Cellphone use is voluntary, cell tower exposure is not

http://www.theacorn.com/news/2009/0723/letters/014.html

NP Thank you for last week's editorial regarding cellphones and the disputed antennas to be placed in our children's playgrounds. The article made some great points. However, it also made an egregious error by saying there was a lack of studies and evidence on the harmful effects of cell antennas on humans.

It correctly pointed out that cell phones, held by the developing brains of children and teens, pose a greater health risk than cell towers. Scientific findings reported by the Interphone Study for the International Agency on Research on Cancer from several nations of the world, report a 500 percent increase in brain tumors of people 20 to 29 years old and links their cellphone use to malignant cancers of the brain, salivary glands and neck and, acoustic neuromas in the ear, a nonmalignant tumor.

The difference we are trying to point out is that cellphones use is voluntary while chronic exposure to a cell tower is not. Both exposure conditions create a second hand radiation pattern that is becoming harder to avoid.

In 2007, 16 scientists analyzed over 2,000 studies on the effects of electromagnetic frequency radiation on humans and released a preeminent paper on their findings called the BioInitiative Report ( www.bioinitiative.org ). The European Parliament passed a major resolution in April 2009 calling for more precaution in the use of cellphones because of this report and advised not to place antennas near schools and homes.

So far though, the U.S. government is strangely silent on this matter, probably due to the moneyed influence of the telecommunications industry. And the media also seems to be towing their line. But at some point, we all have to ask ourselves: Is the money and convenience worth the associated risks?

It does not take a brain surgeon to understand that the way to reduce a tumor is to cut off the blood supply. LVUSD ought to break this wireless spell by considering the health as well as the educational needs of the students and school personnel and not raise money by embracing wireless digital technologies that can damage them.

French mobile mast debate raging

http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/mpapps/pagetools/print/news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/click_online/8167716.stm?ad=1

BBC NEWS

Reporter, BBC Click

The mobile phone has become indispensable to modern life. But some communities in France believe they are paying too high a price for this convenience.

The infrastructure that allows mobile phones to work is continuing to spread and change the world's landscape.

But a storm is brewing in France over the location of mobile phone masts, with French courts ordering a number to be moved.

Residents living near them have health concerns, but scientists cannot agree if the technology has an impact or not.

Locals in the town of Brindas, in the south-east of France, voiced their opposition after a base station was put up in the middle of the village's schools.

'Worse position'

Frederique Davos, from residents' group Brindas Stop Antenna, criticised the chosen location.

"I think there isn't a worse position in the whole of Brindas to put this mast," she said.

"It's less than 100 metres from the kindergarten, primary school and playground; 200 metres from the village and 300 metres from the local college."

She said that there are fields and other spaces in the village that could have been used instead.

"It is not worth sticking the mast right next to the school when children are more susceptible [to potential hazards] than the rest of the population," she added.

Campaigners cite the BioInitiative Report, in which some leading health experts urged a lower limit on the power of base stations.

They concluded that radio waves could lead to ill health, especially in children.

Hypersensitivity

There are also instances of individuals showing signs of being particularly sensitive to electromagnetic fields.

Professor Dominique Belpomme, from the Paris Descartes University and chair of the cancer research association Artac, agrees with the report.

"We have objective tests which show that there are some functional abnormalities in the brain," he said.

"We suspect that the symptoms patients have are causally linked with the electromagnetic fields."

But hypersensitivity aside, other scientists and the World Health Organisation said research into electromagnetic fields has revealed no major public health risk.

Jean-Marie Danjou, from the French Association of Mobile Phone Operators (Afom) supports this view.

"The World Health Organisation has indicated very clearly that there is no link between the illnesses these people suffer from and the presence of mobile phone masts or electromagnetic waves," he noted.

Cautious approach

The division of opinion has made it difficult for people to make up their own minds.

However, it is also very problematic for mobile phone operators to prove that masts are actually safe.

For this reason, French courts and campaigners are tending to err on the side of caution.

They believe in taking action now on an unproven risk, rather than waiting until the facts on a public health issue are known but it is too late.

Ms Davos from Brindas reiterated: "The telephone operators and the government have not managed to demonstrate to us that there is no danger to children and people living around the masts.

"We don't want to live in doubt for 10 years and then our children or the people living here develop illnesses," she concluded.

The question of where best to situate base stations and at what power they should operate may never be definitively settled by science.

So the whole issue may only be resolved the old fashioned way - sitting down and having face-to-face talks.

Summerland Review

Testing conducted around tower site

Residents living near the site of a proposed cellular telephone tower will conduct testing because of concerns over health risks from electromagnetic radiation.

A Victoria company has been hired to conduct current levels of electromagnetic radiation.

In addition, a general health survey, including blood analysis, is also being taken.

Ava Hare, one of the residents living near the proposed tower, said the testing establishes a baseline from which to determine if there have been changes to health and safety once the tower is completed.

She said high levels of electromagnetic radiation can lead to fatigue, insomnia and cancer.

She added that the risks to health have already been determined.

"There are warning signs on cell phones, yet they want to put the tower in a residential area," she said.

She added that the proposed site for the tower should have been reconsidered.

"I wonder if any of the council members have walked up to see how close the tower is to the houses," she said.

Jeremy Baxter, a media relations official with Telus, said the response in Summerland is not common.

"In most communities around the province, residents are ecstatic when we announce we are putting in a cell tower," he said.

He added that the towers must all meet federal guidelines for safety.

"Health Canada are the experts," he said. "They set the limit. Our towers are significantly under that limit." (????????)

The Danger of Powerline Radiation and Its Threat to Public Health -- New Book Exposes the Extreme Hazards of Powerline Radiation and Provides a Solution to This Problem

http://www.globenewswire.com/newsroom/news.html?d=170192

EWING, N.J., July 29, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The controversial problem of powerline radiation hazards has existed since the days of Thomas Alva Edison in 1842. Author Daniel Donald Brunda DDG LFIBA MOIF IOM reports a comprehensive analysis and thorough study, on the dangers and effects of power lines and radiation to human beings, if this energy is not properly managed, designed, and studied through his fascinating book.

Power Line Radiation, Your Genes, Hereditary Diseases, The Unified Nature Of Electromagnetic Radiation, Energy And Control And The Radiation Limits Of Human Beings presents the result of a long standing investigation of electromagnetic radiation energy emanating from an experimental 13.2KV, 50megawatt transmission line system wrongfully installed 30 meters in front of the author's house in 1978 by Public Service Electric and Gas Co. It proves for the first time that power line radiation causes cancer, heart disease, autism, birth defects, mental illness, etc. It also includes a scientific solution to the controversial problem of powerline radiation hazard that has existed since the days of Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1911), George Westinghouse (1846-1914), Sigmund Freud (1856-1939), & Dr. Schreber (1842-1911). (A German Judge who was affected by high voltage power lines was wrongfully diagnosed as paranoid by Sigmund Freud.)

This book contains invaluable information that can aid in the proper management and conduct of risk analyses, bioelectromagnetic studies, power lines system design, epidemiological studies and environmental impact studies where the harmful effects of environmental radiation energy on human beings is the main concern. This report is also helpful in implementing municipal zoning ordinances, building codes and development and re-development plans. Furthermore, it proves that powerline distributing networks can be properly designed and controlled to operate within the NCR cancer energy limit to protect the public health.

This well-researched scientific analysis is recommended for the general public along with the German public so as to assure that safe electric transmission and distribution lines are used throughout the world. Even the World Health Organization is completely wrong about the safety of power lines which induce harmful electrical currents in the body, blood and nervous system of human beings! Tanning beds definitely cause cancer / 'No doubt' sunbeds cause cancer / Power Lines / Wireless Broadband over Powerlines / Powerful painting / Toronto EMF workshop

Hi All

There are two stories below, about tanning beds 'definitely' causing cancer.

One thing that the researchers have failed to mention, is that there is more to consider than just UV radiation.  There is no mention of electro magnetic fields from the electrical wiring and equipment used in the tanning beds.  There is also no mention of high frequency 'dirty electricity' that would be generated by the fluorescent lighting and other electronic equipment used inside the tanning beds.

Both of these 'electrical pollutants' are significant health risk factors that should also be considered by the researchers.

Tanning beds, UV radiation definitely cause cancer: study

Maria Cheng

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/world/tanning-beds-uv-radiation-definitely-cause-cancer-study/article1235010/

LONDON — Associated Press Last updated on Wednesday, Jul. 29, 2009 01:38PM EDT

International cancer experts have moved tanning beds and ultraviolet radiation into the top cancer risk category deeming both to be definite causes of cancer.

For years, scientists have described tanning beds and ultraviolet radiation as "probable carcinogens."

A new analysis of about 20 studies concludes the risk of skin cancer jumps by 75 per cent when people start using tanning beds before age 30.

Experts also found that all types of ultraviolet radiation caused worrying mutations in mice, proof the radiation is carcinogenic. Previously, only one type of ultraviolet radiation was thought to be lethal.

The new classification means tanning beds and ultraviolet radiation are definite causes of cancer, alongside tobacco, the hepatitis B virus and chimney sweeping, among others.

The research was published online in the medical journal Lancet Oncology on Wednesday by experts at the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, the cancer arm of the World Health Organization.

"People need to be reminded of the risks of sunbeds," said Vincent Cogliano, one of the cancer researchers. "We hope the prevailing culture will change so teens don't think they need to use sunbeds to get a tan."

Mr. Cogliano said the classification means experts are confident that tanning beds cause cancer, but he noted they may not be as potent as other carcinogens like tobacco or arsenic.

Most lights used in tanning beds give off mainly ultraviolet radiation, which cause skin and eye cancer. As use of tanning beds has increased among people under 30, doctors have seen a parallel rise in the numbers of young people with skin cancer, though most types of skin cancer are benign.

According to the studies reviewed by Mr. Cogliano and colleagues, using tanning beds caused about a 20 per cent increased relative risk of developing melanoma, the deadliest kind of skin cancer.

Mr. Cogliano said it was impossible to know how many benign skin cancers might be caused by tanning beds, because of complicating factors like exposure to regular sunlight. He and colleagues examined data from more than 7,000 melanoma cases and found a strong association between tanning bed use and the disease. He compared the link to that found between tobacco and lung cancer.

In Britain, melanoma is now the leading cancer diagnosed in women in their 20s. Normally, skin cancer rates are highest in people over 75. According to a British study from 2003, about 100 people every year die of melanoma attributable to tanning beds.

Previous studies found younger people who regularly use tanning beds are eight times more likely to get melanoma than people who have never used them. In the past, WHO warned people younger than 18 to stay away from tanning beds.

The American Cancer Society advises people to try bronzing or self-tanning creams instead of tanning beds.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'No doubt' sunbeds cause cancer

There is no doubt using a sunbed or sunlamp will raise the risk of skin cancer, say international experts.

Previously, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) assessed sunbeds and sunlamps as "probably carcinogenic to humans".

But it now says their use is definitively "carcinogenic to humans".

Campaigners believe the move, announced in the journal Lancet Oncology, will increase pressure for tighter industry regulation of sunbed use.

The new assessment puts sunbed use on a par with smoking or exposure to asbestos.

However, the Sunbed Association in the UK said there was no proven link between the responsible use of sunbeds and skin cancer.

The IARC is an expert committee that makes recommendations to the World Health Organization.

It made its decision following a review of research which concluded that the risk of melanoma - the most deadly form of skin cancer - was increased by 75% in people who started using sunbeds regularly before the age of 30.

In addition, several studies have linked sunbed use to a raised risk of melanoma of the eye.

The charity Cancer Research UK warned earlier this year that heavy use of sunbeds was largely responsible for the number of Britons being diagnosed with melanoma topping 10,000 a year for the first time.

In the last 30 years, rates of the cancer have more than quadrupled, from 3.4 cases per 100,000 people in 1977 to 14.7 per 100,000 in 2006.

Age limits

Proposals to ban people under the age of 18 from using sunbeds are under consideration by the government in England.

A similar ban has already been approved in Scotland.

The Sunbed Association (TSA) supports a ban on under-16s, but argues there is no scientific evidence for a ban on young people aged 17 or 18.

Jessica Harris, Cancer Research UK's health information officer said: "The link between sunbeds and skin cancer has been convincingly shown in a number of scientific studies now and so we are very pleased that IARC have upgraded sunbeds to the highest risk category.

"This backs up Cancer Research UK's advice to avoid sunbeds completely for cosmetic purposes. They have no health benefits and we know that they increase the risk of cancer."

Ms Harris called for ministers to implement a ban on under-18s using sunbeds immediately, and to close salons that are not supervised by trained staff.

Simon Davies, chief executive of the Teenage Cancer Trust said: "We are concerned that young people are using sunbeds more and more to get a tan and would urge them to avoid them at all costs."

Kathy Banks, chief executive of the Sunbed Association, said: "The relationship between ultraviolet exposure and an increased risk of developing skin cancer is only likely to arise where over-exposure - burning - has taken place.

"However, research has shown that over 80% of sunbed users are very knowledgeable about the risks associated with over-exposure to ultraviolet and the majority of sunbed users take 20 or less sunbed sessions a year."

A Department of Health spokesperson said: "Sunbeds can be dangerous - we must ensure that people who use them do so safely. If necessary we will look at new laws to protect young people."

Well, Well, Well: Power Lines

What they'll say ...

Connie Howard / health@vueweekly.com

http://www.vueweekly.com:80/article.php?id=12548

Of course those who want to put the high-voltage power line through west Edmonton are going to hear the concerns of nearby residents, and of course they're going to, after they've heard those concerns, repeat assurances that there's no evidence of reason to worry and then go ahead and do what they want to do.
I hope I'm wrong, but what I expect they'll do is create so much doubt about potential risks that those who are still uneasy will begin to believe they're being paranoid. They'll assert that there is no compelling evidence of significant health hazards associated with power lines, that the science has been conclusively negative and there's nothing to worry about. They'll say that where a link has been found, it was a poorly designed study. Or things like, well, there was an association here, or there, but we don't know that it wasn't just coincidental.
They'll say all that just like they say there is no proven link between oil industry pollution and cancer clusters, or nuclear power plants and cancer clusters, or between mercury in vaccines and autism even though it is a matter of well-known fact that mercury is a potent neurotoxin. Or like they used to say there was no proven link between the 1976 swine flu vaccine and Guillain Barre, or between smoking and cancer.
They'll cite the consensus of major health organizations like Health Canada, and overlook their history of negotiating in favour of industry, and firing scientists who prefer precaution to good industry relations. They'll say it's silly to be fearful, even though five years ago a massive US study found children under the age of 15 living within 100 metres of high-voltage power lines have close to twice the risk of developing leukemia, and even though a BC study four years ago yielded similarly damning results, and even though an Australian study two years ago found a 300 percent increased cancer risk.
They'll say there's nothing to fear, even though countless studies have given us reason to fear, and even though the Canadian Cancer Society doesn't recommend parents let children play under power lines. But what's a parent to do when the high voltage power lines just happen to be going up in their backyard and property values are going down, and the job is uncertain and a move is out of the question?
They'll defend the power-line plans even though a major report prepared by 14 scientists and public health experts in 2007—the BioInitiative Working Group—for the purpose of doing a comprehensive assessment of the science on health impacts of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) concluded it is clear "that the existing public safety standards limiting these radiation levels in nearly every country of the world look to be thousands of times too lenient. Changes are needed."
"There may be no lower limit at which exposures do not affect us," they write. "It is time that planning for new power lines and for new homes, schools and other habitable spaces around them is done with routine provision for low-ELF [extremely low frequency] environments." The group's review of the science found that exposure to EMR has been linked not only to childhood leukemia, but to a very long list of health problems.
But when it comes to industry, it's innocent until proven guilty, necessary to demonstrate a consistent and significant causal relationship, and until then, it's all alarmist and unsubstantiated fear-mongering. And when it comes to matters of natural health therapies it's the opposite—they're ineffective and dangerous until proven 100 percent safe and effective beyond a shadow of doubt.
In the end, while we debate the precautionary principle and talk about conclusive science and which risks are worth taking and which aren't, we have the heartbreaking realities of the canaries in the mine, the small percentage that sometimes can't prove causation, but have lost someone to leukemia since their move to a high-voltage power-line neighbourhood. Stories that, if we were smart, we would actually listen to and validate rather than dismiss as coincidental.

Margaret Atchison's Power to the People is on display in the South Delta Artists' Guild's Oil & Water juried show at the Kiwanis Centre for the Visual Arts in Tsawwassen. Atchison and her husband sold their home along the right-of-way in the voluntary buy-out program.

It's intense, angry and riveting.

That's how local resident and artist Margaret Atchison sees her painting depicting the new higher voltage power lines in Tsawwassen, a work that's on display at the Kiwanis Centre for the Visual Arts.

The painting, Atchison's first displayed piece, is part of a juried show of works in mixed media by various artists that opened last Thursday at the gallery adjacent to the South Delta Recreation Centre.

"I felt very intense and angry. The more I painted, the angrier I got. I may be a crazy artist because of all the electromagnetic fields that entered my brain," quips Atchison of her work in the exhibit sponsored by the South Delta Artists' Guild.

Atchison's piece in acrylic, pumice and gel, titled Power to the People, is in an exhibit the guild is calling Oil & Water. The painting in bright reds and yellows is aimed at sending a powerful message how people's every molecule have been bombarded with intensified electromagnetic fields (EMF), says Atchison.

"I have also attempted to express the heat and formation of radiation swirling in the atmosphere. The people feel like ants being exposed to radiation, hopeless and helpless, and no chance of escape," she says in her description.

The B.C. Transmission Corporation installed higher voltage lines through Tsawwassen last summer. Since then, more than 100 homeowners living next to the lines have accepted buy-out offers from B.C. Hydro and many of those homes have already been vacated.

Atchison, who also agreed to sell her home but is still looking for somewhere else to live in the community, was a member of Tsawwassen Residents Against Higher Voltage Overhead Lines, which her husband Neil co-chaired at one point.

The group and other citizens waged a long and bitter struggle to stop the project, going to court and even coming up with an alternative proposal to bury the lines. In the end, the lines were installed overhead as originally planned.

BCTC claims the EMF from the lines are within World Health Organization guidelines. In an interview last fall, Brita Colero, community action co-ordinator with the Canadian Cancer Society's B.C./Yukon division, said the cancer society's position regarding EMF is that it recommends the precautionary principle. However, she also noted there is no research, to date, that has found a conclusive link between living next to power lines and childhood leukemia.

Atchison says she's concerned they have passed off the risk to a new group of homeowners, and many of those could potentially be young families with children.

Atchison's painting received what's called a Merchandise Award, one of 12 award categories given for the various works at the exhibit, which runs until Aug. 30.

President Sylvia Bishop says the group's shows display a wide array of works by both talented guild and non-guild artists from throughout the Lower Mainland.

The Kiwanis gallery is open Thursday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information about the guild, visit www.deltaartguild.org.

Letter to the Canadian Minister of Health, The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq.

Honourable Leona Aglukkaq minister_ministre@hc-sc.gc.ca

Dear Madam Minister,

Last week I sent you the following along with 3 studies concerning the Blood Brain Barrier :

"In June, 2008,  I submitted a petition to the Auditor General charging Health Canada with failure to acknowledge independently funded scientific research which, by and large, shows harm from electromagnetic radiation at levels drastically below those allowed by Safety Code 6. I asked for answers, which I did not receive, to explain why many other developed countries, like Sweden, France, Italy, Russia and even China have much stricter guidelines which restrict exposures to 1% of what is allowed by Canada's. The respondent for Health Canada stated, in November 2008, that if/when credible studies are provided, immediate revision of Safety Code 6 would be made, and kept reiterating that there is no evidence of harm from levels of exposures permitted by the code."

Following are 5 more studies demonstrating severe, consistent and irreversible damage to DNA after exposure to electromagnetic radiation at non-thermal levels. Safety Code 6 does not protect against non-thermal radiation, only thermal. Health Canada maintains there are no "credible" health effects at the non-thermal level. Please look at these studies done by independent, non-industry-funded scientists.

1) REFLEX Report, (December 2004) Risk Evaluation of Potential Environmental Hazards From Low Frequency Electromagnetic Field Exposure Using Sensitive in vitro Methods, A project funded by the European Union under the programme "Quality of Life and Management of Living Resources" .

"Twelve institutes in seven countries have found genotoxic effects and modified expressions on numerous genes and proteins after Radio frequency and extremely low frequency EMF exposure at low levels, below current international safety guidance, to living cells in-vitro. These

results confirm the likelihood of long-term genetic damage in the blood and brains of users of mobile phones and other sources of electromagnetic fields. The idea behind the REFLEX study was to attempt replicate damage already reported to see if the effects were real and whether, or not, more money should be spent of research into the possible adverse health effects of EMF exposure. They concluded that in- vitro damage is real and that it is important to carry out much more research, especially monitoring the long-term health of people."

2) Diem et al [2005] exposed human fibroblasts and rat granulosa cells to mobile phone signal (1800 MHz; SAR 1.2 or 2 W/kg; different modulations; during 4, 16 and 24 h; intermittent 5 min on/10min off or continuous). RFR exposure induced DNA single and double-strand breaks as measured by the comet assay. Effects occurred after 16 h exposure in both cell types and after different mobile-phone modulations. The intermittent exposure showed a stronger effect than in the continuous exposure.

3) Paulraj and Behari [2006] reported an increase in single strand breaks in brain cells of rats after 35 days of exposure to 2.45 and 16.5 GHz fields at 1 and 2.01 W/kg.

4) Phillips et al. [1998] found increase and decrease in DNA strand breaks in cells exposure to various forms of cell phone radiation.

5) Sun et al. [2006] reported an increase in DNA single strand breaks in human lens epithelial cells after 2 hrs of exposure to 1.8 GHz field at 3 and 4 W/kg. The DNA damages caused by 4 W/kg field were irreversible.

Madam Minister, this makes a total of 8 studies I have sent you over the last couple of weeks all of which show harmful effects from non-thermal radiation. I urge you to send this data to an independent researcher/scientist, one not in Health Canada which has become infamous for its affiliations with the industries it monitors. Please send it to someone who has no connection to the telecommunication industry, either indirectly (using industry journals to publish "studies" to further his/her career) or directly and ask for an objective opinion. If you need references I would be happy to provide a list of names. If you want more studies, tell me how many are needed, 20? 100? 1000? I've got them.

Many people who have worked for Health Canada in various areas have described it as being corrupt, corrupt to the core (as per Shiv Chopra). It is time for this department to be cleansed for the sake of the Canadian public.

I dare Health Canada to look at its commitment to me to amend Safety Code 6 if I provided one credible and to tell me in writing that there is no credibility to any of the studies I've provided.

Failing that, I dare Health Canada to tell me there isn't enough evidence in the 8 studies I've provided so far to invoke the Precautionary Principle, the true Precautionary Principle, not the one that refers to cost implications and risk assessment. The one that says: "When an activity raises threats to human health or the environment, precautionary measures should be taken even if some cause and effect relationships are not established scientifically." If Health Canada will not follow its mandate and protect our children and families as it should, and as other countries have, then Health Canada has no reason for being. That department should be done away with. Currently Health Canada is a farce, and a dangerous one at that. It is your job, Madam Minister, to end what has been happening for far too long -- either bring in reliable, capable, independent people who answer to the Canadian public and not the corporations,  or do away with this department.

Yours truly,

Sharon Noble

Victoria, BC

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Health Canada refuses to acknowledge that credible scientific evidence exists which demonstrate a biological effect from radio frequency microwave radiation, such as that from FM or cell transmitters. In response to a petition I wrote to the Auditor General questioning the collusion that exists within HC, with many of its scientists or contributing researchers being affiliated with the telecommunication industry, I was told that should a credible study be found, then Safety Code 6 would be revised.

Over the last 2 weeks I have sent 8 studies, 3 for Blood Brain Barrier and 5 for Genotoxicity, to the Minister of Health, Leona Aglukkaq, her deputy minister Morris Rosenberg, my MP Keith Martin, Alex Atamanenko MP for interior BC, plus my local newspaper, and Sarah Schmidt of Canwest News. I intend to keep sending studies weekly.

One person writing letters or sending emails will, in all probability, be ignored. But if many people, from many constituencies care enough to write similar letters, we might eventually get noticed. I urge you to write. Use my letter, if you will, as a template. Raise issues and let the bureaucrats and politicians know that we demand change. Some suggest sending registered letters, which require attention. Following is the address for Health Canada in Ottawa, plus the names and emails of the bureaucrats. You will have to find the contact information for your MP and newspapers.

I suggest everyone join with me in writing weekly, letting everyone know we are aware that there are dangers to which we are being exposed without concern to our health. We know Health Canada is not fulfilling its mandate and we demand change. We deserve the same protection from EMR as do citizens of other countries. Please join me.

Reply to article / Voicing fears through drama / Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) Special Issue

Hi Martin,

I sent the following message, hope they post it.

All the best
Eileen

Your article states that in 2006, the World Health Organisation concluded there was "no convincing scientific evidence" that weak signals from base stations and wireless networks caused adverse health effects.

Please take a look at the enclosed pie chart which was taken from the WHO website, this was presented at a workshop at the EU Commission, 10 out of 14 peer-reviewed studies on base stations found significant increases in symptoms and conform to WHO standards of scientific quality. http://www.buergerwelle.de/pdf/who_and_pubmed_epidemiological_studies_on_base_stations_2006.pdf

Plus a new peer reviewed Swiss study by Frei has shown that mobile phone masts exposure resulted in 32% exposure and mobile phones amounted to 29%, Dect cordless phone base stations 23%. This new study is very worrying as it demonstrates mobile phone masts expose the public to more radiation than mobile phones.   You can choose to use a mobile, but what do you do if you live near a mast?

An international working group of scientists, researchers and public health policy professionals produced the 2007 BioInitiative report.   The report  provides detailed scientific information on health impacts when people are exposed to electromagnetic radiation hundreds or even thousands of times below the guidelines. The authors reviewed more than 2000 scientific studies and concluded that the existing public safety limits are inadequate to protect public health

I suffered for many years with headaches, sleep problems and dizzy spells and was eventually diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 38. I discovered that I was living in a cancer cluster. I was living 100m from a phone mast and now understand that we are not alone as many other cancer clusters have been discovered around phone masts worldwide.

I would recommend the Church ensure that the mobile phone companies indemnify them from any future court actions that may result from the current situation whereby mobile phone masts are located on their property.

Voicing fears through drama

Actors mimic the fears of the citizens of Hortiatis Hill who are concerned about the health risks caused by the antennas.

A Greek couple discovered their son had cancer and when the child recovered and they realised it was the result of exposure to radiation of mobile phone antennas they left their home town.

This is not a true story but, the theme of one in a series of short plays that echoed the real concerns of the citizens of Hortiatis Hill, in Thessaloniki, that is at the centre of controversy over health hazards posed by electromagnetic antennas installed on site.

The scripts of the plays were inspired by the fears of the town's residents who recounted them to actors from the Malta Drama Centre and two international theatre companies, who travelled to Greece last month.

The residents told actors about their futile appeals to politicians to do something about the electromagnetic antennas. However, as depicted in one of the plays, their worries fell on deaf ears.

Such health concerns are not unique to Greece but have been felt throughout the EU. There are still conflicting opinions on the harmful nature of all antennas, not just of mobile phones.

The World Health Organisation recognises that several people attribute health conditions - such as headaches, anxiety, depression and nausea - to electromagnetic exposure. However, to date, scientific evidence does not support a link between such symptoms and exposure to electromagnetic field, according to WHO.

As for the EU, it has advised governments to protect those living close to transmitters by setting safety provisions.

Drama Centre project coordinator Mario Azzopardi explained that research carried out by the centre, as part of the project, showed that in Malta there was one antenna for every 194 people whereas in the UK the ratio was one per 1,297 inhabitants.

Earlier this year the environmental group Flimkien Għal Ambjent Aħjar urged the government to reduce the number of mobile phone antennas due to their potential health threats.

The antennas fell under the responsibility of the Malta Communications Authority that conducted ongoing tests on the antennas throughout the island, a spokesman said.

At the end of last February, there were 2,114 antennas in Malta. This figure includes transmission antennas used for broadband wireless access, radio navigation, maritime, mobile communications, aeronautical, satellite communications and fixed services.

The MCA spokesman said the antennas tested by the authority were "well within the acceptable safety limit".

The Greek Antenna Park Project was a tripartite initiative involving the Malta Drama Centre, the Machina Theatre Company of Asvestohori in Greece and the Business Club Austrialia of Vienna.

The project was sponsored by the EU's Grundtvig Lifelong Learning Programme.

During three separate events held over the past two years, actors from Malta, Greece and Austria travelled to the three countries to explore topics sensitive to the citizens. The subject picked by Malta was immigration while Austria touched on "barriers in the mind".

Through this forum theatre, public awareness was raised on controversial issues. The audience took the roles of "spec-actors" and were encouraged to express their concerns in the open and to "act their life" on stage, Mr Azzopardi explained.

The project ended this month with the Greece expedition and culminated with the publication of a booklet that outlined the actors' journey. Although not much political action took place in Greece about the antennas, the authorities published a written decision to remove 21 of hundreds of antennas from Hortiatis Hill.

The MCA published the results of tests that it conducts on all such repeaters. However, they only say that the level is well within the established limits and do not give the measured field strength, not do they give the distance at which the measurements were taken and neither whether it is at street level or at rooftop level. What is the level of radiation that the people living next door are being exposed while on the roof? Is any tilt in the radiation pattern used and if so what is the angle? Is it different for different repeaters? What is the maximum power used at the repeaters when all channels are in use? What is the gain of the antennas? Whay is such information being hidden from the public?

"As for the EU, it has advised governments to protect those living close to transmitters by setting safety provisions."

Please can we have some more information about the harmful effects of such antennas. It is not something to be brushed off as of minor importance. I am truly concerned and would appreciate any body who would exert pressure to have them set up away from inhabited areas.
Some hope in our congested tiny island!!!
But let's do our best.

We are playing with our lives here. Let's do something about it before it is too late!!!!!!!!

Does Devil oversee prayers? / Allergic to WiFi? / Wind farm will cause devastating problems

Does the Devil oversee prayers at these churches?

How can these churches make deals that can harm their congregation and their neighbours?

How can cell phone companies produce such false information as quoted below?

How can the government the police and health authorities let them get away with it?

Church takes mast money

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/scotland/article6727844.ece

From The Sunday Times

July 25, 2009

Mark Macaskill and Julia Belgutay 0A

MORE than 50 churches in Scotland have installed mobile phone masts, prompting claims they are jeopardising the health of their parishioners for money.

Parishes are earning up to £10,000 a year from phone providers who have installed antennae in spires to broaden their networks.

Most are Church of Scotland but four Scottish Episcopal churches and a synagogue have signed deals.

The practice has been criticised by groups which say antennae could pose a risk to human health. While some studies claim to have linked them with nearby cancer clusters, others have found no evidence of harmful effects.

St Andrew's Church in Irvine, Reid Memorial Church in Edinburgh and Arbroath West Kirk are among those to have signed deals with O2, which typically pays up to £5,000 a year. T-Mobile said some churches were paid up to £10,000 annually.

The network provider 3 said it had equipment in nine churches. Vodafone stated it had rental agreements with up to 20 churches in Scotland, and Orange said masts had been installed in more than a dozen.

In 2006, the World Health Organisation concluded there was "no convincing scientific evidence" that weak signals from base stations and wireless networks caus ed adverse health effects. However, some academics argue they can weaken the body's cells. Dr Andrew Goldsworthy, an honorary lecturer in biology at London's Imperial College, said: "Churches should consider the likely effects on the health of the people living nearby as well as a small proportion of their congregations before allowing the installation of antennae on their premises."

Murdo Macdonald, policy officer in the society, religion and technology project at the Church of Scotland, said: "There is not an official central church policy on phone masts in churches. It is an individual congregation decision but obviously one would urge caution if things are too close to individual houses."

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Episcopal church said while some churches had telecommunications masts, others declined the advances of network providers. She added approval of the main church body was needed for a mast.

Vodafone insisted its base stations observed stringent international guidelines and typical exposures were many times lower than the recommended levels.

O2 said: "We are confident in all of the scientific evidence that has been gathered to date. We are confident there is no risk from masts."

Orange said: "People can be very reassured by the science. Review after review carried

out around the world has not found adverse health effects caused by mobile phone masts operating within international health and safety guidelines."

Are you allergic to WiFi? Steve Miller is
E-mail

by Davey Winder

Saturday, 25 July 2009

http://www.itwire.com/content/view/26496/53/

Steve Miller is not agoraphobic and has not got Swine Flu. So why is he under virtual house arrest? The answer, strangely enough, is because he's allergic to WiFi. No, really.
Although not widely publicised, nor understood by many in the medical profession, Electrical Hypersensitivity (ES) is said to cause symptoms including sleep disturbance, headaches, concentration problems, limb and joint pains, impaired balance and hearing loss.

Steve Miller knows all about it, because he has the thing and it is keeping him trapped inside the 18 inch thick granite walls of his remote detached house near Falmouth in Cornwall, UK. When he ventures out he feels sick, dizzy, confused and suffers from agonising headaches.
A trip down the local high street is a nightmare, and most pubs are out of bounds for Steve. As are, for that matter, airports and hotels. He can no longer travel by train because of the pain and suffering his condition causes.
And it's all caused by WiFi.
According to the
ES support group there has been much media speculation, but also a lot of research, into the ill-health effects caused by "a number of modern wireless communication conveniences" including mobile phones and base stations, DECT cordless phones and, of course, WiFi.
Steve
told The Sun newspaper that he feels "like an exile on my own planet" claiming that it is "almost impossible to find somewhere without wi-fi nowadays".
He says that he has to travel three miles to find a pub without WiFi if he fancies a pint, and even had to move house as being within 50 yards of any other houses leaves him open to being infected by their WiFi signals.
Apparently Steve is not alone, and some two percent of the UK population suffer from the effects of Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity. With cars being equipped as
rolling WiFi hotspots there could soon be no escape for sufferers.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Large crowd turns out to protest proposed wind farm

"It is absolutely devastating to me," he said. "With my disability, I can't live in most houses. My special house cost more than other houses. Only one with my disability can understand. If the wind towers are there, I will have to move. I have a severe form of environmental illness and if the (wind/solar farm) is brought it, it will completely change my life. They don't make good neighbors for people like me."
