A separate investigation into the cause of the crash showed that the autopilot system malfunctioned at the same time that a passenger's cell phone on board the plane received an SMS message and another received a call.^{[citation needed]} After this information was made public, a number of countries that had previously been reluctant to do so outlawed cell phones on flights (including Switzerland).

The use of electromagnetic fields was also welcomed, cautiously, by Eleanor Barrie of Cancer Research UK: "This research shows how specific low frequencies of electromagnetic radiation can slow the growth of cancer cells in the lab.

Strange how The Guardian will publish a story about a possible helpful effect of EMFs 'still in its infancy and would require several years for further trials to take place', yet constantly ignore the masses of scientific information which shows that EMFs are causing widespread cancer and ill health today.

When will our Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness act?

To the editor,

It certainly is heartening to hear of advances in ways to cure cancer. But what about prevention? One report released this year (by Dode, A.C. et al, found at www.elsevier.com/locate.scitotenv) is the result of a 10-year study that shows the definite relationship between living close (500 metres) to a cellphone tower and increased levels of deaths from cancers (breast, lung, stomach, pancreas, etc.). Our new telecommunications technology is wonderful (and makes buckets of money for the companies) but in Nova Scotia there are no regulations in place with respect to distances from residences, schools, etc., and the closer one is to the source of this radiation the greater the risk.

Health is a provincial matter. When will our Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness act? The information on electromagnetic radiation causing health problems is readily available and the evidence has been steadily increasing over the last 15 or more years. Problems other than cancers include breaching of the blood – brain barrier, DNA damage, reproductive difficulties including miscarriages and more. There is lots of information available on such websites as: www.wirelessradiationsafety.ca www.wirelessradiationsafetycouncil.com www.citizensforsafetechnology.org www.centerforsaferwireless.org Or simply Google cellphone towers – health hazards. The excuse that we need more studies is a sick joke. How many more deaths do we need?

Protecting the health of citizens should be more important than protecting the health of big business.

Wi-Fi at a Portland Public School

In order to protect students against unnecessary microwave exposure, some parents and teachers have tried to prevent installation of Wi-Fi in their schools. Others have asked to have Wi-Fi replaced with wired internet access. Here is a situation where a father, on behalf of his child, has taken legal action regarding Wi-Fi at a Portland Public School, in Portland Oregon.

Shawn E. Abrell is the Lead Counsel and Tyl W. Bakker is the Local Counsel for Plantiffs.
