International Scientists Appeal to U.N. to Protect Humans and Wildlife from Electromagnetic Fields and Wireless Technology

WHO's conflicting stance on risk needs strengthening, says 190 scientists

New York, NY, May 11, 2015 (Business Wire) -- Today 190 scientists from 39 nations submitted an appeal to the United Nations, UN member states and the World Health Organization (WHO) requesting they adopt more protective exposure guidelines for electromagnetic fields (EMF) and wireless technology in the face of increasing evidence of risk. These exposures are a rapidly growing form of environmental pollution worldwide.

The "International EMF Scientist Appeal" asks the Secretary General and UN affiliated bodies to encourage precautionary measures, to limit EMF exposures, and to educate the public about health risks, particularly to children and pregnant women.

The Appeal highlights WHO's conflicting positions about EMF risk. WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer classified Radiofrequency radiation as a Group 2B "Possible Carcinogen" in 2011, and Extremely Low Frequency fields in 2001.  Nonetheless, WHO continues to ignore its own agency's recommendations and favors guidelines recommended by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). These guidelines, developed by a self-selected group of industry insiders, have long been criticized as non-protective.

The Appeal calls on the UN to strengthen its advisories on EMF risk for humans and to assess the potential impact on wildlife and other living organisms under the auspices of the UN Environmental Programme, in line with the science demonstrating risk, thereby resolving this inconsistency.

Martin Blank, PhD, of Columbia University, says, "International exposure guidelines for electromagnetic fields must be strengthened to reflect the reality of their impact on our bodies, especially on our DNA. The time to deal with the harmful biological and health effects is long overdue. We must reduce exposure by establishing more protective guidelines."

Joel Moskowitz, PhD, of University of California, Berkeley, says, "ICNIRP guidelines set exposure standards for high-intensity, short-term, tissue-heating thresholds. These do not protect us from the low-intensity, chronic exposures common today. Scientists signing the Appeal request that the UN and member nations protect the global human population and wildlife from EMF exposures."

Tinnitus mapped inside human brain

For the first time, brain signals relating to the constant ringing noise of tinnitus have been mapped across a wide area inside a patient's brain.

What Cell Phone and Tobacco Research Have in Common

The scientists' appeal asks for a precautionary approach to EMFs, citing studies that have already shown conclusive results that EMFs do have a biological effect.

They accuse the U.N. of double-speak—recognizing that EMFs are harmful to people, yet adhering to the standards set forth by what they call a "self-selected group of industry insiders," the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP).

Experts urge cautious use of wireless devices as health effects reassessed

"The general feeling that Health Canada seems to want to put out is that these are perfectly safe, there's no hazard," said Miller, who last month appeared before the Standing Committee on Health. "And yet if we're at the beginning of a period of increasing exposure of a new possibly – probably – carcinogen, it could be some years before we get a major impact seen in the population," he said in an interview. "But by then it will too late."

Cellphone safety: Where do you keep your phone?

An April 30th survey funded by the California Brain Tumor Association (CABTA) found that 70 percent of Berkeley adults did not know about the FCC's minimum separation distance. And 82 percent said they would like information about how far the phone should be kept from the user's body.

Different electromagnetic field waveforms have different effects on proliferation, differentiation and mineralization of osteoblasts in vitro.

These results indicated that while square EMFs promoted proliferation and had no effect on the differentiation of osteoblasts, sinusoidal EMFs inhibited proliferation but enhanced osteogenic differentiation. Triangular EMFs did not affect cell proliferation but induced the strongest osteogenic activity among the four waveforms of EMFs. Thus, the effects of EMFs on proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts in vitro were dependent on their waveforms.

When a local GP backed up Lewis's suspicions about Wi-Fi being the probable cause of Jessica's headaches, he went to some lengths to try to convince Spotbrough Copley Junior School in Doncaster to use wires instead of Wi-Fi, even offering to pay for the school building to be wired with cables.

In February, insurance market Lloyd's of London informed schools that it was excluding liability coverage for injuries "resulting from or contributed to by electromagnetic fields, electromagnetic radiation, electromagnetism, radio waves or noise", which means that school officials could be personally liable for exposing children and staff to microwave radiation.

Allergic to TV and mobile phones: Is 'electromagnetic hypersensitivity' real?

"There is no evidence that the radiation from electromagnetic sources such as mobile phones computers don't harm us. There are studies that have lacked to show an effect but that's not the same as proving safety."

Is cell phone radiation actually dangerous? We asked an expert

"I've been tracking the research for five years now and the evidence of the effect is growing stronger," Moskowitz told Digital Trends. "This is perhaps in part because the new studies are independent, not funded by the wireless industry."

Back in 2006, Henry Lai, a professor at the University of Washington analyzed all available studies on cell phone radiation from 1990 to 2006. He found that 50 percent of the 326 studies showed a biological effect from radio-frequency radiation, but when he divided them into independently funded studies and those funded by the wireless industry he found the split was 70 – 30.

A correction to this recent article -

A new article in the Canadian Medical Association Journal about Health Canada ignoring the latest science on wireless radiation
May 7, 2015

Please could you help me to correct the statement about me "who served as scientific secretary for the IARC panel".  That is not so.  I spent 3 months in IARC as a visiting senior scientist after the working group on RFF had made their recommendations on RFF being a category 2B carcinogen.  What I did was to review the epidemiology section of the working group's report and confirm that the citations of the literature were correct, and to suggest some minor editorial revisions to the text.

During that process I became very familiar with the literature and was convinced on its validity.  Later when I reviewed the subsequent epidemiology studies I decided that the categry now should be 2A.

I do not want to give our critics ammunition to state that I am claiming credit for things I did not do.  In Monograph 102 giving the full report you will find I am listed as providing post-meeting assistance

With best wishes
Anthony Miller

Maryland's Largest School District Agrees to Independent Wireless Radiation Measurements

MCPS maintained their stance that they are FCC compliant, meaning the radiation levels are below government exposure guidelines and thus the district does not need to take action. STFSM parents responded that these guidelines are over 18 years old. They presented the words of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Department of the Interior, the California Medical Association, and Yale and Harvard doctors who state that these outdated FCC guidelines "do not protect children".
