Electro-smog: what does science say in Italy
 

The June 14, 2011 A.M.I.C.A. (l'Associazione malattie da intossicazione cronica e/o ambientale – Chronic toxic and/or environmental diseases Association) gathering in Rome involved a most helpful exchange between experts: scientists, lawyers, volunteers, environmentalists and institutional representatives regarding radiofrequency and microwave health risks.  One of its main conclusions is that policy-makers face the radiofrequency/microwave issue "seriously and concretely". In the legal exchanges with experts it was demonstrated that the "standards" are inadequate and pose a kind of criminal code crisis, especially with regards to determining causality of damages, and the consequent judgement of guilt. For example: can certain events – including homicide – be connected to electromagnetic emissions. As has been indicated by medical experts, an "exact" correlation can never be verified. Therefore, the maximum grade of Italian justice does not require absolute certainty, but a known probability, along with the circumstances of a concrete case to demonstrate the event.

What is the relation between radiation and biological dysfunctions? What is the state of scientific research? Which are the legislative instruments? Such were the issues discussed at the June 14, 2011 A.M.I.C.A. (l'Associazione malattie da intossicazione cronica e/o ambientale – Chronic toxic and/or environmental diseases Association) Cellular, Wi-Fi and Wi-Max: a health hazard?"meeting in Rome.  The event was held at the Palazzo Marini in Rome, with presentations by scientists, lawyers, volunteers, environmentalists and academics, who assessed health risks associated with mobile devices and RF. The scientific and legal interventions led to two basic conclusions: there is a need to encourage independent studies, and, policy makers must address seriously and effectively the problem.

 

The first session gave an overview of the scientific evidence on the risk associated with exposure to electromagnetic fields of wireless communications, with presentation of experimental and epidemiological research carried out by Italian and international scientists.

 

Fiorenzo Marinelli, Institute of Molecular Genetics, National Research Council (Bologna), presented in vitro and environmental study results of interactions between Wi-Fi, radar and mobile phones with cellular vitality. Wireless networks experiments show that irradiation of the cellular system results in decrease in number of living cells and the increase of cancer cells within one hour of exposure. Documented RF and microwave biological effects indicate damage to DNA, chromosomes, free-radical production, neurotransmitter modification, premature aging, memory loss and the appearance of allergies. The epidemiological survey conducted in the town of Potenza Apicena (originated by the presence of a misunderstood epidemic that affected persons exposed to electromagnetic waves) has demonstrated, as Marinelli shows, that exposure to radar emissions de-vitalize cells after 24 to 48 hours. The researcher expressed the need to perform more detailed studies in order to observe the cause-effect relationship between exposure and diseases (breast cancer, thyroid disorders, autism, leukemia, etc.). According to Marinelli, SAR (Specific Absorption Rate), the measurement system used to calculate the percentage of electromagnetic energy absorbed by the body under conditions of exposure to radio frequency electromagnetic fields, is of "extreme approximation ".

 

Septimius Grimaldi, National Research Council (Rome), has undertaken to demonstrate and explain the theoretical and biological aspects of damage from exposure to electromagnetic fields. According to biophysics, the effects are biological as well as thermal; specifically the biological (non-thermal) effects become particularly relevant when they result in adverse consequences in the central nervous system, whose proteins, made faulty, become associated with such diseases as dementia and schizophrenia.

 

Dr. Valeria Pacifico, Dermopatico dell'Immacolata Institute (skin pathologies), has analyzed oxidative stress associated with non-ionizing radiation. Monitoring of 541 electrosensitive patients has shown that, so far, no useful markers have been identified to define diagnostics criteria that would have permitted the development of therapeutic protocols guidelines. Currently, it is hypothesized that proximity and use of computer screens, cell phones, cordless phones and other electromagnetic appliances can be a cause of observed chemical and metabolic disorders. Patients, therefore, have no other choice than to eliminate what they consider to be the triggering factor of their illness, with a clear reduction of the quality of their lives.

 

One of the most interesting and pressing appeals of the day came from Dr. Ernesto Burgio, President of the International Physicians for the Environment (ISDE), who expressed the need to develop biological, genetic and epigenetic models, rather than physical ones for the study of electrosensitivity. The linear model developed by physicists has no correlation with epidemiological studies. Thus, argues Dr. Burgio, the number of contaminated victims resulting from Hiroshima to Chernobyl would be critically reassessed, who have been calculated abstractly and in a misleading way. Speaking of the present study, it has been shown how detrimental effects of ionizing radiation do not become immediately evident in exposed individuals, but sometimes only in second and third generations. This is an indication of the need to change the lines of study from the physical to the epigenetic paradigm.  

 

Along this rationale, there is harsh criticism of the Interphone mega-study, which is considered by some Italian scientists to be misleading in its choice of risk factors, while there is appreciation, for the recent action by the [WHO's International Agency on Cancer Research] IARC, which classifies electromagnetic fields in category 2B: "possibly carcinogenic to people," with the wish expressed by the doctors present, that it be soon classified as group 2A.

 

A plausible link between electromagnetic radiation and genome modification has been investigated by Morando Soffritti, scientific director, Ramazzini Institute in Bologna, who presented initial results from a large experimental project involving over 18,000 mice that shows that exposure to low doses of gamma radiation results in a significant increase in the incidence of female breast cancer in mice. Soffritti, demands that occupational exposure limits to powerfrequency magnetic fields set by ICNIRP be reviewed.

 

The morning panel hosted as final presentation Professor Olle Johansson Experimental Dermatology Unit, Karolinksa Institute in Sweden, and member, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm), considered as one of the "champions" for electrical sensitivity. Johansson retraced the steps taken by doctors and politicians toward the adoption of the precautionary principle enshrined in the European Community that specifies the adoption guidelines to limit the use of cellular and cordless phones by children and vulnerable groups. Johansson disputes expert-selection criteria in high-level international bodies such as WHO, which, says the Swedish physician, often rely on consultants colluding with telecommunication companies.

 

The afternoon session hosted a debate between lawyers and representatives of electromagnetic-field-regulation bodies. The discussion depicts a disconcerting situation, which essentially, is a lack and inadequacy of standards as well as a crisis in criminal law in toto, which is grappling with the intricate problems in ascertaining causality of damage and, subsequently, with rulings.

 

Lombardi Lorenzo, head, Section of Electromagnetic Noise Pollution and Environment Ministry, explained Law 26 of 2001 for the Wireless technology installations emission standards. While providing for quality limits, it is an "incomplete" law, according to lawyer Matteo Ceruti that results in an "alarming" situation. In reality, this framework law cannot be applied administratively, due to the lack of implementing decrees. Not only is it unable to impose sanctions due to the absence of mandated authority, the law fails for four fundamental reasons: 1) absence of implementing decrees for most of its parts, 2) the issues that it relates to, 3) the weakening / reversal of principles, and 4) the application of generally inadequate case law.  In addition to all this, according to Ceruti, is a lack of scientific update that is envisaged by the law.

 

Citing the Radio Vatican case, Maria Cristina Tabano (with Codacons), followed by Nicola Bramante (criminal law) illustrated a fundamental point that relates to the causal link between damage and guilt. In view of the significant lack of scientific certainty in such matters, the two lawyers cited several Supreme Court rulings that to determine harm and culpability, statistical laws are sufficient, even with low average coefficients, provided that they are able to explain a specific event.

 

Such an interpretation concerns a relevant problem: it is possible to determine, beyond a reasonable doubt, that certain events – including homicide be associated with electromagnetic emissions? As has been indicated by medical experts, an "exact" correlation can never be verified. My name is Roger Carlstrom. I am 47 years old and am an external officer at the police in southern Sweden. I'll tell you about my experience with wireless networks.

In 2007, the police received a new controversial mobile radio communication system called Tetra. When it was introduced, despite opposition the health risks were not investigated properly, it had already existed for years in England. There, police officers received severe health problems, including sleep problems, skin rashes, cancer.

After only about a month's use of  Tetra , I had rashes on the face, which was diagnosed as the skin disease rosacea. I also had severe sleep problems. I could be awake for two days. Some weeks I only slept a total of ten hours, divided in small portions. When I had many days off or were on vacation, sleep came back pretty quickly and the rash disappeared almost completely. But when I started working again the old symptoms returned immediately.

My managers saw the connection between exposure to radio system and my rash, and they made sure that I had to start an office service without Tetra exposure. My rashes and sleep problems disappeared immediately.

But when I had a temporary  job at a police station in Malmo, the skin rash returned. Next to my work place was the county communications center, where all radio traffic to and from police cars headed. There were also a number of cordless DECT phones. I had to go back to my old service. The rash disappeared promptly.

But during the fall of 2011 the rash flared up again. I began to investigate what could be the cause. Adjacent to the police premises had a training activity, just started up in the former premises that stood empty. The training was conducted through computers with wireless networks. The radiation from a router reached slightly into my room. With a laptop, I measured the signal strength and I could move  into the room where the contact was lost. The problems disappeared immediately.

But then in December 2011, I became very ill and was hospitalized. A large tumor in my brain was taken away. I know that both the tumor as the skin rash was caused by radiation from Tetra and wireless networks. For those who are not aware of the technical details, I can tell you that the radiation from the police radio system, a wireless network or a cordless phone are similar and is equally dangerous. Therefore, my advice is not to install wireless networks, whether at home, in schools or at workplaces. Use fixed cable connected internet connections. You will have a more stable and faster connection.

To argue as the Swedish Radiation Protection authority that the levels are so low from the wireless network that they do not affect human health, is to ignore the facts. Already, both students and teachers experience severe symptoms at schools where education is carried out through wireless networks and computers / ipads with. In addition, the studies the authorities  refer to are only made to see immediate effects, not damage at the long term, or biological damage. The Council of Europe recommend in Resolution 1815 not to use wireless data networks in schools because of health risks.

"In the spring of 1993 at the height of public concern over cell phone–brain  tumor risks, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) biologists concluded that  the available data "strongly suggest" that microwaves can "accelerate the development  of cancer." This assessment is in an internal agency memo recently  obtained by Microwave News under the Freedom of Information Act."
 

"U.S. EPA  released a draft copy of its report on the evaluation of the potential carcinogenicity of electromagnetic fields. The report, first of all, finds that  In view of these laboratory studies, there is reason to believe  that the findings of carcinogenicity in humans are  biologically plausible.  Of course, they were referring to laboratory studies that they  had reviewed. This admission by the EPA means that the carcinogenic effects of electromagnetic energy are valid or likely....The EPA has concluded that the results of the occupational cancer studies are remarkably consistent .... [T]he consistency and  specificity of the findings provide evidence that EM- field exposure in the workplace may pose a carcinogenic risk for adults . . ." (see footnote 94).  Radiofrequency energy exposure has moved into the everyday environment for most people. What was true for the relatively few individuals in the past is now, by the EPA's own conclusions, the norm for the entire population.

In summary form, the EPA's report of five case control studies found that four of the jive noted significantly elevated risks of cancer in the following categories of employment; (1) gliomas and astrocytomas in Maryland electricians, telephone servicemen, linemen, railroad and telecommunication workers, engineers as well as electronic engineers; (2) primary brain cancer in workers of Philadelphia, northern New Jersey, and south Louisiana involved with design, manufacture, repair, or installation of electrical and electronic equipment; (3) brain cancer in East Texas male workers involved in highly exposed (EM fields) occupations in the transportation, communication, and the utilities industry; (4) brain cancer in workers identified in a 16-state NCHS survey of industries and occupations" (see footnote 94). One common thread that runs through these four case studies is brain cancer.

Realize now that the levels of electromagnetic energy to which those workers were typically exposed were much lower than the exposure to which a portable cellular telephone user is subjected with each telephone call. The EPA, in this report, concedes that "There is a link between exposure to EM fields and certain forms of site-specific cancer, namely leukemia, CNS, and lymphoma" (see footnote 94). Of course, in the instances when the exposure is directed at the head and brain of the human subject,  as it is with portable cellular telephone use, we should expect that the predominant form of cancer would be central nervous system (brain) cancer.

GAA Agreement with Shared Access

The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) has entered an agreement with Shared Access that

provides Clubs with the opportunity to potentially attain a floodlighting solution and to

generate an annual income.

Shared Access is a private Irish company with over €40M raised to invest in Irish telecoms

infrastructure. The company designs, builds and maintains structures for wireless

operators such as Vodafone, Meteor, O2 and 3 amongst others, to supply mobile

telephony and broadband coverage. In addition, Shared Access manages the

development and operation of telecoms infrastructure on the State's portfolio of land and

buildings (OPW) as well as other major developments.

Shared Access will provide a turnkey floodlighting solution, which meets agreed GAA

standards, should your location prove suitable for their clients. As well as creating a

valuable improvement for your Club's facilities, the development will also provide an

annual income with a share of the rental revenue given directly to the Club. In summary,

this is a way for your Club to benefit from a significant capital investment with the added

benefit of long term annual rental income.

If your club already has floodlights, Shared Access would still like the opportunity to

discuss the development options with you, which could include a capital contribution to the

Club, as well as a share in the annual rental revenue.

PARENTS DEMAND CHOICE & PRECAUTION
The BC Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils (BCCPAC) passed two strong resolutions concerning microwave wireless radiation technology in schools at their May 26th AGM, designed to protect children and support parental rights and choice.

Resolution 17 "calls on each Board of Education to have one public school at each education level (elementary, middle, secondary) that is free of Wi-Fi, cordless phones and cell phones. This school will only be equipped with wired computers and wired telephones for personal, educational and administrative purposes."

Resolution 18 calls on Boards of Education to "cease to install Wi-Fi and other wireless networks in schools where other networking technology is feasible." Both resolutions were passed with a clear majority (131-93; 130-77) and many attending members verbalized their support during the discussion period.

These resolutions referenced the WHO classification of Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields as a Type 2B Possible Human Cancer Risk in May 2011, and Health Canada's subsequent warning for reduced microwave radiofrequency radiation exposure for children because "children are typically more sensitive to a variety of environmental agents."

There are more calls for protection of children from around the world, including the American Academy of Environmental Medicine which states "Chronic exposure to wireless radiofrequency radiation is a preventable environmental hazard that is sufficiently well documented to warrant immediate preventative public health action.... Children are placed at particular risk for altered brain development, and impaired learning and behaviour."

It also noted that "some students in different school districts have reported adverse biological reactions such as headaches, dizziness, rapid heart rate, fatigue, and impaired concentration when exposed to radiofrequency emitted Wi-Fi and wireless devices in the school environment." This condition is known as Electrohypersensitivity (EHS) which is recognized by the Canadian Human Rights Commission. EHS students in BC, however, currently have no alternative to avoid such exposure while attending schools."

Peter Milne, owner of an IT consultant firm in Victoria, is convinced "innovative wired solutions can be achieved in a cost effective way. When parents demand safety first - the industry will respond with safer solutions."  Susan McFee from Langley pointed out that this is the first time in history a 2B carcinogen is being forced onto children. "Schools are taking the liability away from Wi-Fi manufacturers."

Michelle Wong of the Wi-Fi Subcommittee complained about Perry Kendall, Chief Medical Officer's advice to school boards. "He referenced radiation levels with a study sponsored by the Wi-Fi Alliance - companies that make and sell Wi-Fi products. They measured laptop radiation at distances of 1 meter and further from the laptop. That study does not assess near-field exposures to a user of the laptop itself." Using an audible microwave radiofrequency meter, Wong showed the attendees the strong and continual "near-field" microwave signals from an iPad. "It is comparable to cellphone (microwave radiation). We need to know what we are putting in the hands and laps of our children."

Ingrid Truow of Richmond District Parents' Association encouraged other parents "to consider the safety of these children who are affected by Wi-Fi as we do to the children who have peanut allergy." Gwen Giesbrecht, Chair of Vancouver's District Parent Advisory Council, felt strongly that "the present circumstances could really be detrimental to the next generation." since it's a health issue, she preferred to cease the installation of Wi-Fi in all schools rather than creating only one wired school in the district.

BCCPAC represents a membership of 821, including Parent Advisory Councils and District Parent Advisory Councils from every school district in the province. Collectively, BCCPAC represents the parents of over 500,000 students in BC.

Wifi, EMFs : Electrosensitivity (ES, EHS) physiologically explained at last

In 2007, a number of libraries employees in Paris complained about headaches, nausea... right after massive installation of wifi emitters in their offices. This led to a fight between Paris' city hall and worker unions (giving way to the set up of a citizen conference on proliferation of EMFs in Paris)

At French National Library BNF, and more recently in Paris subway transport company RATP, it is in the same deleterious conditions that the debate takes place between unions and corporations, relative to questions about health implications at work relative to the in-flow of those new wireless technologies in businesses. Everyone in this file has now access to a first medical answer relative to intolerance to EMFs published in Canadian Newspaper " La Maison du 21ème Siècle"

French researchers have just shown that Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs) does notably modify blood and grain physiology in ES people, and that the impact on those biological markers rises and falls with intensity of the exposure. "We do know with certainty that Electrohypersensitivity is not psychosomatic", tells us Oncologist Pr. Belpomme in a telephone interview. "EMFs do trigger major effects in the brain. The most important effect is the opening of the blood-brain barrier. This allows mercury, organochlorates and other toxics to pervade through the brain, where they cause diverse ailments and neurodegenerative diseases." Pr Belpomme records having 20 new patients per week.

An Oncology Professor at Paris Descartes University, Pr. Belpomme is president of the Association for Therapeutic Research Against Cancer (french acronym ARTAC, artac.info), which shifted to cancer prevention from 2004 on. Since may 2008, his team studies what he named Electromagnetic Fields Intolerance Syndrom (french acronym SICEM). "I have 450 patients and I see up to 20 new patients each week, including children with headaches, memory loss, attention or language troubles. We have the biggest cluster in Europe of electrosensitive patients. This is a major problem in public health."

ES, or SICEM, is an extreme reaction to fairly low exposure levels to electric and magnetic fields of low frequency (50-60Hz) emitted by electric wires and electrical appartus, up to 10MHz or 300GHz radiofrequencies, including microwaves, of wireless devices and their antennaes. This syndrome is recognized in Sweden as a handicap giving way to diverse modifications of the environment by protecting devices that can be state-subsidized to lower exposures.

Most sensitive cases are wrongly imputed to psychiatry : their symptoms (cardiovascular, dermatological, neurological and muscular) are so strong they have to protect themselves with special clothing, paints, metal shieldings, ideally connected to the electrical ground. Others move to forests, caves, and remote places, far away from EMF emissions.

Pr. Belpomme's team put up a diagnosis method based on blood tests and a special type of electroencephalogram (pulsed doppler echographics) which enables them to visualize blood flows in the brain. "Those kind of patients are sure to have troubles in brain vascularization", says the oncologist.

Besides, biological tests demonstrates that 30% have elevated histamine rates, 50% have elevated rate of stress proteins, most of them have a very low rate of melatonin (anticancer hormone), and 30% have antibodies and protein rates which indicates a thermal shock and speak for brain suffering." he adds that half of his patients also develop hypersensitivity to man-made chemicals, both syndromes sharing common brain anomalies.

The oncologist explained us there were 3 distinct levels of sensitivity to pollutants. At first, there is intolerance, triggered by pollutants polymorphism. "This means we are all different. For instance, 30% of the general population has the biggest risk of contracting cancer." Then lies susceptibility, a factor demonstrated by his Swedish colleague Lennard Hardell who observed 16 families with bigger ES because of heredity. There also are active susceptibility factors "such as dental amalgams which act up as antennas" catching the waves. Then, ES manifests in two steps : "the first step is that of induction with overexposure to a specific frequency of EMFs, either acute or chronic way, such as speaking on a mobile phone for 20 minutes a day, says Pr. Belpomme. The first signs of hypersensitivity are pain and a feeling of heat in the ear. The second step is constitution of the disease. Then sensitivity builds up and the person becomes intolerant to all frequences."

The scientific council of ARTAC, a team made of experimented researchers, is presided by Dr. Luc Montagnier, co-Nobel Prize 2008 for discovering AIDS causing human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). ARTAC research coordinator, nutrition specialist Dr Philippe Irigaray, is one of the 5 international experts to have been recently invited by Health Research Funds in Quebec and who selected the best research project in Environmental cancer prevention. Philippe Irigaray underlines that the human brain contains magnetosomes, iron oxides which behave like magnets. ES could depend on their quantity, which varies from person to person.

Those researchers are nowadays preparing 5 articles on electrosensitivity. "This requires a lot of time, says Pr. Dominique Belpomme. They will be published in one year or two." But independent and immediate action is required to reduce overexposure of people to EMFs, adds he. In France alone, an estimates gives 5% of people being electrosensitive, and the proportion rises up with the spreading of wireless technologies. "Studies show that 10 to 50% of population will face becoming very intolerant to EMFs in the next 25 to 50 years. Two patients of mine have been hit by multiple sclerosis triggered by overuse of cell phones, 3 cases of breast cancer, among which 2 relapses after overexposure to EMFs, daily use of computers - and proof is building up against autism and Alzheimer's disease, which seem to be triggered with higher risk than cancer by EMF exposure. Causality is really possible."

Fortunately, this practitioner does provide relief to patients as he administrates them nervous system tonics and helps blood brain barrier close down with antihistaminics. According to World Health Organization (WHO), there is no established link. In 2005, WHO claimed that ES symptoms could be psychosomatic or linked to other causes (bad vision, poor air quality, poor ergonomics, etc...) "There is no such thing as clear diagnosis criteria to this health problem, neither is there any scientific basis permitting to connect ES symptoms to EMF exposure (...)Well controlled studies in double-blind showed that those symptoms were not correlated to EMF exposure." To Pr. Dominique Belpomme, this is utter nonsense. "This is a political backwardness which shows nothing of scientific nature. WHO will have to revise its judgment in the upcoming months. This is societal denial which doesn't take into account nowadays knowledge which permanently builds up."

According to this oncologist, the cause-consequence link between EMF fields and leukemia is no longer to be doubted. "When doses shoots up, leukemia shoots up accordingly. Dozens of toxicological lab studies show that in the most obvious way, in vivo and in vitro."

Ontarian Researcher Magda Havas, from Trent University, claims that negative results to ES testings are compromised by major flaws "Researchers would presume that reactions are instant albeit very often there is a backlash delay. People are not instantly reactive electrical switches. Those studies erroneously infer that if nothing can be felt, then it shouldn't be harmful. We do very well know that you cannot detect the taste of arsenic, lead, DDT, asbestos ; yet all of those are toxics."
