Southwest Harbor, ME —
What happens to all of life when humans introduce a vast network of electromagnetic fields crisscrossing the world without regard for the consequences, without knowing, or questioning, potential for devastation? WiFi antennae on church steeples, cell towers on farm hills, wilderness outposts, and in most villages, erected one after another. Out-of-control electro-pollution.
The last 100 years has seen a proliferation of man-made electromagnetic fields (EMF/RF) never before known on Earth— power lines, radar, x-ray, hair dryers, microwave ovens, cordless phones. Previously, the Earth's natural magnetic fields, the sun's, and the electromagnetic fields of all living things functioned in balance.
Many would argue that the radiation from cell towers, cell phones, and WiFi are harmless because of their extremely low frequency (ELF). But experiments by Frank Brown of Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory demonstrate that living organisms are influenced by minute changes and cycles in the Earth's electromagnetic fields, changes of less than 0.1 gauss (a magnet holding a refrigerator door closed is 200 gauss). The importance of Brown's findings was ignored for 20 years.
Eventually, scientific research suggested that the increase in EMF/RF/ELF on the body correlate with increases in cancer, Chronic Fatigue, Alzheimer's, depression, suicide, short-term memory loss, headache, eye pain, hair loss, irritability, emotional instability, diminished intellectual capacity (the World Health Organization recognizes the Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity, EHS, diagnosis and the above symptoms). The science generated by the communications industry and the military, however, would have us believe there are no dangers.
Take the honeybee. These pollinators, crucial for continuation of our food supply, are suffering from Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) syndrome. According to the recent Maine Sierran more than 30 percent of honeybees have been wiped out since 2005. The unprecedented density of artificial magnetic fields has contributed to CCD in bees, according to Dr. Ulrich Warnke, who has researched the effects of man-made electrical fields on wildlife for more than 30 years. Dr. Warnke, of the University of Saarland in Germany, also believes man-made EMF density interferes with bird migration and bee navigation.
What about cell phones kept in pockets near reproductive organs? Research by Ashok Agarwal, Director of the Center for Reproductive medicine, while not conclusive, suggests that cell phones near gonads can decrease sperm quality. Studies by UK scientists have found that pregnant women exposed to radiation while using handsets increased likelihood of having children with behavioral problems. Three prominent neurosurgeons on Larry King Live, said they did not hold cell phones to their ears; among them, Dr. Keith Black, a surgeon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, recommended using an earpiece, to keep the antenna away from your brain.
Cancer clusters among people living near cell towers have been documented in UK, Canada, and USA. Further UK research shows that children and teenagers are five times more likely to get brain cancer; and in spite of an official report suggesting young people's use of cell phones should be minimized, the government has done little to discourage it.
In Maine a bill is in the works that would require cell phones sold in our state to carry warnings about health risks associated with cell phone use, including brain cancer.
Unfortunately, however, the Telecommunications Act of 1996 served to discourage private and university studies on the health hazards of cell and WiFi technology, so that the multi-billion dollar communications industry has become the only body researching itself. Then in 1999, the Wireless Communications and Public Safety Law allowed the communications industry to be free from liability, obviously inhibiting any grass roots or citizen protests.
And, of course, there is the military. Yes. Our government can easily convince the average person that unbridled military use of wireless communication and other radiation technologies are more important than the every-day health of the common citizen. And so our government, without knowing if it is safe, continues to mandate proliferation of wireless technologies, crisscrossing land and sea.
So here we are—most of our population walking around with cell phones in our ears, WiFi in public libraries, homes next to cell towers—totally unaware of the veiled threat. Dr. Robert O. Becker, M.D., Orthopedic Surgeon and pioneering researcher in the field of biological electricity and regeneration, twice nominated for the Nobel Prize, writes in his book Cross Currents: "On the one hand this knowledge offers great promise…on the other hand it signals a dire warning, much like Rachel Carson's Silent Spring…I believe we are facing another invisible crisis, one that will call for concerted action by an informed public."
In an interview with Linda Houlton Howe, Dr. Becker, said, "I have no doubt in my mind that, at the present time, the greatest polluting element in the earth's environment is the proliferation of electromagnetic fields."

ASUS scores yet again with lowest radiation motherboards
Our IT Correspondent | February 10, 2010
http://digihub.smh.com.au/node/1539
ASUS has yet again pushed the envelope of motherboard design with the launch of Protect 3.0 boasting the lowest electromagnetic emissions from a motherboard in the industry.
Equipped with intelligent anti-radiation shielding to help protect users, systems and the planet, the Xtreme Design based Protect 3.0 significantly eliminates harmful electromagnetic rays. While on average, users are exposed to about eight hours of electromagnetic radiation daily from computer usage, Protect 3.0 effectively reduces this radiation exposure by up to 50 per cent.
A low radiation circuit design reduces the radiation produced by electrical components by positioning oppositely-charged electrical flows across each other to cancel out the fields generated. Additionally, a radiation moat design effectively eliminates radiation leakage to surrounding components by confining it to small region around an active area.
An active anti-surge protection further helps enhance component and system longevity. Protect 3.0 detects under or overvoltage conditions in components and prevents electrical surges from spreading. Anti-Surge also immediately shuts off the electrical supply and prevents potential component damage whenever surges occur, especially during periods of unstable grid power delivery, thereby enhancing total system longevity.
To ensure a more environmentally sustainable operation, Protect 3.0 includes the ASUS Energy Processing Unit (EPU), an energy-saving chip that reduces system-wide power consumption by up to 80.23 per cent.
To further reduce energy consumption, EPU also automatically delivers appropriate power via intelligent acceleration and overclocking.
Lower power generation results in less carbon dioxide (CO2) being released into the atmosphere. A single EPU-enabled motherboard can save up to 33kw of electricity annually, reducing the release of CO2 into the atmosphere by 20.7kg, according to Carbon Monitoring for Action (CARMA), a website that estimates the carbon emissions of power plants and power companies around the world.
Today, one in every three computers houses an ASUS motherboard. In fact, 10 million EPU-enabled motherboards can help eliminate up to 207,430 tons of
CO2 - equivalent to Australia's annual carbon emissions.

McDonald's said in the U.S its breakfast Dollar Menu and portable Mac Snack Wrap were popular offerings and its free Wi-Fi — which the company introduced in January — was also a draw.
The Wi-Fi offering "sits hand in hand with the McCafe launch," said Hottovy. "They're trying to extend duration of consumers visits."

Are the Health Hazards of Cell Phones Being Covered Up?
by Terrence O'Brien — Feb 9th 2010 at 9:27AM

Grab your tinfoil hats everyone. We're going on a wild ride through the world of cell phone radiation, industry cover-ups, and government complicity.
If you've been following Switched, or tech news at all, you know that one of the most contentious debates right now is over wireless technology and its effects on the human body. Studies come out nearly every week, alternately declaring cell phone and Wi-Fi radiation safe and announcing its responsibility for countless health issues. GQ's Christopher Ketcham did some digging and turned out one of the most thought-provoking (if slightly alarmist) articles on the physiological effects of wireless radiation we've ever read.
According to Ketcham's article, the lack of a scientific consensus doesn't spring from the difficulty of observing subtle shifts in biochemistry, or from maintaining viable documentation of the long-term effects. Instead, Ketcham, and his sources, most notably neuroscientist Allan Frey, accuse both the communications industry and the Defense Department of actively covering up the truth, and exerting influence over government agencies and the scientific community here in the U.S.
While that might sound like the ramblings of a paranoid Fox Mulder type, it's not as insane as it seems. Private industry has a long and proud history of covering up its own health hazards, while convincing the government to turn a blind eye. The tobacco industry, asbestos manufacturers, and the makers of both DDT and Agent Orange long denied and actively hid overwhelming evidence that their products caused cancer and other health problems.
We're still maintaining a healthy dose of skepticism here at Switched. But, given the pace at which wireless technology has advanced in its capabilities and reach, one thing that Dr. Frey told Ketchman struck us as remarkable:
"It just so happens that the frequencies and modulations of our cell phones seem to be the frequencies that humans are particularly sensitive to. If we had looked into it a little more... we could have allocated spectrums that the body can't feel."
Or, in the words of our good friend Dr. Ian Malcolm, "[Our] scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should." [From: GQ]
