Researcher is not a 'fear-monger'

Kingston Whig-Standard 3 nov. 2010

Re: "Wi-Fi story irresponsible, dangerous" (Letter to the Editor, Oct. 18).

For the past 40 years technology has been developing so rapidly that studies of the long-term effects of many inventions, particularly in the telecommunications area, are only gradually becoming fully recognized. One of the most urgent areas of study has been the biological effects of electro-magnetic radiation (EMR) on human health with governments, the military and industry in many cases reluctant to recognize the need for regulation. We are surrounded by cellphones, cordless phones, high voltage transmission lines, microwave towers and antennas, GPS systems, microwave ovens, computers, and many other sources of electro-magnetic radiation.

Recently, one of the foremost researchers who has been studying the biological effects of electromagnetic radiation in animals and humans for two decades, Dr. Magda Havas, spoke to a community organization and a Whig reporter on Oct. 13. It is regrettable that D.S. Lay in a recent letter, while presenting no scientific studies, described Dr. Havas as a "fear-monger." Fear mongers generally tend to create fear by presenting false, imprecise, vague or exaggerated information.

It is regrettable that Mr. Lay is relying on outdated concepts about the nature of radiation which have caused him to dismiss research which is internationally recognized and respected. Dr. Havas is a member of the Environmental and Resource Studies Department at Trent University whose reputation is international. She is frequently called on as a speaker in the U.S. and Europe, and is a science adviser to several non-profit organizations on EMR-related issues in Canada, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and the European Union.

Since much of the research she presents defines startling health effects of electro-magnetic radiation emissions that have damaged immune systems and the DNA of many of those exposed to low levels of non-ionizing radiation, fear is a logical human reaction. When risks to human health are described clearly and repeatedly in scientific journals, it is natural and wise for society to feel fear. A corollary of fear, however, can be the constructive research and problem solving that can result from scientific reporting of integrity.

For many years when scientific or medical research studies in their early stages identified risks to human health, it was easier for governments and professional organizations to assert that these risks had not been proven. One of the bestknown illustrations of governments accepting industry denials of health risk was the tobacco industry's well-financed defensive campaign that ended only after many years in long-delayed legislation to curb the tobacco industry. For this reason many countries have adopted the Precautionary Principle first endorsed by the UN General Assembly in 1982, which states that when an activity raises threats of serious or irreversible damage to human health or the environment, precautionary measures should be taken, even if some cause and effect relationships are not fully established scientifically.

Because the biological effects of electro-magnetic radiation may only appear after 10-15 years of exposure, though earlier in children, the rapid increase in the childhood leukemia rate and recently the growing incidence of brain tumours with a possible link to long-term cellphone use have now become matters of public discussion. Research continues in 22 countries even as new technology emitting EMR is produced monthly.

A new instance of health effects in young children exposed to electro-magnetic radiation in their schools was observed in Barrie, Ont., in the past year after the Barrie school board authorized the installation of Wi-Fi transmitters in several schools. The transmitters generate constant, pulsed digital microwave radiation, which has been shown to have adverse biological effects at levels well below Health Canada's Safety Code 6.

It is worth noting that in Switzerland guidelines for exposure to microwave radiation are 1% the power density of those in Canada. The children in Barrie were identified with health concerns that included lack of concentration and cardiac problems in schools in which the Wi-Fi transmitters had been installed. It will be very regrettable if school boards across Ontario do not quickly become well informed and make the decision to replace the Wi-Fi radio frequency transmitters by wired systems or fibre-optic links.

The Precautionary Principle should be prominent in the minds of school board trustees, teachers, and parents at all levels. It would be wise also to recognize that the biological changes that affect children will also affect exposed adults over a longer period (teachers, administrative staff and volunteers).

Ignorance is not bliss. Our great appreciation is due to dedicated researchers like Dr. Magda Havas for educating us.

Call for cancer warning labels on cellphones

By ANTONELLA ARTUSO, Queen's Park Bureau Chief

Last Updated: November 3, 2010 6:30pm

http://www.lfpress.com/news/canada/2010/11/03/15943166.html

TORONTO - Ontario doesn't need to slap warning stickers on cellphones because the devices are safe, Health Promotion Minister Margarett Best says.

"In my work, I am informed by scientists and doctors," Best said Wednesday. "One of our key doctors, the chief medical officer of health, Dr. Arlene King, has assured us that we do not have to worry about the safety of these types of devices."

NDP MPP France Gelinas is introducing a private member's bill that would force retailers to put warning stickers on the backs of cellphones and BlackBerrys.

If the law passes, customers would be given clear information about the radiation levels of each device and the possible negative health effects, including cancer, of long-term use, she said.

Currently, information advising users to avoid direct flesh-to-phone contact is printed in manuals.

"But frankly, who reads those?" Gelinas said.

Dr. Magda Havas, an associate professor of environmental and resource studies at Trent University, said there is reliable scientific evidence of an increased risk of tumours of the brain, eye and face with cellphone use.

In particular, children should be protected from unnecessary exposure up to the age of 18, and maybe up to 20 years of age, she said.

"Children are particularly sensitive to all sorts of chemical toxicants and radiation in the environment and there have been a growing number of health agencies around the world warning that children should minimize their use of cellphones," she said.

A proposal by the Toronto District School Board to extend the use of cellphones to the classroom would be a mistake, Havas said.

Texting is generally safer than using the cellphone directly and keeping the device in a front pant pocket is a bad idea, she said. Best said Health Canada has deemed cellphone use to be safe.

However, the minister said that children should not be on the phone for hours for other reasons.

"They have homework, they have so many other things that they should be doing," Best said. "And it's up to the parents and the family members to ensure that children are engaged actively and that they are engaged with their homework...instead of spending all the time on the cellphone."

Private member's bills rarely become law, and then only with the support of the ruling majority party.

Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak said he would not support such a bill, saying cellphones already come with a warning within the instruction manual and families should be left alone to make their own decisions.

LVX to replace WIFI ?

Visible Light Communication Embedded within the visible light generated by LED (Light Emitting Diode) lamps are modulating light signals that communicate with other lamps and equipment that possess the same technology at ultra-high speeds. These devices when placed throughout a building or geographic area form a comprehensive wireless communication network capable of providing many services including energy savings, communications and security functions.

Most wireless communications today are produced from radio waves generated from electronic equipment. "WI-FI", "3G Networks" and "Bluetooth" are examples of this applied technology. They each have limitations in data transmission speeds.

B.C. groups join push to turn off Wi-Fi at schools

The call to get wireless internet technology out of schools is getting louder, as fears grow about the potential dangers the technology poses to children.

A growing number of organizations are pointing to cases and research claiming radiation emitted by Wi-Fi technology can cause a range of health problems, including headaches, an inability to concentrate and heart palpitations.

Sharon Noble, chair of Citizens Against UnSafe Emissions (CAUSE) based in Victoria B.C., says the small convenience Wi-Fi offers is not worth the risk.

"We want wired internet. It's safe. Parents think [Wi-Fi] is cutting edge technology and it's not."

As Noble and other organizations try to get the message out to parents and officials, a public school in Meaford, Ontario has become the first in Canada to shut down wireless internet.

Parent of students at St. Vincent Euphrasia elementary school voted "overwhelmingly" to cut off Wi-Fi, according to a statement released by the school's parent council on Monday.

Their decision comes after a group of Ontario parents dubbed the Simcoe County Safe School Committee spoke out against Wi-Fi in schools this summer.

Parents at Lucerne School in New Denver, B.C., are joining the fight, and are choosing to keep hardwired computer systems.

"We encourage other parents to look into the increasingly evident side effects of wireless routers and computers, particularly to children whose bodies and brains are still developing," said the New Denver Parent Children's Association in a statement.

The group and other affiliated organizations are urging people to bring the message to Parliament by signing a petition.

Opponents point to research on electromagnetic radiation by Dr. Magda Havas of Trent University, who is asking health officers in each province to issue a warning about the use of Wi-Fi in a school environment.

While Health Canada says there is no "scientific evidence" that Wi-Fi in the classroom is dangerous to children, Havas says the federal guidelines need to be questioned because "the evidence so strongly indicates this form of radiation is harmful."

Noble says Health Canada "isn't doing its job", and wonders why there is such a push to go wireless with all the questions out there about health risks.

"Why does a kindergarten child need a laptop?" she asks.

Currently, the main sources of public exposure to electromagnetic fields are mobile phones, which currently outnumber the number of citizens of the European Union. 67% of Europeans consider that the signals emitted by the antennas of mobile telephony and to some extent affect their health and 58% of the population believes that the authorities do not adequately protect the public from the risks associated with exposure According to the report Electromagnetic Fields, published in June this year by Eurobarometer and the European Commission has made reference to Dr. Alejandro Úbeda, Bioelectromagnetics Section Chief of Hospital Ramón y Cajal de Madrid, during his speech in New Risks public health, which has taken place in the framework of the Sixth National Conference on Health Journalism.

Úbeda emphasized the lack of training and correct and complete information to determine the true impact of mobile phone use in the development of brain tumors. "Although several meta-analysis have provided some evidence that using mobile phones for over ten years could double the risk of being diagnosed with certain brain tumors, the inherent limitations of epidemiological methodology can not yet know for sure if the repeated and prolonged use Mobile is a risk factor. New electrical meters raise hackles of critics concerned with health risks and privacy

By: CLARKE CANFIELD
Associated Press
10/14/10
http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/economy/new-electrical-meters-raise-hackles-of-critics-concerned-with-health-risks-and-privacy-104982939.html
PORTLAND, MAINE — Power companies say new "smart meter" technology will cut energy use, benefit the environment and allow utilities to pinpoint problems during power outages more quickly.

But critics say the technology poses health risks and raises concerns about privacy and security.

Various studies say there's little or no evidence to suggest that exposure to radio frequencies from wireless network devices, such as the so-called smart meters, constitute health threats. But that's not stopping an outcry from smart-meter opponents who say additional investigation is warranted.

In Maine, dissenters have sent dozens of e-mails and letters to regulators and health officials just as the state's largest utility, Central Maine Power Co., begins its smart-meter rollout. A louder protest has come in California, where cities have passed moratoriums on the meters, demonstrators have blocked installation of the devices, and regulators have received thousands of complaints.

Smart meters have been linked to reports of dizziness, nausea, migraines, muscle spasms and insomnia, said Elisa Boxer-Cook, a vocal critic who wants CMP to stop installing the meters pending further study. Some people are concerned the meters might have more serious long-term effects, such as cancer, she said.

"The science is so unclear at this point that we don't want to blanket entire neighborhoods with radiation while scientists are debating this," said Boxer-Cook, of Scarborough.

But Dr. Dora Anne Mills, director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said based on the information she's seen, the meters aren't any more dangerous than wireless Internet routers and cordless telephones.

"Some of the analogies I've seen by opponents say it's like having a cell phone tower on the side of your house," Mills said. "It's more analogous to having a cell phone or a router or a cordless phone on the side of your house."

The new meters measure electricity used in homes and businesses, but instead of using gears and dials they use digital technology that records a wealth of information. CMP's meters contain small antennas that transmit data to larger antennas placed on utility poles and eventually on to CMP headquarters in Augusta.

The utility says the meters provide customers with real-time information on electrical usage and in time will allow power suppliers to offer consumers options for variable pricing or time-of-use rates.

Nationwide, smart meters have been installed in an estimated 10 million to 20 million homes, according to the Edison Electric Institute, a Washington, D.C., trade group that represents utilities. More than 65 million homes nationwide are expected to have them by 2020.

In California, one of the first states to see smart meters, a number of municipalities have enacted ordinances delaying their installation.

Two members of the state assembly have asked the California Council on Science & Technology - a nonpartisan, not-for-profit corporation that offers expert advice to the state government on science and technology-related policy issues - to determine whether FCC standards applied to smart meters are sufficient and if there are other possible health risks based on the cumulative impact of radiation exposure.

John Leopold, a member of the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors, said he's never seen an issue generate as many calls, letters and e-mails. The board last month unanimously approved a smart-meter moratorium through year's end.

"I'm concerned about what we don't know," Leopold said. "I haven't seen any scientific information that would lead me to believe there's a problem, but there are significant questions."

CMP, which last month began the two-year job of installing 620,000 meters, says smart meter signals resemble those of cell phones, cordless phones and walkie-talkies, except at lower frequency levels while transmitting for only a few minutes each day.

"We don't believe there's a risk," said CMP spokesman John Carroll.

The meters should also help the environment, he said. CMP estimates the meters will reduce about 2 million miles of driving a year by its meter readers, whose jobs are being eliminated.

But those assurances haven't been enough for dozens of people who have written to Maine Public Advocate Richard Davies, who represents consumers. In response, Davies asked Mills to look into the matter.

Most of the critics are concerned about health risks, Davies said, but a small number are also worried that the system might be penetrated by hackers who could access private information.

"People didn't know this was coming and once the news hit the newspaper, all these people who had health concerns about electromagnetic fields and other sources radiation all of the sudden are concerned that this isn't some distant problem - it's going to be on their house soon," he said.

Subject: Wireless industry warns of 'traffic jam' as more use smart phones, tablet computers

Dear Keith,

In yesterday's Times Colonist the 'linked' article speaks to the need for another spectrum sale by the Canadian govt. to offer more frequencies to accommodate the new iphones and blackberrys. Just coincidentally this will also raise billions of dollars for the federal coffers. The sale could take place as early as this fall.

It is irresponsible for the government to aid the proliferation of wireless technology while the HESA committee is investigating the health hazards associated with these devices. I am circulating this information to many, asking that letters be sent to the HESA committee members asking that this auction sale be halted until the safety of wireless technology be proven.

As was presented to the HESA Committee in April, Safety Code 6 is outdated and in no way provides protection against radiation emitted by any of the wireless technology. No reputable, independent scientist is saying that non-thermal radiation is safe yet Health Canada and Industry Canada continue to allow transmitters to be placed near homes and schools, and new phones, blueberrys, WiFi, etc. to be sold widely, including to children. It is long overdue for responsible politicians to join with the growing numbers of Canadians demanding a biologically based guideline and new wireless technology that can be used without causing harm. I am asking you, as my MP, to represent my interest and the interests of many of those in your riding, to present this issue to the Parliament and demand that this auction be delayed until confirmation of safety is available.

Petition to Parliament

Dear Citizens for Safe Technology:

I have been asked to appear before the Parliamentary Health & Safety Committee to speak to the issue of children being irradiated in schools from Wi-Fi devices.

I would like to present our Petition to Parliament with as many signatures as possible, representing the growing numbers of Canadians who want to err on the side of caution for their children and use hard wired connections to computers in schools. This cautionary approach would also protect teachers and non-teaching staff in schools.

You can help by simply printing out this Petition and carrying it with you as you go about your day, asking those who are concerned about this issue to sign. If you have are able to post the petition in an office or place of business for signatures, this is also a great idea;  some of you may know how to post to Facebook as another method of gathering signatures.

Petitions can be faxed, mailed or collected by me prior to my departure for Ottawa, which could happen any time between October 27 and November 2.

Thank you so much for being part of the solution.

Parents protest school Wi-Fi health problems

Open letter  by Curtis Bennett — Wi-Fi very dangerous in schools.

http://nelsonlife.com/2010/10/02/parents-protest-school-wi-fi-health-problems/1001050.html

"Some things need doing better than they've ever been done before. Some things just need doing. Others don't need doing at all. Know which is which." — source unknown

Electrical conflicts between a very fast frequency and biologic systems that don't function at those frequencies — stop the problem or hell is coming for what we are doing. This is like a sci-fi movie, where humans and the ecosystems that sustain us are irradiated — except this is reality.

It wasn't until watching parents on the news reporting Wi-Fi * or wireless internet making their children sick that we realized the parents have valid concerns that can be qualified electrically. Further discussion with qualified professionals escalated the urgency of our professional opinion.

As interprovincial journeyman electricians, we are trained and certified by governments to meet or exceed required standards. Part of that education is installing electrical cables and communication lines separately to avoid conflicts in frequencies or signals. A primary function of coaxial cable is to protect a signal from electromagnetic interference.

In the important discussion on whether Wi-Fi is dangerous, important technical language was left out of the discussion. Children are not pieces of furniture occupying space. Each child is an unprotected but precise electrical system running at 7.8 Hz. In an industrial or commercial installation, the unprotected 7.8 Hz (cycles per second) would be protected or installed so there was no EMF interference.

Wi-Fi is a 2.4 or 5 GHz frequency which means 2.4 or 5 billion cycles per second. It will interact with a 7.8 Hz electrical system, especially since the 7.8 Hz system isn't insulated or protected. That creates several electrical concerns, including electromagnetic induction changing voltages or currents in the human body. Since eddy currents from a 60 Hz electrical distribution can cause catastrophic electrical failure, what is 2.4 or 5 billion Hz doing to the body? Atoms and molecules would polarize 4.8 or 10 billion times per second, which is the same concept as using a microwave to heat food.

Health Canada reports there is a known heating affect with wireless and "safe" heating standards have been adopted without consideration of the heat being an electrical problem. All heat has a source and the fact that this heat is generated inside the body adds to the urgency. Electricity is a calculated, very accurate science and heat is a byproduct of electrical function or failure.

Our nervous system in the body controls every function in the body, and affecting the communication in the body can have symptoms in any part of the body. This is like changing the voltage or frequencies stamped on your computer — it won't work.

The wireless industry needs to immediately qualify the electrical ramifications of their wireless systems' frequencies interacting with an unprotected 7.8 Hz signal. That response should be immediate as this is established electrical theory.

They also need to qualify the effects of high speed frequencies on ecosytems depending on a magnetic field for navigation. What are the biologic effects of high-speed frequencies causing polarity changes billions of times per second?

Schools and industry can be safe while enjoying important technology advancements. Hard wire the stations as we have done in industry for years — it will be good for the economy and protect people.

As professionals who consult for all industry, including medical education, it is our duty — as with other professionals — to report this for the protection of our children. Our men and women in the military, police, fire, medicine, construction, etc. put their lives on the line with expectations that we keep their children safe at home.

Any industry would be advised to look out for liability because insurers won't pick up a tab for health costs that were created by others. Lawyers didn't equate this to an electrical problem that can be proven. That supports the burden of proof required in legal process.

If the problem isn't dealt with immediately and scientifically, I would be left with no alternative as a government trained professional but to advise parents to keep their children from an unsafe environment. There is no acceptable amount of time to irradiate children — you never know how that will impact different physiology.

As the world's foremost authority on applying infrared technology at molecular levels, we are working on an imaging application so medicine can see the source of heat inside the body with frequency interaction.

Our children are back in school and literally every minute spent in an irradiated environment should be of concern. It is a national security concern if we are irradiating our future and it isn't definable as sustainable under the Auditor General Act.

"Toasted skin syndrome" does not refer to the healthy glow earned by lying on a tranquil beach (slathered responsibly with SPF 50, of course). Really, it's more like a work injury.

Previously the purview of bakers, glass blowers and other artisans who spent the bulk of their days in front of a concentrated heat source, school children and office workers alike are now being diagnosed with the condition because of long-term exposure to heat generated by the laptop computers atop their laps.

Wrote the AP:

In one recent case, a 12-year-old boy developed a sponge-patterned skin discoloration on his left thigh after playing computer games a few hours every day for several months.

"He recognized that the laptop got hot on the left side; however, regardless of that, he did not change its position," Swiss researchers reported in an article published Monday in the journal Pediatrics.

Another case involved a Virginia law student who sought treatment for the mottled discoloration on her leg.

Dr. Kimberley Salkey, who treated the young woman, was stumped until she learned the student spent about six hours a day working with her computer propped on her lap. The temperature underneath registered 125 degrees.

The leg discoloration can be permanent and is thought to be generally harmless, though one dermatology professor reported that "toasted" skin cells looked like those with long-term sun damage.

Theoretically, long-term skin inflammation can increase the risk of some skin cancers, but chances are most laptop users will be fine. Besides, this is an easy problem to avoid: work at a desk!

Hi Everyone

I have been living on a high raw fruit based diet and keeping excellent health. 5 days ago I became very sick. I could not understand why.

The symptoms started with headaches around the temple area and behind the eyes. Nausea and then diarrhea followed. I felt a little dizzy and disorientated. I took some pain killers out of desperation, they made no difference.

The pain and the nausea became progressively worse. It was constant. My energy level plummeted. I felt terrible. I then started to experience mild vision problems. I found it hard to look at a TV, computer screen or be in bright light.

I don't normally suffer from headaches or visual disturbance, so I decided to book an eye test for next week.

I started to look at reasons why this might be happening. I have not changed my diet or lifestyle in any way. 2 days previous to my experiencing these problems, I installed a wireless router provided by my ISP.

After installation, we were experiencing interference on the phone lines. I asked my husband to contact the ISP to see if the problem could be resolved.

During our conversation about the installation of the router, I realised that my symptoms had appeared 2 days after the installation. I wondered if there could be any connection.

I did a little surfing and found that other people had experienced similar symptoms to me, after installing a wireless router. I immediately disconnected the router and reinstalled the modem.

The nausea and headaches behind the eyes disappeared within 3 to four hours. I then experienced a throbbing headache at the back of my head for a couple of hours, then the vision problems disappeared.

12 hours on from disconnection of the router, my vision is fine. I have a clear head and no symptoms of nausea. I still feel a little weak but my energy level is increasing and I'm feeling better by the hour.

I feel that there was a connection between the installation of the WIFI and the symptoms that I experienced. I know that this would probably be difficult to prove. That's not my concern at the moment. I'm just relieved that its no longer operating in my home!

Concerned Parents Protest as Telecom Invades Schools: Government and Industry Denies the Risk

October 2010 Vitality Magazine

by Aliss Terpstra

The growing number of people with sensitivities to electromagnetic fields and microwaves (EMF) is testament to the fact that average exposure allowances from modern telecommunications are too high to be called safe for everyone. And these people are getting tired of hearing a certain phrase: "If it was harmful, the government would never have approved it."

The world according to Health Canada works like this: Selected science from corporations or approval from an unquestioned authority (ie. the World Health Organization) equals safety. Therefore, people who claim to get sick from cell phones, computers, wireless internet and phones emitting microwaves at WHO-approved exposure levels must be suffering from something else – or they are crazy.

In the real world, true evidence of safety is the healthy functioning of the most vulnerable – pregnant women and children – when they are intentionally, unavoidably, or accidentally exposed to microwave radiation at approved levels. Yet an increasing number of people (around 15% according to Dr. Magda Havas), including children all over the world, are showing symptoms of ill health after exposure to WHO-approved levels of microwaves from transmitter towers, wireless internet and phones. The scientific research was there all along to show that this would happen, especially to children, but the science was simply not used by the WHO committee setting the standards. The committee members were from the telecommunications industries.

So, on weight of evidence, it is more likely that the 'approved' levels are unsafe and the craziness lies in the agency doing the approving.

Hazards of Childhood Exposure to Wi-Fi Transmitters & Cell Phones

Recently, children attending 14 schools in the Georgian Bay area communities of Simcoe County developed hypersensitivity illness with headaches, fatigue, brain fog, double vision, auditory confusion, skin rash, nausea and muscle weakness when exposed to the microwaves emitted by recently installed high-power Wi-Fi transmitters inside their schools. And when the kids were away from the schools, these symptoms disappeared. Repeated medical evaluations found no other cause, and no medical treatments proved helpful.

Naturally, parents were deeply concerned. But when they approached school board officials they were essentially told to stop bothering and go away. Health Canada experts supported the Simcoe school board officials, saying Wi-Fi in schools was safe for children.

According to a new book by Devra Davis, PhD, entitled: Disconnect: The truth about cell phone radiation, what the industry has done to hide it, and how to protect your family, there are five billion cell phones now in use around the world. The levels of microwave radiation they emit are approved as safe under these conditions – occasional use; short calls; held more than an inch away from the ear of a large adult male with head size in 90th percentile; and turned off between calls.

But many phones are held right against the thinner, smaller skulls of children whose parents never read that disclaimer. These phones are now zapping brains with the same power level used in radar, brains that have not fully developed the ability to make ethical judgements, calculate speed, or assess risk. This is why we don't let children drive. Yet the Ontario government is considering allowing children to use cell phones in class. ("Heh-heh, at least they won't be driving!" said Premier McGuinty.)

To match the exponential growth in phones used by children, school boards are being persuaded that it's necessary to install Wi-Fi transmitters every few meters in ceilings and walls throughout the entire building to give children a "21st-century learning environment." Wi-Fi is apparently affordable even when school boards are too strapped to buy current textbooks and keep libraries open. Teachers and students aren't hampered by limited access to inconvenient cables and plugs, but can download and upload anything from high resolution video to updated curriculum text, anywhere, anytime. The sales pitch from Cisco is irresistible.

According to the non-industry-funded research on health effects at these power levels, the schools' Cisco Wi-Fi transmitters have overlapping zones of microwaves powerful enough to break DNA strands and cause the brain to release heat-shock proteins into spinal fluid.

In addition to microwaves from a phone held next to the head or in the hands above the lap, the exposed children are constantly absorbing powerful carrier waves with varying pulsed signals intended for thousands of users that are nowhere near the school. Millions of massively electrified antenna towers are on rooftops everywhere to send the signals to phones and wireless internet ports. They are blanketing us with an invisible fog of pulsed frequencies that can prevent our brains from making melatonin at night, at power levels capable of commandeering the heart's own electrical rhythm.

Industry and Government Response to Public Concerns

When the argument is made for using safer alternatives that require less power and emit less radiation (such as fiber optic cable, or less powerful phones that only receive text and voice in a narrow frequency range that does not need a constant carrier wave, or for demand-only with a short delay for power-up), we are told that there are no safety concerns (or carbon emission concerns) that warrant such a level of inconvenience for consumers.

When the plea is made for more research and more protective safety standards for an item that has already escaped from Pandora's Box, made it on to store shelves around the globe, and is now starting to interfere, literally, with the birds and bees, we are told that the science is complete and the regulatory due diligence has been done. This denial is especially swift if the item has become an indispensable and lucrative cash cow for the government. The wireless telecommunications industry is just such a cash cow. The government revenues from transmitter fees and bandwidth access alone are incomprehensibly large – multiple billions of euros in Britain alone.

The industry is also appallingly energy-greedy, sucking up 1% of electricity produced globally to make that electrosmog feeding billions of phones and wireless networks. In 2009, a study from Britain estimated that the telecommunications industry's global energy consumption released 110.7 million tonnes of C02 into the atmosphere. The electricity used to power the towers has the carbon footprint of driving 29 million cars for a year. Each telecom company gets to erect an unlimited number of their own towers, beside competitors, and no laws require them to coordinate transmission needs to reduce power consumption and consumer exposure.

Experts Address Concerned Parents About Dangers of Telecom Pollution

Barrie Trower is a retired physicist, teacher, and champion of the rights of children to live without being damaged by lax government regulation of telecommunication microwave exposures. He now spends his life travelling around the world volunteering his expertise to that end. Trower is a soft-spoken, grandfatherly, unfailingly polite Brit who once worked for the British Secret Service debriefing Cold War spies on their use of stealth microwave weapons. On August 24, he and Dr. Magda Havas addressed a packed hall at the University of Toronto's Health Sciences building.

Trower had come from Britain on invitation by parents from the Simcoe County Safe School Committee. Frustrated with the intransigence of their local school board in addressing concerns about the deteriorating health of their children in 14 different schools with powerful Wi-Fi systems, they had raised funds to bring Trower to Canada in hopes of pressuring the school board to remove Wi-Fi and alert others of the risk to children.

Dr. Magda Havas, a professor at Trent University and an internationally recognized expert on the health effects of EMF radiation, had helped the parents produce a short documentary interviewing some of the affected children and parents. In it, one young boy stated: "It was pretty obvious," when describing how his symptoms abated after the wireless modem was disabled.

Prior to addressing the parents gathered at U of T, Trower had done several interviews for radio, television and newspapers and had also spent ninety minutes with Dr. Arlene King, Ontario's Chief Medical Officer of Health, and her top public health officials, explaining the scientific evidence of biological effects of microwave radiation on children and why the current allowable exposure levels should be lowered.

Trower told the audience of concerned parents that our Canadian government knew years ago that microwave radiation frequencies at the levels now used in wireless internet and phones were harmful. But the levels were allowed anyway for necessary exposures to police and military personnel – and also to "protect future industrial profits." Then, they locked up the research report, with its preface statement admitting collusion to withhold the information from the public, as a classified document for fifty years.

Trower retrieved it with a Freedom of Information Access request because, he said, he knew what it was called and where to look for it.

According to Havas and Trower, no government agency, including the W.H.O., has established a safe level of microwave exposure for children. In fact, Health Canada itself had commissioned a review of the health risks associated with wireless communication devices by The Royal Society of Canada in 1999. This review clearly stated that biological effects and health effects do occur from microwave radiation used by "wireless communication devices" including the specific frequencies which were now transmitted by the school Wi-Fi devices in Simcoe County, and at well below the established "safe" guidelines published by Health Canada in Safety Code 6, based on the thermal effect.

Specifically, the Royal Society of Canada concluded that thermal effects well below the microwaves used by Wi-Fi devices can compromise the integrity of the blood-brain barrier (Sec. 6.6 pg 44). It also concluded that microwave radiation from wireless communication devices at intensities below Health Canada's guidelines can activate ODC salivary enzymes known to promote cancer in humans. (Sec. 6.3.3 pg 41-42)

The Royal Society's report concluded that microwaves at these frequencies and below Health Canada's guidelines disrupt calcium regulation (Sec. 6.2 pg 35) and there is "strong evidence that microwave irradiation produces behavioural and associated biochemical changes at or below the occupational exposure limits in Safety Code 6." (Sec. 6.7 pg 46)

Trower commented, "If we know there are no levels safe for children, and children are everywhere, how can the approved levels of exposure be safe? I have never met a single person who has read the ICNIRP (International Commission for Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection) guideline. It says, "Children, the elderly, and some chronically ill people might have a lower tolerance for one or more forms of microwave exposure." Health Canada uses a safety threshold of 'not more than 1,000 microwatts per cm2.' In 2007 a group of scientists published a recommended safety level in their Bio Initiative Report, which is 'not more than 0.1 microwatts per cm2'."

With some apparent exasperation, the superintendent of education with the Simcoe County School Board said "we can't just shut it down and affect the learning of 50,000 students because someone says it might have health effects."

Let's deconstruct this. Wi-Fi can be bought with taxpayer money, approved and installed without evidence of safety for children whose neurological systems are immature because someone from Cisco (selling Wi-Fi) says it's safe. But it can't be un-installed, even if taxpayers plead and insist; even if a Health-Canada-commissioned Royal Society report warns of serious risk; and even if children actually suffer harm.

It is the view of both Trower and Havis, along with the parents of at-risk children, that exposures must be lowered based on real-time effects and real rights to health protection, not on arguments about fake rights of children to have a "21st century learning environment". Those suffering the harm must be believed and those selling the harm – including the government bureaucrats – need to be held accountable.

Unfortunately, barely a day after Trower had returned to England, Dr. Arlene King's announcement reiterated the Ontario government's belief in the safety of Wi-Fi because of Health Canada's approval. The formal statement of support for Health Canada's authority is now on the Ontario government website. What ought to happen is for Dr. King to believe the children and act in THEIR best interest instead of the interests of the telecommunications industry.

Good grief, have we not learned enough from the shoddy faked science leading to Thalidomide tragedies and the people killed by Vioxx and Prepulsid to know that regulatory approval does not equal safety? Do we not have enough people killed by prescription drugs approved due to glowing reports written by drug companies and handed straight over to Health Canada with a cheque to know that it's time to make Health Canada more accountable?  Does Dr. King actually think Monsanto and Reynolds Tobacco science-for-profit is useful for approving public health safety standards?

Tighten the standards and force manufacturers to comply so those documented biological effects do not occur, instead of discarding the victims and embracing the harmful standard. Trower explained how to do it. Other countries like France and Germany have done it for their children. We should too.

Disconnect – The truth about cell phone radiation, what the industry has done to hide it, and how to protect your family. Devra Davis, PhD, MPH. Dutton 2010.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear HESA Committee members,

Attached is a manual for the Motorola cellphone, model 120e ( http://www.WOW-COM.COM ). Beginning at page 152, there is quite explicit information indicating "The available science does not allow us to conclude that mobile phones are absolutely safe."

The Guide goes on to list several studies showing that wireless phones can have negative consequences for the user's health. For example, "A few studies, however, have suggested that low levels of RF could accelerate the development of cancer in laboratory animals. In one study, mice genetically altered to be predisposed to developing one type of cancer developed more than twice as many cancers when they were exposed to RF energy compared to controls."

In addition to the statements about studies with laboratory animals, the Guide provides statistics about effects of RF on humans. "When tumors did exist in certain locations, however, they were more likely to be on the side of the head where the mobile phone was used." And "that... an association was found between mobile phone use and one rare type of glioma, neuroepithellomatous tumors."

And finally, on page 156, a startling admission: "Under the law, FDA does not review the safety of radiation-emitting consumer products such as mobile phones before marketing, as it does with new drugs or medical devices." Neither does Health Canada nor Industry Canada.

Does not this evidence that the cell phone industry is aware of potential harm, call for, at the very minimum, a public warning in the form of a label attached to every wireless device?

I find it shameful that the industry itself is being more responsible than Health Canada. Where Motorola is at least admitting that evidence exists indicating harm is possible, everyone at Health Canada and the Royal Society (e.g. Dr. Daniel Krewski) continue to maintain the opposite. Quoting Beth Pieterson and Dr. Krewski, "There is no evidence of harm." It is apparent that Health Canada serves no purpose as far as protecting the public is concerned.

Respectfully,

Sharon Noble

Wifi in Schools and the Dangers of non-ionizing radiation: crazed anti-science parents, or a Cold War failure of Normal Science?

September 9, 2010 by northernsong

http://northernsong.wordpress.com/2010/09/09/wifi-in-schools-and-the-dangers-of-non-ionizing-radiation-crazed-anti-science-parents-or-a-cold-war-failure-of-normal-science/

The CBC has run stories on parents groups who are concerned about the possible health effects of WIFI in elementary schools. Individual reports of increased heart rate and headaches, from parents and from the children themselves, are are concerning – but intuitively one wishes to trust Health Canada who dismiss the complaints as subjective. The peer reviewed literature, according to Health Canada, overwhelmingly confirms that the thermal effects of WIFI are negligible, and that no causal relation has been found between those thermal effects and any health problems.

The fact that scientists remain opposed to a scientific consensus is not a reason to distrust the consensus - if this were true, the presence of a single reputable climate denier in the peer reviewed literature would be a reason to refrain from belief in global warming. However, there are two reasons why the wifi case is different from climate denial. First: the precautionary principle runs in the opposite direction – whereas a slight doubt that human Co2 output will threaten the survival of the species is not a good reason to take action to stop Co2 emissions, a significant doubt that wifi causes health problems in children is not a good reason to take cheap and easy action to limit children's exposure to wifi. Second, there is a structural bias behind Health Canada's appraisal of the research into the effects of small levels of microwave radiation. This surprising claim comes from a study by Leo P. Inglis, surveyed here by Magda Havas, surveying the literature on microwave radiation's health effects:

"In the U.S., the thermal effects are generally believed to be the only ones of significance; other contentions are usually dismissed as lacking a provable basis.  In the USSR, non-thermal effects are considered the most significant and are overwhelmingly the ones most studied."

This indicates a structural difference between scientific assumptions in US and USSR have swayed the directions of research, determined which studies got funding, what students took interest in, etc… This claim undercuts Health Canada's statements which concern only the thermal effects of microwave radiation – if non thermal effects exist, Health Canada is not even looking for them.

Significant differences in the direction of scientific research between closed off communities are expected by constructivists like Kuhn, who believes that the basic assumptions of a scientific community are determined by the appearance of fruitfulness in future research rather than through normal scientific inquiry itself. In the past I have taken interest in Scientific research done under the Nazi regime, and research done in secrecy for the US military during the cold war. Such research programs demonstrate the power of dollars over freedom – how a research program, even when the researchers are cut off from their peers – can make tremendous strides if given a set of goals and unlimited resources. This gulf between Soviet and American research is an example of the opposite, and much less controversial hypothesis: that a lack of democracy is harmful for scientific research. The lack of proper collaboration between American and Soviet researchers into the effects of microwave radiation allowed Soviet research to ignore the importance of thermal effects, whereas the converse allowed US scientists and regulators to ignore the importance of non-thermal effects.

So, while the Bio-Initiative report is rejected by Health Canada as not being in conformity with the scientific consensus, it might not be rejected by Health Moscow. For example, whereas in 2008 and 2009 Health Canada continued to hold that there was no evidence that cell phone use could have any health effects, the Russian Naitonal Committee on non-ionizing ratiation protection made this statement about risks posed to children's health by cell phone radiation (similar to WIFI, but much stronger)

Potential risk for the children's health is very high:

─ the absorption of the electromagnetic energy in a child's head is considerably higher than that in

the head of an adult (children's brain has higher conductivity, smaller size, thin skull bones,

smaller distance from the antenna etc.);

─ children's organism has more sensitivity to the EMF, than the adult's;

─ children's brain has higher sensitivity to the accumulation of the adverse effects under

conditions of chronic exposure to the EMF;

─ EMF affects the formation of the process of the higher nervous activity;

─ today's children will spend essentially longer time using mobile phones, than today's adults will.

Health Canada continues to hold that the risks from cell phone use do not include any of the risks advised by Russian, British, German, Belgian, Israeli, and Indian health agencies.

The basic question boils down to this: is it up to skeptics to prove that electronic devices are unsafe, or is it up to corporations trying to expand their markets by creating new needs to prove they are safe? If you ask Health Canada – the onus is on scientists to prove that a risk can be statistically proven, i.e. people must already have been hurt by the product. In other words – should the precautionary principle be applied to new electronic devices as it is to new medicine?

Dairy in Wisconsin

Is new technology going to end dairy farming in the United States and Canada?

During a recent trip to Wisconsin, Peter Webb, nutritionist, with 20 years of experience in finding solutions for electro pollution, surveyed 4 farms per day, altogether 12 herds, ranging from 200 to 600 milking cows, at the request of farmers, electricians, veterinarians and bankers.

The problem is sick cows. The average cull rate is 45% annually with 29 to 50 lbs of milk per day. In the community of Eden there were 40 wind turbines and many cellular and other radiofrequency and microwave towers.

There is one biological phenomenon that is a mystery: what causes these cows to go into self preservation mode whereby milk production drops. Yet, when the electro pollution is mitigated, they will not increase milk production back to their genetic potential. It is as if a switch is turned "off" in their bodies.

Some farmers clear all the damaged animals out and replace them with first calf heifers. This seems to indicate a method way to bring them back to normal milk production range, especially with vitamin supplements.

Ground current was a major problem. One farmer had the power company disconnect the electricity; and he installed a portable generator at the cost of $12,000 per month.

The first week's milk production increased by 10 lbs per cow. When the ground current returned, production went down. This farmer reports that he lost $3 million dollars.

Cellular, radar towers and many satellite dishes also affect the animals: mostly with feet problems as well as with behaviour, whereby they refused to lay at one end or the other of barns, as well as to flow through the milking parlour. The effect of electro-pollution is noticeable in soils and in crops, with tighter soil and reduced yields. Most farms had a copper wire run around the buildings. On one structure, the electrician ran a wire around the feed bunks – resulting with a jump of 9 lbs of milk production; so it seems that ground current is having a negative effect on stored feed. These farmers have spent $60,000 to $200,000 on electrical solutions that have made no difference and are ready to quit the dairy industry.

Requests for help are coming from Illinois, Michigan, Missouri and Pennsylvania.  Similar problems are showing up in Ontario. One 50-cowherd in Ontario had a high producing herd and when a solar farm went on line nearby milk production dropped 400lbs per day!

---------------------------------------------------

Andrew and others,

What you are describing has been documented for decades on dairy farms with ground current problems.  Dave Colling is measuring the same thing (ground current and dirty power) around wind turbines in Ontario.  Dave Stetzer and Don Hillman and Martin Graham have been providing expert testimony on this for decades in both the US and Canada.  Lee Montgomery in Ontario has been fighting this as well for far too long.

We have made slight progress in Ontario that started with a Private Members Bill (Maria Van Bommel) and resulted in a reduction in the amount of ground voltage that is considered "safe" but it has yet to be applied to Ontario farms.  Still not where it should be but getting closer.

Not only does this energy affect cows, but studies show it has the same effect on hogs and sadly on people!

The radiation from wireless technology can flow along the ground and become entrenched on metal objects.  Solar farms and Wind farms produce dirty power and ground current if not properly constructed with appropriate means to provide good power quality.  The utility isn't happy with the dirty power either.  Unfortunately, this is a lose:lose:lose situation!

Man fighting dirty electricity war

Digby Hildreth | 1st October 2010

http://www.northernstar.com.au/story/2010/10/01/dirty-electricity-war-stephen-hall/

STEPHEN HALL is visiting Northern Rivers to educate people about the dangers of electric pollution.

Stephen Hall, from Sydney, with some Stetzerizer 'dirty electricity' filters, which he uses to protect buildings from the dangerous emissions.

STEPHEN HALL crackles with energy when he talks.

Today, he's the picture of clear-eyed good health, but not so many years ago he was at death's door from multiple sclerosis, with pieces of plaque the size of 50-cent pieces on his brain.

The condition was allegedly caused by what has been labelled 'dirty electricity' – aninsidious form of pollution that most of us are exposed to each day," Mr Hall claims.

He was visiting the Northern Rivers from Sydney this week to attend talks on the subject in Byron Bay and to test people's homes for electrical pollution.

'Dirty electricity' is regarded as high frequency voltage that enters our buildings and homes by piggybacking on low frequency currents, Mr Hall said.

"The AC pulsing current is designed to run to our buildings from the utilities and back again at 50 times a second," he said.

"But unfortunately, it's not 50 times, it's 2000 times, or even more, so we get this spiking and surging riding on the 50Hz current.

"And when the switching systems used by many modern electronic devices convert it from AC to DC, they take bytes out of the electrical sine wave, then put them back on to the electrical current as dirty electricity."

As well as running around the walls, ceilings and under the floors of a building, 'dirty electricity' is claimed to emanate from everyday devices in the form of electromagnetic radiation, whose electrons enter the body and oscillate with the cells and cause damage to our immune systems.

Mr Hall links electrical pollution with a wide range of health problems in people with 'electrical hyper-sensitivity', including chronic fatigue, insomnia, depression and headaches, and many forms of cancer.

"There is a lot of research to indicate that this is now at plague proportions, and is the precursor to a lot of cancers," he said.

Some commentators believe it is 'the missing link' that explains cancer clusters.

Mr Hall was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2001 after large lesions were detected on his brain and central nervous system.

"My digestive system and bowel function broke down and was getting worse," he said.

He could barely walk and feared he was going to die from the degenerative disease.

After reading about a possible link between electromagnetic radiation and MS, he had his apartment tested for high-frequency energy.

The levels were through the roof.

He installed a number of electricity filters throughout his home and his condition improved immediately.

"Today, my MS is under control and the plaques have diminished in size and prominence." he said.

Government accused of manipulating science news

http://icordless.com/cordless-videos/panasonic-kx-tg9392-cordless-phone-goes-dead-near-iphone-or-gsm-cellphone/

Watch this short (1 minute) video of how an iPhone affects a Panasonic  cordless phone.  Showing that one type of technology can interfere  with another type of technology is known as EMI or electromagnetic  interference and is much easier to demonstrate than the effect these  phones have on brains cells or other cells in the body.

We have evidence that brain waves change when the head is exposed to  the radiation from a cell phone.  This is another type of EMI but with  biological receptors affected instead of electronic receptors.

Imagine what would happen if one brain cell died every time your cell phone received or sent a message!  Yes we have a lot of brain cells  and we don't use them all—that's for certain--but they don't regenerate or at least they don't regenerate quickly.  How many can  you afford to lose?  And how many can your children and grandchildren  afford to lose?

Ontario Health Study

"If there are no questions about exposure and proximity to electromagnetic fields, it may be a waste of money. There is enough conflicting science in this area to include this potential health risk.

If governmental officials are so convinced of the "weight" of industry science that says there is no harm, why not take this opportunity to independently verify those conclusions?"

INCREASE of childhood cancers, SMOG IN ACCUSATION

(AGI) - Rome, September 28 - Not only allergies and respiratory diseases, but also increase in leukemia and cancer, especially in the first year of life, and neuro-psychological disorders have as their prime suspect in the environment and particularly the changes undergone by the fetus in utero. The Societa 'Italian Pediatrics takes the field with a series of environmental initiatives, also in view of the National Congress, scheduled for October 20 to 23 in Rome, where European and national experts will discuss this issue, including Ernesto Burgio, Coordinator of the Scientific Committee of ISDE (International Society of Doctors for Environment) and Dominique Belpomme President ARTAC (Association de Recherche Therapeutique Anti-Cancereuse). The data does not leave many doubts in the last 20 years in Europe and 'recorded an increase of 1, 2% annually of childhood cancer, this rate in Italy and' equal to 2%, nearly double that of the United States and rest of Europe. The highest increase 'has consistently among children under one year of age' (+ 3.2%) and some cancers (lymphomas: + 4.6%, central nervous system tumors: + 2.0%); and 'therefore likely to contribute to tumorigenesis or gamete maternal exposure to toxic substances. It's not 'more' comforting chapter of neuro-psychological. That the diffusion of molecules in a camouflage, heavy metals and other pollutants can interfere heavily on the development of neuro-endocrine embryo, fetal and child risk of producing severe damage and 'a figure that emerges from hundreds of scientific studies. So much so that a few years ago a study published in the Lancet, signed by two prestigious researchers from Harvard School of Health Pubblic raised forcefully the issue of "silent pandemic" of neuro-psychological damage that would be more widespread indifference, now affecting 10% of children. "Our country, in all its aspects, politics, pediatricians, schools, families, must become more 'aware of environmental risks to the health of children," said Alberto Ugazio, President of the Societa' of Italian Pediatrics. "Soon we will start training courses throughout the country turned to pediatricians for the advancement of pediatric diseases linked to the environment, but we think it important to act on education from a very 'young age': ask the Minister Gelmini to introduce sin from elementary school, an hour of environmental education. Encouraging news on the CFL front

Good afternoon, all.

Finally some encouraging news on the CFL front. Three Representatives have introduced H.R.6144 which would repeal the ban on incandescent bulbs.

Our website, http://www.cflimpact.com/
has a news story on the bill.  It is interesting to note that one of the sponsors is an M.D. from Texas.

Rep. Joe Barton, also from Texas, has a story about the bill on his website:

http://joebarton.house.gov/NewsRoom.aspx?FormMode=Detail&ID=617

While (MI) Sen. Levin's office took a "shot" at discussing this with the EPA, the EPA just "stiffed" them with a non-responsive "response".

With the likelihood of a major change in the makeup of the House of Representatives the multitudes, who are adversely impacted by CFLs, may just find some Hope for Change in this ill-conceived ban on incandescent bulbs.

Thank you, all, for your support.
