Wildlife: Where Have All the Bumble Bees Gone?

Scientists call it the Beepocalyspe. (OK, not scientists, but I like to call it that.) In late 2006, whole hives of honey bees began dying overnight for reasons that are still unclear. Scientists called it colony-collapse disorder (CCD), and it's as scary as it is mysterious. Adult bees simply leave the hive, ostensibly in search of pollen, only to die somewhere in the open. Reported death rates in bee colonies in the U.S. were 29% in 2009 and rose to 34% in 2010. (Data from the Department of Agriculture's CCD Progress Report—download a PDF here.) It's still unclear what's behind CCD—recent studies have suggested that it might be due to a combination of viral and fungal infections—but there's no doubt about the impact that sustained bee loss would have on the agricultural sector. About 130 crops in the U.S.—worth some $15 billion a year—depend on pollination from the honeybee alone in the U.S., and it's scary to think what might happen to the world food supply if CCD can't be curbed.
Get ready for more bad news—it's not just the honeybees that are disappearing. North American bumble bees have been steadily dwindling, vanishing from their long-established habitat. Bumble bees aren't as well-known as honeybees, but they're important pollinators as well, especially for tomatoes and berries. While there have been anecdotal reports from beekeepers and other observers about population declines for bumblebees, however there hasn't been the same concerted effort to track bumble bees. But a new paper published in the January 3 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) contains the results of a multiyear study of bumble bee populations, and the numbers are sobering. According to the study, written by a team of scientists including entomologist Sydney Cameron of the University of Illinois, the relative abundance of four species of bumble bees over the past few decades has dropped by more than 90%—and those disappearing species are also suffering from low genetic diversity, which makes them that much more susceptible to disease or any other environmental pressures. (Download a PDF of the paper here.)
As with CCD, it's not clear why bumble bee populations seem to be declining. Cameron and her colleagues note the possible role of a parasite called Nosema bombi that commonly found in Europe but which hasn't been fully studied among North American bumble bees. It's not a smoking gun, but the PNAS paper found that declining populations of bumble bee species were associated with high levels of parasite infection, while stable species were less likely to show frequent infection. Still, the authors write that the parasite could simply be more common in species that are declining—correlative, rather than causative.
Indeed, while studies like this one can help us get a grip on the problem of declining species, it's still not clear what's causing it—which makes the vanishing that much more eerie. On a day when authorities are trying to figure out why thousands of birds fell from the sky and thousands of fish died in the rivers in Arkansas, the bee study is a reminder of all the ways we may be impacting the natural world for the worse—without even knowing it.

Assessment of Radiofrequency Microwave Radiation
Emissions from Smart Meters
Sage Reports
Notice of Availability

Sage Associates has published an on-line report titled Assessment of Radiofrequency Microwave Radiation
Emissions from Smart Meters, dated January 1, 2011.

The Report is available for download at:

About the Report (from the website)
This Report is prepared in support of open discussion on radiofrequency microwave radiation levels (RF radiation levels) that are produced by wireless electric meters (i.e., smart meters) in California. There has been virtually no information made available to the public, nor to decision-makers on RF radiation levels. Significant unanswered questions still exist about what levels of radiofrequency microwave radiation will be produced by these meters.
This question has very important consequences for public health and welfare, because the public may be subjected to exposures at levels that either violate federal safety limits, or face chronic exposure levels that have already been associated with adverse health impacts, or both.
This Report uses computer modeling to predict power density levels that may be present where smart meters are in operation. The methodology used in this assessment is consistent with FCC OET 65 equations for prediction of RF power density levels. Many scenarios are modeled, to bracket the range of reasonably predictable RF exposures in typical living conditions. Many variables must be considered (installation very close to occupied space, how many meters are installed on a single wall, how frequently they will transmit an RF pulse, how powerful the RF radiation pulses will be, how far inside a home they will penetrate and at what intensities, how much 'piggybacking' of RF signals will occur from neighboring wireless meters, reflections that may increase RF levels, and what amount of RF wireless exposure may already be present beforehand, etc.)
To date, California's electric utilities have told the California Public Utilities Commission only that they will comply with applicable federal safety limits.  However, there are substantial discrepancies in what the FCC compliance testing says is needed for wireless meters to comply with their safety limits, and the manner in which many meters are being installed and are operating.
People may use this assessment to further their knowledge about wireless meters, using the tables that predict RF radiation levels, the tables that highlight potential violations of safety limits, and the health study-related tables showing RF radiation levels reported to pose health impacts. Although the authors expect there will be differences of opinion about the content of this report, we believe it will provide a basis for more educated decision-making and full disclosure of impacts.
The Report is not intended to be a substitute for disclosure of RF radiation levels by the CPUC and the electric utilities it regulates. They are responsible to the public to provide reliable and comprehensive information on impacts from wireless meters.

LVX to replace WIFI ?

Visible Light Communication Embedded within the visible light generated by LED (Light Emitting Diode) lamps are modulating light signals that communicate with other lamps and equipment that possess the same technology at ultra-high speeds. These devices when placed throughout a building or geographic area form a comprehensive wireless communication network capable of providing many services including energy savings, communications and security functions.

Most wireless communications today are produced from radio waves generated from electronic equipment. "WI-FI", "3G Networks" and "Bluetooth" are examples of this applied technology. They each have limitations in data transmission speeds.

B.C. groups join push to turn off Wi-Fi at schools

http://www.ctvbc.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20101018/bc_wifi_schools_101018/20101018?hub=BritishColumbiaHome

The call to get wireless internet technology out of schools is getting louder, as fears grow about the potential dangers the technology poses to children.

A growing number of organizations are pointing to cases and research claiming radiation emitted by Wi-Fi technology can cause a range of health problems, including headaches, an inability to concentrate and heart palpitations.

Sharon Noble, chair of Citizens Against UnSafe Emissions (CAUSE) based in Victoria B.C., says the small convenience Wi-Fi offers is not worth the risk.

"We want wired internet. It's safe. Parents think [Wi-Fi] is cutting edge technology and it's not."

As Noble and other organizations try to get the message out to parents and officials, a public school in Meaford, Ontario has become the first in Canada to shut down wireless internet.

Parent of students at St. Vincent Euphrasia elementary school voted "overwhelmingly" to cut off Wi-Fi, according to a statement released by the school's parent council on Monday.

Their decision comes after a group of Ontario parents dubbed the Simcoe County Safe School Committee spoke out against Wi-Fi in schools this summer.

Parents at Lucerne School in New Denver, B.C., are joining the fight, and are choosing to keep hardwired computer systems.

"We encourage other parents to look into the increasingly evident side effects of wireless routers and computers, particularly to children whose bodies and brains are still developing," said the New Denver Parent Children's Association in a statement.

The group and other affiliated organizations are urging people to bring the message to Parliament by signing a petition.

Opponents point to research on electromagnetic radiation by Dr. Magda Havas of Trent University, who is asking health officers in each province to issue a warning about the use of Wi-Fi in a school environment.

While Health Canada says there is no "scientific evidence" that Wi-Fi in the classroom is dangerous to children, Havas says the federal guidelines need to be questioned because "the evidence so strongly indicates this form of radiation is harmful."

Noble says Health Canada "isn't doing its job", and wonders why there is such a push to go wireless with all the questions out there about health risks.

"Why does a kindergarten child need a laptop?" she asks.

Currently, the main sources of public exposure to electromagnetic fields are mobile phones, which currently outnumber the number of citizens of the European Union. 67% of Europeans consider that the signals emitted by the antennas of mobile telephony and to some extent affect their health and 58% of the population believes that the authorities do not adequately protect the public from the risks associated with exposure According to the report Electromagnetic Fields, published in June this year by Eurobarometer and the European Commission has made reference to Dr. Alejandro Úbeda, Bioelectromagnetics Section Chief of Hospital Ramón y Cajal de Madrid, during his speech in New Risks public health, which has taken place in the framework of the Sixth National Conference on Health Journalism.

Úbeda emphasized the lack of training and correct and complete information to determine the true impact of mobile phone use in the development of brain tumors. "Although several meta-analysis have provided some evidence that using mobile phones for over ten years could double the risk of being diagnosed with certain brain tumors, the inherent limitations of epidemiological methodology can not yet know for sure if the repeated and prolonged use Mobile is a risk factor. SVE Parents Vote to Remove Wi-Fi

Saturday, 16 October 2010 08:29 By Stephen Vance, Staff

http://www.themeafordindependent.ca/home/in-the-schools/967-sve-parents-vote-to-remove-wi-fi

Meaford's St. Vincent Euphrasia Elementary School (SVE) elected Parent Council announced in a media release on Friday that its parents have voted to turn off the school's WiFi transmitters, and connect to the internet with hard-wires.

The media release issued indicates that SVE is the first school in Ontario to vote in favour of shutting down the in-school wifi system.

"After learning the whole story about risks for their children, the parents voted to protect their children's health," said Andrew Couper in the release. Couper is a father of two children at the school and a member of the School Council.

Concern about the use of wifi in Bluewater District schools began gaining momentum toward the end of the last school year.

At the Bluewater & District School Board (BWSB) meeting on Tuesday, June 15, 2010 the WiFi Advisory Committee to St. Vincent Euphrasia Elementary School Parent Council urged the BWSB to err on the side of caution and remove the Wi-Fi until a study could be done on children's long term exposure to low level microwave radiation (Wi-Fi) and the biological effects.

The group asked the board to return to using the existing wires in each classroom which would be of no additional cost, and the internet would continue uninterrupted as it was a few years ago, prior to the installation of the wireless routers.

The request to the board was denied at that time although since then the movement to pull wifi from the schools until more can be learned about the potential health effects seems to have gained the support of at least one school board trustee.

Paul Wehrle, Trustee for Meaford & The Blue Mountains told The Independent in September, that "While I suggest I would follow the precautionary principle and remove WiFi until we are absolutely certain of its safety, I am one vote among 10."

At the beginning of the new school year, the SVE School Council sent home a microwave-exposure consent form with to all parents of students at the school. It explained to parents that although the School Board claims WiFi is safe according the Health Canada, there is a large body of science that shows biological changes can happen, especially to children, when they are exposed to low levels of microwave radiation.  The school Wifi operates on microwave radiation.

According to the press release, parents across Canada have reported that their children are developing an odd assortment of symptoms since Wifi microwave transmitters were installed in their schools. In Simcoe Country an unusual number of children have developed Tachycardia which is a sudden racing heart beat, since that Board installed blanket Wifi systems in their schools.

In an effort to assure parents all is safe, the Bluewater School Board commissioned LEX Scientific Inc. from Guelph to measure the microwave levels in its schools. However in its report the engineering firm warned that Health Canada's guidelines only protect against heating the body from microwaves, and that no guidelines actually exist for exposing children to low level microwave radiation all day long. Studies have shown it can cause health problems and children are especially vulnerable.

The School Council provided all parents with a list of the biological effects that have been shown to happen at these "low levels" and parents voted resoundingly (88%) to stop exposing their children to the unnecessary microwaves.

Contacted by phone Couper told The Independent that 210 letters were sent home to SVE parents, and that 70 parents (33%) returned votes on the issue 62 of whom wanted the wifi turned off, and the remaining eight were comfortable with leaving the wifi in operation.

"Once parents realized that the computers still connect to the internet with hard-wires, and turning off WiFi transmitters won't change the way their kids connect at school, they decided it's not worth the risk," said Couper., "Parents don't want to wonder whether those headaches, or that nausea, or that racing heart rate is being caused by the WiFi system in their child's school."

The news is heartening for SVE parent Angela Klein who has removed her daughter from the school due to the evidence of health effects from microwave radiation. Klein has said that her daughter will not return to the school until the wifi system is shut down, and she is home-schooling her daughter until that happens.

A phone call to SVE Principal Oscar Burnside on Friday confirmed that the parents had voted in favour of shutting down the wifi system in the school, however according to Burnside, the school's hands are tied and they cannot take that action unless instructed by the Board to do so.

"The school has no authority to turn the wifi on or off, that is up to the Board," said Burnside.

"The Board has heard the will of the parents. We understand this is an unnecessary risk and we want it off. I hope the Board does the right thing now and turns it off," said Klein.

On Sunday evening Global Television will be airing a special two-part documentary about the wifi issue and the potential health effects of children being exposed to the radiation in schools on their "16:9" program.

Letter to several Members of the Parliament of Canada

Dear Honourable Members of Parliament,

As a resident of Toronto, and a tax-paying voting citizen of Canada, I am gravely concerned about the health implications of the recent proliferation of cell towers and transmitters carpeting  the country and specifically Toronto.

In the last few years cell towers have been mushrooming across the city to accommodate growing demand for mobile phone reception. With growing competition from all the new companies, since January 2010, the power and frequencies emitted by all towers has been substantially increased.

In March of this year, I had to sell my home in the St.Clair and Dufferin area of Toronto because of the sudden concentration of cell towers, antennas and transmitters that went up after the deregulation of the industry. Shortly after January of 2010, we began to experience strange headaches, tinnitus, earaches, sleeplessness and nausea. We were living less than 100 metres from a Bell cell tower, as well as less than 100 metres from antennas from approximately 4 companies, placed on the roofs of buildings along St.Clair.

After contacting every level of municipal, provincial and federal government appealing for changes to the standards by which they allow towers and transmitters in residential areas, I was appalled to learn that nobody is adequately protecting the public's health in this regard. I had to sell my house at great cost and upheaval to my life and career. It took me months to find a home that I could afford in Toronto that was not within less than 100 metres or so to some kind of cell tower or antenna.

In June I purchased a home in a quiet residential area in East York at St.Clair and Victoria Park . For a few months I felt like life was back to normal without the constant discomfort of headaches and all the other strange symptoms.

Unfortunately to my horror, new cell transmitters and antennas have been installed all over the area by all the various new telecom companies in the last few weeks and months, and again we have begun to experience severe headaches, ear-aches, tinnitus, nausea and sleep disturbances.

I cannot afford to sell my new house and move again. As a resident of this city and country, is it not my right to be able to live safely without this kind of dangerous exposure?

I am a healthy adult. If I am having such severe effects from short term exposure to being close to cell towers, transmitters and antennas, I would hate to think what the short and long term effects are on children, babies, teens, pregnant women, or those who might have other pre-existing health issues. There are several schools within a few blocks from these areas, and the neighbourhood is home to mostly families with small children and the elderly.

This is relatively new technology with no long term studies proving that exposure is safe.

Unfortunately, the general public is being constantly exposed to the EMF's whether or not they choose to use the technology, and have no say in the matter.

The microwaves that are emitted from these towers and antennas is known to be carcinogenic at certain levels, and linked to numerous insidious health issues.

I am appealing to you as representatives of the people of Canada to take this issue very seriously.

The human body cannot sustain this kind of cumulative exposure. Along with all the other usual stresses of urban living, this could very well be the tipping point towards an epidemic of disease.

We are currently being exposed to levels of radio and microwave frequency that have never been experienced in human history.

The standards that have been set by Health Canada (Safety Code 6) for safe levels of public exposure are far lower than those set by most European countries, and those standards are poorly and intermittently regulated here by Industry Canada. They are also laughably archaic and were implemented decades before cell phones became ubiquitous and the general public was being exposed to microwaves at the levels we are today.

Quoting Health Canada below, I wonder what kind of adverse health effects the general population will have to start experiencing before Health Canada actually is "convinced of increased risk of disease from exposure to RF energy".

"Health Canada staff are committed to protecting the health and well-being of all Canadians. One of the cornerstones of the scientific method is a continuous process of review, criticism and reappraisal of the body of scientific knowledge. Health Canada staff actively prescribe to and participate in this process. There is to date no convincing scientific evidence to support the occurrence of adverse health effects at levels below the exposure limits specified in Safety Code 6.

This conclusion is based upon the bulk of scientific evidence from animal, in-vitro cellular and epidemiological studies that have been carried out worldwide, including at our laboratory. There is no convincing evidence of increased risk of disease from exposure to RF energy from cellular base stations and wireless network devices."

Interesting that while Health Canada purports that this technology and the resulting exposure is safe, the insurance companies will not cover the telecommunication industry for liability due to health risks. Have the insurance companies not also been placated by Health Canada and told that daily and cumulative exposure is perfectly safe?

Should this technology be proven to indeed increase the risk of disease, who is then legally liable for failing to protect the public?

I would appreciate a response to these questions.
Sincerely,

Michelle Lewin

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or ALS

http://www.cbc.ca/health/story/2010/10/15/veterans-als-support.html

Canadian Forces veterans with Lou Gehrig's disease are now eligible for disability benefits, treatments and home-care support, Veterans Affairs Minister Jean-Pierre Blackburn announced Friday.

The new benefits mean veterans living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, a progressive and fatal neuromuscular disease, will now be eligible for adapted wheelchairs, medical resources, housekeeping services and more, Blackburn said.

Veterans with ALS have long fought the government to receive benefits.

Blackburn said they should "concentrate all their energy on fighting this terrible disease rather than fighting to obtain the benefits and financial support they have earned."

The announcement came two days after the funeral of Brian Dyck, a 42-year-old veteran of the 1991 Gulf War who suffered from ALS — and was a fierce advocate of ALS benefits.

In February, the Ottawa resident's claim for benefits and a pension for his wife and daughter was rejected. Weeks before his death on Oct. 8, his appeal was allowed and his wife and child will receive benefits.

Two months ago, Dyck attended a news conference as part of a small group of angry veterans who accused the government of failing them. At that event, Dyck struggled for breath because of the ALS.

Blackburn said Friday it was that event and Dyck's dramatic story that had attuned him to the problems some vets faced. The problem, the minister said, was that there was no medical evidence linking ALS to military service, and that's why benefits were being denied. Blackburn couldn't say what new medical evidence he has seen, but he said the government has changed its mind.

"Never again do I want to hear of a veteran with ALS who has expended his last ounces of energy fighting for the help he deserves," the minister said.

At Blackburn's side Friday was another Canadian veteran dealing with ALS. Mike Watson spent 21 years in the navy, and the past six years slowly losing his health.

He needs a motorized wheelchair to get around — one that cost him $35,000. He uses a microphone and amplifier to speak.

Watson is one of 38 veterans who now could be eligible for benefits because they have ALS. He called that a relief, stating: "At least I know my family will be looked after, after I'm gone."

With the new benefits, "veterans living with ALS now have one less hurdle to face on an already difficult road," said David Cameron, president of the ALS Society of Canada.

"Because of the progressive nature of the disease, some veterans were dying before they had the chance to submit their case to [Veterans Affairs.]"

Lori Penner

New electrical meters raise hackles of critics concerned with health risks and privacy

By: CLARKE CANFIELD
Associated Press

http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/economy/new-electrical-meters-raise-hackles-of-critics-concerned-with-health-risks-and-privacy-104982939.html
PORTLAND, MAINE — Power companies say new "smart meter" technology will cut energy use, benefit the environment and allow utilities to pinpoint problems during power outages more quickly.

But critics say the technology poses health risks and raises concerns about privacy and security.

Various studies say there's little or no evidence to suggest that exposure to radio frequencies from wireless network devices, such as the so-called smart meters, constitute health threats. But that's not stopping an outcry from smart-meter opponents who say additional investigation is warranted.

In Maine, dissenters have sent dozens of e-mails and letters to regulators and health officials just as the state's largest utility, Central Maine Power Co., begins its smart-meter rollout. A louder protest has come in California, where cities have passed moratoriums on the meters, demonstrators have blocked installation of the devices, and regulators have received thousands of complaints.

Smart meters have been linked to reports of dizziness, nausea, migraines, muscle spasms and insomnia, said Elisa Boxer-Cook, a vocal critic who wants CMP to stop installing the meters pending further study. Some people are concerned the meters might have more serious long-term effects, such as cancer, she said.

"The science is so unclear at this point that we don't want to blanket entire neighborhoods with radiation while scientists are debating this," said Boxer-Cook, of Scarborough.

But Dr. Dora Anne Mills, director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said based on the information she's seen, the meters aren't any more dangerous than wireless Internet routers and cordless telephones.

"Some of the analogies I've seen by opponents say it's like having a cell phone tower on the side of your house," Mills said. "It's more analogous to having a cell phone or a router or a cordless phone on the side of your house."

The new meters measure electricity used in homes and businesses, but instead of using gears and dials they use digital technology that records a wealth of information. CMP's meters contain small antennas that transmit data to larger antennas placed on utility poles and eventually on to CMP headquarters in Augusta.

The utility says the meters provide customers with real-time information on electrical usage and in time will allow power suppliers to offer consumers options for variable pricing or time-of-use rates.

Nationwide, smart meters have been installed in an estimated 10 million to 20 million homes, according to the Edison Electric Institute, a Washington, D.C., trade group that represents utilities. More than 65 million homes nationwide are expected to have them by 2020.

In California, one of the first states to see smart meters, a number of municipalities have enacted ordinances delaying their installation.

Two members of the state assembly have asked the California Council on Science & Technology - a nonpartisan, not-for-profit corporation that offers expert advice to the state government on science and technology-related policy issues - to determine whether FCC standards applied to smart meters are sufficient and if there are other possible health risks based on the cumulative impact of radiation exposure.

John Leopold, a member of the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors, said he's never seen an issue generate as many calls, letters and e-mails. The board last month unanimously approved a smart-meter moratorium through year's end.

"I'm concerned about what we don't know," Leopold said. "I haven't seen any scientific information that would lead me to believe there's a problem, but there are significant questions."

CMP, which last month began the two-year job of installing 620,000 meters, says smart meter signals resemble those of cell phones, cordless phones and walkie-talkies, except at lower frequency levels while transmitting for only a few minutes each day.

"We don't believe there's a risk," said CMP spokesman John Carroll.

The meters should also help the environment, he said. CMP estimates the meters will reduce about 2 million miles of driving a year by its meter readers, whose jobs are being eliminated.

But those assurances haven't been enough for dozens of people who have written to Maine Public Advocate Richard Davies, who represents consumers. In response, Davies asked Mills to look into the matter.

Most of the critics are concerned about health risks, Davies said, but a small number are also worried that the system might be penetrated by hackers who could access private information.

"People didn't know this was coming and once the news hit the newspaper, all these people who had health concerns about electromagnetic fields and other sources radiation all of the sudden are concerned that this isn't some distant problem - it's going to be on their house soon," he said.

Subject: Wireless industry warns of 'traffic jam' as more use smart phones, tablet computers

Dear Keith,

In yesterday's Times Colonist the 'linked' article speaks to the need for another spectrum sale by the Canadian govt. to offer more frequencies to accommodate the new iphones and blackberrys. Just coincidentally this will also raise billions of dollars for the federal coffers. The sale could take place as early as this fall.

It is irresponsible for the government to aid the proliferation of wireless technology while the HESA committee is investigating the health hazards associated with these devices. I am circulating this information to many, asking that letters be sent to the HESA committee members asking that this auction sale be halted until the safety of wireless technology be proven.

As was presented to the HESA Committee in April, Safety Code 6 is outdated and in no way provides protection against radiation emitted by any of the wireless technology. No reputable, independent scientist is saying that non-thermal radiation is safe yet Health Canada and Industry Canada continue to allow transmitters to be placed near homes and schools, and new phones, blueberrys, WiFi, etc. to be sold widely, including to children. It is long overdue for responsible politicians to join with the growing numbers of Canadians demanding a biologically based guideline and new wireless technology that can be used without causing harm. I am asking you, as my MP, to represent my interest and the interests of many of those in your riding, to present this issue to the Parliament and demand that this auction be delayed until confirmation of safety is available.

Petition to Parliament

Dear Citizens for Safe Technology:

I have been asked to appear before the Parliamentary Health & Safety Committee to speak to the issue of children being irradiated in schools from Wi-Fi devices.

I would like to present our Petition to Parliament with as many signatures as possible, representing the growing numbers of Canadians who want to err on the side of caution for their children and use hard wired connections to computers in schools. This cautionary approach would also protect teachers and non-teaching staff in schools.

You can help by simply printing out this Petition and carrying it with you as you go about your day, asking those who are concerned about this issue to sign. If you have are able to post the petition in an office or place of business for signatures, this is also a great idea;  some of you may know how to post to Facebook as another method of gathering signatures.

Petitions can be faxed, mailed or collected by me prior to my departure for Ottawa, which could happen any time between October 27 and November 2.

Thank you so much for being part of the solution.

Wireless worrisome: professor

By PETER HENDRA, THE WHIG-STANDARD

http://www.thewhig.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=2799146

Dr. Magda Havas believes that wireless Internet networks now present in schools will someday go the way of asbestos.

"I think we're going to find out that it's harmful," said Havas, a professor of environmental and resource studies at Trent University.

"It's going to start with kids in schools because they're the most sensitive. A lot of schools are now putting Wi-Fi in despite warnings that they shouldn't, they're just going ahead and doing it. What's happening in Barrie is just the tip of the iceberg, and it's going to start happening in more and more schools."

Havas -- who was in the city Wednesday to address the Canadian Federation of University Women, Kingston Club, on the biological effects of electromagnetic "pollution" -- stepped into the public spotlight this summer as she came to the defence of parents in Barrie who wanted wireless networks removed from their schools.

The students had been complaining that they were having, among other things, trouble concentrating, insomnia, rashes, hyperactivity, forgetfulness, depression and racing heart rates while in the school.

When the students who didn't have Wi-Fi at home were away from their classrooms, those symptoms disappeared.

"As kids begin to have these heart problems, they're going to say, 'Let's stop, let's reconsider this,' " she said.

"And they'll be ripping out Wi- Fi like we've been ripping out asbestos. I have no doubt it's going to happen, I just don't know when. It could be five years from now, or 10 years from now."

What the children were displaying were symptoms of what's called "electrohypersensitivity." Everyone is electrosensitive, she said, but some more so than others.

"Our hearts are electromagnetic, our brains are electromagnetic, we're electromagnetic beings," she said.

"So the concept is if there's this radiation outside your body, is it interfering with the radiation your body's generating? And I think the answer is it could definitely interfere, but it's a hard thing to prove."

Havas, who has been studying the effects of electromagnetic radiation for the past 15 years, believes that wireless technological devices should have to pass a series of safety tests before they are allowed on the market, much like the extensive trials a new pharmaceutical drug has to undergo.

While Havas herself carries a cellphone, when she travels, she uses it reluctantly and rarely hands out her number.

If you do have to use a cellphone, she said, texting is safer than talking because the user holds the device away from his or her body.

But it's not just cellphones that are a problem. In fact, another type of phone -- the cordless variety -- is one of the worst culprits around the average household in emitting small doses of radiation, she said.

Even a baby monitor, used so that parents can keep an ear on their child while in another room, is a health hazard, Havas said.

"It's actually worse than the cordless phone or wireless router," she said.

To illustrate her point, she waves a hand-held electromagnetic radiation detector around the room and just a faint buzz can be heard. After she turns on the baby monitor, however, the detector sounds like a Geiger counter waved above a nuclear fuel rod.

Other sources of "dirty electricity" around the average household, Havas said, are wireless alarm systems and the new smart meters, which are now finding their way into people's basements.

And if you like to play video games with a wireless controller, Havas suggests you plug it into the console instead.

"Wires are usually shielded because the company doesn't want the message inside the wire to be corrupted," she said.

To play it safer, Havas suggests connecting your computer to the Internet using a cable rather than a wireless router, and using a phone with a cord.

Another way to protect oneself is your clothing, or, more specifically, what's underneath your clothing. For the more adventurous, one can now buy silver- stitched gitch to be worn over their normal undergarments that shields one's insides from harm.

"Basically what is happening is it's microwave madness," she said, "What is happening is we're thinking, 'We can do this, we can do this, we can do this.' "

Havas hopes that people will become aware of the new hazards of new technology.

"It's really critical that we minimize our exposure in all of our environments, particularly the home, the bedroom and the school," she said.

"And if people start showing symptoms of this, instead of giving them pills to deal with the depression or the sleeplessness or the pain, examine the environment, get rid of what you can and see if the symptoms go away."

'Blinded' Satellite Gains Ground in Radio Interference Battle

The radio interference is plaguing the European Space Agency's Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity satellite, which launched in November 2009 to study Earth's water cycle. But shortly after it began transmitting, project scientists noticed that over certain areas, radio-frequency interference was badly contaminating the data.

This is interesting - this excerpt is particularly intriguing:

"Health Canada gave the thumbs up years ago to a not-so-mobile device that exposes a patient's brain to a large magnetic field. It's used to treat those suffering depression who aren't responding well to drug therapy."

So Health Canada says that there's no known mechanism that would account for electrohypersensitivity from EMR, but they approve an electromagnetic device that affects the brain in an ostensibly positive manner?. A bit contradictory?

Here's the blog article and link:

http://blogs.itbusiness.ca/2010/07/magnetic-fields-have-undeniable-effect-on-the-brain/

Magnetic fields have undeniable effect on the brain

Imagine this scenario in a doctor's office of the future.

You walk in to visit your family doctor and complain that you're suffering from depression. Your doctor agrees, but instead of prescribing you Prozac, she instead hands you an electronic gadget in the shape of a wand – much like a metal detector used by airport security – she tells you to point it at a specific area of your head and turn it on for 10 minutes, twice a day. The magnetic field will zap away your depression and leave you feeling relaxed instead.

It sounds like sci-fi techno-wizardry, but this sort of treatment may very well be a viable future treatment for sufferers of depression in 10 or 20 years if the research of Dr. Alex Thomas and other scientists like him takes off. Personal devices might be a possible future, but repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) treatment is a reality in Canada today.

Thomas is a scientist with London, Ont.-based Lawson Health Research Institute. He's also the founder of Fralex Therapeutics Inc., which was bought last year by Baylis Medical Company Inc.

Health Canada gave the thumbs up years ago to a not-so-mobile device that exposes a patient's brain to a large magnetic field. It's used to treat those suffering depression who aren't responding well to drug therapy. It's no quack science – there are 1390 medial research papers available on rTMS on PubMed, a collection of international research hosted by the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

Now Thomas is working on a different approach to rTMS. Instead of exposing the entire brain to a large magnetic field, he wants to target specific areas of the brain with weaker and more focused magnetic fields. The research has implications for therapeutic practices, but I think it also raises questions about the safety of cell phones.

"We're trying to create a gradient field that will create a virtual lesion, to numb a specific area of the brain or to hyperstimulate it," Thomas says.

In essence, the weak magnetic pulses act like a maestro to the brain's neurons. When it is turned on, the neurons fire synchronously and when it turns off, the neurons stop firing. Repeated pulses can turn a brain that is in chaos back into a brain that is ordered and coordinated.

"I would expect to see regulatory approval and marketing occur in the European Union in the foreseeable future," Thomas says. Fralex is also seeking approval in Canada, and Baylis is producing a therapeutic unit based on the weaker pulse method.

The side effects of this therapy should be tame when compared to pharmacology, which affects the entire body, Thomas argues. But there are some known side effects. Since the pulse aims to reduce emotional pain, people receiving the pulse therapy tend to feel an effect of relaxation.

Anecdotally, the side effects go further than that, Thomas says. Some volunteers after receiving five to 10 minutes of exposure are unable to thing of any one single thing that bothers them.

Now that sounds fine when you're talking about a clinical therapy method. But it becomes creepy when you realize our cell phones generate the same sort of electromagnetic fields that these rTMS devices do. You have to wonder if we're unknowingly numbing ourselves into a relaxed state of apathy.

It's not an easy question to answer, Thomas says. Because adequate research hasn't been done to fully understand the effect of long term exposure on the brain.

"We still can't say what the level of exposure that produces objective or subjective effects in humans actually is, and we're one of the major centres in the world actually testing this," he says. "I'm in a position to fear monger if I wanted too. You can't prove a negative, all we can do is examine and come up with a scientific best guess at what the effects might be."

If Thomas has demonstrated that weak magnetic fields can have a measurable and predictable effect on the human brain, then serious questions must be raised about cell phones that produce similar fields. Some initial research into cell phone safety indicates there is a potential human health risk, especially for children.

Electromagnetic fields from cell phones penetrate living tissue and seep into the brain. We just haven't been using cell phones long enough to know exactly what this might be doing to us.

Cell Phone Radiation Inhibits Estrogen And Cancer

October 9th, 2010 Posted in Disease & Illness

http://www.asanway.com:80/disease-illness/55983-cell-phone-radiation-inhibits-estrogen-and-cancer/

Studies have also shown that electromagnetic radiation inhibits the production of a hormone called melatonin. Melatonin regulates the sleep cycle and is secreted by the pineal gland in the brain. It is produced about 90 minutes after falling asleep. Consequently, melatonin levels rise at night and remain low during the day. Melatonin has many useful effects but the most common is that of regulating the sleep cycle. When cell phone radiation, or other EMR, inhibits this important hormone the sleep cycle is compromised. Could this be one reason why so many people today have insomnia? Could the multitude of sleep problems in America today be a result of all the radiation in our environment? Should we remove the cordless phone or clock radio from the nightstand near our bed? Common sense would say so.

Why is this important? If the body doesn't reach the deeper phases of sleep during the night it cannot repair itself. Cells will not have a chance to rejuvenate and repair. Sleep is necessary for this repair process to occur. Yet today 81% of young people 15 to 20 years of age sleep with their cell phone on! Considering the value of melatonin to our health the implications of this statistic cannot be overstated.

A study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that a woman's risk of breast cancer increased up to 60% if she routinely worked a nighttime shift. Men's risk of prostate cancer also increased. How does this occur? Light raises cortisol levels. Cortisol is produced by the adrenal gland which is activated by light. Light furthermore inhibits production of melatonin by the pineal gland in the brain. So the combination of increased cortisol, which suppresses our immune system, and decreased melatonin, which suppresses tumor development leads to conditions favorable for the potential development of cancer. Melatonin is also a known regulator of estrogen. So when melatonin isn't produced in adequate amounts one of the body's natural mechanisms to suppress estrogen is removed and estrogen dominance results.

Another important function of melatonin is that it is a powerful antioxidant and is very efficient in destroying free radicals. Destruction of free radicals and proper DNA synthesis allows our cells to function properly. One of the known effects of free radicals is premature aging and one of the ways free radicals are produced is from environmental toxins that include EMR.

Melatonin also enhances the immune system. It does this is through its ability to increase the activity of the immune system's killer lymphocytes. Additionally, melatonin also strengthens the ability of Vitamin D to stop tumor growth. In fact, the tumor-fighting ability of Vitamin D is strengthened by 20 to 100 times.

A study published in the Journal of Pineal Research in 2007 reported on the therapeutic effects of melatonin in treating cognitive impairment such as that found in Alzheimer' disease, dementia, etc. Results showed significantly better improvement in patients treated with melatonin. As we can see melatonin is important for many reasons. Any disruptive influence, like electromagnetic radiation, that would suppress or limit the body's ability to produce melatonin could have serious health implications for each of us.

A 2001 study done at Japan's National Institute for Environmental Studies revealed that breast cancer cells treated with melatonin would resume growing when exposed to electromagnetic radiation! Findings showed that the cells' signaling system was disrupted, impeding or preventing cell-to-cell communication. Thus, cells were not able to communicate effectively with each other and this affected their ability to respond to environmental challenges and threats.

Perhaps one of the most important functions of melatonin is that it inhibits the release of estrogen and suppresses the development of breast cancer. Seventy percent of breast cancers today are estrogen sensitive. When EMR inhibits the release of melatonin the activity of one of the body's most protective hormones is lost. Additionally, other studies have shown that reduced levels of melatonin from electromagnetic radiation suppression have caused a number of other malignancies including prostate cancer, melanoma, and ovarian cancer.

A causal link between breast cancer and EMR continues to be reported. Dr. Patricia Coogan at Boston University of Public Health reported a forty-three per cent increased risk for breast cancer for women who worked in occupations where exposure to magnetic fields occurred. Such occupations included electricians, power line workers, phone installation workers, electrical engineers and those working near mainframe computers. This increased risk has been directly linked to the suppression of melatonin by EMR.

There is also concern that this increased risk of breast cancer is not confined to women. As much as a six-fold increase in male breast cancer has been found among men who work in the utilities industries, in switching stations and as telephone lineman.

Subject: Transmitting Meters

I would not be contacting you and researching this subject  if I had not become ill from the pulsing microwave radiation coming from the transmitting electric meter that Con Ed put on my house.

I know exactly what happened to me.

Just as with lead, mercury, asbestos, tobacco, etc.  this is going to come out.  The digital electric meters pulse a chaotic high level of microwave radiation many times per minute 24/7  on to our home wiring and outside our homes throughout our neighborhoods.  I have measured it.

This technology HAS NEVER BEEN TESTED ON BIOLOGICAL LIFE. You have allowed this to spread across the state and it is a disaster.

It would be better to prove that the meters are safe before allowing this to continue instead of having citizens prove the meters are dangerous after they become ill.

Thank you.

Radio transmissions are a form of electromagnetism, one of the four fundamental forces of nature. The force carrier for electromagetism is the photon.

The photons transmitted from the antenna of a cell phone when a person is talking on the cell phone have a high frequency because their wave length is very short.

The energy level of such photons is proportional to their frequency and is, therefore, high. When a person is talking on a cell phone, those high energy photons are being absorbed by the person's head.

Years ago, I was a ham radio operator and never had to worry about the electromagnetic radiation generated by my ham radio because the antenna was located 60 feet above my body and the frequency of the radiation was low. I do not recall any concerns about the electromagnetic radiation generated by ham radios.

But times have changed! Because cell phones generate such high frequency, high energy photons, I have chosen not to use them.
