National Institutes of Health and the Brookhaven National Lab
is on the brink of resolving a long-standing dispute with
enormous implications for public health.
In a paper due out tomorrow in the Journal of the American Medical
Association (JAMA), Nora Volkow and coworkers are
reporting that a 50-minute exposure to cell phone radiation
can affect the normal functioning of the human brain.
What is particularly remarkable about the new work is that
those regions of the brain that were most highly exposed to
phone radiation had the largest increases in metabolic activity.
Whether these short-term changes will lead to health consequences
(and what they might be) is far from clear -- though Volkow already
has preliminary indications of a long-term effect.
Importantly, this new finding upsets the current orthodoxy because
such low-levels EMF effects are thought to be impossible.
Nora Volkow, the lead author of the JAMA study, is the
director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse. She told
Microwave News that she recommends using a wired earpiece
when on a mobile phone. She is most senior U.S. health official
to come out for precaution.

She did researches about the cognitive effects of the exposure to radiofrequencies in mice and she is member of Seletun a group of independent resarchers who promote new biology-based safety standards for EMF.

Leganes has become the first European city to the implementation of an ordinance on phone masts "without affecting the quality of mobile coverage of the city", as highlighted by the mayor of the town, Rafael Gómez Montoya, following the presentation a study of the Polytechnic University of Madrid, which confirms that the maximum level of immission in the town is situated at 0.1 microwatts per square centimeter.
The mayor, accompanied by the councilman of Industry, Raúl Calle, a professor at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Ceferino Maestu and President of the Local Federation of Neighborhood Associations, Juan Antonio Sanchez, has presented this study.
According to the Consistory, this level 4,500 times lower than those required by state law, shows that Leganés Municipal Ordinance complies with Mobile Antenna, adopted in November 2010 and driven by neighborhood associations, and no impact on mobile phone use.
The study was carried out thanks to 'Legaconrad', implemented by the Polytechnic University of Madrid through the Biomedical Technology Centre, which has created a map of the Leganés electromagnetic which monitors and measures the level of immission citywide in real time.
The project, located in the implantation period, has six phases to be completed in March. If the first phase of the project, a system for measuring the emission at 105 points in the city, with the latter being designed for continuous measurement equipment.
As explained by the City Council, the objectives of the next steps are to "establish a real map of antennas, measurement stations installed in about 100 buildings in the city, connecting the system to the network and publish the data on a public website."
Ceferino Maestu, professor at the UPM, Legaconrad considered as "one of the most innovative systems that enable citizens to access all data sent across a website that proves that the right to health is compatible with the new technologies. "
