PSUSD Discusses Cell Phone Tower Cancer Risks

Parents and teachers with the Palm Springs Unified School District were up in arms Tuesday over cell phone towers near their schools.

More than a dozen teachers at Vista Del Monte Elementary School have developed cancer.

A tower was contructed there in 2004.

US Wireless Expansionism Accelerating

Excerpt from the 2011 State of the Union address

(Full text at http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2011/01/25/remarks-president-state-union-address )

Within the next five years, we'll make it possible for businesses to deploy the next generation of high-speed wireless coverage to 98 percent of all Americans.  This isn't just about -- (applause) -- this isn't about faster Internet or fewer dropped calls.  It's about connecting every part of America to the digital age.  It's about a rural community in Iowa or Alabama where farmers and small business owners will be able to sell their products all over the world.  It's about a firefighter who can download the design of a burning building onto a handheld device; a student who can take classes with a digital textbook; or a patient who can have face-to-face video chats with her doctor.

All these investments -– in innovation, education, and infrastructure –- will make America a better place to do business and create jobs.  But to help our companies compete, we also have to knock down barriers that stand in the way of their success.

Switzerland's Advice about Cell Phone Use

January 27, 2011.  What does Switzerland's Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH)  have to say about mobile phone use?

Their advice is:

1. NEVER use a phone while you are a driving a vehicle, not even with a hands-free kit!

2. Use a wireless hands-free system (headphone, headset) with a low power Bluetooth emitter to reduce radiation to the head.

3. When buying a mobile phone, make sure it has a low SAR.

4. Either keep your calls short or send a text message (SMS) instead. This advice applies especially to children and adolescents.

5. Whenever possible, only use your phone when the signal quality is good.

6. Be wary of radiation shields and other such protective devices that are claimed to limit exposure to radiation. They may reduce the connection quality and therefore force the phone to transmit at a higher output power.

7. People with active medical implants should keep their mobile phone at least 30 cm away from the implant at all times.

Supreme Court hands dairy farmers a win over stray voltage

Posted at 1:22 PM on January 26, 2011 by Bob Collins

http://minnesota.publicradio.org/collections/special/columns/news_cut/archive/2011/01/supreme_court_hands_dairy_farm.shtml

A divided Minnesota Supreme Court ruled today that two Wabasha County farmers can seek money from an electric utility, whose stray voltage, they say, has caused their cows to give out less milk (see opinion). The stray voltage is also believed to have killed 80 dairy cows.

In upholding a lower court's ruling, the Supreme Court said Greg and Harlan Siewert of Zumbro Falls are free to seek damages from Northern States Power Company, the parent of Xcel Energy. When the two moved to their new farm in 1989, they noticed the milk production decreased from their 150-200 cows. Experts said it was because electrical current returned to the ground through the cows.

"It's a slow, painful tortuous death, is what it is for them," Greg Siewert told the Star Tribune in 2008. "It's like watching someone die of AIDS."

The court rejected the utility's claim that any damages would impact electricity rates in violation of state law, especially if it had to redesign its electrical distribution system.

In her dissent, Chief Justice Lori Gildea wrote, "the judiciary is not in the position to order NSP to adopt one electrical distribution system over another without potentially undermining the nuanced balancing and determinations made by the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission..."

She acknowledged, however, that "NSP did not deliver electricity in the safest or most prudent way."

The effect of stray voltage on cows has been a controversy in Minnesota since farmers started raising the issue in the 1990s. About a half-dozen farmers have filed suit over the years against utility companies.
