Cell Phone Radiation Inhibits Estrogen And Cancer

October 9th, 2010 Posted in Disease & Illness

http://www.asanway.com:80/disease-illness/55983-cell-phone-radiation-inhibits-estrogen-and-cancer/

Studies have also shown that electromagnetic radiation inhibits the production of a hormone called melatonin. Melatonin regulates the sleep cycle and is secreted by the pineal gland in the brain. It is produced about 90 minutes after falling asleep. Consequently, melatonin levels rise at night and remain low during the day. Melatonin has many useful effects but the most common is that of regulating the sleep cycle. When cell phone radiation, or other EMR, inhibits this important hormone the sleep cycle is compromised. Could this be one reason why so many people today have insomnia? Could the multitude of sleep problems in America today be a result of all the radiation in our environment? Should we remove the cordless phone or clock radio from the nightstand near our bed? Common sense would say so.

Why is this important? If the body doesn't reach the deeper phases of sleep during the night it cannot repair itself. Cells will not have a chance to rejuvenate and repair. Sleep is necessary for this repair process to occur. Yet today 81% of young people 15 to 20 years of age sleep with their cell phone on! Considering the value of melatonin to our health the implications of this statistic cannot be overstated.

A study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that a woman's risk of breast cancer increased up to 60% if she routinely worked a nighttime shift. Men's risk of prostate cancer also increased. How does this occur? Light raises cortisol levels. Cortisol is produced by the adrenal gland which is activated by light. Light furthermore inhibits production of melatonin by the pineal gland in the brain. So the combination of increased cortisol, which suppresses our immune system, and decreased melatonin, which suppresses tumor development leads to conditions favorable for the potential development of cancer. Melatonin is also a known regulator of estrogen. So when melatonin isn't produced in adequate amounts one of the body's natural mechanisms to suppress estrogen is removed and estrogen dominance results.

Another important function of melatonin is that it is a powerful antioxidant and is very efficient in destroying free radicals. Destruction of free radicals and proper DNA synthesis allows our cells to function properly. One of the known effects of free radicals is premature aging and one of the ways free radicals are produced is from environmental toxins that include EMR.

Melatonin also enhances the immune system. It does this is through its ability to increase the activity of the immune system's killer lymphocytes. Additionally, melatonin also strengthens the ability of Vitamin D to stop tumor growth. In fact, the tumor-fighting ability of Vitamin D is strengthened by 20 to 100 times.

A study published in the Journal of Pineal Research in 2007 reported on the therapeutic effects of melatonin in treating cognitive impairment such as that found in Alzheimer' disease, dementia, etc. Results showed significantly better improvement in patients treated with melatonin. As we can see melatonin is important for many reasons. Any disruptive influence, like electromagnetic radiation, that would suppress or limit the body's ability to produce melatonin could have serious health implications for each of us.

A 2001 study done at Japan's National Institute for Environmental Studies revealed that breast cancer cells treated with melatonin would resume growing when exposed to electromagnetic radiation! Findings showed that the cells' signaling system was disrupted, impeding or preventing cell-to-cell communication. Thus, cells were not able to communicate effectively with each other and this affected their ability to respond to environmental challenges and threats.

Perhaps one of the most important functions of melatonin is that it inhibits the release of estrogen and suppresses the development of breast cancer. Seventy percent of breast cancers today are estrogen sensitive. When EMR inhibits the release of melatonin the activity of one of the body's most protective hormones is lost. Additionally, other studies have shown that reduced levels of melatonin from electromagnetic radiation suppression have caused a number of other malignancies including prostate cancer, melanoma, and ovarian cancer.

A causal link between breast cancer and EMR continues to be reported. Dr. Patricia Coogan at Boston University of Public Health reported a forty-three per cent increased risk for breast cancer for women who worked in occupations where exposure to magnetic fields occurred. Such occupations included electricians, power line workers, phone installation workers, electrical engineers and those working near mainframe computers. This increased risk has been directly linked to the suppression of melatonin by EMR.

There is also concern that this increased risk of breast cancer is not confined to women. As much as a six-fold increase in male breast cancer has been found among men who work in the utilities industries, in switching stations and as telephone lineman.

Subject: Transmitting Meters

I would not be contacting you and researching this subject  if I had not become ill from the pulsing microwave radiation coming from the transmitting electric meter that Con Ed put on my house.

I know exactly what happened to me.

Just as with lead, mercury, asbestos, tobacco, etc.  this is going to come out.  The digital electric meters pulse a chaotic high level of microwave radiation many times per minute 24/7  on to our home wiring and outside our homes throughout our neighborhoods.  I have measured it.

This technology HAS NEVER BEEN TESTED ON BIOLOGICAL LIFE. You have allowed this to spread across the state and it is a disaster.

It would be better to prove that the meters are safe before allowing this to continue instead of having citizens prove the meters are dangerous after they become ill.

Thank you.

Some of your favorite foods contain built-in pesticides that 'resist pests' – a euphemism for 'contains its own pesticide'. Radio transmissions are a form of electromagnetism, one of the four fundamental forces of nature. The force carrier for electromagetism is the photon.

The photons transmitted from the antenna of a cell phone when a person is talking on the cell phone have a high frequency because their wave length is very short.

The energy level of such photons is proportional to their frequency and is, therefore, high. When a person is talking on a cell phone, those high energy photons are being absorbed by the person's head.

Years ago, I was a ham radio operator and never had to worry about the electromagnetic radiation generated by my ham radio because the antenna was located 60 feet above my body and the frequency of the radiation was low. I do not recall any concerns about the electromagnetic radiation generated by ham radios.

But times have changed! Because cell phones generate such high frequency, high energy photons, I have chosen not to use them.

Dear Mr. Wehrle:

I agree with your excellent article except for one blaring fallacy, regarding the extant science and criteria therefor. You say:

"Neither of these influences has anything to do with health, but they are significant factors in any decision Health Canada will make. I suggest that to overcome those two influences there will have to be irrefutable and overwhelming evidence of harm and that level of evidence does not yet exist."

First, how unfortunate that the Precautionary Principle, which is international law, and to which Canadian federal law further subscribes, ought not in your view apply. This said, I have long observed the Precautionary Principle to be disregarded by public officials in all of North America, as if the US and Canada were not signatories, which they in fact are. Do you truly not recognize this law? If so, please tell, whyever not?

Secondly, I am absolutely astonished you would assert that irrefutable and overwhelming evidence of harm does not exist, while admitting this is not your field of expertise, and after I showed you a very full and quantitative literature review of the infrastructural-level scientific literature of the past twenty+ years.

Perhaps you have confused this literature with that relating to cell phone usage, which my former mentor Devra Lee Davis cites as internally inconclusive on account of industry influence?

These respective, very disparate scientific literatures must not be confused, differing as they do by the following essential factors.

Infrastructural studies v. cell phone usage studies:

  a. Primarily far-field v. primarily near-field exposures;

  b. Measured power density exposure levels v. estimated, absorbed dosages as SAR;

  c. Primarily chronic, longterm, even maximal and permanent duration v. primarily short and intermittent durations;

  d. Primarily involuntary, government-forced, unavoidable v. primarily voluntary, avoidable exposures;

  e. All humans, animals and plants v. primarily healthy, financially capable*, competent adults and their older children

* Capable enough to pay a cell phone bill, for example.

When you consider the extreme differences in these important variables, you understand why, as Dr. Dimitri Panagopoulos and others testified this year before Parliament, the scientific literature would indeed and in fact does show irrefutably and with overwhelming evidence the very serious and often permanent harmfulness of pulse-modulated cm-microwave radiation in interaction with the human body.

This well established fact cannot be refuted by the endless industry and industry-driven position statements that continue to use bullying power to overwhelm public opinion.

Anyone can look at the primary scientific papers and witness both their conclusions and their power density numbers. I made those papers available to you and all those who attended my lectures. Sadly, without the slightest review of that science, you made a false conclusion - publicly! - with no knowledge whatsoever, rather than avail yourself of the primary documents.

Nor, to my knowledge, has any other school trustee in Canada so much as inquired of the primary science. I thank you, at least, for attending my lectures, where I provided a basis for understanding this science and the quantitative data on the studies.

All school administrators and teachers, as well as parents working on the matter of school wifi, ought review these studies' conclusions publicly, one by one, with the numbers at which researchers concluded harm at power densities lower than Safety Code 6.

Let us be objective and caring toward both the rigorous RFR bioeffects science performed by many since the late 1920s - and toward our children. Otherwise the cloud of industry smoke-and-mirrors will continue to confuse policy, as you point out. Let us all set a good example for our children and not shrink from learning science. Since you are a physicist, I know you'll agree with me on this!

With gratitude for your initial efforts,

Susan Clarke

The dangers and risks to children and staff from Wi-Fi in schools

Last night, Citizens for Safe Technology (CST) presented to the Surrey School District (SSD) here in British Columbia on the dangers and risks to children and staff from Wi-Fi in schools.

I am pleased to say that we were very well received and that the trustees were very appreciative of the information we shared with them. CST member Liz Walker (who spoke last night) has been speaking out to and educating the SSD about EMR since she was involved in a successful bid to cancel a cell tower contract on top of her son's school in 2004.

Una St. Clair put together a binder the size of a small phone book full of studies and information. Una is both brilliant and a saint - like all of us she puts in hundreds of hours, fueled by her passion to make a difference on the planet and keep our children safe.

The questions that some of the trustees asked indicated that they were truly concerned by the info we shared. We did our absolute best to build a bridge with them and we offered our expertise and a collaborative approach to dealing with the issue, even if that initially means that there are Wi-Fi free classrooms in part of the school or that a few schools are selected initially to be Wi-Fi free. There was a commitment to get back to me. We shot some video - if it is available, I will post it. Una suggested that if a few schools went Wi-Fi, there should be a study on the impact of Wi-Fi on grade averages.

CST member Lynda Honing, who also spoke last night has done a great job of educating the principal at her daughter's school in the district- the principal followed the happenings in Barrie all summer and put together a hard wired computer lab at the beginning of the summer after school ended. At this point, the principal does not want any publicity about this, which I completely understand - I think it could jeopardize the changes she has quietly made and possibly her position

One point I made last night was that I was clear that the SSD did not knowingly roll out Wi-Fi with awareness of the risks, and pointed out to them that I used Wi-Fi extensively for five years until I was diagnosed with EHS. There was no finger pointing!

I also told the SSD about my brain tumor during the question period after our presentation. In Jan. 2008 I had an MRI to check my pituitary gland due to hormone imbalances. My pituitary was fine, but a smallish glioma (1.5 x 2.5 cm)  showed up close to my skull on the top left side of my head. I've had followup MRI's - the growth has been slow and my neurosurgeon has said that by all appearances, the glioma is benign and very slow growing. That said, after we noticed some small growth last May (3mm in 2.5 years) I decided to have surgery - I am looking at November. I consider myself blessed - had I not become EHS, I would have never found out about my tumor.

My neurosurgeon has said that he believes that recovery will be complete - that in his experience the surgery is very well tolerated and I should be back to normal in a few weeks.

I will follow up on what future communications we have with the district - I don't know what that is going to look like.

I can tell you that with the relationship we have forged with the BC Teachers Federation, invites to speak at to other school districts I can honestly say that we are gaining ground people are slowly waking up! I had a disastrous experience with the French School Board here in BC in 2008/2009 and learned a lot from that experience.

Texts, phones kill 16,000: study

Maggie Fox  Washington— Reuters
Published Friday, Sep. 24, 2010

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/technology/texts-phones-kill-16000-study/article1722964/

Drivers distracted by talking or texting on cell phones killed an estimated 16,000 people from 2001 to 2007, U.S. researchers reported on Thursday.

The estimate, one of the first scientific attempts to quantify how many people have died in accidents caused specifically by mobile telephone distractions, also suggests a growing number of these drivers are under 30.

"Our results suggested that recent and rapid increases in texting volumes have resulted in thousands of additional road fatalities in the United States," Fernando Wilson and Jim Stimpson of the University of North Texas Health Science Center wrote in the American Journal of Public Health.

Wilson and Stimpson used details on road deaths from each state, on cell phone ownership and data on text message volume from the Federal Communications Commission.

They got reports from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on deaths attributable to distracted driving.

"Since roughly 2001-2002, texting volumes have increased by several hundred per cent," Wilson said in a telephone interview. In 2002, 1 million texts were sent every month; this rose to 110 million in 2008.

"Since 2001 our model predicts that about 16,000 people have died since then that we attribute to the increase in texting volume in the United States."

Just talking on a cell phone can distract a driver, and several studies have demonstrated that, even with a hands-free device. But Wilson said texting and using so-called smart phones that provide e-mail access and other distracting applications take the problem to a new level.

U.S. traffic deaths are down – in 2009 the Transportation Department said they hit their lowest level since the mid-1950s in 2009 at 33,963.

But for every 1 million new cell phone subscribers, Wilson and Stimpson estimate a 19-per cent rise in deaths due to distracted driving.

"Distracted deaths as a share of all road fatalities increased from 10.9 per cent to 15.8 per cent from 1999 to 2008, and much of the increase occurred after 2005," they wrote.

"In 2008, approximately 1 in 6 fatal vehicle collisions resulted from a driver being distracted while driving," the report said. It found 5,870 people died in accidents attributed to distracted driving.

Cellphone ownership and the number of text messages sent rose sharply over the same time, Wilson and Stimpson found.

Wilson said 30 states ban texting while driving, and some cities and states require hands-free devices for drivers using mobile telephones

Radiation-emitting transmitters & Insurance

Dear HESA Committee Members,

Please  find below an article from a major American business magazine by the managing director of New York-based Vogel Capital Management warning that radiation from radiation-emitting transmitters may result in insurance claims similar to those from asbestos.

http://www.businessinsurance.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=%2F20100912%2FISSUE0401%2F309129980

She advises, "The insurance industry seems oblivious to this emerging risk, as it long ago added exclusionary clauses, installed aggregate limits, or carved out RF radiation risk, but only from telecom coverage. Insurers have never considered RF radiation as it relates to the properties that host RF-transmitting antennas. The real risk to insurers lies in those third-party workers" (residents)  "who are being overexposed to RF radiation at such properties."

It is telling that it seems to be taken for granted that users of cellphones will have high claims, but new to the argument are those people living and working near antennae. She is warning that the insurance companies must insulate themselves against these inevitable future claims as well.

I would ask that you consider this warning, and help prevent these future claims from occurring by requiring Safety Code 6 be discarded and new biologically-based regulations be implemented.

Yours truly,

Sharon Noble

Eleanor Mondale says brain tumor has stopped growing

http://www.kare11.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=872984&catid=14

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Radio talk show host Eleanor Mondale says her chemotherapy regimen has stopped the growth of her cancerous brain tumor.

Mondale recently had a brain scan at the Mayo Clinic. The daughter of former Vice President Walter Mondale was first diagnosed with cancer in 2005 and has had two major surgeries and various drug treatments. The 50-year-old Mondale says she'll return to Mayo for another brain scan next month.

The WCCO radio host tells the St. Paul Pioneer Press that the drugs she's taking to fight the cancer make her very tired and that the chemo has been hard on her body.

Mondale says she's looking forward to a February vacation in Mexico with her husband, musician Chan Poling, and her parents.

War of words erupts over Wi-Fi impact on health

Some parents alarmed about effect on their kids

Published September 23, 2010

http://www.lavalnews.ca/articles/tln1818/Wi-Fi-impact-on-health-181808.html

By Martin C. Barry • NEWSFIRST

Seemingly taking his cue from a British scientist who claims that wireless networks in schools could cause genetic defects, a St. Catharines, Ont. university dramatic arts department head has issued a warning of his own, while denouncing government denials of the problem as "false and misleading statements."

Health Canada: safe

The British scientist, Barrie Trower, who specialized in the development of microwave as a mass weapon during the Cold War, spoke at the University of Toronto on Aug. 25 about his safety concerns over the use of Wi-Fi systems in a public school setting. Prof. David Fancy of Brock U in St. Catharines was among those at Trower's lecture. Since then, Health Canada has responded to Trower's statements, maintaining that the technology is safe.

Trower says that the radio wave frequencies he was experimenting with as weapons are the same as are being used today for transmitting wireless Internet through schools, or anywhere for that matter where a wireless hub has been set up. He is especially concerned that small children are more susceptible to genetic damage, which could lead to deformed offspring when those children grow up.

Kooky claims?

The spreading controversy has made a local impact and prompted Montreal computer pioneer Lorne Trottier, founder of Matrox Graphics Inc., to fire off a "dismayed" letter to this city's leading English-language daily, wondering why Trower's "assertions of a kook" were being uncritically repeated in the media.

On a web page Trottier set up with some colleagues on issues concerning Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) and health, he maintains, "there is no credible scientific evidence that Wi-Fi or any other source of EMF can cause EHS" (Electrohypersensitivity), whose symptoms are similar to those reported by a group of parents in Barrie, Ont.

Children's health

Fancy's assertions on the perils of Wi-Fi, contained in a statement he distributed across the country on Aug. 30 via the Canada News Wire service, came on the heels of demands made by parents with children at a Barrie school about two weeks before, that the wireless Internet service be switched off because they are concerned it is making their children sick.

The parents say their children are exhibiting a multitude of symptoms, including headaches, dizziness, nausea and accelerated heart rates. Since the symptoms go away on weekends when the children aren't in school, the parents suspect the wireless system is to blame.

The parents have said they are willing to pay for installing a wired Internet distribution system throughout the school if that would mean shutting off the wireless system for good.

Questions the government

"There have been press reports in the last two weeks with false and misleading statements from government officials that there is no public health risk," Fancy, who sat on a staff and administration committee at Brock U that issued a warning on Wi-Fi to the university's 2,000 employees, said in his statement.

In a phone interview with the Laval News earlier this week, he said the reason he was speaking out about the issue was to respond to statements from Ontario's chief medical officer, Dr. Arlene King, that there are no health threats from wireless. "I think that her assertions are patently false and quite misleading," said Fancy, citing reams of research he has read about the effects of a range of radio frequencies from microwaves to X-rays.

The disturbing truth about cellphones
Martin Mittelstaedt
From Saturday's Globe and Mail
Published Friday, Sep. 24, 2010

Is that cellphone at your ear giving you cancer? U.S. public-health advocate and epidemiologist Devra Davis takes a close look at the science of cellphones in her new book, Disconnect, and discovers that while researchers haven't yet found a definitive answer, there are chilling clues that these ubiquitous devices are far from benign.

More related to this story

Tumours on the rise

Several studies, including an exhaustive review released this year by the World Health Organization's cancer-research agency, find that people who have used cellphones for half an hour a day for more than a decade have about twice the risk of glioma, a rare kind of brain tumour, on the side of their head where they hold the phone. Glioma is usually fatal. Dr. Davis says brain cancers typically take decades to develop, and the fact that they're being found after 10 years in cellphone users after relatively light exposure by today's usage standards is worrisome. "For such a risk to show up in cellphone users within 10 years given what we know about brain tumours, which is that they can have a latency of 40 years, is deeply, deeply disturbing," she said in an interview.

Your brain on microwaves

Cellphones operate on microwaves, sent and received by antennas on the back of the devices. Some people compare holding these phones to pressing tiny microwave ovens next to our heads. Nearly everyone is exposed to cellphone radiation: There are an estimated five billion subscriptions worldwide.

There is no doubt that more powerful types of radiation – think X-rays – cause cancer. But microwaves, known as non-ionizing radiation, were long thought to be benign because they weren't strong enough to bump electrons from atoms. Nonetheless, Dr. Davis writes that experiments indicate these waves do pack a biological punch. Rats exposed to just two hours of microwave radiation had broken strands of DNA, the damage known to occur in cancer. The rats also had brain-cell alterations, memory lapses and fluids leaking from their brains into their blood, indicating a breach of the blood-brain barrier.

Safe for whom?

Dr. Davis writes that cellphone-safety tests are based on the amount of radiation absorbed into the head of man who is in the top 10 per cent of U.S. military recruits, a 200-pounder with an 11-pound brain standing at 6 feet, 2 inches. The standards were based on early analog phones used no more than six minutes at a time, not the digital models now in use. They were set to prevent the head from overheating. The tests don't account for the smaller head sizes of women and children.

Don't touch that phone

According to the fine print of the safety and product information brochure accompanying every cellphone, pressing the phone to your ear is a no-no, Dr. Davis writes. BlackBerry instructions, for example, couldn't be more explicit. The phones should be used in a hands-free operation if available and people should "keep the BlackBerry device at least 0.98 in. (25 mm) from your body (including the abdomen of pregnant women and the lower abdomen of teenagers) when the BlackBerry device is turned on and connected to the wireless network."

Safer cellphone use

* Using headsets and wireless gadgets such as Bluetooth cuts the amount of radiation to the brain.

* Store your cellphone in a backpack or purse. Or, if you must carry it mounted on your belt, turn the keypad to face your body because the antenna is on the back. Because radiation drops exponentially by distance from the antenna, holding devices away from the body cuts doses dramatically.

* Don't sleep with your cellphone on next to the bed or under a pillow.

* Pregnant women should keep the phones away from their abdomen.

* Talk in an area with good reception. Poor reception increases the radiation dose because the phones must power up to send the signal.

* Children should text instead of speaking on the phone, and limit use to emergency situations.

Tobacco, asbestos and cellphones

"Science on this complicated topic remains uncertain, for two reasons. First of all, science is truly complex and not easily understood by most of us. But a very large part of that uncertainty on this issue has been manufactured by those with deep pockets whose bottom line remains their primary focus. Many of those engaged in efforts to study cellphone radiation have … made up their minds in advance. The fact that ready money has been there to support those who cast doubt on the dangers of radio-frequency radiation certainly plays some role in the perpetuation of their views, as it did with tobacco, asbestos, benzene, and hormone-replacement therapy." – from Disconnect

Out with the old science

"Cellphones have become as essential to modern life as cars and trucks and jet planes. We spend billions of dollars, euros, yen and won making vehicles safer for us to drive or fly in and checking to see if they are safe as used. We need to do the same things with cellphones. Rather than parroting assurances of safety based on old science, outmoded theories of physics, and bullied scientists, we need to invest in cellphones' safety as we do with other modern technologies.

"Of course, more research is needed. On that we are all agreed. But the need for research should not be allowed to become an excuse to carry on as though everything is fine, until we have incontrovertible proof that it is not." – from Disconnect

Early Onset Alzheimer's

Over the last few years I have noticed the high percentage of radio and television 'personalities' who have developed cancer and other serious illness.  There is good reason to believe that being exposed to strong amounts of electro magnetic radiation in their workplaces may be responsible.  The story linked below may be another indicator of the link between EMR and serious illness, this time Alzheimer's.  Martin

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wrote this in response to Anne-Marie Lenko's letter which referred to Safety Code 6 and the WHO. Ms. Lenko appears to be a colleague of Michelle Herlihy, one of the proponents of the Wi-Fi implementation:

I have no idea if my letter will be published given the content and the fact that the Peace Arch News is a sponsor of the "Wi-Fi on the Beach".

Link to Lenko's letter here:

http://www.bclocalnews.com/surrey_area/peacearchnews/opinion/letters/99635049.html

My letter:

Marie-Anne Lenko is fundamentally correct in her assertion that Wi-Fi concerns should be directed at those who regulate electromagnetic emissions. The unfortunate truth is that Health Canada is wilfully ignoring the sea of red flags around this issue. The Safety Code 6 Ms. Lenko refers to allows for a one degree increase in the temperature of our flesh over a six minute period. It does not deal with the constant 7x24 non-thermal (non-heating) exposures from cell phones, cordless phones, wi-fi and cell towers that we deal with in the real world.

Regarding the World Health Organization's (WHO) stance on exposure to wireless radiation from cell phones, wi-fi, etc: Whistleblower Barry Trower, a retired British military scientist in microwave and stealth warfare has reviewed the WHO's database of studies on health effects from electromagnetic radiation and is "bemused" by the fact that 80 percent of the WHO's studies show deleterious health effects. Yet for reasons we don't understand, the WHO continues to give the thumbs up to Wi-Fi, cell towers and cell phones.

I am 12 year senior I.T. Support Tech who has installed hundreds of Wi-Fi networks. After personally experiencing health effects from wireless microwave radiation and also looking at the reams of scientific literature on this issue I can say beyond the shadow of a doubt that we have a monumental health issue on our hands that is only going to get worse as time goes on if nothing is done to reduce our exposure. Our bodies have simply not been able to adapt to the enormous increase in man-made wireless radiation over the last 25 years.

From a technical and biological standpoint, thousands of peer reviewed, published studies have documented health effects at levels far below those of conventional Wi-Fi networks, cell towers and cell phones. As a network tech, I can tell you that even when Wi-Fi networks are in standby mode and are not transmitting any email or web browsing data, the beacon that advertises the name of the network that allows computers and other devices to connect to the network, transmits at full power - this is why almost all who are Electrohypersensitive (EHS) feel ill even when in the presence of a Wi-Fi network that is in standby mode.

Not a week goes by that I don't meet or am approached by at least one person whose health has gone South because of exposure to wireless technologies, which include cordless home phones, cell phones and Wi-Fi. Poor and broken sleep, ringing in the ears, headaches, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, rashes, many cases of heart arrhythmias - this cluster of symptoms have the majority of our health professionals dumbfounded. Those who are EHS are the proverbial "canaries in the coal mine" and as time goes on more and more people will become sensitive. This is not simply a case of a few sensitive people – we are looking at up to 35 percent of the population that is already sensitive, based on the number of people experiencing the "cluster" of symptoms associated with this condition. Most of them have not connected the dots and realized what is causing their symptoms, and when they are away from the various sources of radiation, they quickly recover and feel better.

Since we cannot rely on Health Canada and the World Health Organization to advise us, it is up to municipalities and especially schools to "do the right thing" and exercise the precautionary principle by removing wi-fi and other wireless technologies, even if it appears to be a temporary "step backwards". I doubt that local business and our education system will grind to a halt.

Finally, the beach has historically been the place to "unplug" and enjoy the sun and surf. Given how much we all use computers and cell phones on a daily basis, wouldn't it be nice to get away from them, at least for a while?

Title: Getting Away From It All....WiFi In Parks

Post by: WoodNCanvas on July 21, 2010, 11:22 AM

Originally posted on my blog,

http://reflectionsoutdoors.wordpress.com/2010/07/21/wifi-in-provincial-parks-getting-away-from-it-all/ ,

but thought worth repeating here:

This morning  CBC Radio News reported that WiFi is available at the Pinery Provincial Park here in Ontario. The Pinery Provincial Park is located near Grand Bend, Ontario, on Lake Huron. It is described on the park website,

http://www.pinerypark.on.ca/about.html

as follows:

Pinery's natural features are staggering – 2,532 ha (6,330 acres) in size; over 757 plant, 325 bird and 60 butterfly species to name just a few groups; a globally rare Oak Savanna ecosystem; freshwater coastal dunes; habitat for endangered species; and the largest protected forest in southwestern Ontario.

The recreational opportunities in Pinery are equally diverse – 10 km beach; 10 nature trails; 38 km of ski trails; canoeing, kayaking and hydrobiking; fishing; cycling; and one of the largest year-round interpretive programs in Ontario.

The facilities within Pinery are also impressive – wheelchair accessible general store and restaurant; laundromats; firewood; picnic shelter; rental shops for canoes, kayaks, hydrobikes, bicycles and cross-country skis; Savanna Shores nature gift shop; and year-round Visitor Centre featuring nature exhibits.

The many amenities within the park offer flexibility and convenience – 3 campgrounds; with a total of 1,000 campsites including 400 electrical sites and many pull-through sites; 10 youth group sites; trailer sanitation station; flush toilets and showers; and 12 yurts with heated tent, bunk-beds, electricity, BBQ and picnic shelter provided! There is so much to do at Pinery that you will have no trouble finding activities to occupy your time, whether your stay is for one day, one week or even a month!

So Pinery is hardly a wilderness park….in fact it is fairly close to such urban centres as Sarnia, Windsor, and London….and its sand beach is famous….but WiFi in a provincial park? That doesn't make much sense….I admit that I love to spend time on the Net as much as anyone….but really….when somebody is away on holidays and camping out….trying to experience the great outdoors…do we really need to be able to get on our computers that bad? The CBC report said that this is only the first of several provincial parks that will have WiFi access….now granted WiFi is only available near the Visitor's Centre apparently at Pinery….but as the province gets more "coverage" for things such as cell phone and satellite TV….and these devices become more technically advanced….one can only imagine the day when you might find the following scenario:

Somewhere in the "wilds" of Algonquin Park….on a backcountry canoe route…two figures are crouched around the glowing campfire….no make that the glowing portable TV….busy on their portable laptops. John the stockbroker is busy trying to catch up on the latest market trends….Bill the teacher is sending in his daily trip report to one of the Internet canoeing based forums he frequents. Half way through his data entry, Bill's cell phone rings, with a ringtone from Dan Gibson's Solitudes. Soon Bill is in full conversation ordering a delivery pizza for the next night's meal….with delivery guaranteed in a day or the pizza is free.

Bill: "That's right….we'll be on North Tea Lake….on the first island….yeah the one with the great beach. The deluxe with double cheese. But no anchovies. Tomorrow night at six sharp. See you then."

John: "Was that Algonquin Outfitters?….are they delivering the pizza?"

Bill: "Yeah. But they said it might be an hour late….depends on how busy that last portage is. Are you having trouble getting a signal for your computer?….I keep losing the dlink signal….might have to try my external antenna….really don't feel like climbing a tree."

John: "No I'm fine….almost as fast as at home….nothing like keeping a check on those stocks. And I thought these huge old pines might block out my signal. Or the rocks would. But they've done a great job setting up this WiFi throughout the park."

Bill: "Yeah…good to stay connected. I think they plan on wiring up every other tree by next year."

John: "Just wonderful. And it's great to get away from it all, isn't it?"

Perhaps a bit far fetched….but then one of the problems many camps have today is trying to get kids to disconnect….to not use cell phones or the computer….some camps ban such devices….or limit the times allowed for use….some report the kids bringing more than one cell phone (in case the first gets confiscated)….or even kids texting from one cabin to another.

So I find this report of WiFi in a provincial park somewhat incredulous….maybe it would be better if we "reconnected" with the outdoors instead. Mother Nature has her own signals….her own messages….far better than any on the Net….or on Twitter. All we have to do is to take the time to listen.

Paddles up until later then….and here's hoping you get away from it all….even just for a while.

The Effects Of Radiation In The Cause Of Cancer

July 15th, 2010

http://www.cochinpages.com/general/the-effects-of-radiation-in-the-cause-of-cancer/

Cancer is, unfortunately, spreading in the modern society. Nearly all cancer forms are increasing when it comes to incidence, i.e. new cases/year (cf. Hallberg & Johansson 2002a).

It could recently be read in the BBC News that skin cancer is rising in young adults, and Sara Hiom, head of the health information at Cancer Research UK said, when interviewed, that "Non-melanoma cancers are rising at an alarming rate".

Non-melanoma cancers are rising at an alarming rate

More and more research efforts goes into understanding the molecular mechanisms behind these various progressive cancer forms, and much more money is spent on finding new drugs to treat patients. However, oddly enough, very little is spent on understanding the actual causes for cancer.

Among such possible causative agents, more and more focus is nowadays put on modern gadgets, such as mobile telephones and computers, and their chemical and physical emissions, including flame retardants and electromagnetic non-ionising radiation.

Childhood leukemia was early connected to power-frequent magnetic fields already in the pioneering work by Wertheimer and Leeper (1979), and more recently Scandinavian scientists have identified an increased risk for acoustic neuroma (i.e., a benign tumor of the eighth cranial nerve) in cell phone users, as well as a slightly increased risk of malignant brain tumors such as astrocytoma and meningioma on the same side of the brain as the cell phone was habitually held (Hardell et al. 1999, 2004, 2005; Lonn et al. 2004).

In addition, a clear association between adult cancers and FM radio broadcasting radiation has been noticed, both in time and location (Hallberg & Johansson 2002b, 2004, 2005a). Initial studies on facial nevi indicates that nowadays also young children can have a substantial amount of these.

If it can be shown that radiofrequent radiation is not correlated with child cancers the current focus on low-frequency electromagnetic fields can continue. If there is also a radiofrequent and/or microwave correlation then this must be considered in future research as well as in today's preventive work.

Most recently, Dr. Djemal Beniashvili and other scientists at the Edith Wolfson Medical Center in Holon, Israel, have demonstrated a possible link between exposure to power-frequent electromagnetic fields and breast cancer in elderly women (Beniashvili et al. 2005).

They compared the breast cancer rates in elderly women from an earlier period (1978-1990) to a more recent period (1991-2003), which has been characterized by a much more extensive use of personal computers (more than 3 hours a day), mobile telephones, TV sets, and other household electrical appliances. They used available medical records extending over a period of 26 years, involving the analysis of more than 200,000 samples.

Most recently a possible link has been demonstrated between exposure to power-frequent electromagnetic fields and breast cancer in elderly women

Among the elderly women who developed breast cancer in the first time frame, 20 percent were regularly exposed to power-frequent fields.

But in the more modern period 51 percent were so exposed, mainly through the use of personal computers. The authors concluded: "There was a statistically significant influence of electromagnetic fields on the formation of all observed epithelial mammary tumours in the second group."

This represented a more than two-fold increase, which was considered highly significant (cf. Beniashvili et al. 2005).

Of course, many other environmental factors have changed during the period 1978-1990, but increased environmental exposure to power-frequent fields is among the more conspicuous changes to have taken place. Naturally, there are many aspects of this question that remain to be clarified, and, from a scientific point of view, it is far from conclusively settled.

Is Your Office Making You Sick?

July 14th, 2010

How to heal sick building syndrome.

Sick building syndrome (SBS) and the growing prevalence of WiFi and mobile phones are creating long-term health risks that are much more difficult to define—let alone diagnose. With symptoms ranging from dry cough and eye, nose, skin or throat irritation to dizziness, fatigue, headaches, and nausea caused by biological contaminants (like bacteria and molds), toxins from asbestos, carbon monoxide, cleaning agents, and radiation in the workplace, researchers conclude "more focus is needed on the indoor environment" to prevent SBS.

A study at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California, for example, shows that cutting ventilation rates even a little can raise the incidence of sick building syndrome among workers by 23%. And exposure to electromagnetic pollution, increasingly prevalent today, only compounds these risks.

New research in the International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health reports increased cancer and neurological risks from cell towers, which seem to be popping up everywhere—often disguised in church steeples and bell towers. Reviewing 10 epidemiological studies, a Swedish investigation notes that 8 show increased risks within 500 meters (about 1/3 of mile) of mobile phone base stations.

As none of these studies reports exposure above accepted international guidelines for electromagnetic fields (EMFs), the researchers admit "current guidelines may be inadequate in protecting the health of human populations." Furthermore, this research addresses only one form of radiation surrounding us all 24/7.

Some studies show that American electrical workers with the most electric and magnetic exposure are twice as likely to die of prostate cancer as those with lower exposure. University of Washington research finds that communications and electrical workers have higher rates of breast cancer—even though this study only looked at men—who don't actually  have breasts!

Data from over 130,000 electrical workers shows an increased risk of suicide, while other studies link EMF radiation to depression and other mental health problems. In an earlier review of occupational exposure to EMFs, 9 out of 10 studies link electromagnetic radiation to ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease.

Dr. Ann Louise's Take:

It's beginning to look like many of us may be suffering from a kind of severe allergy to electricity and electronics.

At this point you may well be asking what you can do. I'm certainly not suggesting that you quit your job. What I am suggesting is that it's time to consider the electropollution on your own personal "radar screen."

I've learned a thing or two about this kind of pollution. And the answer can be as simple as moving your desk a few feet away from hazardous sources.

For starters, take a look around your workspace, identifying areas that could possibly emit EMFs. Culprits can include electrical boxes, cables, electrical utility closets, transformers outside the building, and cell or radio frequency towers nearby.

Elevators may also be cause for concern. One study, for example, linked a hydraulic elevator, which regularly produces power surges with corresponding magnetic fields far above safe limits, to increased risk for breast cancer among women working in this building.

What You Don't Know Can Hurt You

Check out some of the electromagnetic safety equipment I've personally found helpful in my EMF Product Guide. For example, you might want to measure EMFs in your workplace with a GaussMeter, paying special attention to readings in areas where you spend most of your day.

If readings are high—above 1 milligauss (mG) according to The Bioinitiative Report—move your desk and chair away from a wall where wiring is located or if EMF-generating machines (like copy machines or wireless routers) are on the other side. Keep your distance, as well, from surge protectors, extension cords, power bars, and electrical wires.

Whenever you need to make copies, stand away from the machine, particularly the motor, which can produce EMFs. Fax machines, printers, and scanners all give off EMFs, and some laser printers emit ozone, which irritates the lining of the lungs.

Is your computer hard drive located under your desk? If so, move it as far away from your body as possible to distance yourself from EMFs and turn off any electronic equipment when you're not using it. To learn more ways to remediate the all-too numerous health hazards that invade today's buildings, go to www.buildingbiology.net, and then share your findings with your office manager or supervisor.

Judge won't bar use of electronics

http://www.santafenewmexican.com/Local%20News/Local-news-in-brief-July-13--2010#disqus_thread

A judge has reaffirmed her decision not to issue a preliminary injunction to bar Arthur Firstenberg's neighbor from using electronic devices in her home, but the judge again declined to dismiss Firstenberg's lawsuit.

Firstenberg claims that because he is extraordinarily sensitive to electromagnetic signals, his health is damaged by Raphaela Monribot's use of an iPhone, a Wi-Fi system and other electronic devices.

His complaint against Monribot and the owner of her west-side house, Robin Leith, made national headlines earlier this year.

In orders issued Thursday, state District Judge Sarah Singleton said no hearing is necessary on Firstenberg's motion for an injunction. An affidavit from Olle Johansson, head of Experimental Dermatology Unit at the Korolinska Institute of Stockholm, Sweden, regarding Firstenberg's "electrohypersensititivty," does not change the judge's previous ruling, Singleton wrote.

But Singleton also turned down Monribot's motion to dismiss the complaint, so the case will progress toward a trial. No dates have been set.

Vatican masts blamed for causing cancer in children

By Michael Day in Milan

Thursday, 15 July 2010

http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/vatican-masts-blamed-for-causing-cancer-in-children-2026765.html

Radio masts operated by the Vatican's radio station are causing cancer in children, a medical expert has told a Rome court – resulting in six officials of the station being investigated for manslaughter.

The claims of Professor Andrea Micheli, from Milan's National Tumor Institute, focus on 19 child deaths from leukaemia or lymphoma between 1980 and 2003 in the Cesano area, north of Rome; Vatican Radio operates masts nearby in Santa Maria di Galeria.

Micheli, a professor of cancer epidemiology, says in his 300-page report: "The study suggests there was an important, coherent and significant link between residential exposure to the Vatican Radio structures and an excess risk of death from leukaemia and lymphoma in the children."

He said the raised cancer risk occurred in children under 14 who lived less than 7.5 miles from the masts. He also found evidence of a link between the radiation and adult cancers – but only among those who lived much closer to the antennae.

His investigation was ordered by the court five years ago after concerns were raised about an increased incidence of cancer in the area. As a result of Prof Micheli's evidence, six officials of Vatican Radio have been placed under investigation for manslaughter, by investigating magistrate Stefano Pesci.

The Vatican was quick to point out yesterday that the Italian Navy also operated radio masts in the area.

La Repubblica reported, however, that the leaked court report singled out the Vatican Radio masts as the likely cause, quoting it as saying: "It is due to exposure to the antennae of Vatican Radio and not that of the navy."

Father Federico Lombardi, the director general of Vatican Radio, said it had followed all regulations in setting up the masts.

He also expressed concern that the report was leaked ahead of its official publication,

Vatican Radio, which was set up in 1931, broadcasts to 61 countries in 47 languages.

Parents question Wi-Fi

Posted By NATHAN TAYLOR, The Packet & Times
http://www.orilliapacket.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=2662396

"I don't know what to do, and I'm scared."

Betty Churchley isn't the only one looking for answers to the list of unknowns surrounding her 12-year-old son's symptoms, which she believes could be a product of electromagnetic radiation coming from the wireless Internet (Wi-Fi) in her son's school, Mountain View Elementary School in Collingwood.

Fighting back tears, Churchley spoke about her son, who uses a heart monitor because of an erratic heartbeat that she said began when Wi-Fi was installed at the school.

The Collingwood mother was among the 80 or so people who attended an information session last week at Collingwood's Leisure Time Centre. The meeting was organized by the recently formed Simcoe Safe School Committee.

The committee, made up of mental health counsellors, chiropractors and others in the community, paid to bring Magda Havas, associate professor at Trent University, to make a presentation. Havas has conducted electromagnetic research for 20 years, and she believes Wi-Fi should not be in schools.

"If this was happening to my child," Havas told Churchley, "I'd take them out of Mountain View school."

Angel Bavelaar, of Wasaga Beach, came to the meeting with her eight-year-old son, Dalton, who has been diagnosed with superventricular tachycardia, the symptoms of which includes a racing heart.

Bavelaar had to pause to regain her composure while describing her son's conditions.

"He has every single symptom you can think of. It breaks my heart," she said. "He was a normal kid, then it was almost like he had ADHD, stopped sleeping, cried all the time. He just wasn't himself."

"I feel like I'm going to fall and it feels like I'm not really in my body and I can't move," Dalton explained.

Bavelaar said Dalton has collapsed five times at his school, Birchview Dunes Elementary School.

"It's always at school where he seems worse," she said. "Even if it turns out that he's just got a normal heart condition, the Wi-Fi isn't helping anything."

Christine MacLean is undecided. She attended the meeting as part of her est to find out what's causing symptoms -- such as nausea and trouble sleeping -- experienced by her kids, who attend Mountain View. She wants to know the differences between symptoms related to anxiety and those caused by electromagnetic fields.

She explained how her children's symptoms subsided when they were away from Wi-Fi, "only to re-experience them when we spent a weekend in a Toronto hotel" that had wireless Internet.

The Simcoe County District School Board implemented Wi-Fi in all of its schools as part of its information and communication technology (ICT) strategic plan. The board has been faced with criticism recently by some parents of Mountain View students.

But the board's policy conforms to Health Canada's guidelines.

"We count on our government regulators to help us out," said board superintendent John Dance. "We've taken a look at it... and we have to say there's nothing there that says (Wi-Fi) is unsafe."

The board has been accused of knowingly putting kids' health at risk by not exercising the precautionary principle, which calls for all risks to be eliminated in the absence of conclusive evidence they cause harm.

"You're not going to cross the road because you might get hit by a car? That's simplistic, I know, but the precautionary principle is not based on science," Dance said, adding, "there hasn't been any medical evidence from medical doctors" saying its usage in schools is harmful to children.

At an earlier meeting, the board brought in physicist Tony Muc, who agreed the technology was safe. The parents argue that Muc did not focus on the biological effects.

"I understand that," Dance said, "but when you bring in someone with hard science, you go with scientific answers."

Havas maintains Health Canada's Safety Code 6, which sets guidelines for radiofrequency exposure, "does not protect anyone against biological health effects."

"We've got to educate school officials that this technology is not safe. We're not saying don't use the Internet," she said, noting they are asking that the board recognize potential hazards and exercise the precautionary principle. "They're not doing that, and they're hiding behind Health Canada."

No representatives from the Simcoe County District School Board were at last week's meeting, as they were at their own finance meeting. But Paul Wehrle made it.

Wehrle is a trustee with the Bluewater District School Board, which also has Wi-Fi in all of its schools.

"I have three grandchildren in the system, and I'm very nervous," he said. "We're immersing children in an electromagnetic environment that we really don't know anything about."

Not knowing is the frustrating part, said Wehrle, who represents Meaford and the Blue Mountains.

"You have a lot of theories. You can't prove what you're saying," he said of Havas, noting the symptoms could be tied to other causes. "On the other hand, Safety Code 6 is not based on any stronger evidence than hers."

Wehrle noted he was not speaking on behalf of the school board.

Angela Klein is on the parent council at St. Vincent-Euphrasia Elementary School in Meaford. Her seven-year-old daughter attends the school.

Like so many others, Klein is on a hunt for answers. She believes Wi-Fi is causing health problems, but it hasn't been proven to her.

"But I also believe they can't prove to me it's not. And if we don't have an answer either way, it shouldn't be there," she said.

Initially, a group of Mountain View parents asked the Simcoe County board to turn off Wi-Fi access points at the school that it said were unnecessarily left on. One of the arguments was regarding the level of radiation being emitted. The board said the access points were to remain on so the Wi-Fi could be accessed in various parts of the school at various times.

"The board has already made its decision on this. Nothing that I've ever read has said a cellphone tower is less powerful than an access point," Dance said of arguments to the contrary. He also noted trustees recently reaffirmed their support for the strategic plan, including Wi-Fi usage.

The board's objective in introducing Wi-Fi in all schools, Dance said, was equity and accessibility.

"The reason why we went to wireless is because, through the ICT strategic plan... we found that we didn't have the availability to have computer labs for every student," he said.

With wireless, "the computers move as opposed to the students," Dance said.

Among the information distributed to those in attendance at last week's meeting were results from surveys conducted by the school board as part of its ICT plan.

Rodney Palmer, who represents the Simcoe Safe School Committee, and whose kids attend Mountain View, noted the answers to one question in particular stood out.

The board asked: "How would you like to see technology used in schools?" One option was "Wi-Fi in school/more Internet." Zero per cent of parents chose that option, while 11% of the board's central staff, 34% of school staff and 16% of students chose it.

Also, only 8% of central staff and 1% of school staff identified "lack of Wi-Fi in schools" as a concern. Zero per cent of central staff and 19% of school staff considered wireless connection a priority.

Havas commended those who showed up at the meeting for taking an interest in the matter, and she encouraged them to keep the heat on the board.

"If you organized yourselves, you could be a very powerful group, and I think that's what you need to do," she said.

Earlier this week, the Simcoe County District School Board posted to its website letters from both Education Minister Leona Dombrowsky and Nina Arron, director of public health protection and prevention with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, in which they state their support for the board's use of Wi-Fi.

Both refer to Safety Code 6, with Dombrowsky stating Health Canada and the World Health Organization "have the scientific, technical and public policy knowledge" to deem the technology safe.

PARENTS MOBILIZING

A group of concerned citizens, believing wireless Internet (Wi-Fi) is causing physical harm to school children, has taken various steps to inform the public on the matter.

"For the past few months, a group of parents have realized that approaching the board with delegations has not been working," Rodney Palmer said of the Simcoe County District School Board.

Palmer and other parents of Mountain View Elementary School students have made presentations to the board. They've been heard more than once; it's the results that have them upset, with the board having affirmed its support for Wi-Fi in its schools.

The Mountain View school council now has a Wi-Fi subcommittee, which was formed to further investigate the issue. Now, the Simcoe Safe School Committee has been formed.

"This is a plea to find out how widespread this novel collection of symptoms is," Palmer said. "We're asking the questions that are failing to be asked by the authorities."

The committee now has a website: www.safeschool.ca.

COMPLAINT FILED

A complaint has been filed against the Simcoe County District School Board's freedom of information and records management officer.

Rodney Palmer filed the complaint with the province's privacy commissioner on behalf of the Mountain View school council's Wi-Fi subcommittee, claiming Gina Coish "abused" the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA).

The group had asked the board when Wi-Fi was installed and activated at Mountain View.

Coish recommended it be treated as a formal Freedom of Information request under MFIPPA because of potential student privacy concerns.

"This is not a privacy issue. This is a simple technical issue," Palmer said.

Debbie Clarke, communications manager with the board, said, "We cannot comment about individual FOI requests. We have an excellent set of procedures for processing FOI requests and we fully abide by our duties under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act."

The possible effects of Electromagnetic Radiation and Radio Frequency Radiation

http://rnzn.bravehost.com/emrfr.html

As a former Radio Frequency Manager, I was aware of the possible dangers of RF and EMR emanating onboard our ships and wireless shore stations.

In 1965, I was serving on Royalist and during our work-up at Pearl Harbour, some of us visited the Submarine transmitter site (VLF) at Naval Communications Station, Honolulu. We were warned prior to getting off the bus, not to touch the sides of the door as we got out. As we approached the transmitter building, it was noticed that a lot of dead birds were in the area that encircled the building. (The 900ft vertical wire aerial fed directly from the transmitter). Inside the building, the transmitter (rated at 500,000 Watts) was encircled by a copper mesh shield. Sticking out of this mesh was a fluorescent tube – it wasn't connected but brilliantly lit. This suggested that the transmitter was radiating! We were there for about 45 minutes - was this the start of my health problems? About 7 to 8 years later, I was diagnosed as having a low sperm count and high blood pressure.

The Type 12 frigates (Otago, Taranaki and Blackpool) had red lines painted in a semi circle radiating from the base of the two main whip aerials – one port and the other on the starboard side of each waist. These red lines theoretically meant that one should not loiter within that half circle for more than two minutes at a time. This was the extent of our knowledge of Radiation Hazards regarding High Frequency. We also had RADHAZ Boards for Fuelling, Man Aloft and Ammunitioning. But, to what extent did we really know what was going on?

Tempest Radiation (EMR) – This came about as a result of the Government Communications Security Bureau working with our Allies – the US military had discovered that electromagnetic teleprinters emanated secure information in the clear, even though the wireless office onboard ships was surrounded by quarter inch steel. If it can get through that, then imagine what it can do to do the human body. As a matter of interest, many things in the home cause EMR – laptops and VDU screens are at the top of the list as being the worst. A cheap AM, transistor radio with a telescopic aerial will pick up EMR from electronic/electrical equipment. I purchased one from The Warehouse for $9 and use it at the hospital where I work as a Biomedical Engineer to check what is causing EMR interference to biomedical equipment - equipment that is connected to patients.

In 1975/76, I was the Chief RS on the Otago. Communications on the SE Asia station at that time were non-existent. There were no major communications facilities from Commonwealth radio stations that could cover the whole of our operational area that we had in the old days – Hong Kong, Singapore and Darwin. Hong Kong had a duplex, radioteletype, secure system available, but could only handle one ship at a time. I had requested that facility six months prior to sailing from NZ and was told that it was fully booked for a RN ship – fair enough.

NZ Defence Communications in Singapore could only handle a CW and a SSB Voice circuit – neither was conducive to strategic communications back to the command. Otago managed to maintain communications for about a month with Naval Communications Station Darwin using a duplex, secure, radioteletype circuit. It was prior to this that I remembered a problem that occurred on Taranaki during Longex 1970. The tuning base of the port aerial had developed a crack and every time the ship transmitted, a blue arc passed from the base tuner to the deck. The RN tanker refused to come alongside to pass fuel – not surprising. What was surprising, was the distance covered by the arc – it went well over the red circle and made contact with the guardrail, approximately 4 metres away(on top of this, the OOW was obviously not aware of the correct RADHAZ procedures for RAS fuelling!!). As a result of this, when we transmitted using the secure circuit between Otago and Darwin, I had a bigger, physical barrier put up using brooms, mops and rope to ensure that personnel did not come within close proximity of the base of the whip. This was supplemented by regular broadcasts over the Ship's main system to make personnel aware of the possible danger. In 2009 I carried out some research at home with my radio equipment and discovered that 2.5 watts radiating from a vertical wire, exceeded the near field effect recommended by the RNZN up until the 1990's of 1.24 metres for 1 kilowatt (BR222 - The Users Guide to Wireless Equipment Chapter 1.11 - Radio Hazards. This publication repeats in part from BR2924 Handbook for Radio Hazards - both were RN publications and were in use in the RNZN). My tests have picked up radiation from over 5 metres! The updated version of NZBR2924 HF Hazards in the RNZN states that for 1 kilowatt the safety radius should be 3.2 metres and for 500 watts should be 2.4 metres.

I was lucky enough to be sent on a Radio Frequency Manager's course to the USAF in 1984. It was on this course that I learnt about the dangers of Radio Frequency radiation and possible cancers.

Prior to this, I had been posted to HMNZS Canterbury in 1981/82. Once again, we ended up in a situation where we were without Communications HF support. We were under the operational control of MODUK(Navy) and our Satellite comms support frigate had to return to Gibraltar for repairs. We ended up using a duplex, radioteletype, HF circuit to the RAF base in Episkopi, Cyprus. This meant that we were transmitting 1 kW on the HF Broadband aerial system for 24 hours a day for about 8 weeks. In addition, the 965 radar (450,000 Watts) was also transmitting, enveloping the Flag Deck.

Showing possible RF coverage from the HF aerial and Radar

After I left the navy in 1988, I didn't think much more about it. It wasn't until the Canterbury visited Dunedin in 2000, that things started to fit into place. The Chief RS on there at the time, invited me down for a look around. When we got to the Boat Deck, I noticed that the ladder leading to the Flag Deck had a RADHAZ plate locked across it. On asking my friend what was that all about, he said that OSH had decreed that all Flag Decks were deemed a possible carcinogenic area. At that stage, I had had a melanoma removed from the right hand side of my stomach – yet, never been sunburnt in that area. I have since had cancer of the prostate – the cancer process can start early on without detection and most of them are not detected until decades later. That's why prostate cancer is known as the Old Man's cancer. It's got nothing to do with old age – it just takes years to surface! I visited HMAS Kanimbla when she visited Dunedin in 2008 and it was interesting to note that the Flag Deck on there was also A RADHAZ - Off Limits area. It would appear that the RAN/RNZN had done further research and had come up with either a different formula or used RF near field measuring equipment to determine that the original distance for the safe radiation line should be twice the distance of what it was - this is being looked into. (new 2010)

My research over the past 10 years has produced the following:

  1. I researched 8 radio operators who had served on Tui (ex USN). 6 out of 8 had cancer. Three have since passed away. The transmission lines out of the 1kW transmitter were open wire. Cancers ranged from the head area to the lower abdomen.
  2. A number of radio technicians who worked on the Gunnery Radar system on the Type 12 frigates have died from cancer. This was varying cancer from the chest area to the testicles.
  3. Ships that had transmitters in the Wireless Offices were possible causes of RF radiation and Electromagnetic radiation – RF radiation caused from open wire feeders, no SWR meters and soot and salt build up on the aerials causing reflected power back into the wireless office - typically the 89Q transmitters on the Bathurst Class and the Lachlan with their well known blue flashes emitting from the sides! EMR caused by radio equipment being switched on all the time, especially transmitters, 1kW amplifiers, radioteletype equipment, cryptographic equipment and receivers. RF radiation was probably present on the upper deck of most ships from W/T and Radar aerials, with the Leander Class being the most prominent.

The following ships may have contributed to health problems:

RF Radiation – Loch Class frigates, Endeavour (I) and (II), Bathurst Class minesweepers, Lachlan, Monowai, Tui (Ex-USN) and Leander Class frigates.

EM Radiation – All the above, all ships and shore stations where you have receivers, teleprinters, cryptographic equipment, etc. I also include Electrical switchboards and Operations Rooms on ships. The ANZAC frigate Ops Rooms are probably just as bad with their computers, VDU's, etc.

As a result of my research, I have come across the following sites to substantiate my findings:

1. Dr Neil Cherry – a former NZ researcher (passed away in 2003) who has world-wide acclaim. Here at

http://www.avaate.org/IMG/doc/CWTI.Cherry_literature_review_9.2000.doc

This takes a long time to download. If you would like a copy - email me.

This 63 page report states that there is a connection between EM and RF radiation and health problems.

At first glance, the report seems to be solely about Cell phones. However, the report covers from ELF through the whole radio frequency spectrum to EHF. The author has referred to cell phone operation as MW (microwave). Microwaves are at the upper end of the spectrum and cover from 300 MHz to 300 GHz. Where Dr Cherry has mentioned RF/MW, he is referring to the RF spectrum as being up to 300 MHz and MW as being from 300MHz to 300 GHz. See also 4. below.

2. The US Amateur Radio Relay League report here

http://www.arrl.org/news/rfsafety/hbkrf.html

This report discusses the possibility of health problems due to EM and RF radiation and how to avoid them.

3. Former POREL Ken Shankland alerted me to this site:

http://www.safetycenter.navy.mil:80/afloat/articles/surface/radhaz.htm

This website alludes mainly to RF burns, which we know definately happens. They appear reluctant to commit themselves further.

4. CSIRO Report into the effects of RF and EM radiation - and in  Chapter 11 http://electricwords.emfacts.com/csiro/chapter11.html and of interest to Communications ratings is the statement referring to radiation of frequencies below 30Mhz:

"up to 30 MHZ (sub-resonance range), radiation incident on the trunk (the body) is predominantly absorbed at the surface (enters the body through the skin), whereas that incident on the legs and neck may result in significant energy absorption. In this range, absorption increases rapidly with frequency."

All cancers, except for three, reported by Communicators have been in the trunk area - lungs, oesaphagus, kidney, prostate, bowel etc..

At the bottom of that page it refers to abstracts obtained from around the world - click on to that then click the top subject Epidemiology. Some of the research actually states that there are correlations between RF/EMR/EMF radiations and various illnesses, including some cancers. Ignore the research on cellphones - I found seven different abstracts which are of significance in my case and applicable to many other personnel. The abstracts are the results of work carried out by epidemiologists from around the world and in many cases are identical to the findings of Dr Neil Cherry.

I have personally experienced medical problems that are not considered normal for a person of my ilk. In addition to the two lots of cancer, I have had/still have heart disease resulting in a quadruple bypass, SVT (rapid heart beat), basal carcinoma skin cancer, asthma, obstructive airways disease, pre-diabetes, gum disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, gout, kidney stones, irritable bowel syndrome and reflux. All these problems may be attributable to EMR/RF. I was never a heavy smoker – used to have a couple during social occasions. I have managed to keep my weight down in accordance with my height and have been keeping an eye on my diet for years.

Since this was published, more ex-RNZN personnel and next of kin have volunteered their personal information (this is additional to those already mentioned on the previous page):

Radio Operator - lung cancer, cancer of the oesophagus, leukaemia, high blood pressure and heart disease. Low sperm count. Unable to have children (now deceased - New 2010).

Radio Operator - Heart disease and prostate cancer.

Signalman - diabetes, cancer of the prostate, bladder cancer and cancer of the liver (now deceased).

Signalman - diabetes and cancer of the kidney.

Radar Plotter - one son and five daughters. Reflux.

Radio Mechanic - peripheral vascular disease and erectile dysfunction. Two daughters.

Radio Mechanic - four daughters.

Radio Operator - Multiple myeloma (now deceased).

Australian Army Radio Operator - heart disease and peripheral vascular disease.

Radio Mechanic - cancer of the lung, pancreas and prostate. Heart disease. (Now deceased)

Radio Mechanic - esophageal cancer, basal carcinoma skin cancer and three daughters.

Signalman - Multiple myeloma.

Radio Operator - Gout, Kidney stones (twice), high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease and low sperm count. Unable to have children(new 2010).

Radio Operator - Multiple problems to be confirmed, low sperm count (new 2010).

NZ Army female Commcen Operator - breast cancer (deceased) (new 2010).

Radio Operator - heart disease, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. (new 2010).

Radio Operator - Cancer of the brain and lungs, kidney stones, diverticular disease (colon), heart disease, aortic aneurysm, atrial fibrillation and chronic heart failure - Deceased (new 2010).

For such a small navy, the RNZN represents a large working group with common health problems and epidemiologists should recognise this. Did my health problems start with that massive exposure back in 1965 or from the years of gradual exposure sitting in wireless offices and communications centres?

My next lot of research is to find out why the RAN/RNZN extended the safety radiation radius around HF base tuners and the changing of the RADHAZ signs to encompass a larger area, including the words "possible carcinogenic area" in 1998.

Report suggests radiation from Vatican Radio increases cancer risk
By Carol Glatz
Catholic News Service

http://www.catholicnews.com/data/stories/cns/1002887.htm

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- The head of Vatican Radio expressed astonishment at findings that suggest there is a link between exposure to electromagnetic radiation from the radio's broadcasting towers and an increased risk of developing cancer.

Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, general director of Vatican Radio and head of the Vatican press office, said international scientific studies have never shown that such a connection exists.

"Vatican Radio will present its own comments and counter-deductions from its own technical consultants as soon as possible," Father Lombardi said in a statement aired on Vatican Radio July 13.
It was important to remember, he said, that Vatican Radio has always adhered to international norms concerning electromagnetic emissions limits. In 2001, the radio entered into an agreement with Italy to adhere to even stricter limits so as to "carefully respond, as is due, to the potential concerns of nearby residents," he said.

Inhabitants around the radio's transmission center in Santa Maria di Galeria, outside of Rome, have alleged that the radiation levels had increased the risk of cancer, especially in children.

An international panel, commissioned by Italy's health ministry, concluded in 2001 that there was no connection between the broadcaster's antennae radiation and child leukemia rates, adding that leukemia rates in the area were no higher than in the nation's capital.

However, a recent report commission by an Italian judge said data suggested there is "an important, consistent, and significant association between residents' exposure to Vatican Radio facilities and an increased risk of the illnesses leukemia and lymphoma in children."

The report, leaked to the press July 13, studied the incidence of leukemia-related deaths of residents who lived within a seven-mile radius of the facilities over the past 30 years.

In 2005, Cardinal Roberto Tucci, former president of Vatican Radio's management committee, and Jesuit Father Pasquale Borgomeo, formerly the general director, were found guilty of the criminal charge of "dangerously showering objects" on residents near the Santa Maria di Galeria transmission center.

In 2007, an Italian appeals court overturned the convictions.

Study links Vatican Radio's waves to cancer risk: Report

http://www.vancouversun.com/health/Study+links+Vatican+Radio+waves+cancer+risk+Report/3276415/story.html

VATICAN CITY - A court-ordered study has found that electromagnetic waves beamed by Vatican Radio leave residents living near the station's antennas at a higher risk of cancer, Italian media said Wednesday.

"There has been an important, coherent and meaningful correlation between exposure to Vatican Radio's structures and the risk of leukaemia and lymphoma in children," the report said, according to the daily La Stampa.

The report also warned of "important risks" of dying of cancer for people who had resided at least 10 years within a nine-kilometre (5.5-mile) radius of the radio's giant antenna towers near Cesano, some 20 kilometres north of Rome.

The radio's director, Federico Lombardi, disputed the report, saying: "Vatican Radio is astonished to hear the news on the results of the study."

Lombardi, who is also the Vatican spokesman, added: "Vatican Radio has always observed international directives on electromagnetic emissions and since 2001 has observed more restrictive norms set by Italy to allay the concerns of the neighbouring populations."

Speaking on Vatican Radio, he said: "According to international scientific literature on the matter, the existence of a causal link like the one apparently hypothesised by the report had never been established."

A Rome judge ordered the report in 2005 as part of an investigation into a complaint filed in 2001 by Cesano residents who alleged health hazards posed by the electromagnetic waves.

Vatican Radio's then-president Roberto Tucci and director Pasquale Borgomeo were among defendants in a case that was thrown out last year after the statute of limitations expired.

At the time, Lombardi said he was not satisfied with the result since he had expected an acquittal.

The Vatican spokesman said the Holy See would soon publish its own experts' conclusion in the case.

A 2001 investigation by Italy's environment ministry showed that magnetic fields in the area were six times more powerful than allowed, while Rome's Lazio region estimated that the rate of deaths from leukaemia among children in the Cesano area was three times higher than in adjoining areas.

Vatican City, the world's smallest state, is an enclave of Rome covering 0.44 square kilometres (0.17 square miles).
