WIND TURBINES: London surgeon Robert McMurtry is concerned about the noise

When London surgeon Robert McMurtry decided to build a house, he wanted to go green -- geothermal heating, solar panels for hot water and a wind turbine for electricity.

But when he started reading about wind turbines, the former dean of medicine at the University of Western Ontario said he had a change of heart.

"I thought, 'Holy Toledo, there are some issues here.' "

Dozens of wind turbines have already been built or proposed in Southwestern Ontario, as Queen's Park tries to wean Ontario off dirty coal-fired electricity plants and reduce its reliance on nuclear power.

McMurtry is calling for health studies into the wind turbine farms popping up across Ontario with backing by the provincial government.


With towers nearly 100 metres tall, and blades half that long, the turbines can be an imposing sight, even from afar.

"At minimum, they should be doing a survey of people around wind farms and getting a sense of how many people are complaining of problems," he said.

"If there is enough evidence, they should mount a formal epidemiological study," McMurtry said.

In the U.S. and Western Europe especially, where wind farms are more advanced than in Canada, complaints abound about the low-frequency sound the giant windmills generate.

In Canada, Ontario is one of the only provinces with regulations governing wind farms, requiring a noise-impact assessment for areas up to 1,000 metres from the turbine.

McMurtry is concerned about health complaints he's heard from people living near wind farms, including sleep disturbance from the noise of the giant turbine blades.

"Once you have sleep disturbance for a few days, you aren't going to be feeling well," he said.

Last week, the province announced it's backing six new wind farm projects, including three in Chatham-Kent, expected to create 558 jobs. Total investment in the new farms is expected to reach $1.32 billion.

McMurtry, who has taken his concerns to Ontario Energy Minister George Smitherman, said it's going to be an uphill battle to convince people to look hard at the health implications because turbines have become closely associated with green energy.

"It has got an iconic, symbolic status that carries a lot of weight and there is a very powerful, worldwide lobby group behind it," he said.

McMurtry said turbines smaller than the ones being installed may be better than the monsters now going up.

"Harness the wind safely. Let's look at other alternatives. There are better, smarter options," he said.

Monica Elmes, of the Chatham-Kent Wind Action Group, opposed to the wind farms, said the turbines will be an unreliable, intermittent source of electricity and a waste of taxpayers' money.

"All Ontario residents are truly the losers in this scam," Elmes said in an e-mail.

Wind turbines generate sound waves, both audible and inaudible (infrasound) and they produce dirty electricity if not properly filtered.  People who live within 700 meters of these turbines are getting sick in Germany, France, UK, Wisconsin, Nova Scotia, Ontario . . .

More than 100 university professors in Germany signed a manifesto in 1998 stating the following:


"More and more people are describing their lives as unbearable when they are directly exposed to the acoustic and optical effects of wind farms. There are reports of people being signed off sick and unfit for work, there is a growing number of complaints about symptoms such as pulse irregularities and states of anxiety, which are known to be from the effects of infrasound [sound frequencies below the normal audible limit]."

And the French National Academy of Medicine (2006) concludes:

 "People living near the towers, the heights of which vary from 10 to 100 meters, sometimes complain of functional disturbances similar to those observed in syndromes of chronic sound trauma . . .  The sounds emitted by the blades being low frequency, which therefore travel easily and vary according to the wind . . .  constitute a permanent risk for the people exposed to them . . .  . . . sound levels 1 km from an installation occasionally exceeded allowable limits. . . the Academy recommends halting wind turbine construction closer than 1.5 km from residences."

Measurements in Ripley Ontario found high levels of dirty electricity once the wind turbines became operational and high levels of ground current coming into homes through plumbing.  Three families had to leave their homes because of ill health.

With our rush for renewable energy we haven't (yet again) done our homework.  It may be good for the environment (and some questions the claims made about wind energy) but if it isn't good for human health why place these large wind turbines 400-600 meters near homes????  Can't we design something that is good for the environment that doesn't adversely affect our health?

Green bulbs undergo safety testing

Yellowhead County will continue to hand out CFL light bulbs unless they are proven to be harmful by Health Canada.

Health Canada is currently testing certain types of CFL bulbs following a British health warning that some of the bulbs can emit higher than normal UV radiation levels.

"At this point we haven't reacted — we'll wait and see," said county Chief Administrative Officer Jack Ramme.

The county has been giving out light bulbs as part of Project Porchlight's initiative to equip homes with the energy-efficient bulbs.

Officials from the UK Health Protection Agency singled out the corkscrew or tube-like design, the kind the county is giving away, as the bulb most likely to give off levels of UV radiation, similar to the harmful rays given off by the sun.

Health Canada recommends that CFL bulbs not be used in areas where people spend more than an hour a day within 30 centimetres of the bulb.

Health Canada's Phillip Laroche said in a statement that the agency is currently testing CFL bulbs to measure ultraviolet emissions and electromagnetic field exposure levels. Results of the tests are expected to be released in the fall, he added.

Thirty brands of CFL bulbs are being tested — six samples of each model, Laroche said.

Laroche added although the bulk of scientific studies to date have not identified any health-related issues, Health Canada has decided to test the bulbs in order to acquire reliable technical data. If the tests establish a reason for concern, actions will be taken to force manufacturers to correct the situation, he said.

Bruce Cran, president of the Consumer's Association of Canada said his organization has received numerous calls about CFL bulbs.

"We've had a lot of reports about explosions."

Laroche countered, saying bulbs do not explode at or near the end of their life. He said they may emit smoke or an odour, or make a popping sound. People should also check the plastic base of the bulb for discolouration, charring or deformities. A smoking or smelly bulb does not present a shock or fire hazard, Laroche added.

Cran said the disposal of these type of bulbs has caused problems in some areas of Canada.

"We've had hundreds of complaints over the last few months. People have been telling us they've bought [a package] of five and only four will work," said Cran.

He said the federal government in deciding to go with CFL bulbs as a replacement for incandescent bulbs was a mistake.

"To head off in the direction of using only those bulbs was a bad mistake," Cran said.

Cran claimed there were alternative light sources to CFLs that the federal government could have used.

He said he doesn't use CFL bulbs in his house anymore.

The federal government has mandated that incandescent bulbs will no longer be available after 2012.

You might be interested in the response Global TV is getting to the CFL bulbs for two shows that aired this month (January).  The reaction to the CFL bulbs, what they emit, how they make people feel, and the fact that by 2012 people in the US and Canada won't be able to buy incandescent bulbs is getting a lot of people upset.  Similar bans of energy inefficient light bulbs exist for other countries.

Global TV did a special on the CFL bulbs and more than 400 people contacted them from across Canada.  Some have removed the bulbs and their health problems have gone away, especially skin problems, headaches, and fatigue.

Global TV air their first aired show (two 8-minute) segments on January 4th (still in their archives, see link below).  Had a great response with testimonials etc.

They then aired a second and different show on January 18th.  Once again a huge response.  They have decided to air one of the previous shows (I think) again on February 8th at 6:30 pm (EST).

After the second show they had a live blog and will do that again for their next show. 

The CFL bulbs and the government insisting that we all need to use them by 2012 is helping us get the message to the public that dirty electricity and other forms of radio frequency are bad for your health.

Dr. Magda Havas is an expert in her field. She tests all sorts of bulbs by measuring the power quality and radio frequencies that different bulbs give off. She measures for dirty electricity.

While the new fluorescent light bulbs may be environmentally friendly, the concern is about how much dirty electricity they're emitting.

Havas says that a lot of people are responding negatively to these light bulbs. "They get headaches, they get other body aches and pains. Some of them have difficulty sleeping if they're tired, some of them have mood disorders."

But all of this is controversial - scientists do not agree if people can suffer from what's called electromagnetic hypersensitivity. Another way of saying that people are getting sick from the electronic devices they use - and the stuff the devices give off...

Swedish professor joins Kingswinford anti-mobile phone mast protesters

ANXIOUS Kingswinford campaigners fighting to remove mobile phone masts from near their homes have taken their battle to Europe.

Protesters marched to the High Acres Base Station with MEP Liz Lynne, who pledged to do all she could to see the equipment moved from the top of a former water tower at the summit of a hill.

Also joining them, all the way from Stockholm, was Professor Olle Johansson, who made a special visit from the Karolinska Institute in the Swedish capital, where he has established himself as one of the world's leading authorities on electro-magnetic radiation.

Since masts started to be erected at the site in 2001, 14 near neighbours have died of cancer and a further 20 people have contracted the disease.

The masts, erected by Orange, O2, T Mobile and Vodafone, have produced what US scientist Dr George Carlo called "the worst levels of this type of radiation in the world".

Some scientists, including Dr Carlo and Prof Johansson, now believe that the type of non-ionizing radition emitted from masts may have a damaging effect on health, although the mobile phone industry continues to claim levels of exposure are not dangerous.

Sutton Coldfield housewife Eileen O'Connor, now a leading figure with the Radiation Research Trust, also joined activists at the top of the hill.

She contracted breast cancer shortly after a mobile phone mast was erected near to her home in the Wishaw area, and found that there was an apparent cluster in the village.

Mrs O'Connor said European MPs were doing "brilliant work" in highlighting the protestors' cause.

Wendy Baggott, co-ordinator and trustee of the High Acres Base Station Mast Action Group, said there were 18 antennae and eight dishes at the base station.

She said: "The surrounding land is a public open space and our children are supposed to play here. How many more masts can they put up, and what effect is it having on our health?"

Liberal Democrat MEP Mrs Lynne, who is co-chair of MEPs Against Cancer in the European Parliament, said: "It's obviously a cluster and we would like to know why."

Prof Johansson said such base stations at least needed better shielding to protect neighbours from microwave exposure, but claimed that his arguments were being taken on board.

He called for an urgent reduction of exposure level.

Children shocked by stray voltage

Several children shocked by stray voltage – just two weeks after a second dog was electrocuted - has finally prompted Toronto Hydro to mobilize 600 workers to inspect its aging street-level infrastructure.

The recent zapping, involving 3 to 5 children from Regent Park/Duke of York Junior Public school, happened yesterday near the corner of Dundas and Sumach Sts.

Several students on a field trip, told their teachers they received a shock as they walked along the sidewalk, a letter home to parents from the school's principal stated. Staff determined that each of the students had stepped on a metal hydro plate, known as a handwell.

TDSB officials said the children appeared uninjured but cautioned parents to take them to their family doctor just in case.

Hydro was called and inspected the area.

In the wake of the student shock, hydro announced it will ramp up efforts to check for stray voltage across the city.

"All available resources are being assigned to finding and fixing equipment that poses a safety hazard," said David O'Brien, president and CEO, Toronto Hydro Corporation. "This operation will involve more than 600 employees, and is a 24-hour-a-day, 7-day-a-week operation.

"We are committed to fixing this problem. All of our resources will be dedicated to this, in the interests of public safety."

The utility had been conducting mobile inspections in the wake of two dogs being electrocuted in the city's west end, near Dundas and Keele Sts. in November and January. Dogs were also shocked, but not killed, in several incidents across the city.

Toronto Hydro investigates after child shocked by handwell

TORONTO - Toronto Hydro is pulling out all the stops in its stray-voltage crackdown, after at least one child suffered an electric shock this week, following incidents in which two dogs died.

David O'Brien, the president and CEO of Toronto Hydro, said Friday he would assign every available worker to a handwell replacement project starting Saturday morning.

A handwell is a metal utility plate on the sidewalk.

"This operation will involve more than 600 employees and is a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week operation," O'Brien said.

"We're going to get it fixed."

Reports of an incident involving five children forced the utility to step up its effort.

On Wednesday, five elementary schoolchildren were playing together near a downtown intersection when they were shocked, according to a letter sent home with students, although Toronto Hydro would only confirm one child was affected.

When the school contacted Toronto Hydro, a crew identified a source of stray voltage in a nearby metal handwell.

Two dogs have died since November and there have been several more reports of non-lethal shocks.

Since November, the utility has received 140 reports of potential stray voltage.

Protecting Bees From Mobile Phone Radiation

Bees have been going missing by the millions, leaving their hives never to come back, in what the experts have termed "Colony Collapse Disorder". Speculation is rife over what may be the cause of the trouble. Toxins from genetically modified crops and pesticides are prime suspects, but the question has also been raised, whether electromagnetic radiation - such as the mobile phone signals that cover most of the globe by now - may be to blame.

This latter hypothesis seems to get more credence from a report of three years ago from Germany, which Paul Doyon has translated into English.

"Will Some Device Save The Bees from Bee-Colony Collapse Disorder?"

Hobbyist bee-keeper Sigfried Vogel from Hüttung, Germany has discovered a way to safely shield his precious little honey makers.

An old truck has been until recently the domicile of a total of seven bee hives. Siegfried Vogel (in picture) has lost four of his bee colonies in the past year - those which were located behind wooden shielding on his truck. His son Reinhold has had better luck: He still owns his three colonies of bees which are located behind and protected by a portion of aluminum shielding on the same truck. Hence, Siegfried Vogel is now advising all beekeepers to protect their colonies of bees from mobile-phone radiation with aluminum shielding.

Does this radiation, which is emitted from the mobile phone masts and between microwave relay stations and to which many residents are also exposed, also pose a danger to animals? Siegfried Vogel from the Selbitz area of Hüttung believes the radiation emitted from the multitude of surrounding mobile phone masts is responsible for the loss of his four bee colonies during the past year.

Mr. Vogel is not alone in his assessment. The loss of birds has also been suspected as being caused by the mobile phone radiation. Recently, there have been numerous reports on the Internet concerning the impairment and loss of bees and messenger pigeons. The authors of these articles are attributing this loss to mobile phone mast radiation. The loss of birds is also spurring fears that the whole of nature may be at risk due to the ever-increasing electromagnetic radiation from mobile phones and the like.

HÜTTUNG - most people who enjoy a spread of sweet honey on bread at breakfast probably never think of the immense work bees perform to collect enough nectar from the pollen of plants. During each flight, a bee collects 50 millgrams of nectar - that is equivalent to 50 thousandth of a gram. To produce a kilogram of honey, the small hard working insects must visit between 3 and 5 million flowers and plants.

The bees are however not only important for satisfying the taste buds of honey-loving humans. These insects are also a dire necessity for all of nature, since a multitude of plant species rely on the small creatures for pollination and hence the continuation of their species.

During evolution (the development and change of the entire animal and plant world over millions of years) a partnership of extreme importance developed between the bees and a multitude of plant species.

"Without bees, many plant species would simply face extinction," stresses Siegfried Vogel from Hüttung, who in his early youth gained his first experiences in beekeeping.

After retiring, and now at the age of 76, Mr. Vogel has enjoyed 15 successful years of honey production. He was housing his bee colonies inside an old wooden truck and until a year ago the beekeeper had four bee colonies in hives behind wooden planks on the truck.

This winter Mr. Vogel witnessed the disappearance of all four of his bee hives. The bees had met a tragic and mysterious fate.

Siegfried Vogel believes microwave radiation from mobile phone masts is responsible for the loss of his bees. Vogel explained that the microwave radiation is coming onto his property from four directions. There are three mobile phone masts in Selbitz, three more in Sellanger, and recently a new mast was erected in Leupoldsgrün, adding to an increasing level of ambient background microwave radiation infecting the area.

Our newspaper tested the mobile phone reception in this area and found it to be "good" to "very good."

Vogel offers as evidence - that mobile phone masts have caused the demise of his bee colonies - the fact that his son's colonies, which were placed behind aluminum shielding, have survived. (Aluminum is known to block microwave radiation.)

Since all their bee colonies were equally protected from cold weather with polystyrene insulation in the trailer, Siegfried Vogel concludes that the aluminium surrounding his sons beehives must be shielding them from the radiation from mobile phone masts.

Mr. Vogel, who is a passionate hobbyist and tinkerer, continued to experiment in his workshop towards finding a solution for protecting the bees.

By holding two electrodes, connected to a voltage meter, into the air and adjusting the meter's sensitivity to 200 millivolts he gets a constantly varying readout. If he then touches the electrodes with each hand, the meter readout suddenly doubles. As Vogel explains, this simple experiment shows that the human body works as an antenna. In another experiment, he holds the two electrodes between two magnets and the voltage meter readout drops back to near zero. According to Vogel, this works with permanents magnets and electromagnets.

Vogel's results: One can protect oneself and one's bees with metal and magnetic shielding. Thus, Vogel imagines appropriate protective screening solutions not only for bee hives but also for human and animals habitats.

"We cannot stand our ground against the monopoly of the mobile telecommunication industry, but in this way perhaps we can protect ourselves," added Siegfried Vogel.

The beekeeper plans to continue working with his son's bee colonies. He also wants to provide aluminum shielding for bees in a nearby orchard. Siegfried Vogel wishes to exchange experiences with other beekeepers in the region. Prospective customers can contact him by telephone.

What I want to know is... how do you protect the bees once they are out in the fields? They go very far to collect don't they? I'm not a beekeeper so I don't see how to protect them once they are out and about.

    When I sent WEEP news last night I was not aware that the (British) Sunday Times were publishing a major story today about the problem of bees dying.  I believe that this subject is so important that it should again be reported by WEEP news.  The article (below) is very good, with the exception of, a suggested cause of why bees are dying.  If the reporter had examined some of the scientific data which links microwave radiation and harm to honey bees, he may have presented a much stronger case for electro magnetic radiation being a major cause of bees dying.

    I have attached three documents which point the blame strongly at electro magnetic radiation.  Please pass this information to environmental groups, students and the press.

    The cover story of today's Sunday Times Magazine is the Colony Collapse problem with bees, and it also describes similar problems with bumble bees worldwide.

    There is a mention, although only a small one, that the problem may be due to mobile phone and other radiation.

    The article says there may be less than 8 years to go before pollination by bees is almost non-existent and there will be real difficulties in agriculture, as there already are with some fruit tree crops.

    Plight of the humble bee

    Native British bees are dying out — and with them will go flora, fauna and one-third of our diet. We may have less than a decade to save them and avert catastrophe. So why is nothing being done?

    Midwinter. In a garden not far from the sea in Plymouth, there is a splash of pale sunlight and a sound both familiar and strange. Familiar, because if we close our eyes and think of English gardens it's the sound that fills our heads. Strange, because now it should be silent.

    The drone of a bee.

    It is a buff-tailed bumble, Bombus terrestris, a worker pottering among late-flowering fuchsias, heathers and mahonias like the ghost of summers past. All the textbooks say it should be dead. Only queens overwinter in holes in the ground. Yet here it is, at 200 wing-beats a second, energetically hawking the beds for nectar. And it is not alone. The man in whose garden it flits, Dr Mick Hanley, a lecturer in terrestrial ecology at Plymouth University, has recorded them in December and January all the way along the south coast as far east as Ramsgate. Others have found them as far north as Shropshire, Leicestershire and even North Wales.

    Weird, you might think, but not something we should worry about. But aberrant behaviour in nature, especially when it happens suddenly, is rarely a sign of systemic good health. A bee in winter is no more proof of a thriving ecosystem than a flake of snow is disproof of global warming. The world is going haywire. If the very worst scenarios are to be believed, then the Plymouth bee is an early pathfinder en route not just to its own Armageddon but to our own.

    Think of summer. Meadows and gardens daubed with so much colour it looks as if some giant hand has gone berserk with a paintbrush. Now expunge that picture and think of another. This time the giant hand has mislaid every pigment save brown and olive. There are no blooms, no insects, no birds. No visible wildlife of any kind. No fruit. No sound other than the mechanistic din of humankind harvesting fungi and the approaching cries of battle.

    The first picture is a poetic fiction, a received vision of England as it never was, an idyllic land of apple-cheeked rustics singing in harmony with a bountiful Nature. The second is a piece of bleak futurology that assumes the process of environmental degradation will be irreversible, leaving hollow-cheeked starvelings to follow the rest of the world's fauna across the Styx. The creature that links the two visions — by its abundance in the first and absence from the second — is the same that now buzzes unseasonably among the dripping foliage of our winter gardens. The bee.

    "The" bee, of course, is a gross oversimplification. There are many species of bumble as well as of honeybee. Or there were. In the bounteous days of teeming hedgerows and fields of clover, Britain had 25 kinds of bumble, all merrily gathering nectar and pollinating plants and trees. Three of these already have vanished, and seven more are in the government's official Biodiversity Action Plan (Uk Bap) as priorities for salvation.

    It's the same right across Europe, and the reasons everywhere are the same — changes in agricultural practice that have replaced historic mixed farmscapes with heavily industrialised monocultures in which wild animals and plants are about as welcome as jackals in a pie factory. Insects in particular have been targets of intense chemical warfare. We are, at the eleventh hour, learning from our mistakes, but patching nature back together again is exponentially more difficult than blowing it apart.

    Most people do now get the point about honeybees. Following the multiple crises that continue to empty the hives — foulbrood, varroa mites, viral diseases, dysfunctional immune systems, and now the mysterious but globally devastating colony-collapse disorder (CCD) — it is understood that the true value of Apis mellifera lies not so much in the sticky stuff that gives our favourite insect its name as in the service it provides as a pollinator of farms and gardens. If you add retailers' profit to farm gate prices, their value to the UK economy is in the region of £1 billion a year, and 35% of our diet is directly dependent on them. It is an equation of stark simplicity. No pollination: no crops. There is nothing theoretical about it. The reality is in (or, more accurately, not in) the hives. The US has lost 70% of its honeybee colonies over the past two winters. Losses in the UK currently are running at 30% a year — up from just 6% in 2003.

    But fewer people realise that bumbles, too, are important not just to some remote, bug-ridden process called "ecology", of interest only to bearded men in anoraks. Growers of beans, oilseed rape and fruit especially have reason to feel alarm at their disappearance. So vital are they to the productivity of the fields, and so lethal the pressures on them, that farmers are having to import captive-bred reinforcements, many of them southern-European species raised in Slovakia. The total annual influx is reckoned at some 100,000 nests, each containing a queen and 200 workers, priced around £50 a time.

    As the example of honeybees shows, this is a strategy of literally incalculable risk. International trade in honeybees has spread pests and diseases that imminently threaten their survival. In November 2007 the then food-and-farming minister, Lord Rooker, declared in the House of Lords that if things went on as they were, the honeybee in the UK would be extinct within 10 years. The situation since then has worsened, so at the best estimate the 10 years have shrunk to eight.

    For bumbles, too, time is running out, and nobody knows whether the introduction of alien bees will delay the end or bring it closer. The signs are not encouraging. In the US, wild-bumblebee numbers have collapsed dramatically since the 1990s — they have been killed by parasites carried by European species brought in to pollinate greenhouse crops such as tomatoes and peppers.

    "There is a high likelihood of interaction between wild and commercially reared bees at flowers," says Dave Goulson, professor of biological sciences at the University of Stirling and a world expert on bumblebees. This creates the ideal conditions for what ecologists call "pathogen spillover". Nor is disease the only risk. There is also the "grey-squirrel effect", in which native species are driven out by more aggressive foreigners. This is happening in Japan, where, ironically, imports of Bombus terrestris — the same bumblebee now humming in southern England — have escaped and are outbreeding the locals. And it may already be happening in the UK.

    As in Japan, the aliens are better foragers and breed more rapidly than the natives, whose health and territory they threaten, while there is no guarantee that the immigrants themselves will not be poleaxed by local infections. This is bad news for more than just the bees themselves. In the complex world of inter-species relationships developed over millennia, small changes can have massive effects. In addition to his general theory of relativity, Albert Einstein had a specific theory about the relativity of man and bee. "If the bee disappears off the surface of the globe," he is supposed to have said, "then man would only have four years of life left."

    If other scientists are more cautious, it is only in terms of the timescale.

    On the face of it, the midwinter appearance of Bombus terrestris looks encouraging — a harbinger of the all-year summers that optimists look forward to. But this is precisely the problem. Contrary to what one might expect, says Goulson, a warming climate will not set the hedgerows buzzing. "Bumblebees evolved in the Himalayas. They are unusual among insects in that they don't like warm weather." Their thick fur coat is an aid to survival in a cool climate but an energy-sapping body-broiler in the heat. "This is why the southern hemisphere has no bumblebees."

    Once upon a time, for example, the great yellow bumblebee, Bombus distinguendus, which thrives in the cold and wet, was common throughout Britain. Now it has been driven so far northwards that it occurs on the mainland only within half a mile of the extreme north coast of Caithness and Sutherland. "So," says Goulson, "it can go no further. It is probably doomed as a result of climate change." Other species, too, are shrinking into local redoubts. The shrill carder bee, Bombus sylvarum, is now limited to the Somerset Levels, Salisbury Plain and the Thames Estuary, where much of its habitat is on brownfield sites and impossible to protect. Since 1980, the formerly common large garden bumblebee, Bombus ruderatus, has been recorded at fewer than 10 sites in the UK.

    And so it goes on. As the entire insect world is being forced inexorably northwards, it may be hoped that other pollinators from southern Europe may be sucked into the vacuum behind them. Hoped, but not expected. Bumblebees are not like migrating birds — they do not fly for hundreds of miles between remote habitats. They are more like mammals, needing a continuous corridor of suitable habitats to move through. Without a linked route up through France, they are more likely to die out where they are.

    Even if new species did arrive, they would be unable to take on all the work of the old. Many bumblebees, including all those under threat, are specialist feeders that depend upon — and pollinate — particular groups of plants. By the miracle of evolution, some species have developed long tongues, with which they can reach the nectar of deep-throated flowers. Without them, the plants could not reproduce. The incomers can offer no solution: their tongues are too short. The first casualties of the bumblebee exodus, therefore, will be some of the best-loved British wild flowers such as foxgloves, irises, red clover, comfrey, toadflax, tufted vetch… Soft fruit, oilseed and bean crops would also take a hit.

    And that is the thin end of the long-term catastrophe that now stares us in the face. You take one brick out of the ecological wall, others crumble around it. Then more crumble, on and on until the edifice collapses. Ecologists call it an extinction vortex. You lose bees, you lose plants. You lose plants, you lose more bees. Then more plants, then other insects, then the birds and animals that depend on them and on each other, all the way up the food chain. But never mind animals — if you stretch the process far enough, you're talking about humans.

    The more extravagant, ocean-boiling scenarios of climate science have drama on their side, but the entomologists in their quiet way are just as scary. In his book The Creation, the world's most celebrated biologist, E O Wilson, has spelt out what would happen if the vortex swallowed insects. "People need insects," he says, "but insects do not need us. If all humankind were to disappear tomorrow, it is unlikely that a single insect species would go extinct, except three forms of human body and head lice… In two or three centuries, with humans gone, the ecosystems of the world would regenerate back to the rich state of near-equilibrium that existed ten thousand or so years ago… But if insects were to vanish, the terrestrial environment would soon collapse into chaos."

    Flowering plants would go first, then herbaceous plants, then insect-pollinated shrubs and trees, then birds and animals and, finally, the soil. Wilson corrects the generally held misapprehension that the principal "turners and renewers" of the soil are worms. That distinction more properly belongs to insects and their larvae. Without them, bacteria and fungi would feast on the decaying plant and animal remains, while — for as long as it was able to support them — the land would be recolonised by a small number of fern and conifer species. The human diet would be wind-pollinated grasses and whatever remained to be harvested from a fished-out sea. It would not be enough. Widespread starvation would shrink the population to a fraction of its former size.

    "The wars for control of the dwindling resources, the suffering, and the tumultuous decline to dark-age barbarism would be unprecedented in human history." Wilson concedes that we might survive quite happily without body lice and malarial mosquitoes. Otherwise, he says: "Do not give thought to diminishing the insect world. It would be a serious mistake to let even one species of the millions on Earth go extinct."

    But here again is a parallel with global warming. Changes have taken place that cannot be reversed, and further change is unstoppable. Unlike global warming, however, loss of insects has not inspired national governments or the UN to take expensive action to forestall it. The plight of the honeybee has been well documented if not well understood. The causes of colony-collapse disorder, in which bees disappear without trace from their hives, are debated as fiercely as the causes of climate change, with opinion dividing along very similar fault-lines determined often by vested interests.

    Bee farmers and the European parliament blame arable farmers for killing or poisoning their bees with GM crops and careless use of insecticides. The arable farmers say their critics don't know what they are talking about. Others suspect viruses, parasites or fungi. Some even blame radiation from mobile telephones for disrupting the insects' navigational systems. Many think it likely that a combination of factors is at work — pesticides perhaps weakening the bees' immune systems and rendering them defenceless against common pests and diseases (though again the arable boys won't have it). Tim Lovett, president of the British Beekeepers' Association (BBKA), suspects a combination of varroa mites, viruses and a vicious parasite called Nosema ceranae, a microsporidium that occupies some strange biological niche between animal and plant.

    What all outside the government are agreed upon is that more money is needed for research. Until recently the UK government committed only £1.2m a year to the bee industry, most of which was spent by Defra's own National Bee Unit on site inspections, though in January it announced another £400,000 a year for research.

    "The government blames poor beekeeping," says Lovett. "But there is absolutely no reason to suppose that standards in the last few years have got worse. On the contrary, they have got better because beekeepers are aware of the problems." The BBKA argues that effective research into prophylactics and treatments for bee disease would cost £8m over five years — which, given the economic returns from improved crop yields and the knock-on benefits of jobs and taxation on profit, has all the hallmarks of a bargain. But nothing is certain. The economic cavalry may or may not arrive before the last honeybee flops onto its back, and it may or may not do the trick if it does.

    With bumblebees the situation is even worse. Beyond their inclusion in the Biodiversity Action Plan, where they are just seven among 1,149 listed species ranging from mosses to whales, the government offers no direct funding for their protection. Artificial nitrogen fertilisers mean there is no need for the old-fashioned rotation crops, most importantly clover, that they used to forage on, and herbicides have eliminated most of the wild alternatives. Their nesting sites have gone too. Some species live in dense grass above ground; others prefer underground cavities — typically abandoned rodents' nests. The removal of hedgerows and unploughed field margins has put paid directly to the upstairs bees and indirectly to the downstairs ones by starving out the voles and mice that create their homes. Any that do find nesting places are likely to have them smashed by farm machinery or zonked by pesticides.

    Even that is not the end of it. Many surviving populations of bumblebees are small and isolated. This results in inbreeding, which weakens the gene pool and increases the threat of extinction. Goulson reports that the highly virulent small hive beetle, Aethina tumida, whose larvae have devastated tens of thousands of honeybee colonies in the US and Canada, has spread into bumblebee nests, along with deformed-wing virus (which has the effect implicit in its name and is carried by mites). The small hive beetle has not yet appeared in the UK but it has reached other parts of Europe, and its transmission here via imported bees is a matter of "when", not "if".

    Good news? There is a little. Government subsidies are available to farmers who replant hedgerows, restore grassland or sow wildflower strips. This is for "biodiversity", but bees will get some benefit. But it is nowhere near enough. "Most bumblebees," says Goulson, "cannot be conserved by managing small protected islands of habitat within a sea of intensively farmed land. Large areas of suitable habitat are needed to support viable populations in the long term."

    If the worst happens and Lord Rooker's requiem for the honeybee reaches its solemn conclusion some time around 2017, the burden of responsibility heaped upon the bumblebee will be unsupportable. Bookmakers would give very long odds against the survival of long-tongued bumblebees and the plants that depend on them, and even longer odds against their short-tongued cousins filling the void left by honeybees. Given that a bumblebee nest contains only a few hundred insects, while a honeybee hive contains thousands, it would require a population explosion on the scale of a biblical plague.

    Already, says Goulson, crop yields are beginning to suffer. Bald spots are appearing at the centres of bean fields where bumblebees are failing to penetrate. As in so many other aspects of global life, it is China that lights the way ahead. In Sichuan province, the most important crop is pears, which depend on pollination by bees. But there are no bees. A blunderbuss approach to pesticides has all but wiped them out. Result: thousands of villagers have to turn out with paintbrushes to pollinate the trees by hand. "It's just about possible in a country where labour is cheap," says Goulson, "but it wouldn't work in Europe."

    Bombus terrestris meanwhile chugs happily along the Channel coast, following its scrambled instincts and ignoring the calendar. Not since the sirens tempted Odysseus has a mellifluous sound raised such a lethal echo.
