Canadian Medical Association Journal reports Health Canada's wireless limits are "A Disaster to Public Health"

OTTAWA, May 7, 2015 /CNW/ - The Canadian Medical Association Journal today published a scathing condemnation of Health Canada's safety guidelines for cell phones and Wifi.

The Journal (CMAJ) interviewed multiple international experts in radiation and cancer, who warn that the microwave levels allowed in Canadian classrooms, residences and workplaces are, "a disaster to public health."

One scientist said that given the overwhelming evidence that wireless radiation is harmful, Health Canada staff are either, "unwilling or not competent to make evaluation of the current literature."

The article points out that Canada's Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health recently completed three days of hearings on Canada's safety guidelines, and sent federal scientists back to the office to re-examine 140 recent studies that show wireless radiation emitted by cell phones and WiFi can cause harm.

One oncologist interviewed by the CMAJ said that Canada's safety guidelines for wireless radiation need to be "urgently revised" due to the obvious risk of cancer.

The CMAJ article revealed that James McNamee, who wrote Health Canada's safety code, has also co-authored academic papers with scientists who openly accept payments from the wireless industry.

"That Canada's wireless safety code is out of date and mired in conflict of interest is no longer a question it's a fact," said Frank Clegg, CEO of Canadians For Safe Technology (C4ST).

"We're hoping the Parliamentary Standing Committee will have strong recommendations to fix it," said Clegg.

These studies, we believe, reinforce the evidence that radio frequency fields are not just a possible human carcinogen but a probable human carcinogen, putting it in the category 2A. It would be impossible to ignore such a hazard in regulatory approaches.

The California Medical Association - Wireless Resolution

Please send the resolution below to people you know in the medical field.

All medical groups should be adopting similar resolutions and working on figuring out what precautionary levels should look like.  Setting safety limits should not be left to engineers as has been done for the last 60+ years.  The FCC must adopt safety limits recommended by a qualified organization so medical organizations have the potential to have a huge influence - their recommendations could be the ones adopted.  Previously the only organizations involved in making recommendations were engineering organizations.  There is certainly enough information about non-thermal biological effects to set initial precautionary limits almost immediately so that public health and safety are better protected.  Then, a review of additional research can be completed every couple of years and the levels adjusted again as more data becomes available.

In the meantime, hospitals, clinics, and medical care facilities should become wireless-free zones since they serve a population that is far more vulnerable to environmental pollution because their health is already compromised in some manner.

C4ST has been successful getting action in Canada.  "(T)he Parliamentary Health Committee (HESA) voted on Feb 24th, 2015 to support the motion from Liberal Health Critic MP Dr. Hedy Fry to host 3 days of hearings on Safety Code 6. The 10 member Health Committee is empowered to study and report on all matters relating to the mandate, management, and operation of Health Canada."  Please see to find out more and sign up to receive their updates so you can help push the committee if C4ST needs support.  It is worth visiting their website ( just so you can see the many areas in which they are making progress.  Perhaps you will be able to use their successes to spur change in your community.

                               CMA 2014   HOD Resolutions Adopted

                                                 Resolution 107- 14

                                          Date Adopted Dec 7, 2014

Resolved 1    That CMA supports efforts to reevaluate microwave safety exposure levels associated with wireless communication devices, including consideration of adverse non-thermal biologic and health effects from non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation used in wireless communications; and be it further

Resolved 2    That CMA support efforts to implement new safety exposure limits for wireless devices to levels that do not cause human or environmental harm based on scientific research.

Wireless Communications Public Safety Standards Reevaluation

Introduced by Cindy Lee Russell, M.D. AND Ken Yew, M.D.

Whereas there are over 6 billion active cell phones worldwide and dependence of wireless communication networks is rapidly expanding including cell phones, cell towers, wireless routers for home use, medical devices and utility smart meters; and (1)

Whereas scientists are increasingly identifying EMF from wireless devices as a new form of environmental pollution with a growing body of peer reviewed scientific evidence finding significant adverse health and biologic effects on living organisms with exposure to low levels of non-ionizing microwaves currently approved and used in wireless communication, and

Whereas peer reviewed research has demonstrated adverse biological effects of wireless EMF including single and double stranded DNA breaks, creation of reactive oxygen species, immune dysfunction, cognitive processing effects, stress protein synthesis in the brain, altered brain development, sleep and memory disturbances, ADHD, abnormal behavior, sperm dysfunction, and brain tumors; and  (2-55)

Whereas there is a long latency period of years to decades to study and identify adverse health effects such as brain cancer, neurodegenerative damage and autism; and

Whereas children's brains are developmentally immature until adolescence, their skulls are thinner and the brain is considerably more vulnerable to toxin exposure , and (23,24)

Whereas the World Health Organization in 2011 designated wireless communications including cell phones to be a possible carcinogenic, and (63)

Whereas many scientists, researchers, public health officials and agencies conclude that wireless electromagnetic frequency (EMF) standards established by the Federal Communications Commission are outdated as they are based only on heat effects which damage to the organism and not biological effects of non –ionizing EMF microwave radiation which are scientifically demonstrated at levels hundreds of times less than current safety exposure limits and thus current standards are  inadequate to protect public health; and (49-51)(57)

Whereas the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2013 has asked for reassessment of  exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields limits and policies  that  protect children's health and well-being  throughout their lifetimes and reflect current use patterns (58)

RESOLVED; that the CMA understands that  existing public safety limits for microwave EMF devices are outdated and inadequate to protect public health  thus endorses efforts of the Federal Communications Commission to reevaluate its safety standards to include consideration of adverse non thermal biologic and health effects from non ionizing electromagnetic radiation used in wireless communications; and be it further

RESOLVED; that the CMA supports efforts to implement microwave safety exposure limits to levels that do not cause human or environmental harm based on scientific research, and be it further

RESOLVED; that the CMA set up a task force to determine adequate precautionary recommendations for the use of cell phones and wireless devices for schools and children

Worries about exposure to EM-RF fields were recently raised before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health, which heard three days of submissions from international medical experts, advocacy groups and industry players.
Some critics said the panel's report overlooked 140 studies that showed a possible link between EM-RF exposure and some types of cancer, as well as other health effects, including electromagnetic hypersensitivity.

Which frequencies are the most noxious?

Excerpt from recent e-chats with retired Canadian Armed Forces captain Jerry Flynn who spent 22 of his 26 years in the military in the arcane fields of Electronic Warfare (EW) and Signals Intelligence (SIGINT). At the zenith of his career, he was the Executive Officer and Operations Officer at one of Canada's largest and most sensitive intelligence-gathering stations, where for two years he directed some 200-plus specially-trained radio operators and technicians.
Jerry's in his 80s and has been working full-time for 8 years warning people about the great dangers of wireless. See his great Powerpoint presentations:

Hi Andre,

In one of my slides it shows that frequencies between 1 GHz and 5 GHz are of most interest to the militaries for they penetrate more deeply all organ systems of the body and therefore put all organs at risk. These frequencies are especially harmful to the brain, central nervous system and immune system.
From a military perspective I can tell you that the most harmful modulations to use against humans - or any living thing - is pulsed, of which there are various kinds. AM or Amplitude Modulation too is harmful. The thing is, the human body, which is a vanishingly small teensie, weensie DC electrical system is easily shocked by each and every pulse or spike of AM signal. Think of these pulses/spikes being jackhammers. While the human immune systems recognizes these pulses as alien and tries to protect the body/brain against them, they body simply becomes too exhausted and can no longer fight off the pulses/spikes.
.Frequencies in the 1-5 GHz range are 'carrier' frequencies, not the 'information carrying' or modulation frequencies.
Frequencies in the 1-100 KHz range would be the modulated frequencies imposed upon the carrier frequencies. It is only when one appreciates the frequency of the human brain (0.5-30 Hz) and other organs of the body that one begins to understand how harmful 'modulated' frequencies in this range can be to humans. That's why, for example, TETRA phones are so dangerous:  their carrier frequencies are in the order of, typically, 400 MHz, but their modulation frequencies (which carry the 'information' are in or around 17 Hz, which is smack in the middle of a brain's range of frequencies.
Were you able to view Amplitude Modulation on an oscilloscope, you'd see extremely sharp spikes of constantly varying heights, both above and below the centre or 'carrier' frequency). Let's say your favourite AM station is AM 980, the 980 actually means 980 KHz (or thousands of hertz). Human ears cannot hear any of the AM carrier frequencies because they are too high for the human hear. Frequencies we hear are called Audio Frequencies, which run from about 10 Hz up to just 20 KHz. So, the carrier frequency, in this case, 980 Hz is modulated (or has had piggy-backed on top of it the audio frequencies your ears can hear, be it someone talking, singing, orchestras, whistling, etc.). Your table radio simply de-modulates the signal it receives, meaning it STRIPS away the AM 'carrier' frequency,   leaving only the AUDIO frequency which your ear can and does hear.
The same principle applies to your FM radio band, only FM stands for Frequency Modulation and the frequencies shown on your radio (all of which are, again, simply carrier frequencies) run from 87.5 MHz to 106.5 MHz (M meaning mega or millions of hertz). FM modulation means that the carrier frequency's shape is not altered in the vertical direction but in the horizontal direction, ie., much like an accordion squishes in and stretches out, if you know what I mean? In both AM and FM radio, your radio receiver removes or strips away the AM or FM frequencies to which your radio dial is tuned, leaving only the audio frequency that you can hear and listen to.

Leo Cashman at DAMS <>  wrote:

Jerry Flynn knows exactly what he is talking about and he is making some important point that most people don't undertand very well. To a first approximation the intensity of the carrier wave is an indication of how harmful the wave is, but that is only an easy approximation, something you can measure on your RF test meter. But what you can't easily test, the pulsing, adds to the frequencies that are actually in the wave, making it hold lots of other frequencies and increasing the biological impact of the wave, the radiation. And then the modulation - putting the information onto the pulsed carrier wave, whether by amplitude modulation or by frequency modulation - adds more actual frequencies onto the wave, and very often those modulating frequencies are very biologically active in their impacts, mostly detimental, on the human or animal's body. College math majors take a coursse called Fourier Analysis in which they learn how to analyze a function into its frequency components, to see what and how much frequencies it is made out of. The "Fourier transform" transforms the orginal function into a graph of what frequencies the function is made out of and how much of each on there it. This is all extremely relevant to electronics and radio and microwave technology as well as to some areas of math.
Which frequencies are there in, say, a Wi-Fi radiation, and which organs do they affect? It depends on what the modulation information is trying to say, and that changes all the time. But the results are not good and spewing this kind of pulsed, modulated radiation into our human environment all the time is recklessly dangerous. it is very stupid and ignorant. I do not use a cell phone, a cordless phone or Wi-Fi and it is  because I know something about these matters and I don't want to get a brain tumor or spend my last decades in the Alzheimer's ward.
