Frank Berner is electrosensitive. The radiation from mobile phones and cordless phones makes him sick according his doctor. And another eleven percent of Germans as well. Can it be?

Frank Berner: "I can not come with the meter, that's embarrassing"

26. May 2011 2011-05-26 15:30:03

There are moments when Frank Berner is do not like themselves. "I will not be so, I think that's terrible," he says. "But what's the alternative?" In the moments when he thinks of the forty-five suspects his neighbors, he deliberately inflict harm by switching their wireless channel or turn off if you leave the house. "I see it: Okay, here come the miller's * home, now I would like toasted again. Or I wonder: Do the Meier's actually turned off their transmitters when they are just now gone away? Or are now the Weber grilling me? Where light is on? Where a car in the yard? Terrible. "He shakes his head about how far it has come with him.

None of this was predictable. If someone had it eleven years ago said that he give up his well-paid job as a culinary manager at a major Frankfurt event caterers and move in with his parents in Stuttgart again, would he just laughed. Since November, but he actually lives in the guest room of his parents, his own furniture is stored, his dream home - high ceilings, oak floors, white plaster walls and views - he's quit. Professionally, it is running, Berner is now together with his brother, owner of a company for glass partitions. "But I can actually more than I currently see professionally. I am not who I am normally. "

He has a cold sweat on the legs, violent palpitation

Berner is electrostatic sensitive. This has diagnosed a doctor. She believes that his body is sick of electromagnetic radiation.

Berner has panic attacks, sweating reason he swindled him, he sleeps all night long, despite total exhaustion not, sometimes he formulation gaps. He has a cold sweat on the legs, violent heart palpitations, headaches and constant thirst, he is nervous, tingling arms and legs often, and unconsciously his eyes he pinched together into small slits, as he must protect from bright light. When he did not know what ailed him, he resorted to his doctor's advice with two to three Valiumtabletten a day, with the enlargement of the paranasal sinuses, removal of gallstones, hypnosis and psychotherapy.

Then he quit his job. Nothing helped. Only when he moved into an apartment without electromagnetic pollution, as he stayed away from wireless radiation from cell phones, cordless phones and mobile phone masts, it was better to him suddenly. Until he got new neighbors, who installed a wireless transmitter in her apartment.

He is not alone with his electric sensitivity. The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) estimates that six to nine percent of Germans have the same problem. It takes the complaints of these people seriously, but there is not one believes that there really are the rays that make sick. Rather, studies of the BfS has shown that "so far no causal link between the presence of electromagnetic fields and health effects could be determined. make the view of Alexander Lerch, a member of the Radiation Protection Commission and Adviser to the Federal Environment Ministry in terms of mobile, it needs to succeed, the parties concerned "alternative concepts" as the cause of their complaints plausible "without them while the assumed environment, reference is confirmed easily done," and that preferably through a "multidisciplinary diagnosis and risk communication."

In other countries it is different. In Sweden Electrosensitive are considered "physically impaired", they have to pay a right to an electro smog-free workplace for the cost of upgrading the employer. Some hospitals provide radiation-free hospital rooms available in Stockholm and paid the Government the persons concerned to shield their homes by, for example, pays for special paint or special power cable. A small town in France has 2009 as the first community in the world their schools WLAN-free, several British private schools also do without it. Lerch, however, is safe: Protective measures such as "the bedroom of electrical equipment must be kept free to use limited mobile phone or even protect his house from a building biologists to radiation can be - unnecessary."

A scientific proof of the harmfulness of electromagnetic radiation has not been provided. The only thing is proved beyond doubt is a warming of the human body by the radiation. Critics, however, that research results be interpreted by scientists on one side and played down risks were formulated. To illustrate their skepticism is justified, they rely on the World Health Organisation (WHO). The German has not the radiation protector Lerchl included in a new Commission on Risk Assessment of the carcinogenic potential of electromagnetic fields, although Lerchl had even protested against its non-inclusion. The rationale of the WHO: You put there value to a "complete independence from commercial interests" and to members who were not "advocate a pre-position".

The WHO considers Lerchl for bias.

ICE can not take it anymore

Dealing with the results of recent international investigators drying on cell phone, the Interphone study, keep mobile critic also wrong.

But were questioned in the past ten years, more than 5,000 people with brain cancer.

Results: Frequent mobile phone calls will not be detected in cancer. What in the opinion of critics, but not enough attention was: Basically, do not rule out an increase in the risk of brain tumors by intensive mobile phone use, according to the study. And long-term effects of frequent phone calls or the risks for children and young people it says nothing. Many large insurance companies refuse to mobile operators and terminal manufacturers by reason of unpredictable health risks, liability for damages caused by electromagnetic radiation.

Frank Berner followed these discussions only in passing. They encourage him and help him in mastering his everyday life.

Fully he is busy going to the high-frequency electromagnetic from the road. In his company there are wired phones. His cell phone he no longer used. ICE can also take it no more, since the trains are equipped with WLAN. Hotel nights are for him just as taboo as a vacation in unfamiliar territory. And a radiation-free apartment, he shall also not so easy. How could they? "I feel the radiation is most often immediately or after a short time. But what if everything is quiet during the visit, because the neighbors are at work, and then starts the evening of terror? Or when new neighbors move in one day as my last apartment? "In March, he therefore has a flat display in the natural foods magazine abandoned meal and grain". So far without success. There have indeed reported to him about twenty people who describe themselves as well as electro-sensitive. But no one had a suitable residence for him. This is because the coverage in Germany at about 99 per cent and the current expansion of the transmission extremely strong "Long Term Evolution network (LTE) is expected soon to reach 100 percent. So there are fewer and fewer places for a while more and more sensitive electronic concerned.

High blood pressure, diarrhea, muscle tremors, and insomnia
For example, the former Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland, the newspaper Dagbladet, Oslo ", she told a headache when she was exposed to radio frequency radiation. Or those practicing gynecologist from Bavaria, after six months full of high blood pressure, diarrhea, muscle tremors, and insomnia was back in perfect health after the cordless DECT phone that she and her husband had installed a year ago in a room adjoining the bedroom, only to the basement and had then banned altogether.

Even the federal government recommends to minimize electromagnetic suspension and "traditional cable connections to be preferred if it can be dispensed with the use of radio-based solutions." They, too, has, in a briefing of parliament on health effects of mobile phones from December 2008 point out that there was "relative to the exposure of fetuses and children" open questions, as well as with respect to "potential effects on cognition, mood and sleep." At another point she goes to the "long-term effects on humans", which were also not clarified.

About possible long-term effects while protecting the existing limits anyway. The scientists at the ICNIRP, the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection, which they have developed close, but also insufficient to establish that there could be such long-term effects. Since these were not yet detected and the residual risk that there could still be some who had very small, the calculated values of them only to protect against "short-term, immediate effects" of radiation.

Anders sees this, the EU Parliament. Particularly in view of possible long-term consequences, it is recommended lowering the legal limits, and the European Environment Agency is also encouraging. Its director Jacqueline McGlade remembers "the harmful effects of substances such as asbestos, nicotine or PCBs, which are only decades after their introduction emerged," and recommends "risk prevention in policy until further clarification by the research." adopted also provides that the Environment Committee of the European Parliament, the beginning of May, a resolution has that certain of a potentially damaging effects of high frequency waves emanating below the applicable limits. "Can wait until a high level of scientific and clinical evidence leading to very high health and economic costs," reads the notice.

A thriving market has to be protected from encroachment
The federal government does, however, is difficult with the reduction of the limits, although the new red-green government in Baden-Württemberg will now operate at the federal level for it. According to Bernd Pfaffenbach, State Secretary, Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs, is "to protect a thriving market of interventions" that are "scientifically unfounded".

Mobile Critics see it as particularly problematic that the technical radiation now fill out almost the entire spectrum of the so-called non-ionizing radiation, while the naturally occurring radiation levels in part a billion times over stocked. The evolution has taken advantage of the frequency range that will now occupied by the mobile, in order to organize the control of vital processes in the interior of man. "Mobile phone transmits our cells and their exchange of information between each other," said the Consumer Affairs Office Diagnostic radio.

Cell phone radiation leads to the formation of free radicals in cells, this is scientifically proven. The organism being brought into stress. This could lead to many diseases, from fatigue to palpitations to DNA damage.

Many friends have retreated

The Vienna Medical Association warns on its website as before, mobile phones to put in your pocket. Maybe it could "affect fertility in men. Mobile phone radiation is "not as safe, as claimed by the mobile operators and over again." Such warnings, however, come with most people on deaf ears. Sensitive electric can therefore not only report of lack of understanding of their suffering, but even by a degree of social ostracism. As with Frank Berner. He had earlier and more friends. "Many have retired because they were annoyed that I am no longer mobile access, or because they are looking for a spinner to keep," he says as he sits with his parents over coffee and apple pie in the sun-drenched old apartment in Stuttgart residential area geese Heide . Berne tries a laugh, but he does not succeed so well.

After all, dealing with other people is for him has become a balancing act. "I can not go to the neighbors and say: Can you imagine that your DECT phone with us shines on the dining table? Or transmits on my sofa? I can not even come with the meter, that's embarrassing, but there feel they are harassed and oppressed. "

Berner would find it important that the public is more interested in the arguments of the critics mobile. The quote, for example, a meta of the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment in 2006 in which a link between electromagnetic radiation and is "non-specific symptoms such as headache" classified as "probable". Or verify the study of a Canadian scientist who is recently managed the harmful influence of DECT phones on the heart in a double-blind trial: Magda Havas, professor of environmental studies at Trent University in Peterborough, published in October last year in the "European Journal of Oncology ", a study in which they demonstrated that there are people whose heart rate is strongly increased as soon as they keep a cordless phone to the head.

A friendship in pause mode
BfS is however disagree with the authors of these two studies. It has conducted its own studies that come to the conclusion that "it threatens to current scientific knowledge, no damage to health by the high-frequency radiation of cell phones and if the limits are met." Research needs also sees the BfS however, still possible long-term consequences and effects on children. Therefore it is advisable to keep one's exposure to radiation as a precaution as low as possible.

The casualty does not help that.

You only have one life would help in the radio hole. Frank Berner has decided to educate his neighbors but on his electric sensitivity - embarrassing or not.

Because he wants to continue his life in his socially developed environment and can not be sent back to a reserve. Equipped with a measuring device for electromagnetic pollution, he decided to direct some residents sought, he let the noise of the electromagnetic fields in their homes listening to them and tells how he is suffering from the radiation. Some have even believed him. A neighbor exchange under Berners visit all conventional DECT phones in his property against low-radiation from cordless telephones. Other roommate of a former apartment turned away baffled - even as the Bern company offered to pay all costs of conversion. And a friendly couple made the trip together covert tests with him. "The secret the WLAN have every fifteen minutes on and off and by the way I always casually asked how I am. This friendship is now in pause mode. "

His family keeps him after all. Tolerate his whims, he has not slept for nights. His emotional tension. His despair. "I see it in him. His eyes, his expression, his charisma are quite different when it is exposed to. A depletion takes place, "says his mother. And then she starts to cry almost. "Him to do so, which hurts me deeply. Because I just can not help him. "

* The names of all the neighbors have been changed.

Calculated omissions by cell phone industry citing pickles in IARC Group 2B

The cell phone industry and its proponents are trying to dismiss the IARC's extremely significant rating of radio-frequency radiation as a Group 2B carcinogen. One of the methods they are using is calculated omission. An example of their use of calculated omission is citation of items that are typically considered innocuous but are also classified as Group 2B carcinogens. One of the items they like to mention is pickles.

What they aren't telling us are the specifics of why pickles -- specifically traditional Asian pickles -- have been categorized in Group 2B.

Included below is an extract from the IARC Monographs on the Evaluation of Carcinogenic Risks to Humans, Volume 56 (1993), Summary of Data Reported and Evaluation, pages 4-6, PICKLED VEGETABLES. From it we can see that it is certain chemicals commonly found in these types of pickles that are implicated in warranting the Group 2B classification. At the end of the summary is a list of synonyms for the chemicals in question. Even a brief search on the Internet using these synonyms can indicate reasons for concern. References for the IARC summary are also included at the end of this message.

Next time the industry attempts this kind of misdirection, the full facts can set the record straight.

5. Summary of Data Reported and Evaluation

5.1 Exposure data
Traditional processes for pickling vegetables in some regions of China, Japan and Korea involve fermentation of local vegetables, with or without salting. Such preparations are often eaten daily or several times a week. Among the many compounds found at low levels in pickled vegetables are N-nitrosamines and Roussin red methyl ester, which reacts with secondary amines to form N-nitrosamines.

5.2 Human carcinogenicity data
A cohort study from Japan suggests that intake of pickled vegetables is positively associated with risk for stomach cancer, but further cohort studies from Japan and Hawaii do not support an association. The methods used to determine dietary intake differed in these studies, and the types of pickled vegetables included may also have differed.

Seven case-control studies of stomach cancer have been conducted that included data on consumption of pickled vegetables. Three conducted in Japan gave negative results and another gave positive results.

One study of Japanese in Hawaii showed an association, but two conducted in China did not.

A large case-control study of oesophageal cancer in Hong Kong showed a significant dose-response relationship between consumption of pickled vegetables and oesophageal cancer, after potential confounding factors were taken into account. A study in a high- and an intermediate-risk area in China showed an association with consumption of pickled vegetable juice, although there was no association with consumption of pickled vegetables; a population-based study in a high-risk area of northern China also gave negative results for pickled vegetables.

Intake of salted/pickled vegetables (leafy vegetables, roots and olives) has been investigated in two case control studies of nasopharyngeal carcinoma from China and in one from Tunisia. One of these studies, from Guangxi, China, showed a significant association with eating salted/pickled vegetables.

Two correlation studies carried out in Japan and one carried out in Hawaii suggest a relationship between consumption of pickled vegetables and stomach cancer, but the results are not completely consistent. The results of correlation studies on oesophageal cancer were also inconsistent.

No data were available on pickled vegetables made elsewhere in the world.

5.3 Animal carcinogenicity data
No adequate study on the carcinogenicity of pickled vegetables to experimental animals was available to the Working Group.

5.4 Other relevant data
In a single study, extracts of pickled vegetables from northern China induced morphological transformation of Syrian hamster embryo cells in culture. Extracts of pickled vegetables from northern China and Japan are mutagenic to bacteria.

5.5 Evaluation
There is limited evidence in humans for the carcinogenicity of pickled vegetables as prepared traditionally in Asia.

There is inadequate evidence in experimental animals for the carcinogenicity of pickled vegetables.

Overall evaluation

Pickled vegetables (traditional Asian) are possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B).

Ontario government to examine possible cellphone link to cancer

http://www.therecord.com/news/canada/article/541353--ontario-government-to-examine-possible-cellphone-link-to-cancer

TORONTO — The Ontario government will examine a World Health Organization warning about a possible link between cellphones and cancer, but won't take any immediate action to warn consumers, Health Promotion Minister Margarett Best said Wednesday.

The United Nations agency reported Tuesday that the type of electromagnetic radiation emitted by cellphones and other wireless devices could possibly cause cancer.

The New Democrats want warning labels slapped on cellphones and smart phones to caution users about the possible increased risk of cancer, but Best said for now she'll consult more experts.

"I will be speaking with the Ontario chief medical officer of health, as well as Health Canada," she said. "It's a very important issue, and we will monitor and continue to monitor the evidence, the new evidence that has been brought forward."

Scientists with the WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer classified radio frequency electromagnetic fields as "possibly carcinogenic to humans,"' based on a higher risk of glioma, a rare but often deadly form of brain tumour.

Other substances in the same category include pesticides and gasoline engine exhaust. The other categories include carcinogenic, probably carcinogenic and probably not carcinogenic.

The New Democrats said parents should not let their children use cellphones because their thinner skulls make them more vulnerable to the radiation.

"Would you let your kids play in the exhaust coming from a car?" said NDP health critic France Gelinas. "Right now they treat it as low microwaves cooking your brain slowly."

The NDP wants the warnings already printed in the books that come with mobile and smart phones to be placed on the actual phones themselves. The upgraded warning from the UN agency should prompt governments to take action to protect people, added Gelinas.

"How much more evidence do you need before you do as little as letting people know that there might be a risk, and here's how you protect yourself?" she said. "When the World Health Organization bumps it up a step, it is significant, significant enough that a government should act."

The Progressive Conservatives said the WHO report was a "warning flag," but said government should wait until the studies are completed to confirm a link between cellphones and cancer.

The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association, which represents most of the cellphone companies, said Tuesday that the WHO report only found a "possible" link between wireless devices and cancer.

"They were very clear that they are not saying there is a proven link between cellphones and cancer," said Marc Choma, the wireless association's director of communications. "There is no reason to put a warning on the cellphones."

A group of parents in the Barrie area who have been fighting to have WiFi turned off in schools said the WHO report gives school boards all the evidence they need to take action to protect teachers and students exposed to wireless radiation for six hours a day.

"If they already have policies in place to deal with anything that legally is called a potential hazard, they are obligated to warn any person who works in the building that the hazard exists and what the hazard is," said Rodney Palmer of the Simcoe County Safe Schools Committee. "Do we put a class 2B carcinogen in a classroom and do we do that without informed consent from the parents?"

The cancer warning isn't just about cellphones, added Palmer.

"It's WiFi, baby monitors and cordless home telephones, which all operate at 2.4(gigahertz)," he said.

1 June 2011
Oral Questions

Mme France Gélinas: Ma question est pour la ministre de la Promotion de la santé. Given that the World Health Organization has now classified electro magnetic fields from cellphones as a possible carcinogen, that is, that it could cause cancer, will the government require cellphone companies to put warnings on cellphones sold in Ontario?

Hon. Margarett R. Best: I thank the member for her question. First of all, let me assure you that our government continues to be committed to the health of Ontarians. We have worked diligently to address the dangers associated with cigarette smoking, unhealthy eating and inactivity. We certainly welcome the World Health Organization's report. We will continue to review all evidence, including this report, in consultation with our experts.

Let me just say that the one thing that the member says—and I agree with what she says—they said there is "possible"—and I think that is a very key word for her to keep in mind as I continue to talk with our Chief Medical Officer of Health, Health Canada and all our experts in monitoring the new scientific evidence that has come to—

The Speaker (Hon. Steve Peters): Thank you. Supplementary?

Mme France Gélinas: This is an issue that I have addressed with this minister before in a number of ways. In rejecting our call to inform Ontarians about the health risk cellphones the minister said, "Based on reviews of available scientific evidence by credible public health agencies, such as the World Health Organization, the RF energy from cellphones has not been demonstrated to be causally linked to adverse health effects including cancer." That is what she said. Now, that the World Health Organization has linked cellphones to cancer and is calling for pragmatic measures to reduce exposure, won't the minister support the pragmatic measure by putting warning labels on cellphones, or will she do nothing at all to educate Ontarians about the possible health risks for cellphone use?

Hon. Margarett R. Best: Let me reiterate for the member, in case she didn't hear me he first time: We have worked diligently to address the dangers of cigarette smoking, unhealthy eating and inactivity. ??Wildly enough, Ontarians are certainly something we are committed to as a government. As the member said before, the World Health Organization has said that there is a possible, and I quote, "possible," and underline that. That is why we have experts that we speak to. I do not do this—make decisions on my own—without listening to the experts. What I will do upon reviewing this evidence and talking with our Chief Medical Officer of Health, Health Canada, we will continue to monitor the new scientific evidence—

The Speaker (Hon. Steve Peters): Thank you. New question.

Proposed Cell Tower Plans Suspended

Earlier this evening, Rogers issued a press release stating that the installation at 1461 Rebecca has been suspended pending further discussions with the Mayor and the Town. Full text of the Rogers press release follows at the end of this email.

We view this development in a positive light. We have spoken to the Mayor, who has been working with us. He is very aware of the concerns that we all share with regard to this installation, including the lack of consultation and wisdom of placing these installations in such close proximity to residential areas.

While we welcome this news, we also recognize that much work remains to be done. It has been your continued vigilance and hard work that has seen us make some progress.

The federal government retains their exclusive authority in this matter, and they are the only level of government with the power to make changes to the legislation governing these installations. If you have not done so already, you can express your concerns to our Oakville Member of Parliament, Terence Young, at young.t@parl.gc.ca

We look forward to continuing to work with you to see a satisfactory resolution to this issue.

From Israel

Ofir Pines: They knew all the time

Ofir Pines, former Knesset member, was interviewed this morning on IARC's decision on the radio. He said- the decision makers knew and they prevented the public from radiation protection. I would take the executives of the Communication Ministry to court for this, not less.

He said people in Israel are dying from tumors caused by the cellular phone. Many people have cancer and they don't make the connection to the radiation.

Prof Sigal Sadezky: I was surprised

Dan Shilon on TV interviewed Prof. Sadezky: what happened that they changed suddenly changed their former decision, which said that there is no link between cellular and cancer. Sadezky: Lately there were published several studies, including mine. And this affected the change of their decision. I am in this subject for 15 years. We are surrounded by non ionizing radiation non stop.

For example Wi-Fi, DECT. I was surprised by IARC's decision. I did not expect they would go so far. The cell phone companies will continue to operate. The question is now whether to adopt 4G, there was no public debate.

Cancer Research UK lets the public down over mobile phone safety advice

The World Health Organisation's International Agency for Research on Cancer have concluded, almost unanimously, that there is enough evidence to classify Radio Frequency energy exposure as a "Possible Human Carcinogen". CRUK virtually dismiss the IARC judgement as being most unlikely and do not offer any advice to the public or users about ways they might use their mobile more safely. We do wonder which team they are playing for.

The Federal of Canadian Municipalities has an interesting article telling us what we can expect over the next while – more cell transmitters, less municipal and citizen involvement – opening the cell industry to foreign investment without control or limit.

The article is at

If for some reason the link doesn't work, google: FCM Perfect Storm, and clink on the top of the topic list.

We must begin grass roots work to let people know what is planned for their homes, schools and neighbourhoods.

This story is about Google funding Fibre Optic to a city which includes the schools - investing the money in the right place with fibre optic instead of the wrong place with wireless.

Downloads that normally take over 20 minutes happen in 5 seconds or less hardwired on fibre optic. This is the kind of technological support best for schools.

The FCC is proposing to take the first specific steps toward the elimination of landline telephones.

Comments from the public are due on or before April 18, 2011.

Below is a summary of what is being proposed. If you wish to send comments, the easiest way is to send them electronically by going to www.regulations.gov.

Click on "submit a comment." Then enter "FCC-2011-0078-0001" into the "Enter Keyword or ID" field and click on "Search." When the next screen appears, click on "Submit a Comment" next to the result. The result will be titled "Developing a Unified Intercarrier Compensation."

You can type a simple comment of up to 2000 words, or you can attach any documents you wish. Attached word documents should be double spaced.

Summary

The complete FCC proposal can be found at

http://www.fcc.gov/Daily_Releases/Daily_Business/2011/db0209/FCC-11-13A1.pdf.

Briefly, the FCC believes that the switched telephone network (i.e. telephone lines and switching centers) is obsolete and should be dismantled. Therefore FCC's policy is to phase out telephone lines during the coming years and replace them with broadband service. In other words, the FCC wants ordinary telephones to be entirely replaced with cell phones and computers (voice over Internet). The first step is to take money that is now being used to subsidize rural telephone service and subsidize broadband (i.e. Internet) services instead.

The Universal Service Fund is a federal fund paid for by a surcharge on everyone's long distance telephone bill. Until now, the fund has been used to subsidize telephone service in rural areas, as well as telephone service to people with low incomes, to make sure all Americans have access to a telephone.

This proposal by the FCC would eliminate some subsidies for ordinary telephone services within two years and reallocate Universal Service Fund money to pay for fixed and wireless broadband instead. This is the first step in eliminating the Universal Service Fund itself and creating a "Connect America Fund," which could only be used to subsidize fixed and wireless broadband.

In addition, the FCC is proposing to reduce the allowable per-minute rate for long distance phone calls, which will make it less profitable for companies to operate landlines.

The most important thing the FCC needs to hear from you is that the switched telephone network must be maintained. The Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board ("the Access Board"), is the federal agency that administers the Americans with Disabilities Act. According to the Access Board, an estimated 3% of the population, or almost 10 million Americans, have electromagnetic sensitivities

They cannot use wireless technology and have difficulty using computers. They depend on the switched telephone network for voice communication. "Universal Service" is not universal if it excludes 10 million people. Eliminating landlines will leave millions of Americans without even basic telephone service.

If you are a person who depends on landlines for your communication needs, please send in your comments and tell that to the FCC.

Prof. Dr. Huber,

I am forwarding a quote from correspondence with an American professor which is relevant to the treatment of three researchers: Prof. Olle Johansson, the Karolinska Institute; Dr. Annie Sasco, Université Victor-Segalen, Bordeaux 2, France; and Dr. Dimitris Panagopoulos, the University of Athens.

"Having spent more than two of my most formidable years of education in Germany several decades back, I was touched by the irony of the following address you so kindly provided:

"League of European Research Universities

Prof. Bernd Huber, (Chair),

President of the Ludwig-Maximians-Universität München

"They were good and faithful Germans, the males having served on the Eastern Front and the females having done war service.

Such are the ideals and responsibilities you assumed when you took your position.

If you plan to be a so-called "super-university" and, as such, a conduit for Euro funding, it may even be in the long term interest of LERU to fund their research.

Student deaths leave Queen's struggling for answers

ADRIAN MORROW AND KATE HAMMER
From Friday's Globe and Mail
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/student-deaths-leave-queens-struggling-for-answers/article1975953/
Published Friday, Apr. 08, 2011
Grief has become commonplace at Queen's University, where six students have died – two in the past week alone – in just over a year. The struggle to reconcile the nature of something so tragic, including at least two suicides, has touched off soul-searching among students and faculty and prompted their leadership to acknowledge that something must be done.
More related to this story

"I don't think we've been nearly open enough about it and talk about it," principal Daniel Woolf said. "If there's anything good to come out of this, it will be to put mental health at the forefront and take it out of the shadows."

The university's administration is taking steps to help the community cope, attempting to address the most confounding of questions: Why Queen's? Why now?

There are no easy answers, but students have begun exploring them in their own way.

Thursday, the second-last day of the school year, saw a student-led response to the tragedies dubbed "Queen's Loves U," which grew out of a Facebook page started by Kevin Imre, a third-year political science student. Organized outside of the official aegis of the university, the event featured tables where people could write open letters to the school community. "It's really hard to figure out how to help or what to do about it, and that's where my frustration comes from," Mr. Imre said.

Just days ago, students gathered in a vaulted hall to pay tribute to Andrew Lloyd, 20, a third-year undergrad found dead at his home near campus last week – a presumed suicide – hours after news emerged that engineering student Kyle Kinsella had died from complications relating to diabetes.

It was a solemn coda to a year that began with the accidental deaths of Cameron Bruce, 18, who felt out a dorm window, and Habib Khan, 19, who fell through a library skylight. The community also struggled with the suicide of 18-year-old Jack Windeler in March of last year and the death of 21-year-old Robert Nason in February.

"Even if you don't know them, it's hard," said Caillie Turcotte, a first-year drama student. "You have this weight on your shoulders, like – who's next?"

The small and concentrated campus provides the illusion of shelter from such harsh realities. For eight months of the year, the limestone buildings housing libraries, laboratories and coffee shops teem with nearly 24,000 students. In a city of 150,000 people, the students form a nearly self-contained ecosystem on the shores of Lake Ontario.

But when tragedy strikes, the whole community feels it. "There's no anonymity at Queen's," said Brian Yealland, the school's chaplain. "People are known to each other. Any loss affects the student mood and the student body. It has made them feel more sad, more fragile."

Students have stopped in the hallways and visited Mr. Yealland's office to talk about the deaths. Some argue that Queen's must put more resources into mental-health programs. They say it can take weeks to see a counsellor and that there's often nowhere to turn for help coping with academic and peer pressures and the stress of being away from home.

The university, however, says it is improving. The administration is reviewing front-line services to make them more efficient, and is looking at giving graduate teaching assistants mental-health training so they can identify students who might need help and refer them to counsellors, said John Pierce, the dean of students.

The students' union, the Alma Mater Society, has seen a surge in demand for its peer support services this year and is looking at assigning counsellors to residence halls. They'll face no shortage of questions. "It puzzles me in a sense," said Alex Radu, a second-year commerce student. "Why is this happening and what is the cause of this? What changed?"

After Mr. Bruce's fatal fall in September, fellow students created a patch bearing the image of a bugle, his instrument, to adorn their jackets. And in the days following the two most recent tragedies, theatre student Peter Nielsen's class wrote a song to uplift students cramming for exams and performed it, flash-mob style, at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the library.

"We said, we need to put down the books, take time for ourselves, put our lives before the work, because unfortunately, there were those who weren't able to do that this year," Mr. Nielsen said. "[The song was] telling the population of Queen's that we are a group. Sometimes we feel overwhelmed or alone, but all the university students are here to support each other."

The City of Clearlake in California has imposed an immediate moratorium on the installation of SmartMeters.

Among the many findings cited in the City Council's statement on the moratorium, is one which will be of particular interest to the amateur radio community.

It reads:

"There is now evidence showing that problems with Smart Meters could adversely impact the amateur radio communication network that operates throughout California and neighboring states, as well as other radio emergency communication systems that serve first responders, government agencies, and the public."

Viewpoint - Smart meters and grids put public at risk

By Contributed Opinion - Gulf Islands Driftwood

Published: March 30, 2011 10:00 AM

By CHRIS ANDERSON

Why is our publicly owned utility allowed to dictate that we must accept a powerful source of continuous electromagnetic radiation — in the form of a so-called electrical "smart" meter — on every home and workplace?

The billion dollar — and rising — "smart grid" plan, developed and now being deployed in relative secrecy by BC Hydro, with no open public consultation, is to be part of an interconnected, continental and very vulnerable "smart" power grid. The problem lies in the intention to track power usage in — virtually — real time, via meters that transmit data via EM radiation that science shows is unsafe. There is a need for wide-scale improvements to the present semi-dysfunctional system. But Gulf Islanders for Safe Technology takes the position that improvements must not be introduced at the expense of public health and security.

Hydro takes the position that Health Canada's very lax and unprotective exposure limits are not being exceeded, so the new wireless system is "safe." Yet our widely discredited guidelines offer protection only from extremely high levels of exposure that cause body tissue heating. (Think microwave ovens.) But from much lower intensities — at "non-thermal" exposure levels — we're not protected by these irrelevant guidelines. And if we had realistic exposure limits based on how biology is affected, never would "smart meters" use radiation to exchange data. They would all be and should be hard wired.

At greatest risk from "smart grid" radiation — as is the pattern with any hazardous contaminant — are the young, the elderly, the immune-compromised, those who are pregnant and the growing population of those with electromagnetic or electrical sensitivity. Soon, if we allow Hydro to get away with this so-called "smart" experiment, we can never be free of electromagnetic contamination. All wiring systems will be linked with all other wiring systems throughout North America, as meter after "smart" meter shoots powerful periodic bursts of data-laden radiation to awaiting antennas. These then blanket the area with more radiation linking with the grid.

In addition to damage to public health, loss of privacy and risk to personal data security by "smart" grids, another great concern is the issue of cyber security. In Canada we have recently seen major intrusions by hackers based in China, of ultra secure federal departments such as finance and defence research. We're now in an age of cyber warfare where nothing is immune from intrusion. Iran has just threatened a possible "retaliatory cyber strike" against the North American power grid — a snap if it's all interconnected and "meshed."

"There's a general consensus amongst . . . most of us in the security business that smart meter technology has gotten way out in front of the security technology," says top cyber expert Mark Weatherford, chief security officer for Washington-based North American Electric Reliability Corp.

These new radiating "smart" meters are increasingly a cause of ill health, in other areas where they are deployed. The public has consistently never been consulted about being experimented on in this way, as companies rush for a share of the largest, most profitable economic bubble ever dreamed into being. "At stake: a global market worth $45 trillion." (N. Hodge: The Second Leg of Smart Grid Profits, November 2009).

Fortunately, the new "improved" Clark administration and new Energy Minister Rich Coleman have called for a review of this expensive wireless plan. Questionable insider dealings during the Campbell regime have also surfaced. The cost to B.C. taxpayers is huge. Anything this momentous, involving change on such a grand scale, must in a democratic society involve the public.

Rate hikes for electricity — to pay for "smart" technology — will make it difficult for many to keep the lights on, let alone to stay warm. Hydro admits to a whopping 50 per cent increase for the next three years. B.C. Public Interest Advocacy Centres say it will be 10 per cent for 10 years! And what's so "smart" about that?

The writer heads the Gulf Islanders for Safe Technology group.

Subject: Beta spike in California. BBC recklessly endangers life

From Radnet data https://cdx.epa.gov/SSL/cdx/EPA_Home.asp

It appears that there has been a sudden increase in beta radiation in California today (30th March 2011). We are not able to say what has caused it. We hope to do some analysis tomorrow, Thursday 31st, and see what Radnet data show then. See the LLRC site <http://www.llrc.org> for the graph. We bring you this information so people on the western seaboard of the Americas can take the elementary precaution of staying indoors. We hope this is a false alarm but it is prudent to assume it is not.

Earlier we posted that the BBC is recklessly endangering people by ridiculing people for taking Iodine tablets as a precaution against radioactive pollution. On Monday 28th March Material World - a regular Radio 4 science programme - featured Professor Robin Grimes, Director of the Centre of Nuclear Engineering at Imperial College, London.

He sneered at Californians for taking stable Iodine (the stable Iodine fills up the thyroid gland so it can't absorb Iodine 131). He added that it was not necessary even for people in Tokyo. He said: I believe people in California are buying Iodine tablets and things like that which is completely, completely crazy. However there will be people close to the [Fukushima] plant who should be taking that [Iodine] as a precaution and they are being told to do so; that's being dealt with in a sensible manner but [for] people in - say - as far away as Tokyo that would not be necessary at this point in time - not even close.

Mindful that after Chernobyl increased thyroid cancer was observed in Britain as well as Russia, LLRC's current advice is that people in Japan definitely ought to be taking stable Iodine; California is borderline (or it was borderline when we uploaded) In the UK it's probably unnecessary at present. However, as the UK Health Protection Agency agrees, there are no risks associated with Iodine tablets so long as the dose is not grossly exceeded. There is no argument against taking them as a precaution. Grimes' remarks can only be seen either as ignorant or as just one more attempt to play down the hazard of nuclear power.

US Attorney Stuart Smith of environmental and personal injury specialists Smith Stag <http://www.smithstag.com> told LLRC Grimes' advice would, if followed, increase risks with possibly fatal conseqences, especially for children. People would be justified in prosecuting him, his employers and the BBC for recklessly endangering life. Stuart Smith's law firm is a pioneer in the field of Technologically Enhanced Radioactive Materials and oilfield waste litigation.

The UK has no law of reckless endangerment but in USA and Scotland among other countries it is a criminal offence to put lives at risk through an action or by failing to act.

LLRC's Secretary Richard Bramhall said: BBC producers seem to have forgotten that they are required to balance the expression of opinions on controversial issues. On radiation and health the BBC is institutionally unbalanced, routinely allowing "experts" like Professor Grimes to claim that only 50 deaths are attributable to Chernobyl without reference to the countervailing evidence.

The "Horizon" documentary "Nuclear Nightmares" in 2006 was an outstanding example. My complaint eventually led the BBC Trust to rule "Nuclear Nightmares" was biased. I hope the threat of a class action in California or Japan will concentrate minds a bit.

A Real Pain

http://www.canada.com/Sensitivity+wireless+frequencies+real+pain/4525150/story.html

In regards to A. Richards letter regarding wireless hydro meters, I want to state that I totally agree with his concern of making personal choices.

Several years ago I got wireless internet for my home. Eight months later my ankles and feet were so painful I could not walk more than a block. X-rays showed nothing wrong, so surgery was scheduled to fuse the bones in my feet.

All my life I had been lucky to have been a sound sleeper, but now I had insomnia for the first time in my life.

It was on the third night of not having slept, I decided to unplug everything in my house because I kept feeling constant rhythmic vibration pulses when I lay in bed or on my couch or on the floor. Actually after three nights without sleep I thought I was going mad. To my surprise, when I unplugged my wireless router, all vibration stopped.

When I phoned my internet provider, they didn't seem surprised and said that some people are more sensitive to Electromagnetic Frequencies (EMF). Researching this on the internet I found much information, including that EMF sensitivity is considered a disability in Sweden, and that employers must provide shielding for these persons.

I got rid of my wireless, installed shielded cables for my internet and am now sleeping soundly every night. My feet hardly hurt anymore and I have cancelled the surgery. I am getting my health back!

regarding wireless and EMF radiation concerns.

Wireless baby monitors should be a concern for parents. Maybe that's why the baby is crying?

Out of necessity I have a cell phone, but try not to carry it too close to my body or I turn it off when not in use.

We seem to have forgotten that in the 1950s X-rays were considered harmless, and those were considerably stronger than what we use today. In the 1950s in Germany, children's feet (including mine) were x-rayed in shoe stores for every pair they tried on to see if they fit.

The radiation could be measured outside the store.

Policy

Electric and electronic systems have become so pervasive that it is now difficult to imagine life without them. While they contribute to our quality of life in many ways, they also create electromagnetic fields (non-ionising radiation) which, when emitted at sufficient levels, may warm biological tissues (as they do in microwave ovens).

Electromagnetic fields have different frequencies - expressed in Hertz (Hz), or oscillations per second - suited to different uses, for example:

  • strong static fields (0 Hz) are used in medical MRI scanning
  • low frequencies (50 Hz) are used by the standard alternating electric current (AC) feeding our homes and offices
  • high frequencies are used by mobile phones (900 MHz).

Until about 20 years ago, the main manmade sources of electromagnetic fields were radio and television broadcasting stations and high voltage power lines. The rapid development of mobile telecommunications and other electronic appliances since the 1990's has substantially increased the number of sources and types of electromagnetic fields we are exposed to. This has raised concerns about their possible adverse health effects.

Japan nuclear plant boss hospitalised

By North Asia correspondent Mark Willacy, wires

Japan is now considering plans to drape special covers over the shattered nuclear reactor buildings at Fukushima. (TEPCO)

The president of Tokyo Electric Power, the company that runs Japan's crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant, has been admitted to hospital.

The strain of the crisis appears to have taken its toll on Masataka Shimizu, 66, who was hospitalised with high blood pressure and dizziness.

Mr Shimizu fell ill during the Fukushima nuclear crisis and took several days off from the joint taskforce set up by the company and the government.

He has not appeared in public for more than a fortnight.

As Japan works to contain the world's worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in 1986, the level of radioactive iodine in the sea off the stricken nuclear plant has reached its highest reading yet - more than 3,300 times the legal limit.

The Japan government is now considering plans to drape shattered nuclear reactor buildings with special covers to limit radiation and pump contaminated water into a tanker.

The embattled nation is also inviting foreign experts to help stabilise the overheating Fukushima station.

The United States has lent Japan robots that can crawl through, film and clear rubble in the blast-hit reactor buildings which humans cannot enter because of high radiation.

And France, which relies on nuclear power for three-quarters of its domestic energy needs, was sending an expert team from Areva, its state-run reactor maker, to assist TEPCO.

An official with Japan's nuclear safety agency said it was time to think outside the box.

"We are in an unprecedented situation, so we need to think about different strategies beyond what we normally think about," the official said.

Japan must pump water into reactors to stop them from overheating, even as highly radioactive runoff leaks out, halting crucial repair work and threatening the environment.

Iodine-131 detected in Pacific Ocean near the plant surged to a new high of 3,355 times the legal limit, compared to the previous top level of 1,850 times the legal maximum taken days ago.

"The figures are rising further," nuclear safety agency spokesman Hidehiko Nishiyama said.

"We need to find out as quickly as possible the cause and stop them from rising any higher."

Radioactive steam has also wafted into the air, contaminating regional farm and dairy produce, and last week led to elevated iodine levels in drinking water in Tokyo, 250 kilometres to the south west.

Japanese authorities have repeatedly stressed that none of the affected food products or water presents an immediate threat to human health, and that ocean currents will dilute radioactivity in the sea.

With crucial control room functions still disabled, experts are not sure what is happening inside the reactors, and some international experts have issued dire warnings that a meltdown may already be in progress.
