Get smart: Smart meters to hike Hydro bills

http://www.theprovince.com/technology/smart+Smart+meters+hike+Hydro+bills/4653173/story.html

By Michael Smyth, The Province April 21, 2011

There are many excellent reasons to spend $1 billion to install "smart meters" in every home in the province, according to B.C. Hydro — and one of them is NOT to jack up your electricity bill.

And if you believe that, I've got some shares in a proposed downtown casino I can sell you — cheap!

Never mind the main reason smart meters were invented — and why they're being installed in so many provinces and states — is so governments can implement "time of use" billing.

Unlike existing "dumb meters," smart meters will instantly know exactly how much electricity you use and when you use it. That allows governments and utilities to jack up the rate charged on power consumed during "peak periods," such as in the evening when people (a.k.a. "sitting ducks") are watching TV, making dinner and doing laundry.

But Hydro insists time-of-use billing is not being considered in B.C. At least not yet. (Please resist the urge to laugh, cry or barf at this point and keep reading.)

Hydro says smart meters are being installed for other reasons — such as stopping nasty marijuana growers from stealing electricity, for example.

Marijuana grow-ops consume huge amounts of electricity to power high-wattage lamps, water pumps, dehumidifiers, security systems and other equipment. The growers often steal the electricity, by tampering with the dumb meters, or diverting power from the main supply line.

How much power are marijuana growers stealing?

"Over $100 million a year," Hydro official Bob Herriman told the Vancouver Sun last week, adding that amount has been increasing over the last few years.

I'll say. It wasn't that long ago that Hydro said much less power was being stolen to power grow-ops.

"We know that grow-ops are a problem in British Columbia — our estimate is in the $12-million range," Hydro official Bev Van Ruyven told the B.C. Utilities Commission in 2004.

OK, that was seven years ago. But, as late as last August, Hydro was saying the amount of electricity theft was $30 million a year.

And, in February, a Hydro official told the B.C. Utilities Commission that annual electricity losses had been "relatively constant for many years," not rising dramatically.

But, now that Hydro wants to install smart meters, those nasty marijuana growers are suddenly stealing more than $100 million worth of power a year.

Hmm, what a suspiciously round number. A cynical type might think Hydro was inflating the grow-op losses as an excuse to bring in smart meters, which they say will help them catch those dirty pot-growing power thieves.

But I'll cut Hydro some slack and believe them. I bet those pot growers are ripping us off big time, no matter what the real number is.

But I also believe this: Smart meters are all about time-of-use billing and jacking up your electricity bill. If you believe anything else, you're smoking something funny.

A few have no doubts about smart meters' ill effects

By John Richardson jrichardson@mainetoday.com
Staff Writer March 6, 2011

http://www.onlinesentinel.com/news/health-concernscontinue-to-circle-cmp-smart-meters_2011-03-05.html

Julie Tupper's home is a wireless-free zone.

"I used to have wireless in the house (for computer Interent service) and I knew something strange was going on. I had it pulled out, and the difference was night and day," she said.

The joint pain and other aches she had struggled with disappeared, she said. Soon the cordless phone was gone, too, and the microwave retired. "I (got) all wireless out of my home, because I knew it was causing problems for me."

Tupper, of South Portland, is one of an unknown number of Mainers who consider themselves especially sensitive to the invisible radio frequency waves sent out by wireless communication devices. Some, like Tupper, have turned their homes into safe havens where they can retreat, at least to some degree, from the ubiquitous radio waves floating around most offices, homes and residential neighborhoods.

Now, they say, they also are feeling the effects of new wireless electrical meters -- smart meters -- that Central Maine Power Co. is installing on homes in their neighborhoods. Some say symptoms such as heart palpatations and sleeplessness were bad enough to force them out of their homes until the meters could be removed temporarily.

Tupper and nine others filed a complaint with the Maine Public Utilities Commission in late February. It is the sixth petition seeking to suspend CMP's smart meter changeover or force the company to offer an alternative to customers who don't want the devices on their homes for a variety of reasons.

Maine, followed closely by California, is on track to become the first state to decide whether homeowners have a right to reject the new generation of electricity meters.

"There are utilities all across the country facing this or similar questions," said John Carroll, spokesman for CMP. "We are ahead of everybody."

The newest petition is the first one in Maine to focus exclusively on the health issue. It also raises the question of whether customers have a right to keep entire neighborhoods, or communities, free of smart meters and the wireless signals they send.

Health experts and government agencies say there is no scientific proof that the technology has anything to with joint pains, headaches, dizziness, sleeplessness and other symptoms reported by the 10 Mainers who signed the petition, or by residents in other states who are reporting similar reactions. There also is no conclusive proof that the radio frequency waves are not causing health effects and the question deserves more study, they say.

For CMP, unproven health concerns are not enough to stall new technology that promises to improve the efficiency of the grid and cut costs for the company and its ratepayers.

"There does not appear to be a link that is going to make these people sick," Carroll said. "The signals from these meters are very, very low-powered." Also, an average meter will send signals only a total of 4.4 seconds during a day, he said.

Those who insist they can feel the health effects, however, say they don't want to be part of any smart-meter experiment.

"You try to maintain your home as a place where you can get away from it," Tupper said. "People are saying, 'Oh, this isn't real.' This is real. People are getting sick. ... Someone like me is the canary in the coal mine."

Tupper said she's never been able to hold a cell phone to her head without a sharp headache, and can get heart palpatations or dizziness when driving near cell towers. "It's like an allergy. You might not be allergic to mold, but somebody else is," she said.

CMP agreed to bypass Tupper's home, at least until the PUC complaints are resolved, but she can feel the signals from her neighbors' meters, she said. "I was sitting watching TV and I said to my husband, 'Oh, my god. They're here. I can feel it,' " she said. "It was kind of a jolting sensation."

While her husband doesn't feel the radio waves, she said, she can't go on one side of her property because it's too close to her neighbor's smart meter.

"It would be great if we could say for a 250-foot surrounding area, no smart meters," she said, but added, "What we want to do now is to focus on trying to create a safe haven for ourselves in our homes."

Gregg Levey, another petitioner, said CMP put a smart meter on the outside of his Falmouth home in December.

"About three or four days after this thing was put in, I just started tossing and turning at night, like major insomnia, and I had never had insomnia before," he said.

Levey, unlike Conroy, made the connection after he mentioned his sleeplessness to a friend who is a smart-meter opponent. "She told me insomnia is the No. 1 symptom," he said.

The Leveys called CMP in early January and, within a day, the company put the old analog meter back on the house.

"Once it was taken out and I started to sleep more, it very much convinced me that this is what was doing it. It was pretty clear," Levey said. "It's my home, and I shoud be able to make the choice."

Gregg Levey's wife, Anat, said she felt the effects, too.

"With me, it was every time I walked toward the house where the meter was, which happens to be (outside) our kitchen, I got really, really dizzy," she said. "Ever since they removed it, I don't get that dizziness anymore."

Nancy Burns, a petitioner from Windham, said she's dealt with all kinds of allergies and environmental sensitivies her whole life.

"Microwaves I don't use anymore. With TVs, I try to sit back a good distance," said Burns, who lives in Windham. "I knew the meter would probably be bad for me, but I didn't object when they installed it, because I didn't know I could object."

CMP installed a smart meter on her home in December, she said.

"At first I started being dizzy when getting up out of bed. I didn't think anything of it," she said. "It gradually got worse and worse."

She had back pain, headaches, confusion and panic attacks, she said. She got relief by sleeping in her car and then in a motel for a few nights before asking CMP to remove the meter, she said.

"I can't live with it; I know that," she said. "It's hard to tell these things to people because they don't believe you."

Petitioners said their physicians have been supportive, although few in the medical community have publicly validated the health concerns.

One physician based in Scarborough, Stephen Kirsch, wrote a letter to the PUC last month saying further investigation of the health effects is needed.

"I have been treating one of my patients that I believe has suffered deleterious effects of smart meter installation in her community of South Portland," Kirsch wrote. He did not identify the patient and did not respond to an interview request last week.

"She has recovered after being hospitalized and returning to her daughter's home," he wrote. "She is fearful and unwilling to return to her home. Futhermore, my patient, her daughter and I are concerned that smart meters may be installed around and at her current safe haven in Scarborough."

Officially, there is no evidence that the waves coming from smart meters -- or other common wireless devices, for that matter -- are affecting the health of people around them, according to state and federal health and regulatory agencies.

The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention presented the PUC in November with a review of government research in the United States and other countries.

"Our review of these agency assessments and studies do not indicate any consistent or convincing evidence to support a concern for health effects, ..." the agency said. It also found no evidence of a link to "symptoms that have been described as electromagnectic sensitivity."

A more detailed study by the California Council on Science and Technology in January came to the same conclusion, saying smart meters result in smaller levels of radio frequency exposure than cell phones and microwave ovens.

"To date, scientific studies have not identified or confirmed negative health effects," it said.

The reviews also say more research is needed to identify, or rule out, health effects at various levels of exposure.

So far, the PUC has sidestepped the health issue. In response to previous complaints, it deferred to the Federal Communications Commission, which sets safety standards for wireless transmissions and has deemed the meters to be well within safety limits.

"The commission does not have the institutional expertise regarding potential RF health impacts," the PUC wrote in a recent filing.

It's unclear wether the new petition will force the PUC to examine the issue.

CMP is sure to argue that the complaint be dismissed. It already has replied to earlier complaints with testimony from a scientific expert who argued there is no proof of any health effects from the meters or similar sources of radio frequency waves.

Carroll, the CMP spokesman, said the argument by Tupper and others that they are being affected by their neighbors' smart meters raises other issues for the company and the smart meter project.

He said the level coming from neighboring homes is similar to the levels given off by the human body. Also, he said, homeowners shouldn't have to get their neighbors' permission to have a smart meter.

"If you're living in a neighborhood, you're within the field of your neighbor's cell phone or your neighbor's wi-fi router," Carroll said. "No one has ever exercized a property right that says your radio signal is trespassing on my property. Under that scenario, you could go over after WBLM radio."

So far, CMP has installed about 137,000 smart meters. About 3,000 households have opted out while the issue is pending before the PUC, Carroll said.

CMP and some lead complainants have met to discuss a settlement of the smart meter dispute. One possible resolution could give customers a choice to opt out -- if they agree to pay a higher fee for wireless-free meters.

However, allowing customers simply to opt out would jeopardize the benefits of the entire project, as well as the $96 million in federal funds for the two-year smart-meter project. "That could erode the effectiveness and efficiency of the system," Carroll said.

Microwave Radiation Affects the Heart

March 7, 2011.

During the past year I have become increasingly interested in the effects of microwave radiation on the heart. This interest is based on a number of observations.

Some people who are electrically sensitive complain that they have a rapid or irregular heart beat and feel chest pressure or pain (Eltiti, 2007). We conducted a "proof of concept" study to determine if we could measure heart rate changes caused by microwave radiation with real-time monitoring. We found that some individuals developed a rapid or an irregular heart beat when exposed to pulsed microwaves (from a cordless phone base station) at levels considered safe by the WHO, FCC, and Health Canada (Havas et al. 2010).

During the past year I have heard stories that children who attend schools with WiFi are complaining of a racing heart while in school (link to video). Two of these students in the Barrie area (Canada) were given heart monitors to wear and one young girl was scheduled for heart surgery because her cardiologist couldn't figure out what was wrong. Her parents postponed the operation, removed the WiFi in their home, and her symptoms did not return during the summer when she wasn't attending school.

WIRELESS WORRIES

Cellphones make Christel Martin sick.

They make her head spin. Her vision blurs. Her body starts to shut down. But cellphones aren't the only culprit. There are Wi-Fi units, cell towers, cordless phones and other electrical devices all making her ill.

She has to get away from the electromagnetic radiation, but the technology saturates today's world and it's a daunting mission to escape.

"I couldn't even go in my home office – it was just like going into this cloud," said Martin. "We're polluting ourselves to death and the medical establishment hasn't got a clue."

Martin has electrical hypersensitivity, also referred to as electrosensitivity. People with the condition can experience headaches, sleeping problems, dizzy spells, difficulty focusing and problems with their short-term memory.

For years, Martin struggled with her condition, visiting several doctors but receiving no diagnosis until last year.

The causes of her condition are controversial.

Health Canada recognizes the disorder, but says there is no scientific evidence symptoms are caused by exposure to electromagnetic fields.

Nanaimo physician John Cline, who is also certified by the International Board of Clinical Metal Toxicology, says many patients he treats have electrosensitivity caused by electrical devices or 'dirty' electricity in their homes. After removing devices such as cordless phones, many of his patients see dramatic health improvements.

He said people who have more metals or chemicals in their bodies are more susceptible, adding that it's foolhardy to rush forward with technology when there is little information about the health effects.

"We go through our daily lives and don't give a thought about this electromagnetic smog we are in," said Cline. "As a society, we'll pay a hefty price for using the technology without doing the research first."

A recent study – Biological Effects from Exposure to Electromagnetic Radiation Emitted by Cell Tower Base Stations and Other Antenna Rays, published by the National Research Council's Environmental Reviews, a peer-reviewed science publication – discusses health effects of electromagnetic fields and radiation by examining earlier studies.

The researchers – Blake Levitt and Henry Lai – argue there are gaps in knowledge because many studies only examine short-term exposure. They suggest there isn't enough information about long-term exposure and caution is warranted before expanding infrastructure.

Studies on long-term effects are contradictory – some found increased health effects, such as increased cancer rates, while others found none.

It's unclear how many are affected by EHS, but the World Health Organization suggests it's a few out of every million. Self-help groups, however, report a much higher prevalence.

Health Canada created radio frequency energy safety guidelines to govern exposure levels in 1979. It states that if exposures remain below the guides, with limits based on temperature increases, there is no danger.

But Katharina Gustavs, an EMF consultant in Sooke, says the health guidelines only protect people from burns and heat caused by devices, not damage at the cellular level, which could increase cancer risks.

"The big health debate is about the non-thermal effects, because they are not as acute or obvious," said Gustavs.

She equates the rollout of wireless technologies with the use of chemical pesticides. Pesticides entered the water supply and food chain, but now there is a movement away from their use because of the health effects and environmental impacts.

The House of Commons Standing Committee on Health recently released a report on the potential impacts of radio frequency electromagnetic radiation, from sources such as Wi-Fi, and recommends the Government of Canada fund long-term studies examining the potential health impacts of exposure.

Numerous grassroots groups around the country have contacted MPs, provincial elected representatives and school boards, asking for a moratorium on Wi-Fi until more comprehensive studies can be completed, and for electromagnetic hypersensitivity to be recognized as a medical ailment.

Health Canada says there is no corresponding evidence that supports the assertion that Wi-Fi is harmful and there is no conclusive evidence of long-term or cumulative health risks from exposure to low-intensity radio frequency energy.

People should approach the issue of wireless technology by placing trust in recognized science, said Marc Choma, director of communication for the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association, which represents about 200 companies, including cellphone companies, manufacturers and other affiliates.

Choma said there are studies raising concerns, but cautions they might not be from credible sources and people should consult recognized and credible scientific sources such as Health Canada and the World Health Organization.

Those organizations have found there aren't safety concerns as long as the devices are used within the established safety guidelines.

"The overwhelming evidence is they're not seeing any causes for concerns," said Choma.

Magda Havas, an associate professor of environmental studies at Trent University, in Ontario, said she worries about the long-term effects on human health.

"They are being absolutely irresponsible and the question is why are they not protecting the health of Canadians," said Havas regarding Health Canada.

Havas, who has conducted research on the health effects of non-ionizing electromagnetic energy at low frequencies for the past 15 years, said she's particularly worried about children, whose developing bodies are more susceptible.

Her research in Ontario schools found cases of children developing irregular heart rates. When the children stopped going to schools with Wi-Fi or parents took Wi-Fi out of the home, the heart rates returned to normal.

"I'm concerned we're going to have one child that will die because of what it's doing to their heart and that's when we'll take this seriously," Havas said.

After her diagnosis with Dr. Cline, Martin finally had a starting point to manage her ailments. She contacted Chris Anderson, an electromagnetic radiation assessment consultant from Salt Spring Island, who measured her home for electromagnetic fields and helped identify where more fields were generated.

"There is no reason our homes should be turned into living, writhing torture chambers for people with electrosensitivity," said Anderson.

Martin has since rearranged her home to avoid spending time in high electromagnetic areas and regularly uses a Gauss metre, which measures electromagnetic fields.

Letter of concern about Stratford smart meters / EMF Omega News

W.E.E.P. News

Wireless Electrical and Electromagnetic Pollution News

12 December 2010

Vanevery Way,

Stratford, Ontario

N5A 8C1

December 7, 2010

Mr. Bill Zehr

President, Festival Hydro

187 Erie St

Stratford, Ontario

N5A 6T5

Dear Mr. Zehr,

Thank you for your letter dated November 15th, 2010 stating that Festival Hydro is nearing the completion of the mandated deployment of smart meters and that the company intends to comply with the regulations by completing 100% of the installations. I am very concerned about a smart meter being installed on my house because it could seriously harm my health and threaten my life. At present, I avoid electro magnetic radiation whenever possible. I have been diligent to ensure that there is no wireless equipment that emits microwave radiation in my house or on my property, and I insist that you do not install this type of device on my electrical system.

For most of the last two years, I have been able to enjoy walking around Stratford. The entire environment changed for the worse, however, when the smart meters were installed. Smart meters emit strong bursts of microwave radiation, and I can often feel the effects of them when I am just walking down the street. It is like a push against my chest, which partially winds me. Instead of feeling invigorated after a walk, I now often feel soreness in my chest and slight nausea.

In the last few months, since smart meters and Wi Fi were installed in the area around my home, I have already noticed a decline in my overall health. In general, I have had difficulties sleeping, tinnitus has become much worse, and I have developed a heart problem that could be life threatening. There are strong reasons to believe that strong bursts of microwave radiation from smart meters may be the cause of these problems. I have also noticed that I am experiencing headaches more frequently and my breathing sometimes becomes more difficult when I am exposed to strong microwave radiation. My sensitivity to electro magnetic radiation has also become noticeably worse. By complete contrast, I am fit, energetic, and relatively healthy for my age when I am not exposed to microwave radiation.

In the past, I have taken part in "blind" scientific testing to measure the effects of microwave radiation. The video link below shows the type of effect it has on my heart: http://www.magdahavas.com/2010/10/21/new-study-radiation-from-cordless-phone-base-station-affects-the-heart/ . I am a subject whose heart rate changes dramatically when exposed to the cordless phone.

The next video, featured on Global television, was filmed while I was participating in a blind test. It shows how microwave radiation from a Wi Fi router causes significant changes to the way my heart functions: http://www.youtube.com/safeschool#p/u/3/KN7VetsCR2I .

Festival Hydro smart meters emit the same type of microwave radiation as the cordless telephones, but in very strong bursts. Because of those intense spikes, smart meters are even more likely to affect the heart.

At present, my home is somewhat shielded from direct radiation from smart meters as the meters on the houses on either side of mine are on the walls farthest from my house. I still feel the effects of radiation from meters on the houses across the road, however, and from others in the vicinity. If I sit on my front porch, I can clearly measure sharp bursts of radiation being emitted by the meters in my neighbourhood. The additional radiation of my property causes fatigue and spoils the use and enjoyment of my home.

If you install a smart meter on my home, I will be exposed to radiation that is far more powerful and more dangerous than that to which I am currently exposed. I will probably be highly exposed in my garage and on the west side of my property. There is also a strong possibility, based on the testing that I have done on other homes with smart meter problems, that the microwave radiation will penetrate the walls and may send spikes on the electrical system throughout my home, causing further serious health problems for me.

If Festival Hydro or the Ontario Government insists on installing a dangerous device that is likely to cause serious harm to me, I will be forced to protect my health and my home, just as every Canadian citizen has a right to do. I have already been driven from my previous home, where I suffered serious illness and cancer due to exposure to dangerous amounts of electro magnetic pollution. My wife and I lived in temporary accommodation for several years, at much expense, to protect my health. As a consequence of this experience, I have spent the last seven years learning about the dangers of electro magnetic radiation and have collected significant evidence about the harm that microwave radiation can cause to people, animals, birds, and the environment.

When I came to Stratford, I chose a site for our home that is as far as possible from cell phone antennas so that I could avoid most radiation. During the building process, we incurred extra expenses by insisting on materials that would provide extra protection. We also insisted on better quality wiring for our home, and we added special switches to keep internal electro magnetic fields at the lowest level. As stated previously, there are no wireless devices in this home. It is a very "EMF" safe home, and I have taken all reasonable precautions that will allow me to live as safely as possible, without further harm.

My review of the Canadian Criminal Code indicates that subjecting a person to microwave radiation that causes actual harm can be interpreted as unwanted force, and that the offence of Assault Causing Bodily Harm would apply to any person involved in a situation that causes me harm. You are already aware that I suffer from electro hyper-sensitivity because I have advised you of this fact in previous correspondence. I have also shown Festival Hydro Manager, Mr. Ken Levy, a medical report that indicates that I have recently started having heart problems. If microwave radiation from the smart meters installed by Festival Hydro were to cause my death, it could be considered a homicide and anyone involved in the situation, including you, may face serious criminal charges.

You have previously been made aware of how dangerous the smart meter program is from the documents that I provided to both Festival Hydro and Stratford City Council. After being notified about the dangers, I assume that you reviewed the information and also conducted your own research into the heath effects of microwave radiation.

A question that you must ask is what sort of repercussion you may suffer from the Ontario Government if you do not install a smart meter on my home. I doubt if there would be any repercussion, and, even if there were, you could easily defend your position with the evidence that I have already provided to you showing harm to human health caused by microwave radiation. On the other hand, if Festival Hydro installs a smart meter on my home and it further adversely affects my health, you may face serious criminal charges, civil litigation, and civil rights complaints. Under these circumstances, Festival Hydro would be grossly irresponsible to install a smart meter on my home.

When I first warned you about the potential harm and adverse health effects of smart meters, I had limited knowledge of how they operate, how strong the radiation would be, and how often the meters would send bursts of microwave radiation. Since then, I have seen several smart meters and measured their radiation, and I have learned much more about them. I have collected a significant amount of scientific research and evidence to show how dangerous these meters are. They are far worse and more dangerous than I ever could have anticipated.

I ask that you review all of the information listed below and attached to this message. In addition, please provide the information to the Festival Hydro Board of Directors.

I also request that you inquire of Premier McGuinty and the Ontario Government regarding the spirit and purpose of the smart meter legislation, and whether it was their intention to harm the health and endanger the lives of Ontario citizens. In so doing, please provide the Premier with all of the same evidence that I have provided to you. Finally, I request that you inquire whether the government would exempt me and other citizens who are made ill by microwave radiation from having smart meters on their property.

Yours sincerely,

Martin Weatherall

POWERLESS!

As a sufferer of electro hypersensitivity, any increase in unseen traffic through the airwaves makes her skin burn.

Putting it simply, Margaret says she's allergic to electricity.

But mobile phone waves and broadband wireless networks all combine to make Margaret’s life a misery, so much so that she's had to move house 34 times in the last 16 years; can't live in the marital home with her husband of 42 years, Richard; and is in constant pain.

A nurse by profession, Margaret's troubles only started when she was 54. She can practically pinpoint the date.

'Electricity leaked at a supply pole going into my home. I could hear it,' she said, adding that she started to experience a burning sensation in her skin, pains in her head and ear, facial pains and dried out eyes. She even had to have the black fillings taken out of her teeth because they attracted electricity and made her jaws rattle.

'A year after that electricity leaked, I started getting the pains,' she said, adding that to this day she cannot wear jewellery, and has to summon every bit of strength in her being to do simple tasks like grocery shopping.

'On December 23, 1995, I left home. I had to go, the pain was so bad,' she said, adding that she rented a mobile home. Later, her son Ultan built her a timber, Scandanavian-style residence between Tenacre and Bridgetown, which suited her needs perfectly at the time, but the electricity-free life only lasted a while.

'I took up residence there in June 1997, and it was grand for about ten months,' she said, but then mobile phone antennae started sprouting up across the countryside.

'Every time power increases, or broadband is set up, I can feel it,' she said.

'I have moved 34 times in the last 16 years,' she said, adding that for a short time she found solace in rented accommodation in Curracloe.

Currently Margaret is staying at her sister's, but expects that she will have to move on again soon.

' This has destroyed my life, my career,' she said, adding that she has turned to kinieslogists and other alternative healers for help - but still finds the pain intolerable at times.

She's been in touch with Green Party TDs Mary White and John Gormley, and has met with the Minister for the Environment. ' The only solution for me is to get these rays out of my home.

I can't see that happening.'

Distributed Antenna System (DAS)

Please take action and tell your town, state, and federal officials that you do not want microwave radiation emitting devices outside your child's bedroom window, their school, or your local shopping center.  Go to your local town council meeting, inform your neighbors, get involved and forward this to everyone you know. Enough is enough!

You may not have noticed but there are cell antennas going up in residential neighborhoods all over Rhode Island, maybe even on your street. They hang discretely from ordinary utility wires and unless you're looking for them you'd probably never notice them.  Because I have Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, which includes severe sensitivity to electromagnetic radiation, I recently purchased a radiation detector. I'd checked all the areas I normally travel to in town in order to avoid things like cell towers and Wi-Fi.  But recently I'd been feeling worse than usual despite the precautions I take and I wanted to know why.  I turned my meter on to recheck the area, and was shocked to find a microwave transmitting device had been installed right on the corner of my street.  Then I began finding them all over town.

The units going up all over my neighborhood are a new type of cell antenna and box called a Distributed Antenna System (DAS) that emits radiation for 800 feet in all directions. They are basically cylindrical-shaped black boxes--repeaters that push wireless signals through the areas between cell towers.

There appears to be a mad rush by industry to get these antennas installed as quickly as possible, and I suspect this is because the general public is starting to get savvy about the dangers. There is good reason to be concerned when high-powered microwave transmitters are literally placed outside people's bedroom windows and near our public schools and shopping centers.

This is a particularly dangerous and life-threatening situation for people like me, and those with chronic health issues, pregnant women, children, and the elderly are also at greater risk. At this point I cannot safely take a walk on my street, go to the bank, visit my doctor, go to the grocery store, or pick up my child from school without being exposed to dangerous levels of radiation. I have been experiencing headaches, dizziness, disorientation, nausea, insomnia, muscle aches, weakness, and burning eyes, throat, and skin every time I am exposed to these DAS units.

Most people living and working in close proximity to these antennas have no idea these devices have been installed, what they are, or that they're being exposed to dangerous levels of microwave radiation right in their own homes or while on the job. Many are already sick, but don't realize the source of their illness. The danger of radiation is that you cannot see it, hear it, or smell it. People with MCS/ES can literally feel the effects of radiation on their skin, but most people cannot. This puts the general public at an extreme disadvantage with regard to recognizing the hazards because many of the symptoms they do experience are also common to the flu.

Doctors in the U.S. are not typically trained to recognize the signs of radiation poisoning (in other countries they are). With chronic exposure these symptoms might eventually be misdiagnosed as Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, or Lyme Disease. Cognitive and neurological symptoms can lead to anxiety, ADHD, and insomnia.

If not removed from the source of radiation or with repeated exposures, one can develop autoimmune or neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, or leukemia.

So look out your bedroom window. Scan the parking lot where you shop, the streets where you're typically stuck in traffic, and your child's busstop and play areas. Do you see something hanging from the utility wire or a pole in the parking lot that you never noticed before?   Most people assume that federal authorities are protecting us from any potential danger with regard to radiation-emitting devices, but this simply isn't true.  Scientists around the world are warning that existing radiation standards are completely inadequate to protect public health because they are not biologically-based. So in effect, the telecom industry is completely unregulated and that is putting your health and your children's health at risk.

When the federal government isn't minding the store, it's up to citizens, town administrators, state agencies, and elected officials to educate themselves and take action.  You can read more about this issue and how Long Island residents are demanding protection from these devices by visiting

http://www.dontcellout.com/ .

Here you will find a picture of a typical DAS unit, and other models can be found by doing an on-line search. This is a public health crisis of exponential proportions that is playing out in communities all across this country. It is coming to your town soon if it hasn't already.  The public needs to take action because it is only a matter of time before a DAS unit is hanging outside of YOUR home. Please call or write your elected officials before it is too late.

Sincerely,
Mary Adkins, M.Ed.

DECT Cordless Phones (and WiFi) Causes Heart Irregularities

DECT Cordless phones which transmit a pulsed signal have been shown to impact heart rate in new research published in the European Journal of Oncology. "What we found is what many people have said for a long time about devices that emit microwaves," stated Dr. Havas. "People don't just feel ill, their heart begins to race and this is measurable with medical heart monitoring devices."

Wireless Electrical and Electromagnetic Pollution News

19 October 2010

This is the documentary on WiFi in schools that was on Global TV 16 by 9, The Bigger Picture on Sunday October 17, 2010.  It is just under 15 minutes and is excellent!  Parents and teachers we need to do something about this since children are exposed to microwave radiation without anyone protecting them, not the government, not the school board and certainly not the IT Departments!

Teachers need to speak out especially if they are sensitive and reacting to this radiation.  Parents and grandparents also need to speak out if their children are reacting adversely with headaches, dizziness, heart irregularities, etc.

The good news is that we can still access internet in schools by using wires rather than wireless technology without being exposed to microwave radiation.

Ont. school cuts Wi-Fi, cites health concerns

Mon Oct. 18 2010 9:26:36 AM
CTV.ca News Staff

http://toronto.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20101018/wifi-school-safety-101019/20101018/?hub=TorontoNewHome

A Meaford, Ont. public school is the first in the nation to shut down wireless Internet in classrooms amidst a growing debate over the effects of wireless emissions on children.

Parents of students at St. Vincent Euphrasia elementary school voted "overwhelmingly" to cut off the Wi-Fi, according to a statement released by the school's parent council Monday.

"Parents voted to protect their children's health and plug the computers back in with hardwires," council member Andrew Couper said in the statement.

Wi-Fi "is something every school council across Canada should be questioning," Couper said.

St. Vincent Euphrasia is one of a handful of schools to look into a Wi-Fi ban in recent months over fears it's making students sick.

A group of Ontario parents dubbed the Simcoe County Safe School Committee believes Wi-Fi transmitters in schools may be responsible for a host of symptoms their kids show -- from headaches to an inability to concentrate -- all of which disappear on weekends.

They first spoke out against school Wi-Fi this summer, prompting government officials to weigh the effects of wireless technology on children.

Ontario Education Minister Leona Dombrowsky said in August the matter is in Ottawa's hands.

Meanwhile, Dr. Arlene King, Ontario's chief medical officer of health, said that Wi-Fi poses no threat to children in schools.

King said it's understandable that people are confused by the debate over the safety of Wi-Fi transmitters in schools, given the sometimes conflicting evidence.

However, King said people need to look at the weight of the literature on the topic, especially from authorities like the World Health Organization, which says exposure to Wi-Fi is safe.

Health Canada says there is "no convincing scientific evidence" that Wi-Fi in schools is dangerous to children.

German "Heatball" whiz outwits EU light bulb ban

October 15, 2010

http://news.yahoo.com:80/s/nm/20101015/od_nm/us_germany_heatballs;_ylt=AtttlbcuRDys4tW7uA22Sbys0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTFmN3MxbTZtBHBvcwMyMDQEc2VjA2FjY29yZGlvbl9vZGRfbmV3cwRzbGsDZ2VybWFucXVvdGhl

BERLIN (Reuters) – A German entrepreneur is bypassing a European Union ban on light bulbs of more than 60 watts by marketing his own brand as mini heaters.

Siegfried Rotthaeuser and his brother-in-law have come up with a legal way of importing and distributing 75 and 100 watt light bulbs -- by producing them in China, importing them as "small heating devices" and selling them as "heatballs."

To improve energy efficiency, the EU has banned the sale of bulbs of over 60 watts -- to the annoyance of the mechanical engineer from the western city of Essen.

Rotthaeuser studied EU legislation and realized that because the inefficient old bulbs produce more warmth than light -- he calculated heat makes up 95 percent of their output, and light just 5 percent -- they could be sold legally as heaters.

On their website (http://heatball.de/), the two engineers describe the heatballs as "action art" and as "resistance against legislation which is implemented without recourse to democratic and parliamentary processes."

Costing 1.69 euros each ($2.38), the heatballs are going down well -- the first batch of 4,000 sold out in three days.

Rotthaeuser has pledged to donate 30 cents of every heatball sold to saving the rainforest, which the 49-year-old sees as a better way of protecting the environment than investing in energy-saving lamps, which contain toxic mercury.

Woman Claims Navy Frequency Is Cause Of Heart Issues

Susanne Reedy Says Frequency Gives Her Pacemaker Problems

October 14, 2010

http://www.10news.com/news/25396744/detail.html

SAN DIEGO -- A San Diego woman claims the U.S. Navy is putting her life at risk by not properly examining an issue that could cause her heart to stop.

At first, Susanne Reedy believed her pacemaker was acting up. Now, every time she tries to open her car door, she said her heart can literally skip a beat.

"That's frightening because my life depends on this," said Reedy.

Born with a congenital heart defect, Reedy has had a pacemaker for 15 years with few problems.

However, six months ago, she began suffering episodes of irregular heartbeat during some trips to the Hillcrest area, where she works as a hospital technician.

"I would get winded. It felt like my heart was pounding sideways," Reedy told 10News.

Last week, she got winded and her heart started to flutter. She went to her car and could not unlock it with the remote.

Reedy said each time she experienced the symptoms, her car remote was not working. A review of her doctor's appointments showed during her last two visits, other remotes in San Diego were not working properly.

In April and late July of this year, 10News reported on widespread remote failures from Point Loma to La Jolla. The manufacturers blamed it on Navy ships, but the Navy did not take responsibility. But Navy officials said many military bases often use the same frequency range as some consumer devices.

"Furious. That makes me angry. I just want the Navy to stop doing this; that's it," said Reedy.

The pacemaker company confirmed they have received several complaints, and they said they could not rule out widespread interference hampering pacemakers.

The problems could leave Reedy vulnerable to a stroke or worse.

"It gives us a big 'what if,'" said Reedy.

In a statement, Navy officials said: "We empathize with neighbors … We don't know what's causing any local interference. The Navy continues to operate within the mandated … radio communications band."

Smart meter program headed for disaster, says NDP

VICTORIA — The B.C. Liberals' plan to force B.C. Hydro to rush into spending $1 billion to install "smart" hydro meters in every B.C. home by 2012 is a disaster waiting to happen, says New Democrat energy critic John Horgan.

John Horgan

"Recent evidence from Ontario's smart meter experiment show more than 80 per cent of people are actually paying more, not less, under time-of-use billing using smart meters," said Horgan. "We are poised to make exactly the same mistakes here in B.C.

"By rushing to finish the project by 2012, we lose the ability to make sure we get it right by learning from the mistakes of other jurisdictions. If this really is a good idea, let's see best practices put in place with a studied, measured approach."

More than four million smart meters have been installed across Ontario, allowing for a time-of-use billing scheme to be implemented that is intended to reward users with lower rates for using electricity in off-peak hours. But recent numbers from Toronto Hydro show that 84 per cent of people's electricity bills have gone up, not down.

"The Ontario experience has shown that smart meters don't work when it comes to conserving energy and saving money. Instead, they are proving to do just the opposite," said Horgan, noting the billion-dollar price tag to install the meters in B.C. could be better spent elsewhere.

"Just imagine how much good a billion dollars could do to stimulate the economy and save energy if it was directed to home energy retrofits. Energy efficiency measures like upgrading heating systems, proper insulation, and other home upgrades are a proven way to manage electricity demand."

Horgan noted that the B.C. Liberals don't have a business plan that shows how smart meters will be implemented or how they will save electricity, nor is there an independent review process to evaluate the effectiveness of the program.

"Now that the B.C. Liberals have exempted all major energy projects  from the purview of the B.C. Utilities Commission, all decisions are being made at the whim of the embattled premier with no one but his head-nodding cabinet ministers to question their validity or value," said Horgan.

"B.C. families will be the ones who have to pay for the B.C. Liberals' reckless decisions through increasingly higher bills."

The Carole James New Democrats are holding the B.C. Liberals accountable for their HST doublecross while working with British Columbians from all walks of life, all corners of B.C., and all sectors of our economy to build a better British Columbia for the people of this province.

School WiFi defender cherry-picks her facts

Peterborough's Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Rosana Pellizzari, talked about WiFi in schools to the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board last week and said that anyone can cherry-pick results to support their conclusions and this is exactly what she did.

She quoted from a review of WiFi recently released by the Ontario Agency for Health Promotion and Protection. One of the many "cherry picked" quotes was the amount of radiation coming from a WiFi laptop computer at a distance of one metre. Who sits that far away? Don't you want to know what the levels are if you have the computer in your lap?

Dr. Pellizzari correctly stated that research on WiFi does not support the Bradford-Hill criteria of causation. However, she left the impression that studies have been conducted and they failed the test. This is false!

There is only one study on the biological effects of WiFi, which showed altered sperm DNA and motility. That's it! We have no idea how this radiation is going to affect growing bodies in the long-term.

The closest research is with adults using cell phones or living near cell phone antennas. These studies show an increased risk of tumours in the side of the body where a cell phone is held after 10 years of cell phone use and an increased incidence of cancers and other health effects for those who live within 500 metres of cell towers. Shouldn't this cause us to be concerned about microwave transmitters in the classroom?

Most schools with WiFi have not measured the levels of radiation. Since some schools use industrial strength WiFi systems we can't be blasé about this exposure.

Dr. Pellizzari recommended that schools monitor microwave exposure. I couldn't agree more. This is the least we can do.

By the way, does anyone care about the exposure of teachers? MAGDA HAVAS, BSC, PHD

WiFi makes my heart race, says White Rock woman

She says wireless internet is giving her ticker some problems

WHITE ROCK (NEWS1130) - Wireless internet is everywhere - coffee shops in Vancouver, public libraries in New Westminster and even along the waterfront in White Rock. But Linda Ewart wants a moratorium on WiFi.

She has a heart condition and says it starts acting up whenever she gets close to wireless technology. "It has rhythm issues. It flips and flops and races," she says.

The trouble is, it's hard to find a place where there isn't WiFi. So Ewart and a group of like-minded people are asking White Rock city council for a moratorium on all new wireless antennas and routers.

Ewart tells us, "They say about three per cent of the population is affected in some way, but the connection (between the effects and WiFi) hasn't been made."

She also questions whether it's safe for school children to be in buildings with WiFi. She's already talked to the B.C. Teachers' Federation and she'll be meeting with the school boards in Richmond and Victoria.
