Update on Port Franks, Ontario Cell Tower…and call to action

Last week Lambton Shores Council voted to ask MP Bev Shipley to put forward a cease and desist order for the cell tower planned at the Marina. Investigation into looking into a moratorium on any further towers in the Port was voted on as well. Both passed unanimously.

Yesterday a resident witnessed an excavator being dropped off at the planned tower site; flags were placed on the site as well last week.

We need everyone who can help to call MP Shipley to ask him to follow through on Council's request. There are no other white/beige (low radiation) zones in Canada for people who are ill to go to escape. This is an already protected area with regards to the environment; and because of the sand dunes and trees, Port Franks is already shielded from the cell towers on the land surrounding it. It's the perfect place for a ERA (electromagnetic reduced area).

A new report by the BioInitiative Working Group 2012 says that evidence for risks to health has substantially increased since 2007 from electromagnetic fields and wireless technologies (radiofrequency radiation). The Report reviews over 1800 new scientific studies.Cell phone users, parents-to-be, young children and pregnant women are at particular risk.

"There is a consistent pattern of increased risk for glioma (a malignant brain tumor) and acoustic neuroma with use of mobile and cordless phones" says Lennart Hardell, MD at Orebro University, Sweden. "Epidemiological evidence shows that radiofrequency should be classified as a human carcinogen. The existing FCC/IEE and ICNIRP public safety limits and reference levels are not adequate to protect public health."

A dozen new studies link cell phone radiation to sperm damage. Even a cell phone in the pocket or on a belt may harm sperm DNA, result in misshapen sperm, and impair fertility in men. Laptop computers with wireless internet connections can damage DNA in sperm.

Based on strong evidence for vulnerable biology in autism, EMF/RFR can plausibly increase autism risk and symptoms. "While we aggressively investigate the links between autism disorders and wireless technologies, we should minimize wireless and EMF exposures for people with autism disorders, children of all ages, people planning a baby, and during pregnancy," says Martha Herbert, MD, PhD.

Wireless devices such as phones and laptops used by pregnant women may alter brain development of the fetus. This has been linked in both animal and human studies to hyperactivity, learning and behavior problems.

According to David O. Carpenter, MD, and co-editor of the 2012 Report:

"There is now much more evidence of risks to health affecting billions of people world-wide. The status quo is not acceptable in light of the evidence for harm."

This study covers EMF from powerlines, electrical wiring, appliances and hand-held devices; and from wireless technologies (cell and cordless phones, cell towers, 'smart meters', WI-FI, wireless laptops, wireless routers, baby monitors, and other electronic devices). Health topics include damage to DNA and genes, effects on memory, learning, behavior, attention, sleep disruption, cancer and neurological diseases like Alzheimer's disease. New safety standards are urgently needed for protection against EMF and wireless exposures that now appear everywhere in daily life.

Dear Mr. Krieger,

What is happening in Naperville re: the arrest of homeowners for blocking smart meter installations is a disgraceful, unfortunate black eye on your administration. It will be used as a negative example in other states for exactly what not to do. In Connecticut, our public utility policy is an opt-in with customers, not a fee-dependent opt-out. We already have first generation AMR meters installed statewide but they transmit once a month when called upon to do so by a van cruising the neighborhood. There is a new proposal in CT to go statewide with AMI 'smart' meters now. It will be blocked.

Please see attached comments to the CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection by The Berkshire-Litchfield Environmental Council. (I've excerpted the section pertinent to smart grid/metering.) The comments are an in-depth look, with references, at problems with smart grid/metering that you will hopefully find useful. Many municipalities and states -- and some federal agencies -- are re-thinking the financial enticements of smart grid stimulus through the US Department of Energy. Far from being wild-eyed activists, those opposing this in Naperville are the ones bringing significant information to city council. They should be welcomed and listened to -- certainly not arrested. What could you possibly have been thinking?

Dear Iris,

I was dismayed to read your article, even more so when I saw the video footage of a mother being arrested for defending her basic human rights in an apparently free and democratic nation. Given situations like this are typically arrived at via a clear and traceable decision making processes, I wanted to pass on some learnings from our experience here in the UK which may help you gain clarity for where events may lead going forward if the current course of action is maintained.

In circumstances similar to those being created by the City of Naperville, individual representatives of companies or city authorities can be held responsible for their actions, whether they are backed by legislative process or not. If an individual (or group of individuals) knowingly deploys and forces others to have a device which has been identified as a threat to people's health, security and safety - and those threats materialise - then those individuals can be pursued under a Private Criminal Prosecution - individually, for "Vicarious Liability", as an "Accomplice", in Law, for "Assault", "Actual Bodily Harm" and/or "Grievous Bodily Harm". This would be on the grounds that it is individuals - or groups of individuals - that take decisions – and are therefore liable for those decisions. If anyone is harmed or suffers loss as a result of a Smart Meters, for example, then they will be within their rights to pursue Prosecution against the individuals who forced those meters upon them - individually.

Under these circumstances, "I was just following orders/protocol/doing my job" would not provide any individuals facing one or more Private Criminal Prosecutions with a line of defence. The Nuremberg Trials showed us this. Utility firms and City "decision makers" have the responsibility to provide utility services safely without causing harm. They cannot be given a lawful mandate by ANY authority to install harmful spyware into people's homes - if they decide to do so and believe they have protection through legislation, they can very much be held accountable, personally, for those actions should that legislation turn into a public health disaster (e.g. tobacco).

In the UK, if someone successfully pursues a Private Criminal Prosecution against another individual for Assault, Actual Bodily Harm and/or Grievous Bodily Harm, the penalties can be severe, including imprisonment, if found guilty. Second offences for Grievous Bodily Harm or similar carry mandatory life sentences here.

Quite presciently, the national Government here has taken the decision to not force people to have Smart Meters. This may be, in part, as a result of the EU reflecting on the findings of the Bioinitiative Reports which you refer to below. Despite this, the UK's official threshold for Non-Ionising Electromagnetic Radiation is still amongst the highest in the world (they were, in fact, voted "obsolete" and "out of date" by the EU in 2008). But as you know, however, the thresholds in the United States are even worse - much worse. It goes without saying that those chickens will surely come home to roost one day - and when they do, there's a good chance they will be infertile (sadly, one of the many observable bioeffects caused by sustained exposure to electromagnetic radiation is sperm having 3x less motility and vitality and dying 3x more quickly than unexposed sperm).

In respect of other observable biological effects and impacts from devices such as Smart Meters, it is also worth mentioning that electomagnetic radiation provokes major effects in the brain. The most important of these is the opening of the blood-brain barrier - this allows mercury, organochlorines and other pollutants to enter in the brain, where they can cause various neurodegenerative diseases. We know this because there are now techniques which have been developed which show the causal link between electromagnetic radiation exposure and biological & neurological effects.

Why is this important? Because it not only allows people who are suffering from any number of these bioeffects to identify the cause of what is ailing them, but also the source - i.e. the individual decision makers who may have had a hand in forcing them to have, for example, a Smart Meter.

In the words of Calvin Coolidge; "There is no right to strike against the public safety by anybody, anywhere, any time."

PG&E doesn't care, a kid's perspective on Smart Meters

Anna Maurer is ten years old. She lives in Sebastopol California. The City of Sebastopol has asked PG&E for a moratorium on Smart Meters twice. Recently PG&E began installing Smart Meters in Sebastopol near Anna's neighborhood and school, despite the city's request.

Smart Meters transmit radio waves, aka RF radiation, (thousands of pulses a day), which the IARC, an arm of the World Health Organization classifies as a 2b (possible) carcinogen, same as DDT and lead.

Anna and her mom have both suffered headaches when near Smart Meters. Many people have reported health complaints since Smart Meters have been installed, on their homes or in the neighborhoods. Sleep problems, headaches, ringing in the ears, heart problems and more are reported.

Anna's mom is Sandi Maurer (EMF Safety Network director) who has been working hard to stop Smart Meters. There is a pending proceeding at the CPUC that might allow communities like Sebastopol to be Smart Meter free, but PG&E doesn't care. They continue to deploy these toxic meters, because they can.

Anna wrote this speech and made this video because she does not want to have to move.
