recommendations.

All the best.

Frequencies of Humans and Living Things

Safety Code 6 talks about nerve and muscle depolarization.

I was a witness for the Standing Committee on Health and reported an oversight in Safety Code 6. It is important and critical information to understand that the definition of oversight is an omission or mistake, esp one made through failure to notice something.

It doesn't matter that it was unintentional, Safety Code 6 is missing critical data as a result of the omission and as a result Safety Code 6 substantiates why Wi Fi should be removed immediately. Other radio frequencies are also causing problems and are illegal because of the omission.

The omission or error is not giving humans or ecosytems a frequency. (as electrical beings)

Here is a link to my blog where it has the letter submitted to Health Canada, Environment Commissioner and the Committee as record. Health Canada can't say there isn't peer reviewed science anymore, electricity and frequencies interactions are taught in every school as standards in education. The wireless industry missed the oversight and would come to the same conclusions as I have, it is an electrical frequency conflict. As Page 9 in Safety Code 6 says, we want to avoid the unintentional stimulation of tissue as experimental studies have shown there to be nerve and muscle depolarization. Nerve and muscle depolarization is medical language medicine understands instead of EHS.

http://www.thermoguy.com/blog/index.php?itemid=47

When you are dealing with school boards or others and they mention the nonsense there is no peer reviewed science, refer to them the omission(oversight) that Health Canada can substantiate.

Paragraph from Safety code 6:

For frequencies from 3 to 100 kHz, the predominant health effect to be avoided is the unintentional stimulation of excitable tissues, since the threshold for electrostimulation in this frequency range will typically be lower than that for the onset of thermal effects. Experimental studies have demonstrated that exogenous electric and magnetic field exposures can induce in situ electric fields and currents within biological tissue that can lead to nerve and muscle depolarization(5, 8–9, 31–32). Limits for maximum external electric and magnetic field strengths have been established in Safety Code 6 to avoid in situ electric field strengths greater than that of the minimum excitation threshold for excitable tissues.

Physiology

Effect of the electrical polarization of motor nerve endings and their ability to conduct rhythmic impulses

I. A. Vladimirova

http://www.springerlink.com/content/j80465515qj40883/abstract/?target=print

Abstract

A study was made of the effect produced by electric polarization of the motor nerve endings on the conduction of the rhythmic impulses through them. Increased rhythmic end-plate potentials from the hyperpolarized endings were subject to a lesser summation than in normal conditions and weakened more rapidly following prolonged rhythmic stimulation. Hyperpolarization of the nerve endings removed the presynaptic block caused by an increased potassium content in the solution surrounding the muscle. Depolarization of the nerve endings promoted the development of presynaptic blocking. These changes were observed only in local polarization of synaptic plates. A hypothesis is put forward on the nature of the changes occurring in the presynaptic endings, leading to the changes of efficacy of their transsynaptic action and to presynaptic blocking.

Ramara man's bill higher with smart meter

http://www.orilliapacket.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=2770869

Simcoe North MPP hopes to suspend program

By NATHAN TAYLOR THE PACKET & TIMES
( OCTOBER 2010 )

When Ramara Township resident Frank Mangan got his first hydro bill this week since being connected to a smart meter, he was somewhat confused.

Smart meters charge users different rates depending on when they use the electricity. The three different rates are peak time, shoulder time and off-peak hours. Using electricity out of peak time should cost less.

But Mangan said only 17% of his usage was during peak time, yet he was charged about 3% more than what he would have paid on the previous system.

He couldn't comprehend why the government is "spending that kind of money (on smart meters) and charging us more when we're using little power in peak time."

"The rates were supposed to go down," he said.

Smart meters allow consumers to monitor their usage and manage their consumption, said Sylvia Kovesfalvi, a spokesperson with the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure.

She acknowledged the cost of electricity is increasing, but noted the province is responding to that reality.

"We are modernizing our electricity system and making new investments in the system, and that is putting some pressure on the cost of electricity," she said.

The government has taken a few measures to respond, including support for low-income consumers, industrial consumers and those in northern Ontario.

"The ministry is looking at options to ensure that a time-of-use pricing structure is in place that balances the benefits for both the consumer and the electricity system as a whole," Kovesfalvi said.

But it will take more than focused supports and rewards for consumers who conserve to get opposition politicians to call off the dogs.

Premier Dalton McGuinty faced questions Thursday in the legislature from members whose constituents had pricy hydro bills.

McGuinty said his Liberals inherited a system that had been neglected by previous governments.

Passing the buck isn't helping struggling consumers, Simcoe North MPP Garfield Dunlop told The Packet & Times on Thursday.

"There was a lot of money spent with Hydro one with all of the governments. This is McGuinty trying to get out of this disaster he's got. He can condemn all the previous governments he wants, but, as far as I'm concerned, hydro has never been in the mess it's in today," Dunlop said. "One of the biggest factors that will bring the McGuinty government down in the next election is the hydro issue."

Concerns about smart meters have been aired often since the legislature resumed, he noted, adding the meters "are not meeting the criteria of Measurement Canada."

"They aren't accurate enough," Dunlop said.

Hydro One states its meters conform to Measurement Canada guidelines.

Kovesfalvi said the government's conservation efforts, including smart meters, will not offset all pricing increases, "but they do give families an opportunity, a tool, to mitigate some of these costs."

In a recent press release, Dunlop referred to the program as "Dalton McGuinty's latest tax machine" and said he received numerous complaints from his constituents.

Dunlop said an opposition-day motion will be introduced Tuesday. It will ask the government to suspend the smart-meter program until the kinks are worked out of it and also to give people the choice to use the new system or the old one.

To date, more than four million smart meters have been installed in the province.

All of Orillia will be charged for electricity on a time-of-use basis by spring, said John Mattinson, president of the Orillia Power Corporation (OPC).

Nearly all of the 11,000-plus residential smart meters have been installed, and 496 small commercial meters, more than 35%, are installed, Mattinson said.

"They are going to have an opportunity to save money... if you try to use some of the heavy-usage appliances in the off-peak," he said. "It doesn't mean you have to do your laundry in the middle of the night. You can do it on a Saturday or Sunday."

The purpose of the sliding-scale charges is to shift the peak time, Mattinson said.

"If you've got everybody drawing electricity at the same time, it puts tremendous stress on our generating stations, on our transmissions system, on our distribution system," he said. "Whereas if you can spread that same amount of energy over the 24-hour period, it is a much more efficient use of the resources."

The smart meters, which send information to energy suppliers through radio waves, provide more information than could previously be gathered, making the system more "reliable," Mattinson said.

"Once they are fully implemented, we are going to know when somebody is out of power as opposed to waiting for someone to phone in. We will know immediately and we will also know when customers are restored," he said. "We're going to know when have an area with low voltage."

Before the new fees come into effect in the spring, OPC will launch a website where individual customers can look at how they're consuming power.

"People are going to see what they are using and the impact of that usage," Mattinson said. "For example, if they shifted their (laundry) load or shifted their usage patterns to the off-peak times, they would see how many dollars it would actually save them."

Hydro One, which has 1.3 million customers in the province, has installed all of its meters and a tenth have been switched to time-of-use rates, said spokesperson Daniele Gauvin.

"Time-of-use rates are intended to encourage consumers to shift some of their electricity use to non-peak demand times, such as the weekend, thereby reducing strain on the electricity system helping Ontario move off-coal and avoid building costly new generation," she said.

Rome capital  / Electromagnetic Roma Capitale ...

ROME / 11.18.2010

Environmental pollution electro, breaking news, Rome - The Association of Chronic Diseases poisoning and / or environmental (AMICA), an association based in Rome working at European level to the lower limits of exposure to electromagnetic fields, and the Coordination of Committees Romans Electrosmog warn against electromagnetic pollution in the capital.

A concern is the news today of yet another point Wi-Fi installation of the Province of Rome on Ponte Milvio, a meeting place for young couples who want to promise eternal love. "We can not accept that the province will continue to promote Wi-Fi among citizens, especially among young people, arguing that wireless Internet use does not involve any health risk because this is not the reality of scientific studies," said Dr. Francesca Romana Orlando, Vice President of FRIENDS. "Scientists at the highest level, even in Italy, are discovering that the electromagnetic field emitted by these technologies of wireless communication significantly interfere with the proper functioning of cells even below the current exposure limits prescribed by law, the precautionary principle requires that discourage the widespread use of these technologies. "

"Increasingly, moreover, we are contacted by people who are starting to feel bad since it was installed near their home Wi-Fi antenna or a repeater of mobile phones," added Dr Orlando. The EHS is a condition increasing in industrialized countries and results in pseudo-allergic reactions to electromagnetic fields with symptoms ranging from insomnia symptoms in the skin and mucous membranes (such as itching, pain, warmth, redness, papules and pustules, etc..), headache, tachycardia and cardiac abnormalities, tinnitus, etc.. In some countries, like Sweden and the United States is recognized as functional disability.

The Coordination of Committees against the Romans and Electrosmog FRIEND for months they are asking the Province a policy of caution on the Wi-Fi. They recently also risollecitato the Council to pronounce on the draft resolution to the popular initiative, in June 2005 that he had collected over 23,000 signatures for approval of a real Plan of antennas and a set of regulations for telecommunications technologies.

"In Rome, the pollution emitted by Wi-Fi joins old problem of mobile phone masts, which sees more than 3,000 antennas to offend the skyline of the capital, as defined by the UNESCO World Heritage Site - said today, Dr. . Jose Theodore of the National Coordinating Committees of the Romans against the Electrosmog - It 's the only city in Europe that has this sad record and could be labeled as' the biggest trash electromagnetic Union', thanks to the inertia of successive mayors in recent years that have failed to regulate the proliferation of these wild plants. " "The Admiral. Comunale it is defaulting to 1800 days, because the statute requires the plenary debate within 6 months from the filing of the Draft Resolution of popular initiative," added Dr. Teodoro. "In Rome they never implemented policies carefully to subtract the population to the risks attributable to excessive exposure to electromagnetic fields and this irresponsible myopia has produced and is producing serious damage to the community of citizens, as evidenced by the increase of diseases and leukemia cancer recorded in recent years on urban area. "

"As stated recently in Rome prof. Olle Johansson Karolinksa Institute in Stockholm at a conference organized by our association on environmental diseases in the House of Representatives, we are all subject to a huge scientific experiment not authorized and even the media should be better informed the public about risks health related to the use of these technologies and the social costs that soon we will have to support for the irresponsible choices of today. "concluded Dr Orlando.

Italy - Increase of childhood cancers

http://salute.agi.it/primapagina/notizie/201009281319-att-rsa1024-tumori_pediatri_aumentano_quelli_infantili_smog_sotto_accusa

(AGI) - Rome, September 28 - Not only allergies and respiratory diseases, but also increase in leukemia and cancer, especially in the first year of life, and neuro-psychological disorders have as their prime suspect in the environment and particularly the changes undergone by the fetus in utero. The Societa 'Italian Pediatrics takes the field with a series of environmental initiatives, also in view of the National Congress, scheduled for October 20 to 23 in Rome, where European and national experts will discuss this issue, including Ernesto Burgio, Coordinator of the Scientific Committee of ISDE (International Society of Doctors for Environment) and Dominique Belpomme President ARTAC (Association de Recherche Therapeutique Anti-Cancereuse).

The data does not leave many doubts in the last 20 years in Europe and 'recorded an increase of 1, 2% annually of childhood cancer, this rate in Italy and' equal to 2%, nearly double that of the United States and rest of Europe. The highest increase 'has consistently among children under one year of age' (+ 3.2%) and some cancers (lymphomas: + 4.6%, central nervous system tumors: + 2.0%); and 'therefore likely to contribute to tumorigenesis or gamete maternal exposure to toxic substances. It's not 'more' comforting chapter of neuro-psychological. That the diffusion of molecules in a camouflage, heavy metals and other pollutants can interfere heavily on the development of neuro-endocrine embryo, fetal and child risk of producing severe damage and 'a figure that emerges from hundreds of scientific studies. So much so that a few years ago a study published in the Lancet, signed by two prestigious researchers from Harvard School of Health Pubblic raised forcefully the issue of "silent pandemic" of neuro-psychological damage that would be more widespread indifference, now affecting 10% of children.

"Our country, in all its aspects, politics, pediatricians, schools, families, must become more 'aware of environmental risks to the health of children," said Alberto Ugazio, President of the Societa' of Italian Pediatrics. "Soon we will start training courses throughout the country turned to pediatricians for the advancement of pediatric diseases linked to the environment, but we think it important to act on education from a very 'young age': ask the Minister Gelmini to introduce sin from elementary school, an hour of environmental education. The Weather and Electro Hyper-Sensitivity

http://www.mast-victims.org/index.php?content=journal&action=view&type=journal&id=197

the weather yes >>> cold months and at their lowest in mid-summer

Update II
Created: 11 Nov 2010

Nearly a year on and I've noticed a continued correlation between microwave exposure and seizures, and also, quite markedly, a seasonal variation in the ambient signal levels (and my symptoms) which seems consistently to have them elevated in the cold months and at their lowest in mid-summer. I wasn't sure about this at first but it's three cold seasons I've been paying attention now and there seems to be a clear pattern along those lines.

Is it due to increased foliage absorbing or blocking microwave emissions in the summer months, increased reflection in the winter months off snow and ice, seasonal geomagnetic variations affecting signal propagation, or simply increased use of those frequencies in the winter? Considering the rumours I hear of trees being the scourge of radio engineers' propagation efforts, perhaps the first is the more likely, or the predominant, explanation.

In any event, I moved away from the city at the end of February this year and live in a farmhouse more than two kilometres from the nearest mast.

My employer continues to permit me to work from home on a provisional basis, although I've now had two medical doctors assess me and recommend to them that I be allowed to work from home and am awaiting a decision from the employers on whether my work-at-home arrangement will be formalised. Neither of these doctors specifically admitted to me any acceptance of my claims of electrohypersensitivity nor any causal connection between microwaves and my seizures. One simply recommended that I be permitted to work from home because I apparently do better there, for whatever reason (explicitly stating in his letter that there was no scientific basis for a connection between seizures and microwaves). The other, having been hired by my employers to evaluate me, did not share his reasoning with me, but also recommended I be allowed to continue working from home.

At the property I try to restrict myself most of the time to areas where the ambient microwave signal level is one microwatt per square meter or lower, and I seldom leave the property. My tonic clonic seizures, so long as this is maintained, have been absent. Only on the few occasions when I'm careless and rack up some higher exposure do I seem to suffer the tonic clonic seizures (on average about one every four months over the last year or so, although decidedly not with an even distribution over the year).

The house I'm in is of wooden construction primarily, which doesn't seem to provide as good protection as stone or brick, and areas where I spend the most time (office and bed) are partially shielded against the direction of the nearest mast with stainless steel insect screen with spaces between the wire just slightly larger than a square millimeter each.

The screen is significantly cheaper than most of the specialised fabrics I've found on the market and seems to do a pretty good job of blocking microwave transmissions if it's deployed carefully. It's just a bit stubborn to work with.

I've also applied Graham Stetzer filters to electrical outlets throughout the house to reduce 'harmonics' from 'dirty electricity' on the house's wiring, although I don't know if this has had any effect on my health. I am pretty sure, however, that two steps I've taken to reduce radiofrequency emissions in my work space have been particularly helpful at making me feel better.

One is replacing my USB computer mouse with a PS/2 mouse. The latter (at least the one I have) has far lower RF and 50/60 Hz readings and doesn't give rise to the same EHS symptoms. The other is replacing my fluorescently lit computer monitor with an LED-lit monitor. Both have LCD screens, but the latter, like the PS/2 mouse, seems to have much weaker emissions.

Although I don't think I've ever tried one, I'm guessing USB keyboards should also be avoided in favour of the ones with the traditional purple plug, whatever it's called.

Living as I do, isolated from mast signal (and obviously using no wireless internet, mobile phone, microwave oven or other microwave-emitting device that I'm aware of), I notice my other EHS symptoms also seem quite well controlled. Sleep, mood, nerves, digestion, all seem consistently in good form so long as I keep away from signal, although I find I need to do so fairly religiously and not let the discipline slip, or the problems start coming back.

Memory may be the slowest to have shown good improvement, but it too seems now to have made some pleasing gains. This may also be attributable to my internal application of the herbal remedy uncaria rhynchophylla, at a concentrated daily dose of half a gram (derived from ten grams of fresh herb) for the last twenty or so months.

Now I have to worry about the expanding network of 'Smart Meters' and try to keep one off my property, as well as to stay vigilant against the possible erection of new towers in my area.

I've cultivated contacts in municipal planning departments in my area in order to keep abreast of any applications for new mast erections, so that I can be aware in advance of the need to fight (or flee further into the bush). I'm hoping neither will be necessary.
Good health to all.

Update
Created: 20 Nov 2009

Several months on and feeling much better. I have avoided masts religiously and my improvement is marked. No generalised seizures, and even the throat spasms are reduced. I have very few symptoms to complain of, though I feel certain cognitive and motor faculties are not quite what they once were - memory is much improved but fatigue can bring back some of the barriers to recall. Also noticing more verbal slips - subtle things like minor word mispronunciation and letter reversal, which I normally catch immediately and correct. These occur in speech, typing and handwriting.

But I don't wish to complain of these things too much - it is such a relief to be experiencing my overwhelming improvements generally and I'm grateful for them.

Last week I went out into the world of masts for the first time in several months and note here, in case it is of clinical interest to anyone, how the exposure seems to have affected me. When I went out I was doing well - feeling for the most part in better health than perhaps I had in years. We were going out to view a property for lease - away from masts - and had intended, my wife and I, to drive as quickly as safely possible through urban traffic to minimise my exposure to high-strength signal. We were caught, however, in an unexpected traffic queue from which we couldn't escape, where there had been a road accident and emergency crews were responding.

This was at the foot of an extremely powerful mast - less than 50 m away - I had with me an 'Electrosmog Detector' and the audio report from it was deafening.

There was little we could do there but wait, and I was under this heavy exposure for perhaps five minutes. Again, I had not been thus exposed for months.

At the time of exposure I felt mild prickling and heat in my arms. My head was wrapped in highly conductive copper-tin Zelt fabric - a safety precaution to reduce head exposure to mast signal considering my more serious neurological symptoms - and my detector reported very little signal inside the wrapping. Thus the brunt of the exposure was on the rest of my body, particularly my arms and torso, which were really bathed in the radiation.

My symptoms began mostly the next day. I felt very heavy-headed and drowsy, with occasional difficulty keeping awake - this lasted about three days, improving slightly each day. I had frequent muscle spasms in my arms and legs lasting five of six days - mainly my arms (note they were far more exposed than my legs, which had the benefit of being better shielded by the car body), also improving slightly each day. I had vertigo - faint-headedness upon standing, which felt like it was the result of low blood pressure - gradually improving over the course of the week; and I had digestive disturbance - muscles deep in my abdomen felt as though they were involuntarily clenched tight, and this resulted in pain, gas and a sick feeling, which also has taken about a week to resolve (my diet was unchanged). Not one of these symptoms was present in the weeks or even months before my recent exposure. My sleep, although mildly more disturbed after the exposure for about five days, was not really badly affected, and I wonder whether this had to do with the head protection I used.

Now, just over a week on, I'm feeling back on track. It seems even a five-minute dose of high-enough intensity signal is enough for me to feel somewhat battered for about a week.

One further note: I've noticed Canadian wintertime is having the effect of greatly increasing ambient signal in the city. I have taken signal readings fairly extensively and believe this change is due entirely to the reduction in leaf cover. Toronto is a very green city in summer and I realise now all those trees afford significant protection.

With the leaves all fallen and some signal penetrating into the upper levels of the house (which it was not in the summer) I am now living in the basement and emerge only briefly for daily exercise, sunlight and food. But I'm feeling well!

General history and comment
Created: 3 Jul 2009

I am in my late twenties and since the age of seven have had localised seizures or spasms of the throat on account of an underlying nervous condition which I do not associate with microwave transmissions. This problem in itself did not in any of its instances or manifestations result in prolonged loss of consciousness, nor has it ever seemed to present a serious impediment to normal living.

A couple of years ago I had, for the first time, a single generalised tonic clonic seizure which did result in loss of consciousness and brief hospitalisation. From what I understand from the doctors and medical literature, it is unusual for this to occur for the first time in a person's late twenties absent some external factor like head injury or drug use. In my case neither was present. MRI, EEG, ECG and blood analyses by doctors ruled out any of the usual causes for a sudden and unexpected seizure.

Granting the fact, given my history of small, localised seizures or spasms, that I am probably predisposed to occasional excess or irregular neuronal activity, in retrospect I can nonetheless connect the first generalised seizure with a host of electrosensitivity symptoms which had been building up beforehand (mainly emotional and digestive problems, and limb numbness), as well as to the fact that a few hours before experiencing it I had been working within 100 m of a wireless transmission mast without interruption for about 15 hours (this was not my normal work location).

At the time of this first seizure I was not aware of the possibility of electrosensitivity and did not consider it as a possible reason for the seizure, although I had been living for a number of months in an area of very high wireless signal propagation, both from transmission masts and wireless internet networking, in the Toronto city centre. I speculate as to the mechanism by which the shift from the lesser to the more severe condition occurred - and here I lack the scientific knowledge to support the speculation and would welcome any input, corroborating or otherwise - that prolonged exposure to these transmissions weakened the blood-brain barrier enough in me, or excited my neuronal activity sufficiently (or that those two effects combined) for my mild nervous disorder to become a more serious neurological condition involving generalised seizures, loss of consciousness and energetic somnambulism resulting in injury to myself.

About six months later I had another generalised seizure, was again hospitalised and discharged with no cause determined, and still did not identify wireless transmissions as related.

Shortly afterwards I moved from Toronto to Ottawa for work, where I lived in an apartment building with a couple of transmission masts on top. A few months into my stay there the sleep and emotional difficulties I had experienced at moderate levels for years began becoming worse, with hair loss, heart palpitations and unusual irritability thrown into the mix (I'm normally quite calm, even-tempered and diplomatic, and I really wasn't behaving completely like my usual self) despite regular exercise, a reasonably balanced diet and a job that does not involve an unusually high level of stress.

Then these generalised (night-time) seizures began happening with greater frequency and more injuries, to the point where doctors advised it was not safe for me to spend nights alone, which prompted my return to Toronto so I could sleep under the supervision of my family.

Back in Toronto I moved into a suburban house where the large bedroom window was directly in the path of a mast mounted on an apartment building (you could see it from the window - it was less than 500 m away and the path of the signal to my bedroom was not interrupted by any physical barrier except air and the glass window). My sleep problems worsened drastically, and the seizures became even more frequent.

Electrosensitivity problems I had been experiencing for years - notably limb numbness, memory and concentration difficulties, emotional complaints and muscle stiffness - also worsened.

Then on a visit to my parents for a week (during which time I was also not at work) I noticed that the symptoms - all of them - began improving, some rapidly, some gradually. I had visited my parents regularly in past years but not for a week, not overnight, and not at a time when I was away from work (my work locations in Ottawa and Toronto were also in proximity to cellphone masts and wireless internet networks).

Greatly relieved at the respite from my ailments and with newfound hope I immediately set about to try and identify a materially distinguishing factor about my parents' house or my living habits there, and could not pin anything down as decisive.

The connection between mobile telephony and health problems had been mentioned to me previously, although I had never given the possibility sufficiently serious consideration before. I was keen to follow up every possible lead (I was even sending air samples to labs for analysis), and purchased a low-end microwave signal detector from a local mail-order vendor, made the rounds of former residences with it and compared the signal strength at each to that at my parents' home. All three residences, including the Ottawa location, had extremely high signal strength according to the detector, whereas my parents' location showed up virtually none.

My parents also live in Toronto, a large city permeated with wireless transmissions, but by fortunate circumstance their house is at roughly the farthest point possible from each of the five or six masts in their neighbourhood and is shielded by rows of houses and buildings in each direction. Their front garden is not shielded and is in direct line of sight of a mast approximately 800 metres away, but the house itself, and the back garden, is well blocked. Of course mobile phones still have good reception at my parents' house and so it is obviously well within the area of signal propagation (probably within several overlapping areas), but by the readings on the detector it is not in a location of overwhelming signal strength, as in the direct shadow of a mast, and being here seems to have alleviated most of my symptoms. I now believe, given my experience, that it is completely reasonable to link wireless transmissions to many of my health complaints, although I have not experimented sufficiently to determine what level of signal strength I can tolerate, if there is indeed a simple fixed threshold which is independent of other factors, and whether certain frequencies are worse for me.

To begin what modest experimentation I have done I moved to my parents' house - fortunately I have been able to work from home and have fairly mobile office equipment - and have now been here nearly three months with symptoms vastly reduced and no seizures (other than the older, milder type), with only one exception: near the start of my stay here I ventured out near a mast for a few hours, visiting friends, and had a seizure the next night. Since then I have not left the premises other than for walks and jogs in the neighbourhood (of course avoiding streets with high signal strength) and for one visit to the hospital for a test, and problems I've had for years have cleared up. Sleep and emotions are greatly improved, tingling and numbness in the limbs is now rare, hair loss has decreased and even my old neck stiffness is gone. I had always put that down to sitting in front of a computer all day, but now I think it had more to do with wireless transmissions.

I cannot say I feel fully recovered. I seem to need more sleep now than in the past in order to maintain wellbeing; my happiness and mental clarity, while very well improved (and continually improving), something for which I'm hugely thankful, still seem precarious. If I eat or sleep poorly or am exposed to too much stress old symptoms begin threatening, but having identified one of the primary causes, if not the primary cause, of my ailments I believe I am much better equipped to try and take measures to keep myself well.

Avoiding masts in a large city is challenging, and I have not yet found a safe way to venture about in the city (I do not know if there is one). I'm testing various conductive fabrics in the hope of putting together an outerwear garment which protects the body from radio transmissions, although I fear there may not be a fabric conductive enough to eliminate the signal penetration to the body around a mast. If anyone has had any success in this I would much like to hear about it. I have not been a cellphone user for years and now of course avoid cellphones religiously. My family do not use cellphones around me, there is no wireless computer network in my parents' home and we request of all visitors that they shut off their phones while here.

The one time I tried using a cellphone in recent months I felt tingling all over my head, and experienced an unfamiliar sense of excitement, nervousness and agitation all wrapped up together, which then became a feeling of having been lightly burned on the surface of my skin, which then faded away after a few hours. I understand there is research linking mobile phone usage to increased neuronal activity (particularly a dangerous thing for epileptics, I would think), and suspect this is at least part of what was going on when I tried the phone, although there are no doubt those who would suggest, insultingly, that I was imagining the sensations.

I don't have much hope of convincing my neurologist or anyone in the medical establishment anytime soon that my symptoms, including the generalised seizures I began experiencing, are attributable to microwave transmissions.

There seems to be an entrenched culture of suspicion in the medical community here towards ideas which do not originate in the body of medical doctrine taught within the profession, and a tendency among practitioners not to take particularly seriously the hypotheses brought forward by patients themselves about their own conditions. The subjectivity of patient reports reduce their diagnostic value in the eyes of doctors to, some might say, an absurd degree (considering no one is better placed to observe patient symptoms over a long period of time, with acute attention to every detail, than patients themselves). There is also perhaps too much readiness among doctors here to attribute complaints of physical symptoms where mood and sleep disorders are also present to depression or anxiety and not to seek causality beyond that.

But every profession has its limitations, and the values and practices of the medical community are perhaps only a reflection of our own always-changing cultural attitudes. With sufficient social agitation, litigation, activism and, probably - unfortunately, pain and suffering among the general public from wireless transmissions our cultural climate may eventually come round to acceptance of the link between the transmissions and the suffering, and of the notion that the horrific trade-offs which attend our freedom to roam and speak, to communicate without the burden of wires, may sometimes (often) outweigh the benefits. Then the scientific findings supporting the existence of electrosensitivity and its potential for serious health effects may be permitted to inform the corpus of medical knowledge and practice generally accepted in the profession in North America.

For now I hope and pray that I am able to maintain and continue to improve my health, that I can find a suitable, affordable, longer-term, low-signal location to live in, that my employer continues to permit me to work from home without medical documentation explicitly linking my health complaints to wireless exposure (or that I can come by such documentation from a sympathetic doctor), that others with similar problems are as fortunate as I both in identifying wireless transmissions as a contributing factor and being able to avoid them, that protective government regulation on this comes soon, and that awareness of the problem continues to be spread by the concerned public until scientific, medical, legal and regulatory authorities cannot but act to address it.

I am interested in reading existing scientific research papers on the biological effects of wireless transmissions and welcome comments from anyone possessing same. I don't mind if they're old or in other languages. If you have one I would be happy to pay your reasonable copying and mailing costs for sending me a copy - subject to my prior agreement that the article is of interest to me. Please let me know if you do, or if you know where I can find one, by leaving a comment here. Any information of a sympathetic or open-minded doctor in Ontario willing to entertain the possibility of electrosensitivity would also be very welcome.

The Canadian Charger

http://www.thecanadiancharger.com:80/page.php?id=5&a=554

Barrie Trower, a physicist and former British Secret Service Microwave Weapons Specialist, said he came out of retirement because microwave technology that was used for weapons is now being used in schools.

Speaking at the University of Toronto recently, Mr. Trower said he refuses all gifts and all money; consequently he tells it "exactly as it is."

He said there is a lot of proof that microwave radiation – used for cell phones and WiFi - is harmful and governments have known this for many years.

"Your government (Canadian) is one of the world leaders in microwave radiation research. The U.S. joined Canada in conducting research ... The first symptoms of microwave sickness were documented in 1932."

He added that there are 13 secret code names of microwave radiation research used by Canada, the U.S. and Britain.

Research results show that lung damage, destroyed brain cells and damage to the blood brain barrier are among a litany of ill-effects of prolonged exposure to low levels of microwave radiation; and children are the most susceptible because their cells are close to the size of the microwaves. Mr. Trower said this means children act as antennae for the microwaves.

"Children are not small adults. Their systems have not yet formed. It takes a few years for the blood brain barrier to form. It's like a fish net that surrounds the brain and keeps toxins out (of the brain). Microwave radiation makes the wholes (in the blood brain barrier) bigger so toxins leak into the brain. This can cause psychiatric problems."

Auditory hallucinations that make people think they're hearing sounds, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, sleeplessness and irritability are among the symptoms of blood brain barrier damage researchers have documented.

Damage to the immune system, which takes 18 years to develop in children, is another effect of exposure to microwave radiation Mr. Trower cites.

He also said we have electric cables in our bodies, formed by mile-long, inch-thick sheets of layers of proteins, that take 22 years to develop in children; and microwave radiation affects the protein synthesis.

Mr. Trower said there isn't a school in the world that hasn't seen an increase in aggression and other bad behavior when WiFi was introduced.

He cites paranoia, hallucinations, suicidal tendencies and inability to make decisions, among the deleterious effects of exposure to low levels of microwave radiation.

Then he gave an explanation for why little is being done about this issue.

"By 1971 we knew everything that needed to be known. This document (a 1976 summary of U.S. Defense intelligence agencies' research) is the saddest most despicable document ever published in history. Lack of concentration, menstrual disorders, headaches and irritability are some of the effects of exposure to microwaves, listed in this document," Mr. Trower said, followed by this statement: 'This should be kept secret to preserve industrial profit.' "

He added that as far back as the 1950's profit was deemed what needed protection, not people's health.

"In the 1950's researchers conducted experiments on the effects of microwave radiation. Their report contained this statement: 'If this paper becomes known around the world, it will threaten military and commercial investments.'"

Remarkably, the European Parliament has decided that it can't even trust the World Health Organization's (WHO) guidelines for acceptable levels of microwave radiation.

Mr. Trower said the European Parliament wrote to its 27 countries urging them to ignore WHO guidelines and set exposure limits at lower levels. And what was the WHO's response?

"The WHO said they will not comment on microwave radiation effects on people until 2015, when it will be able to establish effects on human beings. They are watching people to see how many will become sick. We're being experimented upon."

He added that the WHO only began studying microwave radiation effects on children in 2009 and it said it won't be able to comment until 2020.

Meanwhile, Mr. Trower said Russia is banning any children under 18 from microwave exposure, when possible, and Britain said children under 12 should have no microwave radiation exposure at all.

This is in the wake of reports made to the British parliament detailing the cases of 11 children under 11 years old who have leukemia. Mr. Trower said this is how the government responded:

"The minister said we're within international guidelines and sat down. This happened four times."

However, as a result of research that documents the harmful effects of microwave radiation on fetuses, the British government said that pregnant women must not be exposed to microwave radiation.

"The head of the fetus has multiple connections going on in the brain of the fetus. Microwave radiation gives the fetus an innumerable amount of electrical shocks. This can cause brain blood barrier damage that can result in severe psychiatric disorders later in life."

And this is but one of a number of risks to fetus development microwave radiation causes.

"It's a serious thing, even low levels of microwave radiation," Mr. Trower said. "It affects ovarian follicles and eggs. It can damage genes and eggs and the damage is irreparable. Generations will carry genetic defects. It's threatening the health of future generations, so it must never be put in schools."

He said there is no known safe level of microwave radiation for a child. "No scientist in the world has published a safe level for a child."

U.K. expert warns against Wi-Fi

Published On Thu Aug 26 2010

http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/article/853091--u-k-expert-warns-against-wi-fi

San Grewal Staff Reporter

The debate surrounding potentially dangerous Wi-Fi networks in schools has been put to rest by the Ontario education ministry, which feels that if Health Canada endorses the technology as safe, end of story.

But Barrie Trower, a British physicist who carried out research for the Royal Navy and military intelligence into the effects of microwave radiation, has come out of retirement to exhort bodies such as Health Canada to heed his life's work.

The Star caught up with Trower after his Tuesday lecture at the University of Toronto on the dangers of Wi-Fi technology and other common household sources of microwave radiation.

In the face of its recent declaration that Wi-Fi networks are safe in schools, what would you tell Health Canada?

"That's wrong. If we know there are no levels safe for children and children are everywhere, how can they be safe? I have never met a single person that has read the ICNIRP (International Commission for Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection) guideline. It says, 'Children, the elderly and some chronically ill people, might have a lower tolerance for one or more forms of microwave exposure.' Your government uses a safety threshold of 'not (greater than) 1,000 microwatts per cm2.' In 2007 a group of scientists came up with a safety level, the BioInitiative Report. Their level is 'not 0.1 microwatts per cm2.' "

Other than those with "electrosensitivity" why are children so susceptible to illness from Wi-Fi?

"Children are physiologically and neurologically immature. It takes years for the blood-brain barrier to form, leaving children more prone to cell-leakage from microwave radiation. And a person's immune system, which fights off damage, takes 18 years to develop. In all of the schools I have visited around the world with Wi-Fi, every one has reported the same symptoms in students: fatigue, headaches, nausea, chest pain, vision problems.

You have been invited to advise numerous countries about these dangers, but almost all have ignored the warnings. Why?

"The governments have buried this for 40 years. They have known about these dangers since the research was coming in decades ago. Now, what do they say? They've painted themselves into a corner. I think they're hoping the whole thing will go away. They're afraid of lawsuits if they admit this is dangerous. And despite all the research that shows microwave radiation is dangerous, no one in the telecom industry has ever admitted it. No one."

Top doctor's mobile phone radiation warning to children

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2010/07/15/top-doctor-s-mobile-phone-radiation-warning-to-children-115875-22413934/

A leading government doctor is urging kids to text instead of talking on mobile phones...for the sake of their health.

He admits there is no medical evidence at present that mobiles "fry" youngsters' brains. But Dr Tony Jewell, chief medical officer for Wales, said yesterday:

"Better safe than sorry.”

"We don't expect young people to stop using mobiles altogether but there are steps they can take to protect their health for the future."

Children in Wales are being targeted with leaflets that tell them:

"When you use a mobile it sends out radio signals close to your head.”

“The longer you talk, the more time you are exposed to radio signals. Current research does not suggest young people are especially sensitive to phone signals.”

"More research is needed, however, and we recommend young people keep down their exposure to radio signals just in case a health concern is found."

John Jenkins, spokesman for the British Medical Association in Wales, said: "Although there is no current evidence of a direct link with health problems, it would be wise for children to limit their use."

The Mobile Operators' Association stressed that there was no evidence of health risks.

Executive director John Cooke, said: "To date, no adverse effects have been established. If parents are still concerned, they can encourage children to keep calls short, send texts, or use hands-free devices."

A Department of Health spokeswoman said: "As a precaution, children should only use mobiles for essential purposes and keep calls short. All phones sold in the UK comply with international rules on non-ionising radiation."

She added that the Chief Medical Officer for England offered no recommendations about children using text messaging over voice calls.

Letter to BC Hydro

Dear Ms. Verschoor: I am writing to express my concerns regarding BC Hydro's plan to install 'smart' meters on every BC home. Although I applaud the effort to conserve energy and do as much conservation as I can, there are other issues at stake here. Namely, the fact that these meters use wireless transmitters, which rely on signals in the microwave spectrum similar to cell phones and WiFi computer systems. This band, between the 900 Mhz to 2.4 Ghz range, has been shown in numerous independent international studies to have effects on human health at power levels even below those commonly used to transmit these signals. Our bodies rely on electrical signals to function; our cells, like any communication network, rely on them to repair and sustain themselves.

Pulsed radiation from microwaves disrupts cellular communication in biological systems. Some scientific studies have shown that cellular damage is done by repeated exposure to microwave signals, including DNA strand breaks. While single strand DNA breaks can be repaired by the body, double strand breaks cannot, and become genetic mutation that is passed on to offspring.

Aside from that, the experience with smart meters in California has not been encouraging. Citizens have complained of numerous health issues, including heart rate problems, high blood pressure, insomnia, tinnitus, chronic fatigue, etc.

Part of the problem is that our civilization is currently layering one form of electromagnetically-powered device over another, so the effects are cumulative. By introducing yet another layer with smart meters, we are setting the stage for more widespread chronic illness and eventually cancers of various kinds. Even the recently released Interphone study, which has been largely discredited by reputable scientists, showed a 40% increase in certain types of brain tumours with heavy use of cell phones. In fact the rate is much higher according to studies whose methodology has been properly conducted, probably closer to a 200% higher incidence of tumours.

The other issue in California has been that the smart meters apparently are not at all accurate and have resulted in numerous incidences of conflict between the utility company and clients who say they have been grossly overcharged. The utility then relies exclusively on the smart meter reading, somehow assuming it can't make a mistake, and holds customers to account.

BC Hydro could be asking for far more trouble than the minor savings these meters provide are worth, in terms of disputes with customers.

Once again I see that our Liberal government is prepared to ram through another legislation designed to help the corporate sector through its new Clean Energy Act, under the guise of being environmentally friendly. There is no opt-out clause in this Act for customers who may be sensitive to electromagnetic radiation through smart meters. That is like saying, "You'll take our pollution and like it whether you want it or not." That is hardly a "free market" economy, when there is no choice.

I am prepared to discuss other options for saving energy, and already have a solar hot water system installed so as to cut energy costs between May-October.

However, I will resist with all my power any attempt to install wireless smart meters on my home.

Sincerely,

Art Joyce

Smart Meter causing harm to Ontario Resident

I am electrically hypersensitive - so much so, that I had to suddenly quit my job of 25 years and moved to a small community that measured fairly safe electro magnetic radiation. It was not a sudden illness but rather a misdiagnosed illness for over 10 years. When my doctor finally figured it out, I moved suddenly and instantly as the illness had progressed so badly.  I now live in rural Ontario and am indeed feeling that much better.  However, over the last month or so, I was beginning to feel sick again and could not figure this out.  I had bought a house and took 5 months of gutting 7 out of the 9 rooms and making it safe for me with the help of several knowledgeable people.  I have been very fortunate to have known about all these people.  I had a fantastic contractor who researched absolutely every product that went into this house as I am also chemically sensitive.

It has been truly an expensive venture but worth it.  After doing all of this and moving in, it was alarming to still feel sick.  I got out my RF Analyzer meter and read the back of the smart meter from the inside of my house.  It was reading high every 2 minutes with bursts of information going out.

This is the information I have come up with regarding smart meters and what can be done:

The meter base can go into a weather proof meter box installed on a pedestal somewhere on your property.  Apparently, this box, if closed entirely would not allow them to actually read the meter so a hole is cut into it and covered with plexiglass for the reading. It has to be faced away from you. All costs are at the expense of the homeowner and one must dig a trench to bury the line but you can use the same trench that has to be dug if you are burying the hydro line.

The Smart Meter program is Provincially mandated, so I called the Minister's office and they were extremely helpful.

The gentleman I talked with also said that I was not the first phone call he had received on this issue.  I told him that I was getting sicker and sicker as each day went by and that sometimes I could not feel my hands and feet at night with the numbness and tingling etc.  This man said he would call the hydro utility company in charge of my power and then they get authorisation through the Town or City to bury the hydro on the Town property and to move the meter somewhere on your property.  By the way, they were all extremely helpful especially after they had seen the work I had done to date with the wiring, on-demand switches, additional DC wiring etc.

I myself had a different thing done which was, miraculously, to have the smart meter placed on a pole across the street and facing away from me.  However, I was not then able to encase it in this weatherproof meter box as it was not on my property. This is just the solution that the Utility company came up with for my situation to expedite the matter. I don't know if it will have been better to encase the meter closer to me on my property and facing away.  Apparently these weatherproof meter boxes are commercial grade and only emit radiation out through the plexiglass hole in the way it is facing.

It still remains to be seen whether the meter, being across the street and not encased in a weatherproof meter box, will reduce the radiation. (in my instance I did not have the choice to put it on my property as one of those meter boxes was unavailable and no-one seemed too enthused by the idea of encasing it in one).  As of now, the electrician has only just moved the meter to the pole across the street and I am waiting for the electrical company to approve it before getting rid of the overhead hydro line, burying the line and hooking up the meter.  I will measure it when it's done and let you all know what happens and if my symptoms go away again.  They are still greatly reduced from where they were in Toronto although not as good as before the smart meters were installed.

Kamloop ready to seek bids on meters

JULY 9,2010

http://www.kamloopsnews.ca/article/20100709/KAMLOOPS0101/307099983/-1/kamloops/city-ready-to-seek-bids-on-meters

City utilities director David Duckworth says a request for proposals to provide and install 21,000 radio-frequency water meters is ready to go.

The three-year deal should be going out today or early next week, he said Thursday.
He expects about six proposals to be submitted in the next four weeks or so.

The submissions will then be reviewed and go to City council for a decision, probably in September.

If all goes according to schedule, meter installation should begin late this year in downtown, Valleyview, Barnhartvale and Juniper and Dallas.

That first phase will take about a year to complete; the entire citywide installation is expected to take three years.

Duckworth said a short mock billing period might follow as each phase gets switched from flat rate to meters. That billing would show homeowners their costs and water use.

Houses that have older-style meters, such as those on the volunteer program or that have been built since 1999, when the City required the devices be installed but not hooked up, will get them changed out with
radio-frequency meters.

The cost of the whole program is $14 million, with funding coming from the municipal gas tax fund and the water utility operating reserve.

The radio-frequency meters contain a small battery that emits a signal every 15 seconds or so. The batteries can last 15 to 20 years.

The EHS were protected from EMC in a French forest.

They are now under appeal by the justice of the Drome region for illegal occupation with damages of € 10,000 and € 5,000 per additional day of occupation.

They will be held July 21 at the tribunal of Valencia.

Yes, they have set up an encampment in a forest where they are safe from electromagnetic radiation, but technically they are trespassing because they don't have permission to be there.

They could be heavily fined if their appeal doesn't succeed.

The members of the group that has set up the settlement say they have nowhere else that is safe for them to live, so they are entitled to occupy this piece of land which is not used for any other purpose. The landowner doesn't agree and is trying to get them evicted. It could go through several more stages of appeal.

They are being treated like travellers in an unlicensed gypsy encampment, with the difference that they don't have the strong legal protection that travellers now have in the UK.

SmartMeter questioned in Scotts Valley

by Michelle Camerlingo

http://www.pressbanner.com/view/full_story/8777401/article-SmartMeter-questioned-in-Scotts-Valley?instance=home_news_lead_story

Jul 15, 2010

Pacific Gas and Electric Co.'s crusade to place SmartMeter devices at all California homes and businesses has been met with complaints of inaccurate billing issues and health risks across the state.

With less than a month before the digital meters are slated to arrive in town, the utility giant visited the Scotts Valley City Council on July 7 to boast about the benefits of the new technology, which it began installing in 2006. The digital gas and electricity meters are supposed to replace analog technology that dates back to Thomas Edison's experiments in the late 1800s.

In response to please from a number of residents, the City Council agreed to consider a moratorium on SmartMeter installation until the August release of an ongoing state report by the California Public Utilities Commission on the meters' accuracy.

"I have no problem with joining a probably meaningless moratorium, but you've got to understand that there is a push for a green economy right now, and this is part of that push," Vice Mayor Dene Bustichi said. "But it's a balancing act for what's best for the entire community."

Councilwoman Stephany Aguilar said customers should be able to opt out of the program.

Talk of health risks stems from electromagnetic radiation emitted by the devices, similar to that produced by cell phones, baby monitors and, more extremely, microwaves.

"I myself am very sensitive to EMF emissions and don't see any harm in supporting the moratorium," Aguilar said.
But PG&E senior director William Devereaux said the company is under orders to proceed with the new technology from the state and federal government.

The Obama administration has launched an $8 billion endeavor to upgrade the country's electricity grid, which includes meter improvements.

Devereaux said the new meters will allow PG&E to track power consumption hourly and eventually will allow customers to watch how much power they use at certain times of day, down to individual appliances in the home.

The aim is for people to shift consumption away from peak use times, such as late afternoon, which would save energy and fossil fuels, Devereaux said. With digital meters, power use could be charged by the hour and prices could change with the time of day.

For the plan to work most efficiently, everyone has to participate, Devereaux said.

Roughly 6 million of PG&E's 10 million customers already have digital meters. But grievances about hefty bills have plagued the company every time it installs them in a new jurisdiction.

In May, the utility company admitted that about 23,000 SmartMeters could have been the source of billing inaccuracies.

Devereaux said the company is tackling the mistakes.

"We are working on the problems," he said. "They are more accurate than the previous meters."

On June 18, San Francisco's city attorney asked state regulators to halt meter installation in the city until the Public Utility Commission report is finished. Santa Cruz County supervisors joined the request soon after.

Berkeley's City Council also has drafted a letter in response to a number of worries about the digital meters.

Joshua Hart, who recently started a group called Scotts Valley Neighbors Against Smart Meters, said he and many other residents worry about the financial, health and safety consequences of the meters.

Hart does not own or use a cell phone because of electromagnetic emissions.

San Francisco recently passed a law that requires cell phone retailers to disclose radiation levels because of a connection between radiation and brain tumors, Hart said.

"PG&E has grossly miscalculated the health impacts of EMF radiation," Hart said.

But Devereaux said the World Health Organization and the Federal Communication Commission have ruled that the digital meters are safe.

Hart contended that the FCC's standards are outdated.

"Levels of electromagnetic radiation permitted in the U.S. are banned by law in other countries, like Italy, Russia and Switzerland," Hart said.

Hart said the installation of digital meters will allow the layoffs of more than 1,000 meter readers, because the meters send out wireless signals and can be read remotely, which eliminates the need to visit every customer.

Devereaux said about 400 meter readers have lost their jobs, while 80 percent were moved to other areas of the company.

While layoffs and billing inaccuracies were part of the discussion at the City Council meeting, the people who spoke were most alarmed by the health risks.

Scotts Valley resident Marilyn Garrett compared the meters with microwave radiation.

"We need public ownership of utilities that works in the interest of the public," Garrett said.

Christine Barrington of Scotts Valley said that she's not sure about the health risks, but she has a very good reason not to trust the corporation and government.

"I feel there is no rush," Barrington said. "I think we need to slow down until we really understand what the costs may be."

Yale Study Shows Electrical Fields Influence Brain Activity

Published: July 14, 2010

http://opa.yale.edu/news/article.aspx?id=7646

Neuronal activity is measured by EEG. Now it appears that electrical fields influence behavior of brain cells.

New Haven, Conn. — Most scientists have viewed electrical fields within the brain as the simple byproducts of neuronal activity. However, Yale scientists report in the July 15 issue of the journal Neuron that electrical fields can also influence the activity of brain cells.

The finding helps explain why techniques that influence electrical fields such as transcranial magnetic stimulation and deep brain stimulation are effective for the treatment of various neurological disorders, including depression. The study also "raises many questions about the possible effects of electrical fields, such as power lines and cell phones, in which we immerse ourselves," said David McCormick, the Dorys McConnell Duberg Professor of Neurobiology at Yale School of Medicine, a researcher of the Kavli Institute of Neuroscience and senior author of the study.

The chemical process that triggers tiny charges in the membranes of neurons causes much of the brain's electrical activity. Electroencephalograms, or EEGs, detect these fluctuations when they occur in large numbers of neurons together. These internal electrical signals contain information about certain cognitive and behavioral states but, until now, it had not been shown whether they actually change the activity of the brain itself.

McCormick and Flavio Frohlich, a postdoctoral research associate, introduced slow oscillation signals into brain tissue and found that the signal created a sort of feedback loop, with changes in electrical field guiding neural activity, which in turn strengthened the electrical field.

"It's like asking whether the roar of the crowd in the football stadium also influences you to cheer as well. And in turn, your cheering encourages others to cheer along with you." McCormick said.

The ability of electric fields generated by the brain to influence its own activity appears to be particularly prominent during epileptic seizures. However, the influence of electric fields is not limited to these pathological states. The study of Frohlich and McCormick demonstrates that the electrical fields also influence brain function during normal activities such as sleep.

McCormick said the findings change the way in which we view brain function and may be of significant clinical value in controlling epilepsy, depression and other neural dysfunctional states.
