The first, long-term, low-level animal study of non-thermal microwave exposures done in the United States

This is from my book Dirty Electricity pp 49-50:

At one memorable BEMS meeting in the late 1970s, I was seated
next to Louis Slesin, publisher of Microwave News, the best newsletter for
keeping up on all aspects of EMF research. A University of Washington
research group, headed by William Arthur Guy, presented the results
of a $4.5 million study that they had conducted for the United States
Air Force, using a rats in a germ-free exposure environment to reduce
environmental variability. One of their slides showed eighteen cancers
in the one hundred exposed rats, but only five cancers in the one
hundred sham-exposed controls. A quick calculation told me that this
difference was very unlikely to have happened by chance. Nevertheless,
the authors were declaring this a "negative" study.

The exposures in the experiment were to non-thermal (nonheating)
levels of pulsed and modulated RF at microwave frequencies
(2450 MHz). I asked a question during the meeting about it, and
Lou Slesin and I met with the authors after the presentation. Th e
authors danced around this striking fi nding with completely illogical
arguments. First, they claimed that the control cancer level was too
low, and then that we couldn't add all the cancers together, since they were
of diff erent types. It turns out that most of the cancers were of
endocrine system organs.

This was the first, and to date only, long-term, low-level animal
study of non-thermal microwave exposures done in the United States. In
their scientific publications at the time, and still in their interpretation
today, this group refuses to acknowledge that this well-done study
showed RF microwave exposure to be a potent animal carcinogen. In
addition, at midlife, their exposed rats also had significant elevations
of immune system T and B cells very similar to the Kaiser Tacoma
aluminum workers. Like the aluminum workers, the rats were mounting
an immune response to the microwaves. I think that with chronic
immune stimulation, the immune system fatigues and fails, allowing
the cancers to occur.

Effective early identification and treatment of autism is a public health emergency.
As recently as the 1970s, autism was believed to affect just one in 2,000 children.
This newly released data is based of children born in 2000 and means autism possibly affects roughly 1 million U.S. children and teens.

Comment:

This story is obviously not good news when you factor in the significant fertility problems that many people are having.

Perhaps when only one in two families can have children and then many of them suffer from autism, people will get rid of their wireless devices and demand wireless free communities?

IARC's RF / cancer classification

Dear Mrs Atzmon,
The IARC Monographs classification of Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields (RF-EMF) covers the entire radiofrequency segment of the electromagnetic spectrum (30 kHz-300 GHz).
Within this spectrum, the electromagnetic fields around (or the radiation emitted by) mobile telephones represent the most intense and most wide-spread exposure situation, for which a small increase in risk for glioma and acoustic neuroma has been found in the group of 'heavy users'.
Because there were also some indications of increased cancer risks from studies on occupational exposures to different frequency-ranges (in the military, in the plastic-ware industry), the IARC Working Group did not want to restrict the overall evaluation to "RF-EMF from mobile phones" or to "RF-EMF from mobile phones that were used in the late 1990s" or to "RF-EMF from mobile phones that were used in the INTERPHONE study", since many other devices emit the same type of RF radiation, e.g., base-station antennas, radio/tv antennas, WiFi stations, smart meters, etc. Therefore, all these fall under the same broad evaluation of "Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields".

This is what the Working Group discussed and decided last year. Of course, because the exposure levels for many of these other devices and exposure situations are so much lower than the exposure to someone who has a functioning cell phone against her/his ear, the risk will be considerably less (although the hazard still exists).

I hope this is sufficiently clear to be useful.

Thank you for your interest in our work.
Sincerely yours,
Robert A Baan PhD

Dear Dr. Baan,

This statement is a valuable clarification of what the new IARC 2B classification for RFR covers,  but immediately raises the question -on what basis do you assume that less exposure (lower levels of RFR) are  automatically considered  'less harmful'?  When you look at SAR exposure levels of RFR that cause pathological leakage of the blood-brain barrier, for example, it is not true.   Lower exposures are shown to be more bioactive, thus potentially more harmful.  This appears to be true with respect to DNA damage and failure to repair, for induction of HSP and other measures of disruption of homeostasis and damage to biological tissues.

A linear, dose-response relationship for RFR bioeffects and adverse health effects has long been questioned.   In the case of both low-dose ionizing radiation and low-intensity non-ionizing radiation, many studies now show that biological effects do not hold to a linear, dose-response relationship for harm.   Recent studies point to serious effects from chronic, low-dose exposures to endocrine disrupters, and for other chemical toxins.  Recent studies show that chronic exposure to low-dose ionizing radiation and to low-intensity radiofrequency radiation are not 'less harmful' and a strict, linear dose-response relationship cannot be assumed to hold true.

Thus, there is little support to draw a conclusion that because "exposure levels for these other devices and exposure situations are so much lower than the exposure to someone who has a functioning cell phone against her/his ear, the risk will be considerably less (although the hazard still exists)."

As the recent paper by Vandenberg et al (2012) conclude:  "The concept of nonmonotonicity is an essential one for the field of environmental health science because when NMDRCs occur, the effects of low doses cannot be predicted by the effects observed at high doses. In addition, the finding that chemicals have adverse effects on animals and humans in the range of environmental exposures clearly indicates that low doses cannot be ignored."

No positive assertion of RFR safety can be made for chronic exposures at any level. Further, speculation that lower-dose NIER may be less harmful, or can be extrapolated from higher intensity exposures is not justified.  The public health consequences of guessing wrong, or, for the moment minimizing these low-intensity risks to health will be enormous and represent a preventable cause of unnecessary disease.  The rollout of wireless technologies in societies across the world, often creating involuntary and unavoidable RFR exposures at environmental levels of consequence to health, require a more cautionary approach.

Thank you for your continuing contributions in this area, and for engaging the public and decision-makers in this important discussion.

Living in a cave without all the waves

"electrohypersensitive persons" on Australian TV

The square of the town hall took on Saturday morning, looks like a television studio for an interview with Jean-Claude Gast by the host Rosie Kingham.

The lives of "women of the caves" is not a common story: the press and the French television channels have repeatedly reported the unusual decision of these two women forced to choose to live in length of years in the discomfort of a grotto of virgin waves all over the town of Saint-Julien-en-Beauchene (Hautes-Alpes).
Their resolve challenges with strength, describing himself as "electrohypersensitive" (a neologism brand new), they feel they have found that this parade for protection from electromagnetic fields harmful to their health.

The media coverage of this startling news today exceeds our borders, finding echoes to the antipodes, since Australian television has shifted in recent days, in the Beauchene.
For National Geographic, a team of four professionals in film came, accompanied by an interpreter.

"Show that this sensitivity does exist"

Director Rosie Kingham regularly presents a series of programs under the title "Taboo", sharing experience extremes experienced throughout the world. She felt that the news of Saint-Julien has its place. Regarding motivation, she says: "My wish is to get the message that this sensitivity still poorly understood, does exist. Should be that beyond a collective awareness, the company wants to address this problem. We hope our report will serve to relay this. The problem is international, but there is so far very few studies of physical phenomena. We met people who were suffering. One of them has insisted that she must constantly justify his attitude, while no one is able to explain what happens. But she claims to have no other choice, to the detriment of family life: it is the sacrifice!
"

Anne Bernadette and endure the seasons as they come, in the glow of candles and under heavy sweaters. One of them has just spent her third winter. Other solutions, other places were searched, without success so far.
The report has gathered the testimonies of the two people involved, their neighbors, representatives of the association IEHS (Inter electrohypersensitive), and the mayor of the commune.

The cave is located in the municipality. The message of the mayor, Jean-Claude Gast, is clear: "My position is that of an elected aware of suffering in boundary conditions. The problem is beyond my expertise, but I kept all the administrations concerned. I wish now that the state recognizes these symptoms. "
