The founder died some years ago in a malignant brain tumour, caused according to himself by his mobile phone. His children wanted the statue show him as he was normally – i. e. wearing a mobile phone to his head.

Willard throws wrench into power line project

Legal plea » Rocky Mountain Power wants court to keep town from disrupting construction schedule

By Steven Oberbeck

The Salt Lake Tribune

Salt Lake Tribune

Updated:06/29/2009 07:07:23 PM MDT

Rocky Mountain Power said Monday it will go to court to try to force the town of Willard to allow it to build a high-voltage transmission line through the city despite concerns that electric and magnetic fields from the project could harm the health of nearby residents and damage property values.

The utility plans to ask a 1st District Court judge to bar the town from interfering with its construction schedule after the Willard City Council late last week voted 3-2 to deny it final approval to build the line.

"It was an astounding vote," said Rocky Mountain Power spokesman Dave Eskelsen, who contended the city in early November already had approved the permit. "It certainly caught us by surprise."

Although Willard represents only a tiny segment of the 135-mile-long line that will run from southeastern Idaho to just west of Salt Lake City International Airport, the utility contends the city is now threatening its entire $600 million project. It says the line is needed to ensure the company has enough capacity to serve its Utah customers, whose demand for electricity continues to increase.

"The city's action must not be allowed to unnecessarily delay this project," Mark Moench, the power company's general counsel, said in a statement announcing the filing of a lawsuit against the city.

But Willard's city planner and spokesman, Jay Aguilar, said the council in November only gave the company preliminary approval for the construction permit. It specifically withheld final approval until everyone's concerns were addressed.

And last week a report and presentation by an independent consultant, Cindy Sage of Sage Consultants in Santa Barbara, Calif., raised new questions about the health impact of the electric and magnetic fields (EMF) that would be emitted by the high-voltage lines.

"It was new information that we didn't have," Aguilar said, indicating the report questioned and ran counter to Rocky Mountain Power's assertions that the safety of Willard's residents is not at risk.

In her presentation, Sage told the City Council that EMF is known to cause cancer and that children living in residences near high voltage power lines are reported to have increased risk of cancers, particularly of leukemia.

She said four different laboratories around the world have found that breast cancer cells grow faster under EMF exposures. There also is an increased risk of miscarriages among women with only intermittent exposure.

"EMF is a documented cancer-causing agent since 1998 in the U.S., and 2001 by the World Health Organization International Agency for Cancer Research," Sage reported.

She also raised the prospect that the transmission line would damage nearby property values. "Transmission lines affect future [land] use and development potential."

Rocky Mountain Power offers a different take.

It contends EMF risk to human health hasn't been established. "We're not health experts, so we're relying on the best scientific evidence available," Eskelsen said.

Willard isn't the only community to have concerns.

The segment of the transmission line that stretches from southern Box Elder County north to the Utah-Idaho border sparked more than one round of angry confrontations between the power, public officials and landowners, many of who were upset about the selected route.

"We told Rocky Mountain Power that there is a route through our city that would be acceptable, but they had already decided where they wanted to go and wouldn't consider any alternative," Aguilar said.

Compounds from rosemary fight against
mutagenic effects of radiation

(NaturalNews) The U.S. is turning into radiation nation. In the twenty-three years since Chernobyl, Americans seem to have forgotten the impact of radiation on health. Swept up in the euphoria over an endless parade of wireless devices, we have turned our backs on the common sense that informed us that Chernobyl was a really big deal when we heard the news. Today Americans act as though they are addicted to radiation and completely oblivious of the jack-hammering effect it has on human cells. They appear willing to accept cancer and even death as small prices to pay for the ability to communicate with anyone, anywhere, anytime. As the nation eagerly anticipates the rollout of WiMAX, promising bone-incinerating coverage of 3,000 square miles from a single tower, those who object find they have no voice and no choice. However, recent research has shown there are steps to take in self-preservation. Carnosic and rosmarinic acids naturally deter radiation poisoning.

http://www.NaturalNews.com/z026079_rosemary_cancer_health.html

In two separate studies, scientists in Spain found that nothing fights radiation damage to micronuclei like a simple garden herb known as rosemary. They noted that ionizing radiation causes the massive generation of free radicals that induce cellular DNA damage. They studied the protective effects of several compounds against gamma ray induced chromosomal damage in micronuclei testing by adding various compounds to human blood before and after irradiation. When the compounds were added after gamma-irradiation treatment, the protective effects relied not on scavenging ability, but on activity against free radicals already present in the cells, such as lipoperoxy radicals which are mainly responsible for continuous chromosomal oxidative damage.

The fact that carnosic acid and carnosol found in rosemary are fat soluble allows them to provide highly asignificant protective anti-mutagenic activity. Even the most powerful water-soluble antioxidants lack the capacity to protect against gamma ray induced damage. This study can be found in the British Journal of Radiology, February 2 edition.

In their second study, the generation of radiation induced cellular DNA damage to skin from free radicals was the focus. The researchers sought to demonstrate that rosmarinic acid from rosemary would act as a photo-protector both by acting as a scavenger of free radicals and as an inducer of the body's own endogenous defense mechanisms by regulating tyrosinase activity and stimulating melanin production. They found that formulation of toxic malonyldialdehyde was delayed by the use of rosmarinic acid, and the protection factor was 3.34 times greater than for other compounds studied, as measured in micronucleus testing. In vivo testing showed the capacity of orally administered rosmarinic acid to inhibit skin alterations as a result of UV radiation exposure. This study was reported in the February edition of Food and Chemical Toxicology.

Guildwood No Tower / Childhood cancer / WiredChild /

Dear Supporters and Interested Parties,

Yesterday, the Guildwood Presbyterian Church informed me that the Church "received a letter from Bell Mobility releasing the church from its lease obligation effective August 1, 2009".

This means that Bell Mobility has agreed not to place a cell tower on the church's property.

Thank you to everyone who has helped ensure that this cell tower was kept away from the centre of our village and well away from our children's schools and senior residences.

A special thank you to Councillor Paul Ainslie, John Harris, Past President of the GVCA and Nadia Bello, TDSB Trustee.

Have a great summer,
Kindest regards,
Karina Gelo

Although the story below is about finding a cure for childhood cancer, I believe that these family, friends and medical staff are looking in the wrong direction.

The first thing that they should be considering is 'what is the environmental factor that caused the cancer in the first place'? and 'lets get the child away from that environmental pollutant so that he can recover'!

There is a strong possibility that electrical fields, electro magnetic fields and electro magnetic radiation would be found in this child's home environment at levels which may have caused this cancer.  Medical authorities treating him, should be aware of this danger and should be recommending EMF testing.

Children should not be getting brain cancer!

Racing to find a cure for childhood cancer

"Jack is very social and likes to play with other kids, dogs, read books, play with his tow truck, swim in his pool and play with all of mom and dad's electronics (cell phones, remotes, laptops)," Breanna said.

Family and friends of Jack Serakos, a less-than-one-year-old Coon Rapids boy who is battling brain cancer, have formed Team Jack Attack to race against childhood cancer.

Some 74 people have signed up with Team Jack Attack to take part in the seventh annual Time to Fly Walk/Run fund-raiser to benefit Children's Cancer Research Fund tomorrow (Saturday, June 27), at Harriet Island, St. Paul.

There will be a 10K run, a 5K run, a 5K Walk and 1K Kids' Fun Run. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. with the first event at 7:30 a.m.

Indeed, Team Jack Attack has already exceeded its $5,000 fund-raising goal by bringing in some $5,500 with more donations expected, according to Breanna Serakos, Jack's mother.

"We have met our goal and would like to exceed it by more," Breanna said.

Jack was born to Breanna and Tony Serakos in July 2008, but at about three months old he started sleeping more and randomly vomiting.

After several trips to the doctor, Jack's parents were told that he had a virus, but knowing something "wasn't right and trusting our gut feeling that had been lingering for a couple of weeks," his parents took Jack to the emergency room at Children's Hospital where he was diagnosed with a brain tumor, according to Jack's story on his Caring Bridge Web site.

"We were devastated to say the least and our world has been changed forever," the Serakos' state on the Web site.

Jack has chiasmatic glioma which is generally slow growing, but inoperable, Breanna Serakos said in an e-mail to the Coon Rapids Herald.

He has undergone three brain surgeries for a biopsy and shunts, MRIs, countless CT scans, a feeding tube placement and many more procedures that his parents have lost track of, she said.

"Currently, Jack is doing fairly well," Breanna said.

Jack is in the second week of a two-week break from his current round of chemotherapy and "is enjoying the time off," she said.

"Each round of chemo is six weeks; he has four weekly infusions and then two weeks off," Breanna wrote in the e-mail.

The Serakos' take Jack to the oncology clinic at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis and he spends about one afternoon a week there for his chemo infusion.

After his chemotherapy protocol is completed in January 2010, Jack will have MRIs every three months to monitor any changes in his tumor.

"We pray that the tumor remains stable for as long as possible," Breanna said.

"If it begins to grow, we will probably do another chemo protocol to protect his vision."

As far as brain tumors go, Jack's prognosis is better than most, according to Breanna.

"The tumor itself is low grade – slow growing, a good type to have if you have one," Breanna said.

"Unfortunately, it is in one of the worst locations and inoperable. We will continue to control the tumor with chemo until he is old enough for radiation; our main goal is to preserve his vision."

Jack's treatment is outpatient so he is only at the hospital for three to four hours a week.

He is at home the rest of the time with weekly visits from the physical therapist and occupational therapist to help him catch up, according to Breanna.

"Jack is very social and likes to play with other kids, dogs, read books, play with his tow truck, swim in his pool and play with all of mom and dad's electronics (cell phones, remotes, laptops)," Breanna said.

"He has caught up immensely the past couple of months and is doing what little boys should be doing."

Both Breanna and Tony Serakos work full time and health insurance has covered Jack's medical expenses except for deductibles and co-pays.

But both parents have had to miss lots of work and that adds up, Breanna said.

The Time to Fly Walk/Run benefits Children's Cancer Research Fund® in its efforts to eradicate childhood cancer.

Team Jack Attack will join thousands of people who will walk or run in support of childhood cancer survivors and current patients, as well as honor those kids who have lost their courageous battles with the disease, according to Kris Huson, marketing and communications manager, Children's Cancer Research Fund, which is headquartered in Minneapolis.

Huson provided these facts about childhood cancer:

• Childhood cancer is the No. 1 disease killer of U.S. children – more than from asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, congenital anomalies and pediatric AIDS combined.

• Brain cancer is the No. 1 killer of children with cancer.

• One in 300 children will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 20.

• Approximately 10,730 new cases of pediatric cancer were expected to be diagnosed in children 0-14 years of age in 2008.

• Each year, 3,000 children die and 35,000-40,000 are in treatment.

• Childhood cancer has a huge societal impact – 180,000 potential years of life are lost to it every year.

According to Huson, childhood cancer is not funded to the degree that adult cancers are funded due to lower incidences, which makes private funding (like that from Team Jack Attack) critical.

The National Cancer Institute's budget is $4.6 billion. Of that, breast cancer received 12 percent, prostate cancer received 7 percent and all 12 major groups of pediatric cancers combined received less than 3 percent, Huson said.

"And even to secure NCI funding, researchers need to show very promising preliminary data, which also takes significant resources to gather," she said.

"Some of the seed money for this preliminary data comes from private funding – from nonprofits such as Children's Cancer Research Fund – which like all nonprofits in this economy has experienced a dip in donations."

According to the Team Jack Attack page on the www.childrenscancer.org Web site, the team is raising money to help other children, like Jack, win their battle with cancer and prevent some of the long term and devastating side effects from treatment.

People in the community who want to support Team Jack Attack can do so by visiting the Time to Fly Web site at http://www.ccrftimetofly.com .

Today's communication technology has rendered an entire generation of teenagers incapable of holding real conversations in real time. Meanwhile, newspapers are struggling to stay afloat. Highway accidents and brain tumors are on the rise.

Now, the Digital Age has its clutches on the family, bringing new norms in bad parenting. To name a few:

Tetris Addled Parent: "If you don't stop hitting your sister, I'm going to take away your DS, your iPod, your Mac and your Wii," the parent threatens the child. The parent, unable to take his eyes off his own laptop, never follows through. "That's it. I'm not going to tell you again," he says several times without actually looking up from his Tetris game. The child falls asleep with his game beeping in his hands. Nobody learns anything except how to create horizontal lines of tetrominoes.

Meddling Mario Mama: When families used to eat dinner together, this parent gave his/her child an eating disorder with a constant barrage of: "Get your elbows off the table. Put your hands in your lap. Don't chew with your mouth open." Now it's: "Don't slouch over your DS. Who taught you to play Wii like a girl? You'll get carpal tunnel if you keep pressing your thumbs on the controller like that." The long-term effect of this behavior is not a child who sits up straight with well-developed hand-to-eye coordination.

It is a dull-eyed 25-year-old hunched over games where monsters kill baby rabbits.

Tech Knows No Bounds Parent: This parent hands over a GameBoy whenever he should be teaching his child how to function in society. The other day I saw a little boy no more than 4 years standing on the crowded sidelines of his older sister's championship soccer game, wearing headphones, struggling to hold open a miniature laptop in his arms. Beside him was his 3-year-old sister with a DS she couldn't possibly understand. Despite their stimulating diversion options - and maybe because of them - these poorly trained and bewildered children still screamed and begged for attention from their irritated parents.

Co-Dependent Guitar Hero Dad: As a kid himself, this guy always wanted, but never was allowed, to play in a rock band. Known to embarrass his wife in nightclubs by standing next to the stage playing air guitar along with the bar band, this parent drags neighbors down to the basement to watch his child play Mississippi Queen on Guitar Hero. "I'm telling you, we've got another Black Sabbath in the making down here," he says proudly, as if Ozzy Osbourne would be a good thing to have in the basement.

Txt. Me 24-7 Mom: This parent, formerly known as Helicopter Mom because of her ability to hover over her child without being physically present, does not know how to let go. Why should she, when she can text her high school-er morning, noon and night say, "How was your breakfast/dinner/ lunch-y lunch? Don't forget to Purell! TTYL, pumpkin muffin! :>3/4"

The late family/parenting guru, Dr. Benjamin Spock (1903-1998), concerned in the 1960s about the effects of the simple 19-inch black-and-white TV, would most certainly shake his head about the Digital Revolution in Y2K09.

On the other hand, Dr. Spock, were he still alive, might consider how lucky we parents are to have all this technology.

What with the ruinous impact of Facebook, WiFi, Wii, DS, DSi, IM, iPhone and iPod, there's somebody to blame besides ourselves.

A SCHOOL under threat of sharing its boundary with a telecommunications antenna and service box is breathing a sigh of relief after a new site was confirmed.

Cockle Bay Primary School launched a full-scale petition last week after being told new telco 2degrees was planning to install a cellphone mast just metres away from classrooms.

Due to the negative reaction to the proposal, Manukau City Council and 2degrees decided to relocate the site across the road at the entrance to Paparoa Park, opposite the Litten Road shops.

Councillor Jami-Lee Ross has worked with 2degrees in assigning the most appropriate locations in the area and says within a week of hearing negative feedback from the school, he took action to have the site revised.

"This just goes to show this is what consultation is all about," Mr Ross told the Times. "We took on-board the negative reactions from the school and acted."

Earlier in the week, Mr Ross and councillor Dick Quax were criticised for showing poor judgement in choosing the school boundary as a possible site.

Principal Graeme Lomas was in disbelief when he saw draft plans.

"I can't believe two councillors would have helped to choose such an inappropriate site. They should have pre-empted no one would be happy with this outcome.

"People don't want them close to houses but it raises questions about the value of one household with more than 700 students."

But Mr Lomas was delighted when the Times contacted him yesterday to say a new location had been identified.

"I hope this gesture of goodwill will satisfy our parents, who obviously have strong views on such sites being located on school boundaries," he says.

In two days, the school received more than 200 responses from parents, grandparents and students opposing the mast, mainly on health grounds.

Following concerns from Manukau residents in April, eight initial sites for the cellphone masts were revised to be further away from residential properties.

Mr Ross says the new site at the entrance to Paparoa Park is suitable because it's designated as a road reserve – towers cannot be placed on park reserve unless it is absolutely necessary.

His priority is for antennae to be as far away from residential areas as possible.

"I was happy it was going to be moved away from residents' properties," says Mr Ross. "I suppose we did not give enough thought to the school, and whether or not there would be concerns from the school.

"The company responded to those concerns and that's a good thing."

The consultation period for the new sites is open until this Friday for residents and schools to have their say.

Feds' $300M loan guarantee helps nokia Siemens buy nortel wireless

http://www.calgaryherald.com/Feds+300M+loan+guarantee+helps+nokia+Siemens+nortel+wireless/1717801/story.html

Canwest News ServiceJune 21, 2009

A federal government agency will help finance the breakup of Nortel Networks with $300 million in loan guarantees.

Nokia Siemens disclosed the funding from Export Development Canada as it announced plans to buy Nortel's wireless business for $650 million US.

The move is ironic, as Nortel failed to get financing from the Conservative government late last year in a bid to avoid filing for bankruptcy protection Jan. 14.

"We are delighted to have secured the backing of EDC for this transaction," said Luca Maestri, the company's chief financial officer.

"Nokia Siemens Networks is committed to Canada as an important centre of excellence for next-generation wireless technology."

The Finnish-German company is counting on Nortel technology and an installed equipment base with major U. S. and Canadian carriers to build a strong base in North America, which complements a stronger profile in Europe.

EDC has been a vital financing lifeline to Nortel as other lenders fled in recent years as its fortunes fell. It provides the vital financing that allows Nortel's international deals to go forward.

But EDC appears to have had second thoughts about the prospects for Nortel survival as an independent entity.

As a key member of a creditors committee, it has a significant stake in Nortel fortunes and hopes for restructuring. Nortel recently got court approval to seek up to $30 million in financing for export deals from other sources after lengthy negotiations with EDC for more financing appeared to stagnate.

Nokia Siemens will hire 2,500 Nortel wireless research employees, a majority of the wireless research teams in Ottawa, Dallas, Mexico and China. Nortel has close to 1,000 wireless employees in Ottawa.

Subject: Statement in the House of Commons

Hello Gerry,
Below is the text Mr. Simms read in the House of Commons today.  The petition has been submitted and we should receive a response in the next couple of months.
Tim
Mr. Scott Simms (Bonavista—Gander—Grand Falls—Windsor, Lib.):

Mr. Speaker, it is my honour to present to the House today a petition compiled by a gentleman by the name of Gerry Higgins from Norris Arm, who is a tenacious man, to say the least. He certainly has a battle.

Several years ago, just around Christmas 2005, Mr. Higgins lost his wife to cancer. She was just 45 years old. Her name was Margaret. Since then he has been on a crusade.

He would like to present this petition, and I would like to do it on his behalf, that the undersigned residents of Canada request the Government of Canada undertake an independent study to determine the negative effects of electromagnetic fields on human health.

There is evidence to suggest that electromagnetic fields emanating from all types of transformers, substations and power lines located near residences can pose significant health risks to individuals and their families. Mr. Higgins is indeed compelling the government, through this House, to complete an independent study.

I salute Mr. Higgins by bringing his petition to the House of Commons of Canada.
Timothy Downing
Parliamentary Assistant
Office of Scott Simms, MP

Many thanks to Henrik for finding a link to the programme (below).
My bit starts at 02.35.30 by the clock bottom right (about 1cm+ from the end) and runs for 10 minutes. [On mobile phones and kids, for those who've just joined us.] I'm quite pleased at getting a full 10 minutes exclusive interview time on what I understand is a high-profile Radio London programme. Thanks to Vicky Fobel of Wired Child for opening that window of opportunity.

Best to all

Mobile phones for children: a boon or a peril? / Man puts up fake phone mast to stop Vodafone installing a real one

Mobile phones for children: a boon or a peril?

Half of British children aged 5 to 9 own a mobile phone, and a brand for tots is imminent. Some experts are unhappy

From
June 23, 2009

Female toddler (15-18 months) using mobile phone.

In a world where everyone is busy texting and chatting, more and more parents believe that their little ones should join the fun. In spite of dire warnings about the long-term harm that mobile phone use may wreak on young children's mental and physical health, we have just passed the tipping point: more than half of British children aged between 5 and 9 own a mobile phone.

Now, in this rapidly expanding market, a major network is about to adopt a range of kiddie-phones designed for children as young as 4, with claims that its handsets are safer and smarter. But can there be any sense in texting toddlers?

Health concerns about the impact of mobile phone use on adults' brains may have largely subsided but government guidelines still warn that children's vulnerable grey matter should be protected. Professor Lawrie Challis, an emeritus professor of physics who has led the Government's mobile-phone safety research, says that parents should not give children phones before secondary school. After that, they should encourage them to text rather than to make calls, as texting exposes their brains to lower levels of electromagnetic radiation.

"We have no idea if they are different in reaction to this sort of radio frequency," says Challis, "but there are reasons why they may be — children react differently to ionising radiation, radioactivity and gamma rays. If you are exposed to too much sunlight as a child, you are far more likely to get skin cancer than if you are exposed as an adult."

A disturbing study by researchers at Örebro University Hospital in Sweden last year indicated that children may be five times more likely to get brain cancer if they use mobiles phones.

On top of this comes new concern about the long-term effects of mobile phone use on the mental health of youngsters. This month Dr Michael Carr-Gregg, a leading Australian psychologist, called parents who allow young children to use mobile phones "insane". Carr-Gregg, a University of Melbourne professor of paediatrics, is worried about the power of mobile phones to distract and overexcite.

According to a new survey conducted by Carr-Gregg, 40 per cent of children with mobile phones are sleepdeprived on school nights, as peer pressure has made it normal for children of 6 and 7 to stay up until the early hours texting friends. His evidence, revealed in a series of Australian academic seminars, suggests that millions of children are allowed mobile phones in their bedrooms, creating a generation of overtired "zombies".

Other new research has linked sleep deprivation in children with hyperactivity symptoms and hormone imbalances that increase the risk of obesity and diabetes. Carr-Gregg says that no child should be allowed a mobile phone until the age of 12.

Nevertheless, the landmark point at which more than half of British children aged between 5 and 9 own mobiles has been passed, according to research by Josh Dhaliwal, the co-founder of MobileYouth, a specialist research consultancy that tracks young people's technology use. "Lots of children's phones tend to be hand-me-downs from adults," he says. "My sister gave her seven-year-old daughter a mobile for her birthday and that's about the norm now."

Sensibilities are changing rapidly: a recent poll by Populous suggested that the number of parents who believe that it is acceptable to allow a child under 12 to own a mobile phone has increased by more than a third in the past 12 months. Until now, fears of a parental backlash have deterred mobile networks from marketing handsets in the UK specifically for the very young. A planned Disney service aimed at those aged 8 to 14 was scrapped in 2006 because of an "adverse retail environment". All that is about to change, says Dhaliwal.

Enter the candy-coloured, brightly lit Firefly Mobile, specially designed for children aged from 4 to 12, with simplified controls (only five buttons) and a restricted set of functions. Kevin and Frances Crean, a Dublin-based husband and wife who are marketing it, say that the phone will launch in Britain on a major network before the end of the year. The toy-like handset has an "on" switch, an "off" switch and two buttons with a male and female figure on — one calls mum, the other dad (perfect for traditional families). Another button accesses a phone book that contains up to 20 numbers. The phone book is PIN-protected and so can be entered, to begin with at least, only under parental supervision. The phone cannot download internet files and can be set up to block calls from numbers that it doesn't recognise.

Frances Crean, a mother of three, says that a family panic led them to look for a youngster-friendly phone: "In summer 2006 we had a health scare with our daughter. She was 6 and attending a day camp when she developed a sore neck and a rash — classic symptoms of meningitis. Nobody at the camp had contacted us to say that she was unwell, but when she was collected we realised that she looked very ill and rushed her to hospital. Thankfully we got the all-clear. We wanted to find a phone that would be safe for her and found this one being made in America. We felt that if we didn't market it now, someone else would."

It helped that her husband is a former sales director for a mobile phone company, although Crean, 34, says that the £85 phone's specially limited features mean that it is no great money-spinner for network operators. "They are not designed to encourage children to spend time chatting. Nor can you take photographs or send texts, though on one of our models children can receive them." The phone's text-less nature means that it is far less likely to be misused in the playground for virtual bullying. The creators also claim that it produces levels of electromagnetic radiation that are below the European recommended levels. These limits are, however, set for adult use of phones: the European Parliament has urged European ministers to bring in stricter limits for children's exposure.

Crean adds that the phones are marketed at parents rather than at children — this is important in Britain, as the network operators have agreed a code of conduct which stipulates that they won't market phones specifically to under-16s. But what constitutes marketing to children can be moot: in the Irish Republic, where the toy-like handset is already on sale, the phone's vendors includes Smyths, the country's biggest toy store, and the Creans ran a short radio and bus advertising campaign for Christmas.

Crean says that despite the restricted functions, the handset passes the kiddy-credibility test. "Our eldest daughter is 9 and understands why it isn't good for her to have a regular mobile," she says. "A good few of her friends have normal ones, though."

More than 7,000 handsets have already been sold in Ireland, and the Creans are currently deep in commercial talks with several UK networks. "We are definitely going to have the product launched there before the end of this year," she says. "In Ireland our phones have just had a network launch with O2, having been marketed initially as a sim-card-free phone two years ago."

Not everyone in Ireland considers the Firefly a boon for young children, though. Aine Lynch, the chief executive of the National Parents Council, argues that the Firefly would be more appropriate for children aged 11 or 12, rather than those as young as 4. She points out that it would prevent them from accessing the internet, ringing up inflated phone bills or calling and texting people unknown to their parents. "Targeting a phone at a four-year-old causes us concern," she says. "It gives rise to questions as to where parental responsibility is going. Why would kids need to be contacted by mobile phone? Why are they not in the care of their parents, teachers or supervisors?"

Other European countries are heading in the opposite direction to Britain and Ireland: the French Government introduced laws earlier this year that ban sales of mobile phones to children under 6 and prohibit advertising them to children under 12. And a report released in January by the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority concluded that children's use of mobile phones should be limited until the potential long-term health risks are identified. But in Britain, the Government's watchdog, the Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research Programme, appears to have stalled on its declared plan to fund such a study. No work has been commissioned from its £3.1 million research budget.

Given this apparent official indifference, toddler-phones are set to become an increasingly common UK phenomenon, says MobileYouth's Dhaliwal. Several other companies, including Samsung, are building handsets for children aged 4-5 with limited functionality, though none is yet signed to a UK network, he says. Given the parental enthusiasm for dialling up their little darlings, such phones may prove to be the best option, he adds. "There are legitimate reasons why you would not sensibly want a child to have a fully functioning handset, even though people currently do this. You are giving them access to the internet and you can't control what sort of people gain access to them. At least restricted kiddie mobiles prevent this from happening."

Man puts up fake phone mast to stop Vodafone installing a real one

Mobile phone masts. You either love 'em or hate 'em. Some people say there's not enough, and want more to get better 3G coverage. Others claim they're the devils work, is the reason kids don't play outside anymore, and cause everything from ingrowing toenails to clusters of cancer.

Meet Sean Denman from Hordle, in Hampshire. He runs a service station (petrol station to you and me, gas station to our American and Canadian cousins, and probably something else in the rest of the English-speaking world). And yes, his petrol station does really have a blog.

Vodafone approached Sean and offered him £4,500 to put a 3G mast on his property. Rather bizarre, you may think - as we're always being scolded for using our mobiles whilst filling up the car - but I digress.

Mr Denman turned down the money, and told Vodafone to sling their hook. So they then decided to shift their plans and put it on the pavement outside. Planning permission was turned down initially, but agreed on appeal.

So our garage owner, now out of pocket, decided to take revenge. He parked a car on his property, overhanging the proposed site, and welded a big metal pole to it. A bit of DIY later, and the people of Hordle had acquired their very own 'fake' phone mast.

According to the BBC, Mr. Denman is not a happy man. " had to get land surveyors to mark down where this construction would go.

"Not having complete right of way, I decided I can't put anything on the pavement so took a car, welded on a box and pole which overhangs by the correct amount covering where the mast and box would go.

"They [Vodafone] feel they can put their construction anywhere and make up any excuse. I am not against it, but not in this sort of place."

Vodafone retorted, telling the BBC they weren't planning to put up the mast until late 2010 anyway. "The proposed radio base station… is required to improve the 3G coverage to our customers in the area" - and then went on to admit they'd now need to seek another set of planning permission to move the site of their proposed installation across the pavement a bit from where they had wanted to put it - still outside Mr. Denman's property.

I'll give you one guess what our annoyed garage owner will do next..

The Ohio Petition Becomes the National Petition 101 Mitigate America

By Heather Jo Johns, Medical Correspondent

Medical: Internal Medicine June 21, 2009

“Thousands of emails, phone calls, and letters besieged Dr. Rhoda Zione Alale to appeal for the expansion of the Ohio Petition to every state. Thus, the National Petition 101 was launched in May 2009.”

For_Immediate_Release:

(Free-Press-Release.com) June 21, 2009 --

In a candid interview with Dr. Barbara Reynolds, founding editor of USA Today Newspaper and Visiting Professor at Central State University (CSU) in Wilberforce, OH and a class of Honor Students at CSU, Dr. Rhoda Zione Alale demonstrated HOW profound electric static radiation is in the body from prolonged exposure to cell phones, laptops, etc. "We were blown away"...said one of the students." Dr. Reynolds and her producers are penning a script for two TV shows to introduce Dr. Alale and her team to the nation to bring awareness to environmental toxins and their effects on our lives. . .

Dr. Rhoda Zione Alale is hailed as a hero in Ohio. She is the 2008 Recipient of the Congressional Order of Merit Award and Presidental Commissioner. For the past 3 years, she has unselfishly battled to save herself, her family, her neighbors | friends, and communities throughout Ohio from radiation and acid poisoning from environmental toxins. Ohio, called a "Mini-Hiroshima," by former Astronaut and Senator John Glenn (reported in the New York Times), has converging industrial acids, particular matter, greenhouse gases, nuclear radioactive waste, and non-ionizing radiation from cell phone masts and power transformers that is creating epidemics of skins rashes, swollen lymph nodes, respiratory illnesses, heart attacks, asthma, respiratory failure, kidney , muscle, liver disease, autism and other birth defects and cancers of every kind. "We are losing our ability to protect the unborn, in Ohio, if we do nothing then every child in the state could be born with autism or another birth defect in the next decade. We need every home, school, jail, prison, hospital, business (especially those with WIFI), hotel, office, etc. mitigated and filtered to decrease our exposure to these toxins in the indoors"… said Dr. Alale at a medical Conference, attended by doctors, nurses, and allied health persons, from OSU, UC, WSU, CU, at the MARRIOTT HOTEL in Dayton, OH. The EPA reports that 6 out of 10 homes in some areas and 7 out of 10 in other areas is to toxic for people to live in. In fact, the EPA notes that almost 75% of the state has the highest level of ionizing nuclear waste from uranium that was buried 50 years ago that is now surfacing as RADON. Additional, USA Today national news paper named Ohio second in the nation with the number of schools with cancer causing toxic air. "It is unthinkable to note that our schools are poisoning our children and their teachers, but schools that are not mitigated certainly are greater risks of causing health problems in their students and staff"... Dr. 'A' said. In fact, the Teachers Association of Ohio is grappling to pay healthcare cost for the care of so many teachers who are fighting cancer, heart, kidney, lung, diabetes and lymph diseases."

Without funding, Dr. Alale recruited volunteer doctors, nurses, engineers, and students to help her in public health screenings to see "How many people were toxic from radiation?"

they launched, The MiChi Health EpiCenter and screened a sample population of 2,100 persons. They found that 96% of them were at risk for radiation poisoning and had static radiation present in their bodies. The problem with radiation converging is so profound, in Ohio, that GAS STATIONS now post WARNING SIGNS that say…

"DANGER OF EXPLOSION FROM STATIC ELECTRICITY"

Please do not return to your car until you are finished re-fueling. Such action can cause a spark that can result in serious injury or death."

Dr. Alale, a Board Certified Health Physicist and Registered Nurse, invented the eStatic Test™; the "ELF Test" ™; and a Health Physics training program of protocols for diffusing radiation in the body to prevent explosions at the GAS PUMPS and radiation poisoning in the populous. Training and certification will be available by WEBINAR beginning the summer of 2009. Dr. Alale and her team penned Policy Drafts for the Ohio Legislation to introduce legislations to make environmental adaptation and mitigation mandatory for all Medicare and Medicaid Providers as well as to empower prescriptive authorities of Physicians to work with schools to engage Health Physicist Services to mitigate wireless in schools | offices and venting the indoor spaces to support them in complying with the new JARED'S and OSHA Laws. Additionally, the policy drafts pen directives to enhance the skills of all Home Care Personnel so that they can also screen homes for these environmental toxins and empower the frontline efforts to save Ohioans. These efforts ware positioned to forge the passing of HOUSE BILL 159 for Universal Health Care in OHIO to prepare for the massives suffering from radiation and chemical poisoning in the state. Government sponsored health care is in 12 states in the central America which include, Montana, North and South Dakota and others now receive health benefits because of massive health disparities from nuclear waste dumped there 5 decades ago.

When Jason Shafer and his Team, from the Obama Administration, toured Ohio, they stopped to visit Dr. Alale and the Greenspace Living Laboratory to see the Mitigation Project Prototype for home, school, and office adaptations. He and his staff were dumbfounded to see the heralding levels of radiation in her home and the amounts of industrial acids that were converging there. This is WHY? everybody in this development is getting cancer and many of the babies in this city have autism or other birth defects. When they saw the maps and the article supporting her defense, they encouraged her to pen the Ohio Petition and later the National Petition 101. It was launched in May 2009 along with the Proclamations of 36 other Governors and Majors across America to bring attention to the fact that so many Americans are becoming suicidal, violent, critically ill from electricity and so many chemicals in the air.

Empower the movement. 100,000 signatures are needed. Sign the National Petition 101 | Mitigate America at www.michihealth.org or www.safegreenschools.com.

http://fairfieldvoice.com/2009/06/20/cell-towers-another-inconvenient-truth-an-open-letter-to-us-cellular-president-jack-rooney/

June 15, 2009

Dear Mr. Rooney:

Big Tobacco and Big Cell Towers

A very significant thing happened last week. In addition to your letter to our community printed in the Thursday Fairfield Ledger, the House voted 301-97 to pass federal legislation stringently regulating the tobacco industry, following the Senate's 79-17 vote. That marked a great achievement after a decades long battle.

But even more noteworthy is that, contrary to its competitors, Phillip Morris - the nation's largest tobacco company - came out in support of the bill saying it was behind tough but fair regulation. Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., sponsor of the bill and committee chairman at the memorable 1994 hearing where tobacco industry executives denied nicotine was addictive, relished the long-sought victory:

"I think we are today at the last gasp of the tobacco industry's efforts to protect their profits at the expense of the health and lives of the American people and to get children to take up this habit."

That 1994 hearing seems to have taken place so long ago. We have learned so much so quickly on the science of cancer and smoking. But it was only 15 years ago that what we now know to be a dishonest corporate statement was glibly justified on the basis of their being a lack of any credible scientific evidence that smoking was addictive. The profit motive overrode any sense of corporate responsibility, of honesty, or of prudence.

The smoke is clearing now, but only after millions of dollars of lawsuits, cigarette taxes, thousands of lung cancer deaths, and surgeon general notices. The federal government is only now stamping out the last vestiges of that smoky 1994 thinking.

Any Lessons Learned?

It would be comforting to think that we, consumers and corporate executives, have learned something from that costly exercise. Consumers cannot wait until the government creates laws to take responsibility for their health. Corporations cannot wait for government to create laws to take responsibility for their customer's health. The consequences are potentially fatal for both.

The painful reality is that if we do not self-regulate but wait for government regulation to recognize and fix such a problem, the human and social costs will be so mammoth that we will never make them up, let alone recapture the lives of those who have been compromised by our shortsightedness. And we will have Big Brother mandating solutions to the problem that we could have better and more quickly fixed ourselves.

No Credible Evidence of Health Risks?

Your statement, Mr. Rooney, that "to date, there is no credible scientific evidence that cell phone towers pose a risk to people's health" is a public statement you may feel compelled to make. You may feel confident that it is true. You may feel that, if it were not true, your corporation's interests would be at serious risk. You may not wish to entertain any risky discussion on the possibilities that it is not true now, or may be revealed as untrue in the future. You may fear you will be viewed as a traitor to your industry if you should truly and openly engage on this real debate.

However, whatever is the case, a large and growing number of developed countries and thousands of scientists and doctors have, with the support of voluminous and expanding scientific research, come to a contrary conclusion. The evidence is not merely credible. It is mounting and of very serious concern. We can not put our heads in the sand, however inconvenient this truth may be.

The Credible Evidence

To illustrate this point: The national laws, among others, of New Zealand, Italy, China, Bulgaria, Hungary, Russia, Switzerland, Austria, and New South Wales, Australia are considerably more stringent than the current laws in the US and would likely not permit the Depot Street tower installation, which is sited within 1500 feet of three schools (St. Mary's, Lincoln Elementary, and Maharishi School) and within 50 feet of residences and offices.

The European Parliament, representing all the member nations of the European Union, "concerned about the continuing uncertainties about possible health risks concerning electromagnetic radiation," adopted a report on April 2 of this year, by a vote of 559 to 22 providing that antennas, mobile phone masts and other electromagnetic emitting devices should be set within a specific distance from schools and health institutions.

The Parliament called for stricter regulation and protection for residents and consumers. "Industry actors are being encouraged to use their power to give better protection to people living nearby and to prevent a proliferation of poorly positioned masts and transmitters. The placement of antennas, mobile phone masts, and high-voltage power lines should be negotiated between industry actors, public authorities, and residents' associations in order to minimize health risks and legal action cases. This will also ensure that EMF-transmitting devices are kept clear of schools, crèches, retirement homes, and health care institutions."

The adverse health effects documented at levels below the FCC guidelines you claim your tower is in compliance with include altered white blood cells in school children; childhood leukemia; impaired motor function, reaction time, and memory; headaches; dizziness; fatigue; weakness; and insomnia.

This is based on numerous epidemiological studies of people living near cell phone antennas in places including Spain, the Netherlands, Israel, Germany, and Austria. In all of the studies, exposures are orders of magnitude below the FCC guideline. [I will transmit to you separately the reference and citations to these studies]. In 2007, Dr. Henry Lai, at the University of Washington, had already documented over 40 scientific studies showing adverse biological effects of radio frequency radiation at low intensities below the FCC standards [citations separately transmitted].

Compliance with the current FCC standard is not an assurance of benign health effects, nor would it protect US Cellular from liability for injuries resulting from the tower's emissions, any more than smoking before (or after) the Surgeon General's warning protected Phillip Morris from liability. In this case, the FCC regulation is only based on the short-term thermal or heating effects on the body over a six-minute period, not on long-term effects, i.e., it is not valid for school children exposed eight hours a day, five days a week in a classroom several hundred yards from the antenna. Nor does the FCC standard claim to account for dangerous non-thermal biological effects. The studies have demonstrated that both long-term thermal and non-thermal effects pose serious health risks.

As Norbert Hankin, Chief EMF Scientist of the US Environmental Protection Agency stated:

"The U.S. Federal Communications Commission, (FCC's) exposure guidelines are considered protective of effects arising from a thermal mechanism, but not from all possible mechanisms. Therefore, the generalization by many that the guidelines protect human beings from harm by any or all mechanisms is not justified."

In light of even the above small sampling of the global record, no one can fairly claim that there is no "credible evidence" that cell phone towers, at certain radiation levels, do not pose a health risk. The European Union, numerous individual nations, and a proliferation of provinces and cities throughout the world have not based their independent protective actions on mere rumor. And the thousands of scientists and doctors who have studied the issue and expressed their serious concern cannot all be charlatans.

Better Safe Than Sorry

The real question is not whether the RF emissions of cell phone towers are safe, but what the safe radiation levels are. The answer to that question is currently a moving target. In this uncertain environment, what is a responsible corporation to do? Deny any credible evidence exists of a health risk? With all due respect, it does sound like the tobacco hearings of 1994 all over again. Whether that is entirely justified remains to be seen. But pardon my skepticism for those of us who have had to deal with the impact of corporate deception on the health of their loved ones. We cannot wait to see how the science finally sorts out — we cannot as a society again take that risk. We already know enough to know better.

You must, in all decency, go the extra mile with us and dialogue with us to diligently seek every possible accommodation with the communities and customers you serve who have legitimate and scientifically-based concerns about their children's safety and the services they buy from you.

The dawning of corporate responsibility seen in Phillip Morris's bold move sets a precedent we can all admire, however little and late it may have come. I do hope that US Cellular will see a similar opportunity here, at a more propitious time in the curve where much of the possible damage to human life from their industry has not yet materialized.

Let Us Meet

I have asked to have a community meeting with US Cellular to seek an accommodation which may include, among other things, the selection of an independent mutually selected board to review the safety of the tower, review the contamination studies of the alternate sites, weigh the advantages of those sites, identify the costs of sanitization (which costs would not be borne by US Cellular), and/or devise modifications in the microwave pathways to mitigate the impact of emissions on the schools and those near to the tower. I have not received a substantive reply to date, except to receive a copy of a report from a company hired by US Cellular to determine if the tower complies with the FCC's problematic standards.

The University has received commitments from competitors of US Cellular that they will not use towers closer than 1,200 feet to schools or residences. Whether market forces, public awareness, government intervention, enlightened corporate responsibility, or a combination of them all will bring the needed evolution about is unclear. But I have little doubt the evolution will occur.

We would prefer to remain with our current vendor and say that we have grown through this process together with you. However, if you close the door to continued discussions on how we can accommodate our concerns, we will terminate the University's contract with US Cellular, and so will many other residents of Fairfield.

Let us meet and work this out.

Very truly,

William Goldstein

The images of chickens struggling to stand under overgrown breasts, and cow carcasses being forced through massive meat grinders may make viewers of "Food Inc." avert their eyes. But director Robert Kenner hopes his film is ultimately an eye-opener.

Kenner's thoughtful, if occasionally revolting, documentary bills itself as an exposure of the food industry's underbelly that will make you "never look at dinner the same way."

Bid to beat the electric blues

Whenever Michelle Berriedale-Johnson, 63, leaves her London home (also her office), she dons a broad-brimmed hat, lined with net, and a diaphanous silvery jacket.

This isn't just a style statement: her glam garb is made from bobbinet, a fine net incorporating silver threads, to help protect her against electromagnetic radiation (EMR).

Michelle, an old friend and colleague, suffers from electrosensitivity (ES), a condition that Dr Andrew Weil describes as 'heightened responsiveness to
electromagnetic fields and illness resulting from it'.

Principal sources of EMR are mobile phones and masts, Wi-Fi, DECT cordless phones, televisions, computers, wireless headsets and power lines. Michelle dates the onset of symptoms to 1998: 'I broke the extending aerial off my mobile, but continued to use it – with my head, as I learnt later, acting as the aerial.'

She noticed a buzzing in her right ear, some memory loss and general malaise, but a new phone with a working aerial seemed to solve the problem. Four years later, however, it started again when she was working at her old computer which had a cathode ray screen.

Changing to a flat screen helped, but in 2007 she bought a state-of-the-art computer with 'a huge screen, which I was glued to for eight hours a day. I
didn't realise it came with built-in, enabled Bluetooth networking [which allows electronic devices to communicate wirelessly]. Also, the nearby Royal Free Hospital had installed eight mobile-phone masts on its roof, which beamed into our house.'

By February 2008, Michelle, usually one of the most energetic, 'up' people I know, was 'very depressed and lacking in energy, as if I was always about to get flu. I had chest pain, diarrhoea, felt nauseous and lost my appetite. My memory deteriorated and my vocabulary went to pot'. As editor of Foods Matter, a magazine and website dedicated to allergies, Michelle had run features on ES.

She realised that 'the sensitivity initiated by the aerial-free phone was heightened by the Royal Free masts, then tipped over the edge by the Bluetooth'.

Dr Andrew Goldsworthy, formerly of Imperial College London, explains in a report for the Breakspear Hospital (which specialises in allergy and environmental illness) that 'all of us are electrosensitive to some degree but some more than others'.

The symptoms occur, it seems, because EMR can interfere with – and block – cellular communication. (Find his report and other useful information and links at foodsmatter.com.)

In Sweden, electrical hypersensitivity is a recognised condition, with skin and memory problems identified as the most common symptoms, along with fatigue, weakness, headaches, chest pain and heart arrhythmias. Although Western doctors are mostly sceptical, Michelle's GP was sympathetic: 'He admitted he knew little about ES but sent me for tests to ensure that nothing else was amiss, and asked to be kept informed about other tests and treatments,' she says.

Michelle bought an electro-smog detector to identify the main sources of radiation, and reverted to a pre-Bluetooth computer. She has banned all 'wireless' devices and swapped low-energy light bulbs – which give off EMR – for old-fashioned tungsten ones. The side of her house facing the Royal Free is shielded with bobbinet curtains and special paint.

'It has restricted my life, but I'm lucky that I can adapt the house and work at home,' says Michelle. 'Many ES sufferers, who live in flats and work in offices, have a much harder time. The UK needs to recognise and research the condition. Also, crucially, we need greater discrimination about the
siting of mobile-phone masts, and Wi-Fi should be banned in schools.'

MOBILE PHONE ALERT: Evidence and recommendations from scientists
and physicians on electro-magnetic radiation (EMR)

VICTORIA, British Columbia, June 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Prominent researchers around the world are raising the alarm about the adverse health effects of wireless technology. Today there are 4 billion cell phones in the world, and these and the other devices we use every day -- PDAs, Wi-Fi, cordless phones, baby monitors and more -- are immersing us in a type of harmful radiation our cells have never encountered before in human history.

As Dr. Kerry Crofton, a health educator and concerned parent, reveals in her latest book, "Radiation Rescue" (published by iUniverse), the jury is no longer out ... there are thousands of studies showing adverse biological effects. In "Radiation Rescue," Dr. Crofton brings together, for the first time, the evidence and advice from an international panel of leading scientists, physicians and EMR technicians who tell consumers everything they need to know about how to protect themselves and their families. Children and young people are especially vulnerable. The good news: there are safer ways to use these high-tech devices.

The book also offers detailed information and healing interventions for EMR-related health conditions, including the growing incidence of electro-sensitivity. There are surprising connections between EMR and insomnia, infertility, cancers, Alzheimer's disease, and even Autism Spectrum Disorders.

"Radiation Rescue" is the cornerstone of a consumer education program, founded by Dr. Crofton, which will be delivered internationally in conjunction with the book's contributing experts. Read more at http://www.radiationrescue.org
