State Rep. Andrea Boland introduced the Children's Wireless Protection Act last winter, which would have placed warning labels on cell phones. Experts from around the world testified in favor of Boland's bill, including Dr. Devra Davis, the author of "Disconnect: The Truth About Cell Phone Radiation, What the Industry Has Done To Hide It, and How to Protect Your Family." Scientists, doctors, and nurses were all supporters for the bill.
On June 15, San Francisco passed a right-to-know ordinance, making it the first city in the nation to require cell phone radiation disclosure at the point of sale. On June 30, Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich announced his intent to introduce a bill requiring warning labels on cell phones.
After being diagnosed with a brain tumor, I learned that cell phone manuals come with warnings that are being buried in fine print, which nobody reads. I sure didn't. I was shocked to learn that the manual of the BlackBerry Torch warns "Keep the BlackBerry device at least 0.98 inches from your body, including the abdomen of pregnant women and the lower abdomen of teenagers."

The abundance of four common species of bumblebees in the US has dropped by 96% in just the past few decades, according to the most comprehensive national census of the insects. Scientists said the alarming decline, which could have devastating implications for the pollination of both wild and farmed plants, was likely to be a result of disease and inbreeding.
Bumble bees are important pollinators of wild plants and agricultural crops around the world including tomatoes and berries thanks to their large body size, long tongues, and high-frequency buzzing, which helps release pollen from flowers.
Bees in general pollinate some 90% of the world's commercial plants, including most fruits, vegetables and nuts. Coffee, soya beans and cotton are all dependent on pollination by bees to increase yields. It is the start of a food chain that also sustains wild birds and animals.
But the insects, along with other crucial pollinators such as moths and hoverflies, have been in serious decline around the world since the last few decades of the 20th century. It is unclear why, but scientists think it is from a combination of new diseases, changing habitats around cities, and increasing use of pesticides.
Sydney Cameron, an entomologist at the University of Illinois, led a team on a three-year study of the changing distribution, genetic diversity and pathogens in eight species of bumblebees in the US.
By comparing his results with those in museum records of bee populations, he showed that the relative abundance of four of the sampled species (Bombus occidentalis, B pensylvanicus, B affinis and B terricola) had declined by up to 96% and that their geographic ranges had contracted by 23% to 87%, some within just the past two decades.
Cameron's findings reflect similar studies across the world. According to the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology in the UK, three of the 25 British species of bumblebees are already extinct and half of the remainder have shown serious declines, often up to 70%, since around the 1970s. Last year, scientists inaugurated a £10m programme, called the Insect Pollinators Initiative, to look at the reasons behind the devastation in the insect population.
Cameron's team also showed that declining species of bees had higher infection levels of a pathogen called Nosema bombi and lower genetic diversity compared with the four species of bees that were not in decline – B bifarius, B vosnesenskii, B impatiens and B bimaculatus.
The N bombi pathogen is commonly found in bumblebees throughout Europe but until now has been largely unstudied in north America. The infection reduces the lifespans of individual bees and also results in smaller colony sizes.
The reduction in genetic diversity seen in the declining bees means that they are less able to fight off any new pathogens or resist pollution or predators. "Higher pathogen prevalence and reduced genetic diversity are, thus, realistic predictors of these alarming patterns of decline in north America, although cause and effect remain uncertain," Cameron wrote today in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Insects such as bees, moths and hoverflies pollinate around a third of the agricultural crops grown worldwide. If all of the UK's insect pollinators were wiped out, the drop in crop production would cost the UK economy up to £440m a year, equivalent to around 13% of the UK's income from farming.
The collapse in the global bee population is a major threat to crops.
It is estimated that a third of everything we eat depends upon pollination by bees, which means they contribute some £26bn to the global economy. Other identified causes of bee decline include parasites such as the bloodsucking varroa mite and viral and bacterial infections, pesticides and poor nutrition stemming from intensive farming methods.
"Pollinator decline has become a worldwide issue, raising increasing concerns over impacts on global food production, stability of pollination services, and disruption of plant-pollinator networks," wrote Cameron. "In accordance with the goals of the United Nations convention on biological diversity to reduce the rate of species loss by 2010, such efforts to elucidate the causes and ecological impacts of bumble bee decline, in co-ordination with informed conservation strategies, will go a long way to mitigating further losses."

At this meeting, concerned parents learned that the claims made for the safety of wireless Internet technology are unproven. We learned that children with electromagnet hypersensitivity are getting sick in WiFi equipped schools, that prolonged radio frequency exposure is potentially injurious to human growth in the early years of development and of a fetus in utero, and we learned that the electromagnet field (EMF) surrounding each student working at banks of wireless computers exceeds what is currently deemed to be safe and poses a serious health risk.
I am certain that the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board wants only the most progressive and safest environment for our students. They would not want to implement any technology that would in any way risk student health. At present there is not conclusive medical proof that putting children in an environment of industrial strength EMFs for six to eight hours a day is harmful. There is no proof that it is not. We won't know this for at least 10 or more years. We do have evidence that it is harmful. Sensitive children, who during the school year develop unexplained headaches, increased heart rate, fatigue, and dizziness suddenly improve when removed from a WiFi school.
There is no doubt the school board is under pressure to adopt wireless technology. The board doesn't want to be left standing at the station as the high tech train streaks by. The high tech lobby is one of the most powerful lobby groups in industry today. Kids are a huge market with the possibility of a laptop in every backpack, an ear-bud in every ear. Why do we have to buy into this powerful marketing scheme? First they will sell us routers (transmitters), then the supporting software and maintenance. We already have high-speed fibre optic cable in our schools. As it is, kids can get on the Internet as much as they want. The World Wide Web is essential for learning and communication; the important point is that schools should be islands of safety from the WiFi electromagnetic radiation that is virtually everywhere
Why is it that Switzerland, France and Germany are advising against WiFi or actively removing wireless technology from their schools? We have to find out why. We need a moratorium on the installation of WiFi until we have all the answers.
If in the next decade, the research shows it is harmful, then KPRDSB's decision to not install WiFi will confirm the strong leadership role our school board has taken in resisting this powerful, persuasive lobby group. We will have protected our young children. Being left standing at the station as the WiFi train streaks by may just be the wisest (and safest) place to be.

I write to express my opposition to the proposed cell tower base station at S-09-024 - Condon Property on Old Liberty Road
I am a health advocate and work on the issue of non ionizing radiation exposure in the radio frequency (RFR) band. I have a personal stake in this work, as I am one of the growing numbers of people who have become functionally impaired due to prolonged chronic exposure to RFR from a base station near to my home. I am aware that the Telecommunications Act of 1996 (TCA) prohibits the consideration of environmental concerns in the siting of base stations, if, the RFR emissions are under the FCC Safety Standard. However, the TCA does not prohibit the consideration of a loss of property value, and, as many people perceive that there is a loss of property value due to the negative health impact from the exposure to the RFR from cell towers it is incumbent upon the Commissioners to be informed of these impacts.
Additionally, while there is cell phone coverage in this area, T-Mobile claims this tower is necessary to provide cell phone coverage along MD Route 26 and to the interior of people's homes. Neither of these is true.
It is important to point out that the use of cell phones while driving is considered distracted driving and studies show that it is as bad as drunk driving. The Department of Transportation (DOT) says, we heard America's call to end the dangerous practice of distracted driving on our nation's roadways. Distracted driving is a serious, life-threatening practice and we will not rest until we stop it …The message is simple – Put it down! . (http://www.distraction.gov/ )
In Maryland, there is a handheld ban for all drivers; a ban on all cell phone use (handheld and hands-free) for novice drivers; and, a ban on texting for all drivers.
No Telecom company should be promoting cell phone coverage for drivers as this encourages unsafe driving practices.
Winfield has an estimated 348 residents. Of these, close to 250 have signed a petition against the cell tower. If the remainder of the people must have better coverage in their homes they can purchase their own femtocell. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Femtocell) This would be the far better option rather than unnecessarily exposing all Winfield residents to the RF radiation emitted by the transmitters on cell towers.
The proposed 120 foot tower would be in close proximity to South Carroll High and Winfield Elementary schools. Children are more susceptible to environmental toxins, absorb more RFR into their bodies and face longer cumulative exposure than adults. This greater danger is being taken seriously by many scientific and governmental agencies.
In April 2009, the EU Parliament adopted a resolution on health concerns associated with RFR, which includes criteria for setting up Cell Towers. They state: "In this context, it is important to ensure at least that schools, nursery schools, retirement homes, and health care institutions are kept clear, within a specific distance determined by scientific criteria, of facilities of this type." In January 2008, the National Research Council, an arm of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering, issued a report saying that we do not know enough about the potential health risks of long-term exposure to RF radiation from cell phones, cell towers, television towers, and other components of our communications system. The scientists emphasized, in particular, the unknown risks to the health of children, pregnant women, and fetuses as well as of workers whose jobs entail high exposure to RF radiation. The report states:
"Wireless networks are being built very rapidly, and many more base station antennas are being installed. A crucial research need is to characterize radiated electromagnetic fields for typical multiple-element base station antennas and for the highest radiated power conditions with measurements conducted during peak hours of the day at locations close to the antennas as well as at ground level."(http://www.nap.edu/catalog/12036.html )
Jason Campbell, senior development manager for T-Mobile, USA, reports that the RF radiation levels from this cell tower will be 100 times lower than the FCC standards. This means the estimated RFR level will be 10 microwatts per centimeter squared (µW/cm2). This is the maximum allowable RFR exposure level in Russia, China, Switzerland, Italy and Monaco. The level claimed by Campbell may not take into account additional transmitters, which will further increase the RFR levels. In addition the reflective and amplifying nature of RFR in the environment may lead to localized RFR hot spots that exceed the estimated levels.
The wide variance in RFR exposure limits around the world is due to the fact that some countries, such as the United States, dismiss non-thermal biological effects from RFR exposure. The limits only protect against thermal heating. Many countries have lower limits that factor in the non-thermal cumulative effects, which have been shown to occur at levels thousands of times lower than the thermal effects.
According to Norbert Hankin, an environmental scientist in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Radiation and Indoor Air, who has studied the effects of RFR for 33 years, the FCC's standards are "thermally based, and do not apply to chronic, non-thermal exposure situations…Therefore, the generalization by many that the guidelines protect human beings from harm by any or all mechanisms is not justified."http://americanassociationforcellphonesafety.org/uploads/noi_epa_response.pdf
The BioInitiative Report, published in 2007, provides detailed scientific information on health impacts when people are exposed to EMF/RFR hundreds or even thousands of times below the limits currently established by the FCC. The authors reviewed more than 2000 scientific studies and reviews, and concluded that the existing public safety limits are inadequate to protect public health. Their conclusion is that: From a public health policy standpoint, new public safety limits, and limits on further deployment of risky technologies are warranted based on the total weight of evidence. Their recommendation is to set an exposure standard of 0.1 microwatt per centimeter squared (µW/cm2) limit. This is 10,000 times lower than the FCC standard of 1,000 µW/cm2 and 100 times lower than T-Mobile's estimation of the RFR levels from the proposed cell tower. (http://www.bioinitiative.org/ )
The non-thermal biological effects of RFR have been documented by the international scientific community and the military since the 1950s. As Dr. David Carpenter, Director of the Institute for Health and the Environment at the University at Albany, State University of New York, lead author of the BioInitiative Report, Advisor to the President's Cancer Panel and the Executive Secretary of the New York Power Lines Project, coveys quite well in his report Setting Prudent Public Health Policy for Electromagnetic Field Exposures: "Clear evidence has emerged from animal and cell culture studies that [RFR] has biological effects. Furthermore, such effects occur at intensities commonly experienced by humans. We know a number of ways in which EMF's alter cell physiology and function. Electromagnetic fields affect gene transcription, induce the synthesis of stress proteins, and cause breakage of DNA, probably through the generation of reactive oxygen species. Changes in the blood-brain-barrier and in calcium metabolism have been demonstrated for various RF frequencies.and such effects occur at exposures that do not cause significant heating. Any one of these actions might be responsible for the carcinogenic and/or neuro-degenerative actions of EMF's[RFR]." In addition, 10 out of the 14 peer-reviewed epidemiological studies analyzed, and conforming to the specified WHO/ICNIRP standards of scientific quality, including their assessment criteria of consistency and replication found significant increases in ill health effects. Included in this database are only those studies that are about cell tower exposures. (Kundi, 2008 at the London EMF International Conference). Populations close to cellular antennas show an increase in the effects of ill health in those closest to the antennas with the risks factors dropping off as distance and RFR levels decrease. Symptoms ranged from sleep disturbances to breast and brain cancers. As public officials you have a legal and moral duty to educate yourselves on this matter and to base your decisions on all of the information regarding negative health impacts from exposure to the radio frequency radiation from wireless communication transmitters and their subsequent negative impact on property values. As the subject of your story, I'd like to tell your readers why I spoke out about my electrical hypersensitivity and subjected myself to potential ridicule.
Judging by the responses I've had – phone calls, people recognizing me from your article and stopping to chat – there are many more people in my EHS boat.
Radio frequencies from Wi-Fi, cellphones, DECT cordless phones and satellite antennas hit me hardest and fastest, but dirty electricity from electronics and fluorescent lights and electromagnetic radiation from baseboard heaters, computer monitors, electric stove elements compound the problem. My vision blurs to double or triple, and if exposure continues, my eyes feel dry and tired, I develop insomnia and chronic fatigue with fibromyalgia, mood swings, memory loss and brain fog.
I know what caused my symptoms: I have mercury poisoning from 40 years of low-level exposure to dental amalgams, and a 1997 acute industrial strength exposure from a professional pesticide application – mercuric chloride.
Because there were no regulations forcing the exterminator to disclose what he'd used, my doctors had no clue. At 46, I was regularly expelled from medical practices because no antidepressant, anti-inflammatory or analgesic worked.
I'd been locked into a hell that few people escape sane or alive. Thanks to Dr. Cline, I'm still here to talk about it.
My high body burden of mercury has turned me into an antenna. Radio frequencies mobilize mercury causing symptoms of acute mercury poisoning.
To avoid exposure, I could probably move to a cave in outer Mongolia.
Ultimately, I must detoxify my body.
Detoxification requires chelation. Chelation is the only recognized treatment for heavy metal poisoning, and if I had been poisoned in an industrial setting, MSP would have paid for my in-hospital treatment and I'd have WCB for life.
Neither MSP nor private health insurance will pay for chelation because I wasn't diagnosed correctly and immediately. I've looked into suing the exterminator, but there were no regulations, hence no records. Medical records have been shredded.
My MPs, MLAs and several lawyers' best advice was, "Write a book."
I've made it my mission to educate people. We are unknowing and unwilling guinea pigs in a massive experiment: how much pollution can our bodies take before we collapse in chronic disease?
We can't fight it if we don't know about it, and we can't cure ourselves if our doctors don't support us – and they don't.
One neurologist told me that privately he agreed with me, but if he agreed publicly, he'd lose his medical licence for thinking outside the BCMA-endorsed box. Think of the Alberta doctors who've lost their licences for whistle-blowing and you'll realize he's right.
That leaves us – patients, clients, guinea pigs – to educate ourselves. I urge everyone to do that, immediately. Your very lives depend upon it.

Dear Mr. Zehr,
Thank you for your letter dated November 15th, 2010 stating that Festival Hydro is nearing the completion of the mandated deployment of smart meters and that the company intends to comply with the regulations by completing 100% of the installations. I am very concerned about a smart meter being installed on my house because it could seriously harm my health and threaten my life. At present, I avoid electro magnetic radiation whenever possible. I have been diligent to ensure that there is no wireless equipment that emits microwave radiation in my house or on my property, and I insist that you do not install this type of device on my electrical system.
For most of the last two years, I have been able to enjoy walking around Stratford. The entire environment changed for the worse, however, when the smart meters were installed. Smart meters emit strong bursts of microwave radiation, and I can often feel the effects of them when I am just walking down the street. It is like a push against my chest, which partially winds me. Instead of feeling invigorated after a walk, I now often feel soreness in my chest and slight nausea.
In the last few months, since smart meters and Wi Fi were installed in the area around my home, I have already noticed a decline in my overall health. In general, I have had difficulties sleeping, tinnitus has become much worse, and I have developed a heart problem that could be life threatening. There are strong reasons to believe that strong bursts of microwave radiation from smart meters may be the cause of these problems. I have also noticed that I am experiencing headaches more frequently and my breathing sometimes becomes more difficult when I am exposed to strong microwave radiation. My sensitivity to electro magnetic radiation has also become noticeably worse. By complete contrast, I am fit, energetic, and relatively healthy for my age when I am not exposed to microwave radiation.

Festival Hydro smart meters emit the same type of microwave radiation as the cordless telephones, but in very strong bursts. Because of those intense spikes, smart meters are even more likely to affect the heart.
At present, my home is somewhat shielded from direct radiation from smart meters as the meters on the houses on either side of mine are on the walls farthest from my house. I still feel the effects of radiation from meters on the houses across the road, however, and from others in the vicinity. If I sit on my front porch, I can clearly measure sharp bursts of radiation being emitted by the meters in my neighbourhood. The additional radiation of my property causes fatigue and spoils the use and enjoyment of my home.
If you install a smart meter on my home, I will be exposed to radiation that is far more powerful and more dangerous than that to which I am currently exposed. I will probably be highly exposed in my garage and on the west side of my property. There is also a strong possibility, based on the testing that I have done on other homes with smart meter problems, that the microwave radiation will penetrate the walls and may send spikes on the electrical system throughout my home, causing further serious health problems for me.
If Festival Hydro or the Ontario Government insists on installing a dangerous device that is likely to cause serious harm to me, I will be forced to protect my health and my home, just as every Canadian citizen has a right to do. I have already been driven from my previous home, where I suffered serious illness and cancer due to exposure to dangerous amounts of electro magnetic pollution. My wife and I lived in temporary accommodation for several years, at much expense, to protect my health. As a consequence of this experience, I have spent the last seven years learning about the dangers of electro magnetic radiation and have collected significant evidence about the harm that microwave radiation can cause to people, animals, birds, and the environment.
When I came to Stratford, I chose a site for our home that is as far as possible from cell phone antennas so that I could avoid most radiation. During the building process, we incurred extra expenses by insisting on materials that would provide extra protection. We also insisted on better quality wiring for our home, and we added special switches to keep internal electro magnetic fields at the lowest level. As stated previously, there are no wireless devices in this home. It is a very "EMF" safe home, and I have taken all reasonable precautions that will allow me to live as safely as possible, without further harm.
My review of the Canadian Criminal Code indicates that subjecting a person to microwave radiation that causes actual harm can be interpreted as unwanted force, and that the offence of Assault Causing Bodily Harm would apply to any person involved in a situation that causes me harm. You are already aware that I suffer from electro hyper-sensitivity because I have advised you of this fact in previous correspondence. I have also shown Festival Hydro Manager, Mr. Ken Levy, a medical report that indicates that I have recently started having heart problems. If microwave radiation from the smart meters installed by Festival Hydro were to cause my death, it could be considered a homicide and anyone involved in the situation, including you, may face serious criminal charges.
You have previously been made aware of how dangerous the smart meter program is from the documents that I provided to both Festival Hydro and Stratford City Council. After being notified about the dangers, I assume that you reviewed the information and also conducted your own research into the heath effects of microwave radiation.
A question that you must ask is what sort of repercussion you may suffer from the Ontario Government if you do not install a smart meter on my home. I doubt if there would be any repercussion, and, even if there were, you could easily defend your position with the evidence that I have already provided to you showing harm to human health caused by microwave radiation. On the other hand, if Festival Hydro installs a smart meter on my home and it further adversely affects my health, you may face serious criminal charges, civil litigation, and civil rights complaints. Under these circumstances, Festival Hydro would be grossly irresponsible to install a smart meter on my home.
When I first warned you about the potential harm and adverse health effects of smart meters, I had limited knowledge of how they operate, how strong the radiation would be, and how often the meters would send bursts of microwave radiation. Since then, I have seen several smart meters and measured their radiation, and I have learned much more about them. I have collected a significant amount of scientific research and evidence to show how dangerous these meters are. They are far worse and more dangerous than I ever could have anticipated.
I ask that you review all of the information listed below and attached to this message. In addition, please provide the information to the Festival Hydro Board of Directors.
I also request that you inquire of Premier McGuinty and the Ontario Government regarding the spirit and purpose of the smart meter legislation, and whether it was their intention to harm the health and endanger the lives of Ontario citizens. In so doing, please provide the Premier with all of the same evidence that I have provided to you. Finally, I request that you inquire whether the government would exempt me and other citizens who are made ill by microwave radiation from having smart meters on their property.
