Single-strand DNA breaks in human hair root cells exposed to mobile phone radiation.
Abstract
Abstract Purpose: To analyze the short term effects of radiofrequency radiation (RFR) exposure on genomic deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of human hair root cells. Subjects and methods: Hair samples were collected from 8 healthy human subjects immediately before and after using a 900-MHz GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) mobile phone for 15 and 30 minutes. Single-strand DNA breaks of hair root cells from the samples were determined using the 'comet assay'. Results: The data showed that talking on a mobile phone for 15 or 30 minutes significantly increased (p< .05) single-strand DNA breaks in cells of hair roots close to the phone. Comparing the 15-min and 30-min data using the paired t-test also showed that significantly more damages resulted after 30 minutes than after 15 minutes of phone use. Conclusions: A short-term exposure (15 and 30 minutes) to RFR (900-MHz) from a mobile phone caused a significant increase in DNA single-strand breaks in human hair root cells located around the ear which is used for the phone calls.

Opinion
From Annie Sasco
Some of you asked for my opinion about the Fragopoulou et al. paper ( http://electromagnetichealth.org/electromagnetic-health-blog/mice-proteome/ ).
When I found it, I immediately send Adamantia a congratulation message. I met her more than a year ago at a meeting in Istanbul where she presented some of her work and I enjoyed it. So I was happy to see her work in print. I did not immediately comment because I am an MD epidemiologist and not a lab scientist.
On the other hand I can no longer stand the attitude of lab scientists who are not epidemiologists, nor MDs but who nevertheless spend their time stating how bad epidemiology is.
EPIDEMIOLOGY IS THE ONLY SCIENCE WHICH CAN BRING THE FINAL PROOF IN HUMANS.

Then, as an MD I remind everyone everyday what Hippocrate wrote in the fourth century BC: "primum non noccere" or "First do no harm". The role of doctors, but also of scientists should be to use science as a way towards prevention. This is clearly not the case.
I have always been exceedingly in favour of animal experiments? Why? Because it is the most informative way to get information of health effects of new exposures in the fastest way. Persons may want to believe they are very different from mice but they are not! So, let us get back to the Fragopoulou study.
It is an animal observational study in controlled conditions of exposure to situations to which humans are now exposed to on a daily basis and at a world scale: a regular cell phone or a DECT base, just the ones most of the people have in their hands or their offices or homes.
What do they see? The functioning of the brain of mice is affected by exposure to EMF.
I cannot judge the way they measured gene expression but I really liked their discussion and it made real sense to me.
They cannot compare their results to preceding ones as none seems to have been published.
I trust that paper and I trust these scientists.
I would like to believe that if we could get more information on the mechanisms of carcinogenicity of EMF, we could convince politicians to act. But I am too old to really believe in that any longer. The main reason the issue of mechanisms has been introduced in the IARC Monographs has been to DOWNgrade evidence of carcinogenicity in experimental animals, almost never to UPgrade. It is just to say: "Yes, there is something in animals, but ignore it as humans are different".
We are not that different: what is bad for mice is never going to be good for humans but creating that doubt will allow the industry and all the so-called "independent "scientists working under cover to keep on exposing human populations for 20 or 50 more years before with long-term exposure and provided epidemiological studies are conducted and published, the final proof will come when epidemiologist will demonstrate an increased risk of cancer or any other disease in humans.
History keeps on repeating itself: tobacco, asbestos, benzene, DES, hormones, etc, etc, etc.
Our planet is being destroyed, willingly and knowingly, and with the planet, so are the animal and human populations.
We have to fight

Should Pregnant Women Avoid Using Cell Phones?
"I am 7 months pregnant, and about 2 weeks ago I noticed that whenever I have my phone (smartphone) near my belly (whether I'm using the phone on speaker (I rarely use it on my ear), texting, checking email on it) the baby starts thrashing around in there like crazy. Once I take it away, he settles down. That convinced me how dangerous they are." - jenku02, posted Feb 23, 2012

Dr. Dorothy Nesmith of Harlingen reached out to Action 4 News as a concerned homeowner. She said she refused to allow a smart meter to be installed at her home because she claims possible health risks, from the radiation they emit, can cause flu symptoms, insomnia and even cancer.
