Concerned Parents Protest as Telecom Invades Schools: Government and Industry Denies the Risk

by Aliss Terpstra

The growing number of people with sensitivities to electromagnetic fields and microwaves (EMF) is testament to the fact that average exposure allowances from modern telecommunications are too high to be called safe for everyone. And these people are getting tired of hearing a certain phrase: "If it was harmful, the government would never have approved it."

The world according to Health Canada works like this: Selected science from corporations or approval from an unquestioned authority (ie. the World Health Organization) equals safety. Therefore, people who claim to get sick from cell phones, computers, wireless internet and phones emitting microwaves at WHO-approved exposure levels must be suffering from something else – or they are crazy.

In the real world, true evidence of safety is the healthy functioning of the most vulnerable – pregnant women and children – when they are intentionally, unavoidably, or accidentally exposed to microwave radiation at approved levels. Yet an increasing number of people (around 15% according to Dr. Magda Havas), including children all over the world, are showing symptoms of ill health after exposure to WHO-approved levels of microwaves from transmitter towers, wireless internet and phones. The scientific research was there all along to show that this would happen, especially to children, but the science was simply not used by the WHO committee setting the standards. The committee members were from the telecommunications industries.

So, on weight of evidence, it is more likely that the 'approved' levels are unsafe and the craziness lies in the agency doing the approving.

Hazards of Childhood Exposure to Wi-Fi Transmitters & Cell Phones

Recently, children attending 14 schools in the Georgian Bay area communities of Simcoe County developed hypersensitivity illness with headaches, fatigue, brain fog, double vision, auditory confusion, skin rash, nausea and muscle weakness when exposed to the microwaves emitted by recently installed high-power Wi-Fi transmitters inside their schools. And when the kids were away from the schools, these symptoms disappeared. Repeated medical evaluations found no other cause, and no medical treatments proved helpful.

Naturally, parents were deeply concerned. But when they approached school board officials they were essentially told to stop bothering and go away. Health Canada experts supported the Simcoe school board officials, saying Wi-Fi in schools was safe for children.

According to a new book by Devra Davis, PhD, entitled: Disconnect: The truth about cell phone radiation, what the industry has done to hide it, and how to protect your family, there are five billion cell phones now in use around the world. The levels of microwave radiation they emit are approved as safe under these conditions – occasional use; short calls; held more than an inch away from the ear of a large adult male with head size in 90th percentile; and turned off between calls.

But many phones are held right against the thinner, smaller skulls of children whose parents never read that disclaimer. These phones are now zapping brains with the same power level used in radar, brains that have not fully developed the ability to make ethical judgements, calculate speed, or assess risk. This is why we don't let children drive. Yet the Ontario government is considering allowing children to use cell phones in class. ("Heh-heh, at least they won't be driving!" said Premier McGuinty.)

To match the exponential growth in phones used by children, school boards are being persuaded that it's necessary to install Wi-Fi transmitters every few meters in ceilings and walls throughout the entire building to give children a "21st-century learning environment." Wi-Fi is apparently affordable even when school boards are too strapped to buy current textbooks and keep libraries open. Teachers and students aren't hampered by limited access to inconvenient cables and plugs, but can download and upload anything from high resolution video to updated curriculum text, anywhere, anytime. The sales pitch from Cisco is irresistible.

According to the non-industry-funded research on health effects at these power levels, the schools' Cisco Wi-Fi transmitters have overlapping zones of microwaves powerful enough to break DNA strands and cause the brain to release heat-shock proteins into spinal fluid.

In addition to microwaves from a phone held next to the head or in the hands above the lap, the exposed children are constantly absorbing powerful carrier waves with varying pulsed signals intended for thousands of users that are nowhere near the school. Millions of massively electrified antenna towers are on rooftops everywhere to send the signals to phones and wireless internet ports. They are blanketing us with an invisible fog of pulsed frequencies that can prevent our brains from making melatonin at night, at power levels capable of commandeering the heart's own electrical rhythm.

Industry and Government Response to Public Concerns

When the argument is made for using safer alternatives that require less power and emit less radiation (such as fiber optic cable, or less powerful phones that only receive text and voice in a narrow frequency range that does not need a constant carrier wave, or for demand-only with a short delay for power-up), we are told that there are no safety concerns (or carbon emission concerns) that warrant such a level of inconvenience for consumers.

When the plea is made for more research and more protective safety standards for an item that has already escaped from Pandora's Box, made it on to store shelves around the globe, and is now starting to interfere, literally, with the birds and bees, we are told that the science is complete and the regulatory due diligence has been done. This denial is especially swift if the item has become an indispensable and lucrative cash cow for the government. The wireless telecommunications industry is just such a cash cow. The government revenues from transmitter fees and bandwidth access alone are incomprehensibly large – multiple billions of euros in Britain alone.

The industry is also appallingly energy-greedy, sucking up 1% of electricity produced globally to make that electrosmog feeding billions of phones and wireless networks. In 2009, a study from Britain estimated that the telecommunications industry's global energy consumption released 110.7 million tonnes of C02 into the atmosphere. The electricity used to power the towers has the carbon footprint of driving 29 million cars for a year. Each telecom company gets to erect an unlimited number of their own towers, beside competitors, and no laws require them to coordinate transmission needs to reduce power consumption and consumer exposure.

Experts Address Concerned Parents About Dangers of Telecom Pollution

Barrie Trower is a retired physicist, teacher, and champion of the rights of children to live without being damaged by lax government regulation of telecommunication microwave exposures. He now spends his life travelling around the world volunteering his expertise to that end. Trower is a soft-spoken, grandfatherly, unfailingly polite Brit who once worked for the British Secret Service debriefing Cold War spies on their use of stealth microwave weapons. On August 24, he and Dr. Magda Havas addressed a packed hall at the University of Toronto's Health Sciences building.

Trower had come from Britain on invitation by parents from the Simcoe County Safe School Committee. Frustrated with the intransigence of their local school board in addressing concerns about the deteriorating health of their children in 14 different schools with powerful Wi-Fi systems, they had raised funds to bring Trower to Canada in hopes of pressuring the school board to remove Wi-Fi and alert others of the risk to children.

Dr. Magda Havas, a professor at Trent University and an internationally recognized expert on the health effects of EMF radiation, had helped the parents produce a short documentary interviewing some of the affected children and parents. In it, one young boy stated: "It was pretty obvious," when describing how his symptoms abated after the wireless modem was disabled.

Prior to addressing the parents gathered at U of T, Trower had done several interviews for radio, television and newspapers and had also spent ninety minutes with Dr. Arlene King, Ontario's Chief Medical Officer of Health, and her top public health officials, explaining the scientific evidence of biological effects of microwave radiation on children and why the current allowable exposure levels should be lowered.

Trower told the audience of concerned parents that our Canadian government knew years ago that microwave radiation frequencies at the levels now used in wireless internet and phones were harmful. But the levels were allowed anyway for necessary exposures to police and military personnel – and also to "protect future industrial profits." Then, they locked up the research report, with its preface statement admitting collusion to withhold the information from the public, as a classified document for fifty years.

Trower retrieved it with a Freedom of Information Access request because, he said, he knew what it was called and where to look for it.

According to Havas and Trower, no government agency, including the W.H.O., has established a safe level of microwave exposure for children. In fact, Health Canada itself had commissioned a review of the health risks associated with wireless communication devices by The Royal Society of Canada in 1999. This review clearly stated that biological effects and health effects do occur from microwave radiation used by "wireless communication devices" including the specific frequencies which were now transmitted by the school Wi-Fi devices in Simcoe County, and at well below the established "safe" guidelines published by Health Canada in Safety Code 6, based on the thermal effect.

Specifically, the Royal Society of Canada concluded that thermal effects well below the microwaves used by Wi-Fi devices can compromise the integrity of the blood-brain barrier (Sec. 6.6 pg 44). It also concluded that microwave radiation from wireless communication devices at intensities below Health Canada's guidelines can activate ODC salivary enzymes known to promote cancer in humans. (Sec. 6.3.3 pg 41-42)

The Royal Society's report concluded that microwaves at these frequencies and below Health Canada's guidelines disrupt calcium regulation (Sec. 6.2 pg 35) and there is "strong evidence that microwave irradiation produces behavioural and associated biochemical changes at or below the occupational exposure limits in Safety Code 6." (Sec. 6.7 pg 46)

Trower commented, "If we know there are no levels safe for children, and children are everywhere, how can the approved levels of exposure be safe? I have never met a single person who has read the ICNIRP (International Commission for Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection) guideline. It says, "Children, the elderly, and some chronically ill people might have a lower tolerance for one or more forms of microwave exposure." Health Canada uses a safety threshold of 'not more than 1,000 microwatts per cm2.' In 2007 a group of scientists published a recommended safety level in their Bio Initiative Report, which is 'not more than 0.1 microwatts per cm2'."

With some apparent exasperation, the superintendent of education with the Simcoe County School Board said "we can't just shut it down and affect the learning of 50,000 students because someone says it might have health effects."

Let's deconstruct this. Wi-Fi can be bought with taxpayer money, approved and installed without evidence of safety for children whose neurological systems are immature because someone from Cisco (selling Wi-Fi) says it's safe. But it can't be un-installed, even if taxpayers plead and insist; even if a Health-Canada-commissioned Royal Society report warns of serious risk; and even if children actually suffer harm.

It is the view of both Trower and Havis, along with the parents of at-risk children, that exposures must be lowered based on real-time effects and real rights to health protection, not on arguments about fake rights of children to have a "21st century learning environment". Those suffering the harm must be believed and those selling the harm – including the government bureaucrats – need to be held accountable.

Unfortunately, barely a day after Trower had returned to England, Dr. Arlene King's announcement reiterated the Ontario government's belief in the safety of Wi-Fi because of Health Canada's approval. The formal statement of support for Health Canada's authority is now on the Ontario government website. What ought to happen is for Dr. King to believe the children and act in THEIR best interest instead of the interests of the telecommunications industry.

Good grief, have we not learned enough from the shoddy faked science leading to Thalidomide tragedies and the people killed by Vioxx and Prepulsid to know that regulatory approval does not equal safety? Do we not have enough people killed by prescription drugs approved due to glowing reports written by drug companies and handed straight over to Health Canada with a cheque to know that it's time to make Health Canada more accountable?  Does Dr. King actually think Monsanto and Reynolds Tobacco science-for-profit is useful for approving public health safety standards?

Tighten the standards and force manufacturers to comply so those documented biological effects do not occur, instead of discarding the victims and embracing the harmful standard. Trower explained how to do it. Other countries like France and Germany have done it for their children. We should too.

Disconnect – The truth about cell phone radiation, what the industry has done to hide it, and how to protect your family. Devra Davis, PhD, MPH. Dutton 2010.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear HESA Committee members,

Attached is a manual for the Motorola cellphone, model 120e ( http://www.WOW-COM.COM ). Beginning at page 152, there is quite explicit information indicating "The available science does not allow us to conclude that mobile phones are absolutely safe."

The Guide goes on to list several studies showing that wireless phones can have negative consequences for the user's health. For example, "A few studies, however, have suggested that low levels of RF could accelerate the development of cancer in laboratory animals. In one study, mice genetically altered to be predisposed to developing one type of cancer developed more than twice as many cancers when they were exposed to RF energy compared to controls."

In addition to the statements about studies with laboratory animals, the Guide provides statistics about effects of RF on humans. "When tumors did exist in certain locations, however, they were more likely to be on the side of the head where the mobile phone was used." And "that... an association was found between mobile phone use and one rare type of glioma, neuroepithellomatous tumors."

And finally, on page 156, a startling admission: "Under the law, FDA does not review the safety of radiation-emitting consumer products such as mobile phones before marketing, as it does with new drugs or medical devices." Neither does Health Canada nor Industry Canada.

Does not this evidence that the cell phone industry is aware of potential harm, call for, at the very minimum, a public warning in the form of a label attached to every wireless device?

I find it shameful that the industry itself is being more responsible than Health Canada. Where Motorola is at least admitting that evidence exists indicating harm is possible, everyone at Health Canada and the Royal Society (e.g. Dr. Daniel Krewski) continue to maintain the opposite. Quoting Beth Pieterson and Dr. Krewski, "There is no evidence of harm." It is apparent that Health Canada serves no purpose as far as protecting the public is concerned.

Respectfully,

Sharon Noble

Letter to the Editor

Peterborough Examiner

September 30, 2010

I just returned from a meeting of the KPR District School Board, where Peterborough's Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Rosanna Pellizzari, made a presentation about the "Safety of WiFi in Schools."

Dr. Pellizzari said that anyone can cherry pick results to support their conclusions and this is exactly what she did.

She did state at the beginning of her talk that she was not an expert in this field and then gave opinions that could have been offered only by experts. Experts conduct research and publish on the effects of electromagnetic energy but Dr. Pellizzari hasn't even read the primary research in this field. She based her presentation on a few reports and then "cherry picked" her quotes.

She quoted from a review of WiFi released by the Ontario Agency for Health Promotion and Protection (OAHPP) on September 16, 2010. You can read this document and comments about it at:

http://www.magdahavas.com/2010/09/23/oahpp-comments-on-wifi-and-health/

Of the many "cherry picked" quotes was the amount of radiation coming from a WiFi laptop computer at a distance of 1 meter. I don't know of anyone who sits that far away from a laptop computer. Indeed some people place their computers on their lap and their hands are in contact with the keyboard when they are typing! This would give a much higher reading than one taken 3 feet away!

Dr. Pellizzari correctly stated that the research on WiFi does not support the Bradford-Hill criteria of causation. However, she left the false impression that studies have been conducted and they failed the test. This is false!

There is only ONE study (that I'm aware of) on the biological effects of WiFi and that study reported that donated sperm showed DNA damage and reduced motility when exposed to a WiFi computer. That's it! We have no long-term studies on WiFi and we have no idea how this radiation is going to affect growing bodies.

The closest research is on adults who use cell phones and adults who live near cell phone antennas. These studies show a disturbing increased risk of various tumors after 10 years of cell phone use on the same side of the head to which you hold your cell phone and an increased incidence of cancers and other health effects for those who live within 500 meters of cell towers. If we are basing the effects of WiFi exposure on these studies then we have much to be concerned about!

During her presentation Dr. Pellizzari showed a small video clip of a story on The CBC National about WiFi in schools that aired September 8. The clip was of Beth Pieterson who was speaking on behalf of Health Canada. Had she shown the entire 11-minute segment the KPRD School Board would have been left with a very different impression that would have been contradictory to what Dr. Pellizzari intended, so she "cherry picked" a very small portion of the video to support her views.

The CBC video can be viewed at:

http://www.cbc.ca/video/#/News/TV_Shows/The_National/ID=1587312590

Watch the related segment by Wendy Mesley on cell phones and decide if you think this radiation is harmless.

http://www.cbc.ca/thenational/indepthanalysis/wendymesley/2010/09/cellphone_safety_what_arent_they_telling_us.html

I was particularly disturbed that Dr. Pellizzari gave the impression that WiFi has been measured in schools and the levels are so low they couldn't possible have any effects.

Most schools with WiFi have not measured the levels of microwave radiation in schools and especially where children sit. Since some schools use industrial strength WiFi, which is much more powerful than the WiFi people have in their homes, I don't think we can be blasé about this exposure.

Indeed, the ONLY statement with which I agree is that Dr. Pellizzari recommended that schools monitor microwave exposure, although she said, "If they can afford to do this."

We cannot afford not to measure exposure!

We are exposing children to microwave radiation that has been shown to induce breaks in DNA, increase membrane permeability of the blood brain barrier, alter the movement of calcium between cells, reduce sperm motility and viability, cause heart irregularities, alter brain wave activity at levels well below our federal guidelines that are based on how much heat can be dissipated by a 6 foot, 180 lb soldier!

Where are the guidelines that protect the growing bodies of children? And, does anyone care about the exposure of teachers?

Subject: Washington Post article: FCC changes cellphone safety guidance, October 1, 2010

Date: Fri, 1 Oct 2010 07:49:39 -0700

The Cellular Telephone and Internet Association meets in San Francisco next week for its annual meeting. It seems likely that FDA changed its guidance recommending consumers purchase low EMF phones after taking this event into account. San Francisco passed legislation earlier this year to require retailers in that city to post the EMF emission levels (otherwise known as SAR, for Specific Absorption Rate) for each phone they sell.

The CITA, who lobbied hard against this bill has announced that they are not planning any future conferences in San Francisco in retaliation. What is the CTIA and the FDA afraid of - the truth?

Tell the City of San Francisco to hang tough. The truth is becoming known about what the cell phone radiation science tells us about the health risks they pose.

THE COZY RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE FCC AND THE CTIA EXPOSED THIS WEEK

The CTIA-Wireless Association has been caught this week in secret cooperation with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) over website changes ostensibly intended to serve a dual purpose for the wireless lobby.  The FCC, who oversees the telecommunications industry, appears to have changed their website to help the CTIA in its lawsuit against the city of San Francisco following passage of The Right to Know cell phone legislation and additionally, to help in the CTIA's attempt to stop the spread of this legislation from city to city.

The CTIA is suing the City of San Francisco over the recently passed Right to Know cell phones legislation that demands every cell phone sold in San Francisco be labeled with the SAR rating.

Until Sept 20, 2010 the FCC advised buying a lower SAR cell phone.  The CTIA vehemently opposed this Right To Know legislation in San Francisco which passed in June.  The CTIA then sued the city.

When the relatively small city of Burlingame, CA decided to hold discussions about possible Right To Know legislation, the CTIA sent top officials from Washington, D.C. to the city of 27,000  to take their turn at explaining why the citizens of Burlingame should not have the opportunity to see how much radiation was being emitted from their cell phones.

The evening of the hearing the CTIA said the FCC did NOT suggest buying a lower SAR phone.  He could say this only because the FCC website had been altered a matter of hours before he spoke.  The FCC changed their website on the day of the hearing when they discovered, through documentation submitted by supporters of the legislation, that the FCC website suggested buying a lower SAR cell phone.  The FCC website was shut down for awhile on Sept 20, and came back up later that day with the advisory missing and other language pertaining to this issue changed.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) October 1, 2010

84 percent of Americans own a cell phone, 89 million of us watch TV beamed to us by satellite, and we can't have a cup of coffee our local café without being exposed to Wi-Fi. Wireless internet, smart phones, and laptops have transformed the way we work and live. But what are the consequences of this revolution? The same technology that allows us to video chat with friends across the world and surf the Internet from the comfort of our beds has exposed us to a dangerous and unprecedented number of electromagnetic fields (EMFs). We are constantly being exposed to EMFs—invisible lines of force that surround all electrical devices—at a rate 100 million times greater than our grandparents were. In her groundbreaking new book ZAPPED (HarperOne, Hardcover $25.99, on-sale October 2010), health expert and New York Times bestselling author Ann Louise Gittleman reveals startling truths about the invisible hazards of the 21st century that will motivate us to change how we use our laptops, how we locate our home electronics and televisions, and even how we sleep.

Radiation from cell phones is just the tip of the iceberg. In ZAPPED, Gittleman explores emerging evidence that EMFs from wall outlets, refrigerators, computers, dimmer switches, hair dryers, and a host of other everyday devices are creating energy disturbances within the body, leading to increased free radicals and disruptions in cellular DNA, which are in turn linked to a wide range of negative health effects, including tumors, chronic fatigue, and other diseases. These risks are especially high for children, whose developing bones are thinner than adults, making them even more vulnerable to electromagnetic disturbances in the brain and other organs.

ZAPPED is a call to action. Gittleman reviews the latest scientific research and provides a proactive plan to counteract the toxic effects of overexposure. Small changes, including how we use our electronic devices and how we arrange our living and working spaces, can make a big difference in our levels of exposure to EMF radiation. Her practical approach moves room by room, teaching readers how to identify and remedy the electromagnetic trouble spots in their homes and offices. Gittleman offers concrete solutions to zap-proof our lives, such as:

  •     Hold your cell phone away from your head when the call is connecting—that's when the signal is strongest.
  •     Keep televisions out of the bedroom. They emit AC magnetic fields that interfere with the production of melatonin, the hormone that governs your Circadian rhythms.
  •     Eat to beat EMFs. Superfoods and seasonings such as artichokes and cinnamon help to replace the anti-oxidants, enzymes, and nutrients that electro pollution can rob from your body. Gittleman's expertise in nutrition allows her to formulate a diet that turns your body into a shield against EMFs and other electronic dangers.

Are we going to give up our cell phones, laptops, and other electronics? Absolutely not, but emerging scientific evidence tells us that it is crucial to make important changes in our home and work environments. A must-read for anyone who is plugged in, ZAPPED teaches readers how to survive the dangers of technology and thrive in the wireless age. "At a time when Electro-Magnetic Fields (EMF's) have reached a toxic level, Gittleman has developed a proactive approach for dealing with the constant bombardment. Rather than terrorize readers with the negatives, she offers them practical, step-by-step solutions for altering the invisible forces that now surround us all. Great idea. Great book."

Background:

New research released in the new expose book "Disconnect" shows that cell phones are not as safe as we think they are.  "Disconnect" shows that "the most popular gadget ever has been shown to damage DNA, break down the brain's defenses and reduce sperm count, while increasing memory loss, the risk of cancer and neurological diseases such as Alzhiemer's and possibly even autism."   In her talk, Dr. Davis will discuss the efforts by the cell phone industry to hide the potential dangers of cell phone radiation and what people can do to protect themselves and children from harm.

The City of San Francisco has been in the forefront of dealing with this issue by recently passing the countries first "Right to Know" law requiring the publication of Cell Phone Radiation levels.  The City has been sued by the industry "trade association" which coincidentally will be kicking off their national conference at the Moscone Center next Tuesday.
