Smartphones are addictive and should carry health warning, say academics
A study by the University of Derby and published in the International Journal of Cyber Behaviour, Psychology and Learning found that 13% of participants in the study were addicted, with the average user spending 3.6 hours per day on their device.
The majority of participants said their smartphone use caused distraction from many aspects of their lives, including employment, hobbies and studies.

Telus buys 15 MHz spectrum

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - March 6, 2015) - TELUS (TSX:T)(NYSE:TU) today announced it has secured spectrum licenses equating to a national average of 15 MHz in Canada's recently concluded AWS-3 auction. These licenses, which were acquired for $1.5 billion, are very complementary to the 16.1 MHz of national AWS spectrum TELUS purchased in 2008, which is now the foundation of the company's world-class wireless network. AWS-3 spectrum is well-suited for delivering both coverage and added capacity in urban and rural environments, and TELUS expects to incorporate it into the natural evolution of the company's existing network, accelerating TELUS' ability to bring new devices to market and deliver economies of scale on wireless infrastructure investments.
"The purchase and deployment of this spectrum will ensure that TELUS continues to operate one of the fastest and most reliable wireless networks in the world, consistent with our number one corporate priority of putting customers first," said TELUS Executive Chair Darren Entwistle. "TELUS has invested $3.8 billion in spectrum-related costs since the 2008 AWS auction, and has invested more than $32 billion in technology across the country since 2000. Thanks to our strong balance sheet, we are able to increase our spectrum position while simultaneously supporting our 2015 Capex targets as well as our multi-year share purchase and dividend growth programs, which will continue uninterrupted. Given the significant investment made by U.S. carriers TELUS is optimistic that the AWS-3 handset and network ecosystem will develop at an accelerated pace, allowing TELUS to quickly put this spectrum to use for our customers."

Last year we added 357,000 postpaid wireless customers, and smartphone users now represent 81 per cent of our base. Today, we provide 4G LTE to 89 per cent of Canada's population, up from 80 per cent a year ago. This spectrum will allow us to enhance LTE coverage, particularly in urban areas, adding much-needed capacity for our more than 8.1 million wireless customers. Consistent with our commitment to rural customers, TELUS' network todayreaches 99 per cent of the Canadian population."

Quebec City's fire department says Hydro-Québec has been too quick to remove smart meters from the scenes of fires where faulty wiring may be an issue.
The fire department says the meters are sometimes gone before investigators can look at them to find out whether their wires might have been damaged, which could lead to a short circuit and a fire.
"A fire is considered a crime scene and at a crime scene evidence should be left alone," said France Voiselle, a department spokeswoman.
