The first, long-term, low-level animal study of non-thermal microwave exposures done in the United States

This is from my book Dirty Electricity pp 49-50:

At one memorable BEMS meeting in the late 1970s, I was seated
next to Louis Slesin, publisher of Microwave News, the best newsletter for
keeping up on all aspects of EMF research. A University of Washington
research group, headed by William Arthur Guy, presented the results
of a $4.5 million study that they had conducted for the United States
Air Force, using a rats in a germ-free exposure environment to reduce
environmental variability. One of their slides showed eighteen cancers
in the one hundred exposed rats, but only five cancers in the one
hundred sham-exposed controls. A quick calculation told me that this
difference was very unlikely to have happened by chance. Nevertheless,
the authors were declaring this a "negative" study.

The exposures in the experiment were to non-thermal (nonheating)
levels of pulsed and modulated RF at microwave frequencies
(2450 MHz). I asked a question during the meeting about it, and
Lou Slesin and I met with the authors after the presentation. Th e
authors danced around this striking fi nding with completely illogical
arguments. First, they claimed that the control cancer level was too
low, and then that we couldn't add all the cancers together, since they were
of diff erent types. It turns out that most of the cancers were of
endocrine system organs.

This was the first, and to date only, long-term, low-level animal
study of non-thermal microwave exposures done in the United States. In
their scientific publications at the time, and still in their interpretation
today, this group refuses to acknowledge that this well-done study
showed RF microwave exposure to be a potent animal carcinogen. In
addition, at midlife, their exposed rats also had significant elevations
of immune system T and B cells very similar to the Kaiser Tacoma
aluminum workers. Like the aluminum workers, the rats were mounting
an immune response to the microwaves. I think that with chronic
immune stimulation, the immune system fatigues and fails, allowing
the cancers to occur.

Effective early identification and treatment of autism is a public health emergency.
As recently as the 1970s, autism was believed to affect just one in 2,000 children.
This newly released data is based of children born in 2000 and means autism possibly affects roughly 1 million U.S. children and teens.

Comment:

This story is obviously not good news when you factor in the significant fertility problems that many people are having.

Perhaps when only one in two families can have children and then many of them suffer from autism, people will get rid of their wireless devices and demand wireless free communities?

IARC's RF / cancer classification

Dear Mrs Atzmon,
The IARC Monographs classification of Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields (RF-EMF) covers the entire radiofrequency segment of the electromagnetic spectrum (30 kHz-300 GHz).
Within this spectrum, the electromagnetic fields around (or the radiation emitted by) mobile telephones represent the most intense and most wide-spread exposure situation, for which a small increase in risk for glioma and acoustic neuroma has been found in the group of 'heavy users'.
Because there were also some indications of increased cancer risks from studies on occupational exposures to different frequency-ranges (in the military, in the plastic-ware industry), the IARC Working Group did not want to restrict the overall evaluation to "RF-EMF from mobile phones" or to "RF-EMF from mobile phones that were used in the late 1990s" or to "RF-EMF from mobile phones that were used in the INTERPHONE study", since many other devices emit the same type of RF radiation, e.g., base-station antennas, radio/tv antennas, WiFi stations, smart meters, etc. Therefore, all these fall under the same broad evaluation of "Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields".

This is what the Working Group discussed and decided last year. Of course, because the exposure levels for many of these other devices and exposure situations are so much lower than the exposure to someone who has a functioning cell phone against her/his ear, the risk will be considerably less (although the hazard still exists).

I hope this is sufficiently clear to be useful.

Thank you for your interest in our work.
Sincerely yours,
Robert A Baan PhD

Reply by Cindy Sage:

March 30, 2012

Dear Dr. Baan,

This statement is a valuable clarification of what the new IARC 2B classification for RFR covers,  but immediately raises the question -on what basis do you assume that less exposure (lower levels of RFR) are  automatically considered  'less harmful'?  When you look at SAR exposure levels of RFR that cause pathological leakage of the blood-brain barrier, for example, it is not true.   Lower exposures are shown to be more bioactive, thus potentially more harmful.  This appears to be true with respect to DNA damage and failure to repair, for induction of HSP and other measures of disruption of homeostasis and damage to biological tissues.

A linear, dose-response relationship for RFR bioeffects and adverse health effects has long been questioned.   In the case of both low-dose ionizing radiation and low-intensity non-ionizing radiation, many studies now show that biological effects do not hold to a linear, dose-response relationship for harm.   Recent studies point to serious effects from chronic, low-dose exposures to endocrine disrupters, and for other chemical toxins.  Recent studies show that chronic exposure to low-dose ionizing radiation and to low-intensity radiofrequency radiation are not 'less harmful' and a strict, linear dose-response relationship cannot be assumed to hold true.

Thus, there is little support to draw a conclusion that because "exposure levels for these other devices and exposure situations are so much lower than the exposure to someone who has a functioning cell phone against her/his ear, the risk will be considerably less (although the hazard still exists)."

As the recent paper by Vandenberg et al (2012) conclude:  "The concept of nonmonotonicity is an essential one for the field of environmental health science because when NMDRCs occur, the effects of low doses cannot be predicted by the effects observed at high doses. In addition, the finding that chemicals have adverse effects on animals and humans in the range of environmental exposures clearly indicates that low doses cannot be ignored."

No positive assertion of RFR safety can be made for chronic exposures at any level. Further, speculation that lower-dose NIER may be less harmful, or can be extrapolated from higher intensity exposures is not justified.  The public health consequences of guessing wrong, or, for the moment minimizing these low-intensity risks to health will be enormous and represent a preventable cause of unnecessary disease.  The rollout of wireless technologies in societies across the world, often creating involuntary and unavoidable RFR exposures at environmental levels of consequence to health, require a more cautionary approach.

Thank you for your continuing contributions in this area, and for engaging the public and decision-makers in this important discussion.

Living in a cave without all the waves

"electrohypersensitive persons" on Australian TV

The square of the town hall took on Saturday morning, looks like a television studio for an interview with Jean-Claude Gast by the host Rosie Kingham.

The lives of "women of the caves" is not a common story: the press and the French television channels have repeatedly reported the unusual decision of these two women forced to choose to live in length of years in the discomfort of a grotto of virgin waves all over the town of Saint-Julien-en-Beauchene (Hautes-Alpes).
Their resolve challenges with strength, describing himself as "electrohypersensitive" (a neologism brand new), they feel they have found that this parade for protection from electromagnetic fields harmful to their health.

The media coverage of this startling news today exceeds our borders, finding echoes to the antipodes, since Australian television has shifted in recent days, in the Beauchene.
For National Geographic, a team of four professionals in film came, accompanied by an interpreter.

"Show that this sensitivity does exist"

Director Rosie Kingham regularly presents a series of programs under the title "Taboo", sharing experience extremes experienced throughout the world. She felt that the news of Saint-Julien has its place. Regarding motivation, she says: "My wish is to get the message that this sensitivity still poorly understood, does exist. Should be that beyond a collective awareness, the company wants to address this problem. We hope our report will serve to relay this. The problem is international, but there is so far very few studies of physical phenomena. We met people who were suffering. One of them has insisted that she must constantly justify his attitude, while no one is able to explain what happens. But she claims to have no other choice, to the detriment of family life: it is the sacrifice!
"

Anne Bernadette and endure the seasons as they come, in the glow of candles and under heavy sweaters. One of them has just spent her third winter. Other solutions, other places were searched, without success so far.
The report has gathered the testimonies of the two people involved, their neighbors, representatives of the association IEHS (Inter electrohypersensitive), and the mayor of the commune.

The cave is located in the municipality. The message of the mayor, Jean-Claude Gast, is clear: "My position is that of an elected aware of suffering in boundary conditions. The problem is beyond my expertise, but I kept all the administrations concerned. I wish now that the state recognizes these symptoms. "

Cellphone use during pregnancy linked to hyperactivity

Pregnant mice were exposed to radiation from a cellphone that was muted and silenced and placed above their cage. A control group of mice were placed in a separate cage, on which sat a cellphone that was deactivated.

After measuring the electrical activity of adult mice that were in the cages as fetuses and putting them through a series of behavioural and psychology tests, researchers found that mice that were exposed to radiation tended to be more hyperactive. Those mice also were found to have reduced memory capacity.

Readers may remember a story some time ago where a disgruntled Telstra technician in Sydney hijacked a friends restored army tank and used it to demolish a number of mobile phone tower equipment sheds. He went to jail for his deed but he is now out and preparing another protest, but this one won't involve a tank. He is setting up a business measuring EMR emissions and advising people on the health effects of mobile phone towers, etc.

His story was on the latest Today Tonight TV program.

Long Term Care and the Danger from Wireless Devices

Included below is my letter to Ontario's task force on abuse and neglect
in Long-term care homes. They are inviting submissions from the general
public. It would be great if more people, wrote about the reality of
electrosensitivity and the suffering caused by symptoms which are often
subjective in nature and not easily recognized by a nurse or caregiver.
Now that Ontario's Ministry of Health is funding and encouraging all
long-term care homes to install wifi systems, the most vulnerable people
among us, the elderly and disabled, many of whom are non-verbal, are at
risk of grave harm. I urge health professionals and anyone who is
electrosensitive themselves to send a short note informing the task
force of how much a person can suffer when forced to endure wifi 24
hours a day, seven days a week. In my parents' residence, routers are
placed in the lounge area and people in wheelchairs are left sitting
underneath them for hours every day. Even a few short lines would be a
great help. We have to speak up to help those who cannot speak for
themselves.

Thanks,
   Lori

Please go to:
http://longtermcaretaskforce.ca/index.php

My letter to the long-term care task force:

The most serious danger to the well-being of long-term care home
residents is the introduction of wireless technology into the long-term
care homes. The wireless local area networks (more commonly know as
"wifi") that have been introduced into the City of Toronto long-term
care homes, and many other homes throughout Ontario can be considered to
violate the 2010 Long-term Care Homes Act, which states that all
residents have a right to safety and comfort in their residences.

The wireless routers broadcast twenty-four hours a day, seven days a
week. The computers-on-wheels that they communicate with add another
layer of radiofrequency (rf) radiation to the constant wifi. This rf
radiation was classified as a Class 2B carcinogen by the World Health
Organization last May 2011. (Many scientists doing research in this area
feel there is enough evidence to justify a 2A classification.)

As someone who is electrosensitive, I know first-hand that this
technology can cause distressing and unremitting symptoms. One of the
most common early symptoms of sensitivity to the kind of radiation
emitted by cellphones, masts, and wifi is something known as the
microwave auditory effect or Frey effect. It is sometimes confused with
tinnitus from other causes, as it consists of an internally experienced
tone, which becomes louder as exposure and radiation intensity
increases. Sufferers experience this tone as emanating from the back of
their head, the centre of their head, or just behind the head. It is
relentless and intolerably annoying.

Other common effects of radiofrequency radiation exposure include:
insomnia, vertigo, headache, memory problems, difficult concentrating,
fatigue, increased blood sugar levels, heart palpitations, immune system
dysfunction, depression, anxiety, and skin rashes. Biologic effects
include increased permeability of the blood-brain barrier after even
short exposures, causing the brain to be exposed to toxins and possibly
contributing to the worsening of dementia or even the onset of
neurodegenerative illnesses.

It is perhaps not well known that cellphones and other wireless
technology were brought to market without adequate safety testing. The
10 watt per square meter limit for exposure was based on heating effects
only, measured in a gelatinous substance after six minutes of exposure.
Recent studies on rf radiation shows that it has many biologic effects,
including increased glucose uptake by neurons, possibly needed by the
cell to re-establish ion balance as rf radiation is thought to cause
irregular gating of calcium-ion channels in the cell membrane.

It has been estimated that anywhere from 2% - 5% of the population is
particularly sensitive to this radiofrequency radiation (popularly known
as microwaves), quickly experiencing discomfort when this radiation is
introduced into their home or workplace on an ongoing basis. Another 10%
- 35% seem to develop problematic symptoms after months or years of
exposure. (I would like to note here that although we commonly think of
the long-term care homes as places where people go at the end of their
lives, their are many younger mentally or physically disabled people who
will spend decades in the homes.)

My own father was left sitting for hours under a wifi router in 2009 in
Cummer Lodge. At this time the routers were broadcasting constantly
despite the fact that the computers had not yet arrived. He developed an
extremely itchy rash all over his body, with symptoms matching the
condition known as bullous pemphigoid. Around this time I was just
learning about the high levels of radiation coming from wifi systems,
and asked that the routers be turned off. The staff decided to turn off
the system until the matter could be reviewed. My father's rash began to
go away immediately and within two weeks he was completely free of
symptoms. In his 92 years he had never experienced such a rash either
before or after this exposure. (This effect of rf radiation was
described in the August 2009 edition of The Journal of Pathophysiology,
in an article by Dr. Olle Johansson.)

Unfortunately, the City of Toronto went ahead with wifi implementation,
and Cummer Lodge decided to turn the wifi on again in July 2011. Family
members were not informed of the introduction of wireless technology,
nor are we able to refuse to allow our loved ones to be exposed to this
technology on a constant basis. In early 2010 I had met with Ms. Sandra
Pitters, then General Manager of the City of Toronto's long-term care
homes. All my attempts to have some input into the review of the
technology were rebuffed, and even the names and positions of those
people in the Ministry of Health (HOBIC) who had decided to have wifi
systems implemented were withheld for almost a year.

Many residents of long-term care homes are non-verbal, and unable to
articulate the discomforts or suffering that they may be experiencing.
There has been no effort on the part of the long-term care home
management to monitor the effects of wifi on the residents, or to
determine who might be the more electrosensitive among them. As someone
who finds it difficult to spend even two hours in the home since the
wireless technology began broadcasting, I find it most distressing that
the most vulnerable citizens among us should have this forced upon them.
I choose my words carefully and do not exaggerate when I say that for
some of the residents, the constant exposure to rf radiation will be a
form of torture. It is the most serious abuse and most serious violation
of the rights of residents to safety and comfort that I have encountered
since my parents first moved into Cummer Lodge in 2007.

The most important thing the Task Force can do is to demand that
wireless systems be immediately removed from all long-term care homes,
and that cell phone base stations not be allowed on or near the homes.
Please do not allow the fact that the use of cell phones and other
wireless technology has become widespread and effectively normalized to
deceive you into thinking that the radiation from these devices has no
harmful biologic effects. There are a significant and increasing number
of people who cannot tolerate exposure to rf radiation, and the elderly
and disabled are more likely than the rest of us to experience serious
suffering from this technology.

Sincerely,

Lorraine Penner

Fertility Problems and EMR Exposure

paceincnet@gmail.com thought you might be interested in this link:

http://www.canada.com/health/Infertility+rates+rising+Canadian+couples/6157547/story.html

They also left you these comments:

The phenomenon of decreased infertility is also associated with exposure to radio-frequency and microwave emissions especially with the greater use of 24-hour indoor SMART meter to and from appliances and RFID applications.

We could expect near total infertility within 3 to 4 more generations..  and then who will be left to pay for the wireless technology installed - and also associated satellites, I-Cloud systems, etc? - not mention taxes and to subsidize the same technology as "innovation" for economic "stimulus"!

Pesticides linked to honeybee decline

The first study conducted in a natural environment has shown that systemic pesticides damage bees' ability to navigate

Note - Many humans who suffer from multiple chemical sensitivities, also suffer fro electro hypersensitivity, showing that wireless radiation should also be considered as being highly involved in this situation.

4G Causing Worse Symptoms?

4th Generation Wireless Radiation

We are picking up problems with 4G/LTE in South Africa and have tried to raise the alarm bells with government.

Dehydration, repetitive gastroenteritis, blurry vision, lower back pain – locked stiff , heart palpitations, breathing problems, chronic sinusitis, hair loss, sore ovaries and gonads, burning itching skin, pains in head and pressure in ears and sore joints especially elbows. Muscle weakness.

Birds, animals and trees are being affected too. Vets have commented on severe hair loss in cats.

Austrian EMF Medical Guidelines

On March 3, 2012, the Austrian Medical Association (ÖAK) released
guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of EMF-related health
problems and illnesses:
http://www.aerztekammer.at/documents/10618/976981/EMF-Guideline.pdf
It was great to see that the work of various CHE-EMF partners is quoted
in this guideline.

The suggested treatment protocol includes:
1 History of health problems and EMF exposure
2 Examination and findings
3 Measurement of EMF exposure
4 Prevention or reduction of EMF exposure
5 Diagnosis
6 Treatment

In addition to basic diagnostic tests, for example, 24-hour monitoring
of blood pressure (absence of nighttime decline), ECG, and heart
variability is recommended.

EMF exposure level testing and subsequent reduction strategies are a
major component of this guideline.
Recommended threshold levels (e.g. SBM-2008) and EMF testing protocols
(e.g. VDB Guidelines) are based on the building biology approach.

AC magnetic fields
within normal limits < 20 nT or 0.2 mG ... significant concern > 400 nT
or 4 mG

AC electric fields
within normal limits < 0.3 V/m ... significant concern > 10 V/m

RF radiation
within normal limits < 1 µW/m2 ... significant concern > 1000 µW/m2

In contrast to the Nordic Council of Ministers
http://www.norden.org/en/publications/publikationer/2000-839, which
suggested in 2010 to use ICD-10 codes R00-R99 "symptoms, signs and
abnormal clinical and laboratory findings not elsewhere classified" and
specifically R68.8, the ÖAK recommends to use Z58.4 "exposure to
radiation."

The primary treatment consists of reducing EMF exposures. In addition,
lifestyle coaching (e.g. exercise, nutrition, sleep habits, stress
reduction), holistic therapies (e.g. antioxidant therapies), and
treatment of symptoms (until the cause(s) have been identified and
eliminated) are also recommended.

Best regards,
Katharina

European Parliament Declaration: recommends EHS & MCS be in each member country's ICD & WHO's ICD

This is really important. Please lobby your regional MEPs to sign this.
It is the equivalent of a UK Parliament "early day motion" written by 5 MEPs that needs at least an extra 370 other MEPs to sign by 14th June 2012.  Over half the total number of MEPs need to sign for this Declaration to be "adopted". Very few Declarations are "adopted"

EU residents can influence the outcome of a Written Declaration by lobbying MEPs and asking them to sign up. Find your MEPs here:
Scroll down the Country box to the UK and then select your region.
You can then click on individual MEPs to get their details.

At present there are no ICD codes in general use for CFS, MCS or EHS, so doctors can't even officially record the incidence as, effectively, these diseases/syndromes do not officially exist - although CFS and MCS are more recognised that EHS. It is crazy and irresponsible as we can't make progress if the number of sufferers / diagnoses are not recorded. Getting ICD numbers is just a start - but an essential one.

The Nordic Council of Ministers does categorise electrosensitivity as a work-related symptom-based
diagnosis code ICD-10 ;  R68.8   or R69 or Y68.8 or Y69 for occupational cases.

We should have universal ICD and sub-codes for types EHS that are used all over the EU.

I hope ES-UK, RRT and Electromagnetic Man will produce a draft short (1 page A4 maximum) letter that can be sent to MEPs to inform them of this important matter and persuade them to sign the Declaration.

I will be happy to read / check / advise but do not have the time or energy to produce it. Please take this email as your "starter for 10".

Best regards

Alasdair
