Smart Meter Blackmail ?

I have pasted two Letters to the Editor that were published in my local paper below. They were published almost in their entirety. The second one was published without most of the sentences containing links.

I am passing these on for two reasons.

One, to encourage you all to write Letters to the Editor in your local papers. If you can get them published in state or national papers even better, but local papers often publish any letter that is not libelous. This is often a very useful tool to get the word out in your community.

People are often reluctant to contact a person they do not know directly, so do not be discouraged if you do not get contacts even if you put personal contact information in your letter. Be sure to put enough information that people can research the problem on their own and know what specifically to do in your locale.

Two, to highlight the importance of filing complaints, particularly with utilities and the PSC/PUC on paper.

Complaints on paper are treated differently from those taken over the phone. If transmitting meters are a serious problem for you, it is very important to file a paper complaint with documentation and request for accommodation. Paper complaints are responded to on paper. This gives you the documentation you will need to proceed further, whether that is to filing a complaint with the DOJ about an ADA violation or talking to your legislators about requiring an opt-out program or taking legal action. They also, as I note in the editorial below, can trigger the necessity for a more formal legal treatment of the issue if enough people file them. This varies state to state and country to country. In Wisconsin, 25 complaints on paper should trigger further action.

Best,

Catherine

Dear Editor,

Two weeks ago we received notice that We Energies would be disconnecting our electricity in 48 hours. No, we are not in arrears. We are customers in good standing and this is still within the moratorium period. They should not be disconnecting even delinquent ratepayers. Their excuse - a supposed safety violation.

We have padlocked OUR meter pedestal shut so that they cannot install the new transmitting electrical meter, a meter we know to be hazardous to our health. There is no safety issue since even the utility engineer agreed that they can easily disconnect the power to our house in an emergency by removing the fuse in our ground mount transformer.

In reality, they are trying to disconnect us because they do not want to allow us to refuse the transmitting meter. The transmitting meters they want to install transmit an impulse of microwave radiation every 6 seconds. I already have radiofrequency sickness and my family is sensitive to it. We would begin experiencing symptoms immediately and worsen over time.

Transmitting meters are making people across the country sick. Prominent symptoms being reported are heart arrhythmias, headaches, poor sleep, low energy, inability to concentrate, short-term memory problems, facial flushing and rash. A more complete list can be found at:

www.electricalpollution.com

Other wireless devices and compact fluorescent lightbulbs can also cause these symptoms. One way to find out if there is a relationship between your symptoms and exposure to radiofrequency radiation, which includes microwaves, is to try reducing your exposure.

The Solutions Page at

www.electricalpollution.com

has suggestions for doing that.

If you are interested in learning more about radiofrequency radiation and health, you may want to watch the Full Signal DVD or read Disconnect by Devra Davis, PhD or Dirty Electricity by Dr. Sam Milham, all should be available through the library.

We just received notice that the Public Service Commission is going to stand by and allow the utility to force us to take a utility meter we know to be dangerous and disconnect our power if we will not. This is a travesty. Read more at

www.electricalpollution.com

to find out whether radiofrequency radiation is making you sick and what you can do about it.

Dear Editor,

We wrote to you about the health effects caused by We Energies' new AMR meters and the bullying tactics used against us. (Tuesday, April 19, 2011)

We were disappointed by Joan Schafer's (Vice President of Customer Relations, We Energies) disingenuous response (Wednesday May 4, 2011) to the issues we raised.

The FCC standards cited by We Energies are only designed to protect a 6 foot 185 pound male from tissue heating during a six minute exposure. They are not designed to protect even this large male from the biological effects that exposure to radiofrequency radiation cause. Nor do they protect smaller males, women, children, babies, or pregnant women from either tissue heating or biological effects. Norbert Hankin of the Radiation Protection Division of the EPA even says so

(http://www.emrpolicy.org/litigation/case_law/docs/noi_epa_response.pdf ;

http://www.emrpolicy.org/litigation/case_law/docs/epa_to_fcc_3nov_93.pdf ;

http://www.emrpolicy.org/litigation/case_law/docs/exhibit_a.pdf).

We Energies' new AMR meter transmits a large pulse of microwave radiation once every six seconds. When the amount of radiation is averaged over the entire 6 seconds, the average amount is in compliance with the FCC tissue heating guidelines. Pulsed signals are very biologically active. Nerves, for example, use pulses. See

www.electricalpollution.com/smartmeters.html

to find a basic explanation of the cardiac and neurological effects of radiofrequency radiation.

Ms. Schafer claims to be concerned about safety. Yet, the meters that We Energies is trying to force on us, and has installed throughout the area, are NOT UL approved. There is no UL approval seal on the meters. Nor have the two different UL employees we have spoken to been able to find any record of this meter in their database. A different non-UL listed AMR meter being used in California has caused fires

Furthermore, both We Energies and the PSC continue to ignore the dangerous levels of radiofrequencies present on the electrical grid. It has taken one and a half months, two written complaints and one conversation with Sue Crane, Manager Special Projects at We Energies, to even get We Energies to suggest a cursory measurement of the radiofrequency radiation radiating from our transformer, and wiring, and causing heart rhythm abnormalities for our family, particularly our children.

We Energies has a history of installing transmitting meters against the express wishes of the property owners and refusing to change them back. We know from experience that the transmitting meters would cause us to be unhealthy and miserable. We had to leave a family Christmas celebration early because our young son was crying and begging to leave since he felt wretched, this in spite of the family, food, presents, and candy. He was fine by the time we arrived home an hour later. The house we were at had transmitting gas and electrical meters.

So, to keep our families safe, we installed a padlock on our meter pedestals. During a conversation about the supposed safety issue and the fact that We Energies can easily disconnect power to our farm at our transformer in case of an emergency, Tom Held (Supervising Engineer Meter Technology) concurred saying "I know. They can pull the fuse."

We Energies has generously presented us with three options: take the transmitting meters; take the transmitting meters and move them within our property, at our considerable expense, - wasted money since the meters have a range of miles; or get off the grid. We asked for the entirely reasonable accommodation of self-reporting monthly using their telephone call-in system with verification during their legally required meter checks every six months. In spite of this being in the PSC statutes as an option, We Energies refused our request for reasonable accommodation, as has the PSC.

Ours is not the only health complaint We Energies has received, but it is not required to tabulate or report them as specifically related to the meter. People commonly report experiencing heart arrhythmias, headaches, poor sleep, low energy, inability to concentrate, short-term memory problems, facial flushing and rash. If you are experiencing health problems related to a transmitting meter and have not received help from your utility company, complain in writing to the Commissioners at the PSC. It is important that you send a copy of the complaint to your legislators with a cover letter asking that they introduce legislation requiring tabulation of transmitting meter related health problems, as well as requiring removal of transmitting meters and replacement with either non-transmitting induction-type watt hour meters or non-transmitting mechanical gas or water meters. If over twenty five written complaints are filed, the Commission can no longer treat them as informal complaints and should open a docket.

Letter to accompany cell phone payment / Local 2 Investigates Smart Meter Fires etc.

W.E.E.P. News

Wireless Electrical and Electromagnetic Pollution News

8 June 2011

I usually pay my monthly cell phone bill online. (YES, I have one of the little beasties — it resides in my purse and only feels its ON button pushed perhaps once every 2 months, if that.) I realize that plenty of us have written letters something like this before, it surely seems a waste of time/effort/$, but maybe the time is ripe to correspond "on the record" in droves again? I was thinking that this month I would mail in my payment to Bell Mobility via their P.R. department via Registered Mail accompanied by a letter something like the following. Should I c.c. Health Canada and other government varieties and media? Also, if I made any typos/boo-boos please correct me.

Barb Payne
------------------------------

BY REGISTERED MAIL
WITHOUT PREJUDICE

On May 31st, 2011, I was informed by an announcement from WHO's IARC that the radiation emitted from both my cell phone and your cellular service towers/antennae is a possible carcinogen.

Although you are not the manufacturer of the cell phone, I did purchase it from you. It has been brought to my attention by others (not by you) that both the phone and the service you have sold to me has exposed me, and continues to expose me, to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (the physical agent classified as a possible carcinogen on May 31st, 2011) if I use my cell phone and also when I do not use my cell phone. It has also been brought to my attention by others (not by you) that information related to my exposure to radiation that occurs during normal expected use of my cell phone may have been in a manual packaged with the phone or available digitally via Internet. If you publish information related to my exposure to radiation emitted by your cellular service towers/antennae, that has not been brought to my attention by you nor by anyone else.

I am a consumer who does sometimes read more "fine print" than perhaps other consumers read. The voluminous paperwork you provided in-store that required my signature in order for me to proceed to give you money to complete the purchase of a cellular phone was daunting. The paperwork was presented by your representative in a manner that, in effect, meant to me that I was being encouraged to not be concerned about its contents. I did pour over the paperwork for several minutes but could see that, effectively, my only choice if I wanted a cell phone was to sign the paperwork. I didn't ask if I could take the unsigned paperwork with me to consult a lawyer before I signed it, so I don't know if I would have been able to do that. To the best of my recollection, I have never signed any paperwork in relation to the service you provide me, if such paperwork regarding the service was presented to me at the time of my most recent cell phone purchase I was not aware of it; my account had already been active for years, I merely purchased a new cell phone. At no time—past, present and/or future—did I sign any paperwork that clearly divulged that normal intended and expected use of your products and your services causes me to be exposed to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields.

At no time—past, present and/or future—have I agreed, either implicitly or explicitly, to be exposed to the radiofrequency electromagnetic fields emitted by your products and services. At no time—past, present and/or future—have I acknowledged, either implicitly or explicitly, that you have informed me and/or warned me of physical agents (as defined by WHO's IARC) in carcinogenicity classifications 1, 2A, 2B, or 3 that I will be exposed to by normal expected use of a cell phone and/or by being in any location on, or above, or below our planet's surface where your cellular service towers/anetnnae's emissions are part of the environment.

I'm sending my current balance owing to you via this Registered Mail because I wish to explicitly inform you that any past, present and/or future payment of my account and/or use of my cell phone is not implicit or explicit acceptance by me of a product and/or service that exposes me to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields. I also wish to explicitly inform you that any past, present and/or future payment of my account and/or use of my cell phone is not implicit or explicit instruction/request/agreement/etc. directing you to emit radiofrequency electromagnetic fields into any environment.

http://www.abajournal.com/news/article/supreme_court_seeks_us_views_on_cell_phone_suit_as_who_announces_cancer_dan/

Back in the early 1990s, I worked at a MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) facility with very experienced co-workers (Interventional Radiology
Techs, RNs and Radiologists), who literally curtailed their use of cell phones based on the type and specific LOCATION of the tumors they were beginning to see on Brain MRI imaging. Apparently, it was thought to be very rare for this type of tumor to show up above the EAR or even in and around the male beltline (where Men often attached their cell phones). At that time, I recall reading everything I could possibly find on the subject and absolutley NO research had been conducted in the US. Most likely because the Communications Industry was pretty much headquartered here in the US and any form of brain tumor research associated with cell phone use would
prohibilt profits.

Of interest, at that time, there was one (1) research study performed and financed by a small country in Europe that was used in a highly publicized
US lawsuit case brought forth by a physician to support his claim that his
brain tumor (cancer) was caused by his consistent cell phone use.

Unfortunately, the physician eventually lost his legal battle and, soon thereafter, his own life. Sadly, and NOT surprisingly, the physician's legal opposition included testimony from the Entire US Communications Industry. Strangely enough, sometime AFTER the lawsuit, the Communications Industry began changing the location of the cell phone antenna which was eventually placed further away from the brain.

A few years ago, a pediatric neurologist examining one of my sons diagnosted tachycardia among other neurological issues connected with environmental exposures.

Her office was near a military base. My other son experienced tachycardia as well. Both struggle with the issues described in group 2, but have improved since we left the densely populated highly radiated area. Wifi and solar power are infesting schools however and so there is no real way to avoid this stuff. The take home message here in my opinion is that if tachycardia is happening...don't brush it off.

I have a friend who lived near where we used to live. She was starting to have major problems with heart racing in cities, and she also felt great relief at a B&B which was near or in that special low noise zone in West Virginia. She did not realize why she felt relief, she just noted that the visit to that spot was very comfortable for her compared to the rest of the trip which was to New York City. She was focused on mold and chemical exposures, rather than RF exposures. The B&B was musty, so she was surprised that she tolerated the room.

She did seek treatment for the heart issues, but it did not work out as she became overwhelmed with the problems some of which included problems with her husband's health.

I am trying to say that we should not ignore the neurological/heart complaints as they are not necessarily chronic, in some cases, they can require immediate attention as this article suggests.

Please wake up MD's! We can get through this, but we shouldn't be complacent.

Despite a 500-fold increase in radiation exposure from cell-phones since 1990, brain cancer rates have fallen.

Answer:

In the time span of 1990 - 2010, a number of things changed for billions of persons:

At first, the walkie-talkie type of communication used strong signals and a different frequency bands + analog (easily over 1000 microWatt/cm2)

Then, there were the first cell-phones, using strong signals (near 0.8 - 0.9 GHz), analog (often more than 1000 microWatt/cm2)

More recently, we have a prevalence of weaker / variable peak signals (near 1.1 - 1.3GHz, digital (usually 10 to 300 microWatt/cm2)

Even more recently, we have a weak / many variable peaks signals ( between 2.5 - 10 GHz) technology, with high signal contents, some of which is used at a distance - i.e. texting, visuals, etc. (usually 0.5 - 100 microWatt/cm2).

However, the technology is clearly other aspects of human biology faster than it hurts a specific type of cell in the brain. So, the actual death rates from wireless technology have increased dramatically - proven by the Korean veterans statistics - where even accidental death rates increase from accumulated exposure of microwaves in the electromagnetic bandwidth employed by the current commercial wireless "i" systems..

Prof. Olle Johansson's morbidity / pathology charts for Sweden demonstrate this very graphically (see the several reference below).

Note that the fertility / sperm rates have also been very adversely affected. Many segments of society can become within 1 to 2 generations almost totally sterile.

We also have the infamous interactions between psychoactive drugs and wireless technology and other adverse social, psychological, mental disorders among soldiers, students, and teenagers (especially in Japan, China).

And, of course, there is the potential for latent development of brain cancers, from the survivor remainders..

Andrew Michrowski

Swedish health indicators: introduction of wireless technology:

New cases of prostate cancer: men aged 50–59, Stockholm County; Lung cancer in elderly (male (M) and female (F)); Facial Melanoma among people <60 years since; Alzheimer's mortality.

From: Apparent decreases in Swedish public health indicators after 1997 Örjan Hallberg, Olle Johansson, Neuroscience, Karolinska Institute, 2008

In 2009, Danish scientist Fredrik Soderqvist found that people who talk often on cell phones have a higher concentration of the transtyretin protein than those who do not. Transtyretin is formed in the liver; it helps transport vitamin A in the body and plays an important role in nervous diseases such as Alzheimers.

Subject: WHO's IARC Announcement

Dear Ms. May,Mr. Layton, Mr. Garrison, Mr. Atamanenko,

I am writing to you as the MPs in whom I am placing my faith that something can be done to address the woefully inadequate radiation safety codes currently in place in Health Canada.

As Mr. Atamanenko knows, I have been sending studies to Health Canada, the several ministers of health, and the Prime MInister for several years. I have been advising that top scientists from around the world have shown health effects, serious health effects, from prolonged exposure to electromagnetic radiation (EMR) from cell and radio towers, cell phones, WiFi, etc. But the consistent response I receive is that Health Canada believes there is no evidence of harm and that it follows the WHO guideline.

On May 31, International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a panel of WHO, announced that electromagnetic radiation has been classified as a 2b carcinogen, the same classification given to lead, DDT and many industrial chemicals. Many other countries are taking measures as a result of this decision. Shamefully Health Canada has yet to make a statement, except for James McNamee who downplayed the significance, even though he attended the conference. Now it appears they will ignore this WHO warning.

It is time that Health Canada be forced to admit that EMR is dangerous. Policies must be put into place due to the fact that siting of cell and radio transmitters near homes and schools can cause harm especially to children, that cellphones are being used without warning labels and instructions for safer usage, and that WiFi is being put into schools.

Time is not on our side. More people are becoming sensitive to EMR, more children are suffering from prolonged exposure with each passing day. It is time precautionary action is taken. We cannot wait for more studies while 1000s already exist showing the harm that results from this carcinogen.

I know that many citizens have raised these issues with their MPs, and that many would support Parliamentary action to change policies. Please, bring a strong bill forward and encourage an open debate on this topic.

Sincerely,

Sharon Noble

Havas, Letter to the Editor / They changed their tune / etc

W.E.E.P. News

Wireless Electrical and Electromagnetic Pollution News

8 June 2011

From: Magda Havas

Letter to the Editor,

Peterborough Examiner, published June 6, 2011

We don't tolerate bullying in the schoolyard so why do we tolerate it in the school board? Teachers who are questioning the role out of WiFi in schools across Ontario, those who are electrically sensitive and worry about what effect this will have on their health, and those who are concerned about the effect it may have on their students are being silenced.

Principals have told several teachers that they are not to mention or to participate in any action that questions the Board's decision about WiFi. Messages posted on bulletin boards in the school have been removed. Teachers have been reprimanded and threatened.

Parents are being silenced. Schools refuse to inform parents about when WiFi will be activated in their children's school. Parents are forbidden to take their own measurements in schools that currently have WiFi or are scheduled for WiFi. They are unable to send flyers home to other parents to ask if parents agree with the Board's decisions about WiFi in the classroom.

Even without the May 31st 2011 announcement by the World Health Organization that radio frequency radiation (the type of radiation generated by WiFi) may cause cancer, this type of behavior of school boards is totally unacceptable.

When did schools get the right to expose children to potential carcinogens without the consent of their parent? When did schools get the right to threaten teachers who question their policies? When did we develop such an intolerant system that is more common is fascist regimes than in democratic societies?

Unfortunately those who are making decisions are ignorant of the technology and ignorant of the science that documents the adverse effects of radio frequency radiation generated by wireless routers. Back in the late 1980s we were concerned about the lack of science literacy among our students. Unfortunately, we are witnessing the consequences when those in positions of authority do not understand the science upon which their decisions are based, decisions that affect the lives of so many.

This ignorance coupled with intolerance and bullying is unacceptable and urgently needs to be addressed.

***

The same day the above letter appeared in the Peterborough Examiner (Jun 6, 2011), I received an email from Diane Lloyd, Chairperson, Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, denying me the right to speak at a public meeting scheduled for June 27th in Peterborough at Queen Mary Public School. The board is allowing those who have the same view as the school board to speak but not those who have dissenting views and who believe that the microwave radiation generated by WiFi is harmful to students and their teachers. They are allowing other professors from Trent University to speak as well as the Medical Officer of Health, who has often voiced her lack of concern about this radiation in the classroom. Ms Lloyd writes, "This meeting is being held to outline what our technology plan is and to respond to those questions . . . it is not a debate."

What is so unfortunately is that many of the schools already have wired internet access and Peterborough has fiber optics in the community, yet the school board is "dead set" on installing WiFi irrespective of how the radiation may affect students and staff! Introducing WiFi into schools that already have wired connections is a waste of money that could be better spent. But much more important than this is the unnecessarily exposure of students and staff to microwave radiation. Only time will tell how this radiation will affect their health, behavior, ability to learn, and ability to reproduce.

Dr Magda Havas

drmagdahavas@gmail.com

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They changed their tune

Have you noticed that prior to the IARC / WHO cancer announcement, many people were quick to point out that the World Health Organisation had stated that microwave radiation was safe and did not cause cancer. Now that the WHO has changed their minds and announced cell phone radiation is a possible carcinogen, those same people are pointing to the WHO as being alarmists and they are trying to downplay the decision.

RCMP Criminal Investigation Request

Hi All

For the last several days I have been working on the attached letter (RCMP).

In the letter, I have asked The Royal Canadian Mounted Police to conduct a criminal investigation of Health Canada and Industry Canada.

I am requesting your help to get the information distributed to your local news outlets and to supportive political candidates. There may still be time to make this an election issue.

If you agree with what I am asking of the RCMP, here are some actions that you could consider, which may help everyone:

1. You could send a letter in support of my request, to the RCMP, stating that you agree with the information and you also want them to conduct a criminal investigation.

2. You could write your own letter of concern and forward it to the RCMP. (Please feel free to copy my letter or use portions that will assist you).

3. You could send scientific evidence or important information to the RCMP to assist them in their investigation.

4. If you are a scientist or you are very knowledgeable about EMR, you can offer the RCMP your professional assistance.

5. If you live in a country other than Canada, please consider sending a similar request to the national police service of your own country.

If you do take any of these actions, I would appreciate a copy of the information.

Thanks and best wishes

Wireless Radiation Safety Council (WRSC) Press Conference Materials

W.E.E.P. News

Wireless Electrical and Electromagnetic Pollution News

19 April 2011

Hi All

There is so much important information attached to this message that it is being sent separate from the regular WEEP news. I hope that you will read all the information and then find your own methods of distributing it, to make everybody's lives and the environment safer.

I suggest that relevant documents be provided to all your Local and National Newspapers, Magazines, TV and Radio Stations so that the press is fully aware of this important initiative.

Documents should be provided to Pupils, Teachers, Schools and Education Boards in your area, along with a challenge for them to stop using Wi Fi, or to not implement it in the future and to make this an important election issue.

Your Hospitals, Doctors offices, Clinics, Health Officials and Health Ministries should also be provided with Wi Fi documents and questioned about their use of wireless technologies and whether they make their facilities safe.

Do not forget your Friends and Families. This is good solid information that they should be able to understand and act upon.

If you are a person who has stayed in the background and never been involved in EMF / EMR activism, now is the time to get involved, even if you just forward the information to others, your help would be much appreciated. The invisible electrical pollution that we are all exposed to is rapidly getting worse. Now is the time to lend a hand and get involved.

Our thanks go to all the people who have taken the effort to put all this material together and then made it available for everyone's benefit.

Regards

Martin Weatherall

Wi Fi in Schools

I have attached a letter just sent to Victoria School Boards on the dangers of Wi Fi and the negligence of Health Canada in not sharing this information with provinces as well as their school districts. Share it with your group including the Simcoe School District. Is Wi-Fi frying our brains? Fears that cloud of 'electrosmog' could be harming humans

By Alasdair Philips
30th November 2010

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1334291/Electrosmog-warning-effect-bleed-bark-denude-tree-foliage.html?ito=feeds-newsxml

As winter arrives with a vengeance, the last of this year's glorious autumn leaves are falling in our parks and woodlands.

But this week came worrying evidence that Mother Nature is not the only force denuding our trees of their foliage.

Research in the Netherlands suggested that outbreaks of bleeding bark and dying leaves which have blighted the country's urban trees may be caused by radiation from the Wi-Fi networks now so integral to life in offices, schools and homes.

As a qualified electronics engineer, I am not surprised by such findings. I have long been concerned about the harmful effects of the electro-magnetic radiation emitted not only by Wi-Fi devices but many other common modern gadgets, including mobile and cordless phones, wireless games consoles and microwave ovens.

Much though I love trees, and worrying though I find this research, what really unnerves me is the effect these electro-magnetic fields (or EMFs) are having on humans, surrounding us as they do with a constant cloud of 'electrosmog'.

I am no Luddite. When I started work in the 1960s, I was involved in building walkie-talkies. I thought they were just brilliant and that electronic technology would save the world. But over the decades since, my scientific background has made it impossible for me to ignore the overwhelming evidence about the damage wreaked by this electrosmog.

It is not the existence of these radio waves that is the problem so much as the use we make of them. Rather than being emitted at a constant rate, technology demands they are 'pulsed' in short and frequent bursts which appear to be far more biologically harmful.

Not the least is their impact on our ability to reproduce. It is well documented that average male sperm counts are falling by two per cent a year. Many causes have been suggested, from stressful lifestyles to poor diet and hormones in our water supplies.

But studies in infertility clinics show problems with sperm dying off or not moving properly are most common in men who use mobiles extensively. This has also been demonstrated in the laboratory.

Mobiles are not the only problem. Many laptops are now equipped with Wi-Fi which sends out pulses every second as it maintains contact with the nearest access point. Young men with these devices on their laps are submitting their testicles to strong EMFs at close range, oblivious to the damage they may be doing to their chances of future fatherhood.

EMFs have also been shown to affect the brain, suppressing production of melatonin, the hormone controlling whether we feel happy or sad. In 2004, researchers at the University of Malaga found that significant exposure to EMFs increases the chances of developing depression 40-fold.

They also linked electrosmog to headaches, irritability, unusual tiredness and sleeping disorders.

This has been confirmed in research by the respected Karolinska Institute in Sweden. Sponsored by the leading mobile phone companies, it showed that using handsets just before going to bed caused people to take longer to reach deeper stages of sleep. They also spent less time in each of these stages, so interfering with the body's ability to repair damage suffered during the day.

This is particularly alarming given the tendency for teenagers and children to sleep with their mobile phones under the pillows so that they can answer late-night texts from friends.

Parents who allow their children to do so may be taking a significant gamble with their health.

This year saw the publication of the Interphone study carried out in 13 countries including the UK, and examining the links between mobile phone use and brain tumours. It suggested that those who had made heavy use of mobiles for a decade or more faced twice the risk of glioma, the most common type of brain tumour.

And this was a study based on the period between 1994 and 2004 when 'heavy' usage was defined as two to three hours per month. A conservative estimate of average mobile phone use now is approximately half an hour a day, seven days a week.

Since brain tumours often develop very slowly it may be many years before the full impact of our reliance on mobiles becomes clear. But they are already implicated in another area of concern to health professionals, the onset of dementia in those under 65.

Experts are at a loss to explain the increase in this condition which has seen a surge in demand for pre-senile dementia units across the country. But can we really be surprised when a study at the Institute of Environmental Medicine in Sweden confirmed this month that exposure to EMFs significantly accelerates brain degeneration?

The risks posed by EMFs are recognised not only by scientists, but hard-headed commercial organisations. In 1997, the insurance company Swiss-Re identified EMFs as likely to cause the biggest increase in claims in years to come. Swiss-Re and other insurers have therefore refused to indemnify the mobile phone operators against health claims from their customers.

Even so, we should not hold out much hope of our politicians protecting us from EMFs. The mobile phone industry in the UK contributes around £20 billion in tax every year, so it's hardly likely the Government will take action to reduce the number of calls.

Indeed, it seems to be going in almost the opposite direction, encouraging the installation of Wi-Fi networks in our schools with tactics which sometimes verge on coercion. I've been told about a school which was threatened that it would receive no further government funding for computer technology if it did not install Wi-Fi.

In the absence of official intervention, it's down to all of us to protect ourselves. My aim as a campaigner is not to scare people but inform them about the risks, so they can choose to take precautions.

Not everyone will want to follow my example. Because of our concerns about electrosmog, my wife and I have moved to a cottage in Scotland out of range of any mobile phone network.

But there are small steps which we can all take. We should all try to use hands-free sets. And women should stop carrying mobiles in their bras (breast tissue being particularly susceptible to mobile phone microwaves), a trend which is becoming alarmingly fashionable.

We should also avoid cordless phones. Their base stations transmit 100 pulses a second, 24/7, even if you're not using the phone, and at power levels equivalent to having a small mobile phone mast in your home.

You might also consider whether you really need wireless internet access in your home. One option is to buy dLAN adaptors which transmit the internet signal around the house by way of your ordinary electrical wiring.

Such changes will require small adjustments to our modern lifestyles. But until the evidence against EMFs is proven or disproven, these are surely sacrifices well worth making.

Israel was also one of the earliest and remains one of the heaviest users of wireless technology and as such has come through with some of the first epidemiological studies that confirm the cause and effect relationship with cell phones and a number of cancers. I imagine that this is also a factor in the declining sperm quality.

Legislating light bulbs has dark side

By Bronwyn Eyre, The StarPhoenix
I recently happened upon a forlorn news item that put me into a slow boil.
"The last major GE factory making ordinary incandescent light bulbs in the United States is closing, marking a small, sad exit for a product and company that can trace their roots to Thomas Edison's innovations in the 1870s," the story began.
The factory, in Winchester, Va., is closing as a result of the 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act, passed by Congress, that set standards essentially banning ordinary incandescents by 2014. The law will, of course, force millions of households to switch to more efficient bulbs.
In 2007, the Harper government also decided incandescent bulbs would be phased out in Canada in 2012. In Europe, the phase-out of the traditional light bulb has already begun.
As has the hoarding of incandescents, on both sides of the Atlantic.
Most anti-CFLers talk of the sickly light the new compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) emit. But many also feel extremely uneasy about the dangers they embody.
A LOOK AT HEALTH CANADA'S WEBSITE QUICKLY SHOWS WHY.
After a brief mention of how ultraviolet radiation from CFLs can affect people with skin sensitivities, the site details a list of imperatives should a CFL, which contains mercury, be broken -- as follows:
- Remove people and pets from the room and ventilate it for at least 15 minutes prior to starting cleanup;
- Don't use a vacuum to clean up the initial breakage, as it will spread mercury vapour throughout the area;
- Scoop up the broken pieces with two pieces of stiff paper or cardboard, not a broom;
- Use tape, then a damp towel or cloth, to pick up any remaining glass or powder;
- Place the broken glass and cleanup materials in a tight-fitting glass container to further minimize the release of mercury vapour;
- If the rug is removable, take it outside and shake and air it thoroughly;
- Dispose of the waste at a household hazardous waste location as soon as possible, not in your household trash.
There's also increasing talk about the "dirty electricity" compact fluorescents give off. Drawing on reports by an international group of scientists that link brain malignancies to electromagnetic radiation (EMR) in dirty electricity, syndicated columnist Dr. W. Gifford-Jones recently counselled his readers to "avoid low voltage halogen tubes and energy-efficient compact fluorescent lighting."
Still feel like buying a CFL?
I realize the estimated life of a CFL is roughly 10 times that of an incandescent (although its use in frigid weather reduces that considerably, as does frequent on-off switching).
But who wants to have to deal with a daily dose of dirty electricity as well as mercury contamination in the event of a broken bulb?
These concerns aside, what if you just want to stay with incandescents because you like them? Or because you resent the fact that virtually all manufacturing of light bulbs will now be carried out in China, where labour is cheaper? Or because you suspect other unanticipated consequences?
For example, some years ago Ontario Hydro offered rebates to consumers who bought energy efficient fridges. Many did, but then moved their old fridges downstairs to use as "beer fridges" -- thereby adding to energy demand. It's human nature: As efficiencies improve, utilization tends to climb.
With the conversion to CFLs, the most irksome aspect of all is the nanny-statism behind it -- what some refer to as "light bulb socialism."
I, for one, don't appreciate the imminent banning of a fixture whose light may be "dirty" and which, when broken -- and bulb breakages occur in all households from time to time -- may make my house toxic. If that makes me a luddite dinosaur, well, I want to be free to be a luddite dinosaur.
I also want to be able to buy incandescent bulbs and not have some political legislation prevent me from doing so.
I'm reminded of the European bureaucrats who love to invent killjoy regulations -- such as the "bent cucumber rule," whereby any cucumber with a curvature of more than 10 millimeters per 10 centimeters in length cannot be categorized as "class one."
Banning the incandescent bulb is similar madness. But as they say, we're generally unaware of the madnesses of our own times.

Should You Be Snuggling With Your Cellphone?

by RANDALL STROSS
November 14, 2010, New York edition

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/14/business/14digi.html?src=me&ref=homepage

WARNING: Holding a cellphone against your ear may be hazardous to your health. So may stuffing it in a pocket against your body.

I'm paraphrasing here. But the legal departments of cellphone manufacturers slip a warning about holding the phone against your head or body into the fine print of the little slip that you toss aside when unpacking your phone.

Apple, for example, doesn't want iPhones to come closer than 5/8 of an inch; Research In Motion, BlackBerry's manufacturer, is still more cautious: keep a distance of about an inch.

The warnings may be missed by an awful lot of customers. The United States has 292 million wireless numbers in use, approaching one for every adult and child, according to C.T.I.A.-The Wireless Association, the cellphone industry's primary trade group. It says that as of June, about a quarter of domestic households were wireless-only.

If health issues arise from ordinary use of this hardware, it would affect not just many customers but also a huge industry.

Our voice calls — we chat on our cellphones 2.26 trillion minutes annually, according to the C.T.I.A. — generate $109 billion for the wireless carriers.

The cellphone instructions-cum-warnings were brought to my attention by Devra Davis, an epidemiologist who has worked for the University of Pittsburgh and has published a book about cellphone radiation, "Disconnect." I had assumed that radiation specialists had long ago established that worries about low-energy radiation were unfounded. Her book, however, surveys the scientific investigations and concludes that the question is not yet settled.

Brain cancer is a concern that Ms. Davis takes up. Over all, there has not been a general increase in its incidence since cellphones arrived. But the average masks an increase in brain cancer in the 20-to-29 age group and a drop for the older population.

"Most cancers have multiple causes," she says, but she points to laboratory research that suggests mechanisms by which low-energy radiation could damage cells in ways that could possibly lead to cancer.

Children are more vulnerable to radiation than adults, Ms. Davis and other scientists point out.

Radiation that penetrates only two inches into the brain of an adult will reach much deeper into the brains of children because their skulls are thinner and their brains contain more absorptive fluid. No field studies have been completed to date on cellphone radiation and children, she says.

Henry Lai, a research professor in the bioengineering department at the University of Washington, began laboratory radiation studies in 1980 and found that rats exposed to radiofrequency radiation had damaged brain DNA.

He maintains a database that holds 400 scientific papers on possible biological effects of radiation from wireless communication. He found that 28 percent of studies with cellphone industry funding showed some sort of effect, while 67 percent of studies without such funding did so. "That's not trivial," he said.

The unit of measurement for radiofrequency exposure is called the specific absorption rate, or SAR. The Federal Communications Commission mandates that the SAR produced by phones be no more than 1.6 watts per kilogram.

One study listed by Mr. Lai found effects like loss of memory in rats exposed to SAR values in the range of 0.0006 to 0.06 watts per kilogram. "I did not expect to see effects at low levels," he said.

The city of San Francisco passed an ordinance this year that requires cellphone retailers to post SARs prominently. This angered the C.T.I.A., which announced that it would no longer schedule trade shows in the city.

The association maintains that all F.C.C.-approved phones are perfectly safe.

John Walls, the association's vice president for public affairs, said: "What science tells us is, 'If the sign on the highway says safe clearance is 12 feet,' it doesn't matter if your vehicle is 4 feet, 6 feet or 10 feet tall; you're going to pass through safely. The same theory applies to SAR values and wireless devices."

The association has set up a separate Web site, cellphonehealthfacts.com.

Four attractive young people are seen on the home page, each with a cellphone pressed against the ear — and all four are beaming as they listen. By this visual evidence, cellphone use seems to be correlated with elation, not cancer.

The largest study of cellphone use and brain cancer has been the Interphone International Case-Control Study, in which researchers in 13 developed countries (but not the United States) participated. It interviewed brain cancer patients, 30 to 59 years old, from 2000 to 2004, then cobbled together a control group of people who had not regularly used a cellphone.

The study concluded that using a cellphone seemed to decrease the risk of brain tumors, which the authors acknowledged was "implausible" and a product of the study's methodological shortcomings.

The authors included some disturbing data in an appendix available only online. These showed that subjects who used a cellphone 10 or more years doubled the risk of developing brain gliomas, a type of tumor.

The 737 minutes that we talk on cellphones monthly, on average, according to the C.T.I.A., makes today's typical user indistinguishable from the heavy user of 10 years ago.

Ms. Davis recommends keeping a phone out of close proximity to the head or body, by using wired headsets or the phone's speaker. Children should text rather than call, she said, and pregnant women should keep phones away from the abdomen.

The F.C.C. concurs about the best way to avoid exposure. It is not by choosing a phone with a marginally lower SAR, it says, but rather by holding the cellphone "away from the head or body."

It's advice that I find hard to put into practice myself. The comforting sight of everyone around me with phones pressed against their ears, just like me, makes the risk seem abstract.

But Ms. Davis, citing unsettling findings from research in Israel, France, Sweden and Finland, said, "I do think I'm looking at an epidemic in slow motion."

Dear HESA Committee Members,

Following is an admission by a major telecommunication company that radiation from wireless technology causes severe harm to human beings.

Why does it admit it?

Because it wants to patent a device which would reduce it.

Can the company be believed?

Standards and Poors, April 2010 rates the comapany "as the leading integrated provider of telecommunications services in Switzerland."

What are the major admissions?

That standard wireless telecommunications equipment produces electromagnetic radiation which causes harm to human beings.

All the the information below is relevant. I will place in bold type those portions which I think most relevant. You can chose to read only the bold sections to get an understanding of the significance of this relevation, or read the entire sections to see the admissions in context.

The entire document can be found in an international patent application for a device which would "reduce electrosmog in wireless local networks," or WiFi, filed 2 September 2004 by Swiss-Com AG at the following link:

https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=sites&srcid=ZGVmYXVsdGRvbWFpbnxub2NlbGx0b3dlcmlub3VybmVpZ2hib3Job29kfGd4OjJlYmMyZWZkYzhlOWI5M2Y

Page 1 (page 2 of the application) sections 10-30, and page 2 sections 5-15:

"The influence of electrosmog on the human body is a known problem. The health risk from mobile radio transmitters," (base stations) "handys and DECT telephones has been an explosive subject among the general public at least since the enormous breakthrough in mobile radio technology in the 1990s. To meet the concerns of science from the legislative side, the permissible limit values have thus been lowered several times" (in Switzerland), "and technology has been increasingly focused on this problem. The risk of damage to health through electrosmog has also become better understood as a result of more recent and improved studies. When, for example, human blood cells are irradiated with electromagnetic fields, clear damage to hereditary material has been demonstrated and there have been indications of an increased cancer risk (Mashevich M., Folkman D. , Kesar A., Barbul A. , Korenstein R. , Jerby E. , Avivi L., Department of Human Genetics and Molecular Medicine, Tel-Aviv University, Tel-Aviv, Israel,"Exposure of human peripheral blood lymphocytes to electromagnetic fields associated with cellular phones leads to chromosomal instability,"Bioelectromagnetics, 2003 Feb. , 24 (2): 82-90). In this study, for example, human peripheral lymphocytes were exposed to continuous electromagnetic fields of 830 MHz in order to examine whether this leads to losses or gains in chromosomes (aneuploidy). Bigger changes lead to instability of the genome (= the totality of all genes of a germinal cell) and thereby to cancer. The human peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) were irradiated at different average specific absorption rates (SAR) of 1.6 to 8.8 W/kg over a time period of 72 hours in an exposure system based on a parallel plate resonator in a temperature range of 34.5 to 37.5 °C. The average absorption rate (SAR) and its distribution in the exposed tissue culture flask were determined by combining the measurement results with a numerical analysis based on a finite element simulation code. A linear increase in the chromosome No. 17--an aneuploidy (=numerical chromosome aberration) --was observed as a function of the SAR, demonstrating that this radiation has a genotoxic effect. The SAR-dependent aneuploidy was accompanied by an abnormal mode of replication of the chromosome 17 region engaged in segregation (repetitive DNA arrays associated with the centromere), suggesting that epigenetic alterations are involved in the SAR dependent genetic toxicity. Control experiments (i. e. without any radio frequency radiation) carried out in the temperature range of 34.5 to 38.5 °C showed that elevated temperature is not associated with either the genetic or epigenetic alterations observed following RF radiation, these alterations being the increased levels of aneuploidy and the modification in replication of the centromeric DNA arrays. These findings indicate that the genotoxic effect of electromagnetic radiation is elicited via a non-thermal pathway. Moreover aneuploidy is to be considered as a known phenomenon in the increase of cancer risk."

Please note, the permissible limits in Canada have not been lowered several times, as they have been in Switzerland. Also, as confirmed by ICNIRP and WHO, the agencies setting guidelines Health Canada adopts, their/our guidelines apply to thermal radiation only, and are not applicable in any regard to non-thermal levels.

"Thus it has been possible to show that mobile radio radiation can cause damage to genetic material, in particular in human white blood cells, whereby both the DNA itself is damaged and the number of chromosomes changed. This mutation can consequently lead to increased cancer risk. In particular, it could also be shown that this destruction is not dependent upon temperature increases, i. e. is non-thermal. Based on the scientific studies in the field, and owing to increasing pressure from the public, especially in the industrialized countries, epidemiological studies have been systematized by the World Health Organization (WHO) in the last few years, such as e.g. the currently running WHO Interphone Project, in order to be able to assess more precisely the health risks from electrosmog and work out corresponding guidelines."

It has been determined that the WHO Interphone Project provided inadequate evidence, based on what many believe to be a poorly designed study, to warrant a revision in WHO or Health Canada's guidelines.

Page 5, section 25:

"Despite increasingly strict national" (Swiss) "guidelines with respect to legally specified limits, the impact of electrosmog in WLANs on the human body can be considerable. Moreover it is to be expected that this impact will continue to increase in the future for many people. Two factors in particular are playing a role in this: First, more and more applications require additional, usually higher- energy frequency bands in order to be able to meet the growing need with respect to transmission rate. Second, the need for WLAN expansion in the private sphere as well as in the public sphere, e. g. in airports, railway stations, trains, restaurants, exhibition halls, etc. , has by far not yet reached its peak."

Page 6, sections 5-15:

"With the state of the art as a basis, there has been a lot of effort put into providing evidence for the detrimental effects of electrosmog and setting corresponding limits. Limits and guidelines alone will not suffice, however, to further contain the electrosmog in WLANs since the development in WLANs runs in exactly the opposite direction, as mentioned above. WLANs even represent zones in which people usually spend longer periods of time (place of work, Internet, network games, etc. ) and are therefore to be considered as particularly problematic with respect to radiation impact. WLANs in the state of the art moreover send base stations, such as access points, so-called beacon signals periodically so that mobile units can recognize the network and authenticate themselves with an access point. These beacon signals comprise recognition signals, such as e. g. SSIDs and/or other radio frequency signals with control parameters. Even if no mobile units are located in the WLAN, the beacon signals continue to be transmitted periodically to the APs. This means that even when the WLAN is not being used at all, an underlying stress from electromagnetic radiation remains for persons in the Basic Service Area of an access point of the WLAN. For example, in the case of WLANs at places of employment, such as offices, etc. , there exists therefore permanent stress from electrosmog from the WLAN on the employees of the company or organization."

If a major telecommunications company acknowledges science and admits its products are dangerous, why can't Health Canada? This application was made more than 6 years ago, at which time convincing evidence of harm was available, yet Canadians still have the same inadequate thermal guideline. It is urgent that Safety Code 6 be withdrawn as Canada's standard for all current and future wireless communication devices and transmitters. It is vital that a new guideline based on biological effects be developed by independent scientists, credible to all concerned and not associated with the industry.

In addition, regulations must be written requiring that all wireless devices, from radio transmitters to ipods, be proven to be safe before the public is exposed to them. As Swiss-com points out, technological conveniences are proliferating and, most likely, will continue to expand in usage and popularity but limits and guidelines will not contain the electrosmog-health issue. This requires that new technology be developed that will be safe. Always when regulations require new, safer means of providing a product, the industry responds. Innovation will provide the answer when laws require safer wireless technology. But until the law so requires, industry will continue to operate as cheaply as possible. Already patents are held by cellphone companies for safer phones but they are not yet in use because they would require investment in infrastructure.

Telecommunication companies must be forced to sell safe products through legislation, not by self-monitoring as is allowed today.
