Madrid, increased cancer near mobile phone antennas.

After Barcelona, Bilbao, Murcia, and so on ... MADRID !
Latest news!

The Zarzaquemada residents are opposed to relay antennas.

- The association of Zarzaquemada residents, in Leganés, have asked on Monday the immediate suspension of mobile phone relay antennas active sites » in urban areas until there are research studies that conclude with certitude the harmless of those infrastructures.
- It was with these words that the association was asking to the local government (PSOE and IU) for “an urgent epidemiological research study” affording to evaluate with a much better accuracy the existing relation between the increased cancer cases generated in some city buildings closed to relay antennas sites. In this way, the association’s president, Juan Antonio Sánchez, recalled that some six conflicting points are still there in the city, with the one of La Mancha Avenue where 28 residents are asking the destruction of two relay antennas base stations after a 10 cancer cases in the same building.

- At the last meeting, the co-owners group decided to start a huge public awareness campaign and a cluster study where all suspected cases of sickness linked to the relay antennas will be listed.

- More, it was decided to urge on the local authorities “to draw up a municipal order in a way to bring under regulation and to control the relay antennas installations”, the association has started a signature collection and to be presented to the Mayor. A possibility “to proceed with many media public awareness demonstrations” is not discarded, said Juan Antonio Sánchez.

- In order to concentrate all mobilization and all information process, residents have set up an commission which will be gathered together at the Social Centre every Wednesday.

- “We want to draw a map with all the pathologies in the area”, said Sánchez. He was mentioning the Monegros, Roncal and Priorato streets as well as San Nicasio and Garrascal areas as main sectors hit by illness following the antennas installation.

Childhood Asthma Rise Remains a Puzzle

Hi All
When you read the article below, please consider where cell phone antennas and towers are usually sited. They are usually near the poorer residential areas of towns and cities, close to the main roads, railways and factory areas. Also consider the poor living conditions of many years ago when extensive visible pollution was common but electricity was rare. Asthma was not such a problem then, but it has been linked to electromagnetic pollution today.

CDC Report Shows Racial Disparities in Asthma Rate
By Todd Zwillich

Dec. 12, 2006 -- Nearly one in 10 American children now has asthma , a sharp rise that still has scientists searching for a cause, a CDC report concluded Tuesday.
An estimated 6.5 million children under age 18 (8.9%) are now diagnosed with the disease. The rate has more than doubled since 1980, according to the report.
At the same time, racial disparities show evidence of worsening. While 8% of white children are estimated to have asthma, 19% of Puerto Rican children and 13% of black children have the disease.
Asthma is marked by shortness of breath, cough, chest tightness, and wheezing. Its severity can range from mild to severe disease, and asthma attacks can be fatal.
Why Asthma Rates Are Rising
Researchers are unsure whether the increased rate reflects a true rise in asthma prevalence or whether it is the product of more widespread diagnosis.
"It's probably truly increasing, but we don't know how to tease out why," Lara Akinbami, MD, a CDC epidemiologist who authored the report, tells WebMD. "Really no one knows the answer."
One theory speculates that widespread use of cleaning products, antibiotic cleansers, and immunizations have helped spur a rise in asthma. While a steady -- but moderate -- dose of germs can stimulate infants' immune systems early in life, that robustness may be lost when young children don't confront immune challenges, the theory says.
Scientists are far more certain about the causes of racial differences. Poorer children have increased exposure to indoor cigarette smoke, mold, insects, as well as outdoor diesel soot and air pollution known to irritate the lungs and make them more susceptible to asthma, Akinbami says.
Asthma's Death Rate
Asthma's overall death rate has fallen to 2.5 deaths per million children under 17; there were 3.2 deaths per million in 1999. Meanwhile, accidental injuries kill 111 children per million, according to the CDC. But black children remain nearly three times more likely than whites to be hospitalized with asthma and five times more likely to die from asthma.
"This is a dramatic health disparity," Norman H. Edelman, MD, chief medical officer of the American Lung Association, tells WebMD.
The organization has lobbied for efforts to clean urban living spaces of mold and other allergens that stoke asthma. Doctors have also been encouraged to aggressively treat the disease with steroid medications.
Edelman attributed the racial difference in deaths to chronic lack of health care for black children.
In terms of mortality, it can be reduced if people get better health care, he says.

Honey Bees dying or vanishing

Hi All

At last, a major US company - Haagen-Daz Ice Cream, has taken real interest in the honey bee crisis. Haagen-Daz are supporting research, raising awareness and raising money towards saving honey bees. They have set up a very entertaining web site which I encourage you to visit. I hope that the impact of electro magnetic radiation is seriously and thoroughly investigated for its part in this ongoing ecological disaster.

Are You Sleeping in a Dangerous, Electrically Polluted Bedroom?

The Canadian Initiative to stop

For those of you who do not know Dr Mercola, he runs the largest medical web site in the USA and advises his members about a very wide range of medical afflictions.
Please note his comments about safe buildings and more importantly safe sleeping practices.
Sarah Dacre
Are You Sleeping in a Dangerous, Electrically Polluted Bedroom?

Vicki Warren is the program director for the International Institute for Bau-Biologie & Ecology (IBE). For more details on this exciting and growing movement, see How Bau-Biologie Can Keep You and Your Home Healthy.

I decided to reverse the order here for a very important reason, in that I am announcing a new column on this site, which will be directed toward educating you about the dangers of the building that you live in, and what you can do to correct it.

Many of you may know that I started my medical practice just outside of Chicago in 1985. After 23 years in the same location, we will be moving to a new, state of the art office building.

Since environmental health is a concern of mine, the building will not only be LEED certified but it will likely have platinum certification, which is virtually never awarded.

In the process of seeking to create the healthiest office possible, my consultations led me to seriously consider Bau Biology (German for "Building Biology") as a tool to improve the health of the environment. While LEED is great, it tends to focus on the environment. Whereas Bau Biology, like its name suggests, focuses more on human health.

Germans are famous for their precision and attention to detail and they did not fail us here. They have developed an incredible accumulation of knowledge that I can assure you, only a VERY small fraction of those in the building industry are even remotely aware of. There is a group in North America who has translated and expanded the German research to implement these techniques in other countries. The Institute for Bau-Biologie & Ecology (IBE) is dedicated to educating folks on how to create healthy indoor environments.

This includes the LEED community. Fortunately, my involvement will likely catalyze a communication between these two important bodies so we can take building health in the United States to the next level. After all, if you spend so much of your time indoors, how can you possibly be healthy if you are living in a toxic environment?

I hope to have at least one article a week devoted to this CRUCIAL health topic, because if you don't understand these principles, you could be living in a time bomb.

Electro-Pollution in Your Bedroom

The human body is an amazing, self-rejuvenating entity that has the ability to repair itself while it sleeps. This is accomplished with its own, internal electrical system that functions with very weak electrical impulses. Electrical impulses are generated by your brain and are used for intercellular communication. This is possible because your body is composed mainly of water with a high mineral content making it highly electrically conductive.

Cells know when to divide by vibrating. Brain cells, nerve cells, bone cells, all vibrate at different rates in order to communicate with one another. Unfortunately, our bodies act like tuning forks. When you vibrate a tuning fork (external electrical influence), any turning fork (like our body) in its vicinity will start vibrating at the same frequency or rate, and therefore will be confused as to how fast to grow.1

In the typical sleeping area, electrical exposure from external sources (live electrical wiring in ceilings, walls and floors) is thousands of times stronger than your body's own electrical system. Long-term exposure to these high-level electric fields can impair your body's ability to communicate within itself, and impact health. The average person spends approximately one-third of their life sleeping.

Doesn't it make sense to reduce exposure to electric fields in our sleeping areas?

The 2008 Building Biology Conference: Building the Way Nature Intended

Join the international movement of individuals who are rebuilding the built environment into one that nurtures and restores human life.

Some people develop symptoms when they experience long-term exposure, especially at night, to elevated levels of electricity, such as:

  • Headaches
  • Hyperactivity
  • Nightmares
  • Depression and fatigue
  • Eyestrain
  • Muscle cramps

Biological problems associated with electromagnetic stressors fall into two major categories:2

1. Brain (behavioral abnormalities, learning disabilities, altered bio-cycles and stress responses)

2. Growing tissue (embryos, genetics and cancer)

Research has shown that for a body to properly detoxify during sleep it must be alkaline, and high electromagnetic fields lead to acidity. This is especially true for heavy metal detoxification.3

5 Initial Steps to Create a Sleeping Sanctuary

1. Use battery devices near bed.

Research has shown that exposure to high magnetic fields while sleeping can cause severe long-term illness. Many electric clocks produce high magnetic fields.

2. Turn off bedroom-affecting circuits.

A restful sleep is necessary for health and a strong immune system. Electric fields affect the bio-communication system, keeping you from sleeping soundly.

3. Eliminate or shield from radio frequency (RF).

Radio frequency signals from portable phones, cell phones, and wireless devices have been shown to interfere with your body's immune system.

4. Use beds without metal.

Metal frames and metal box springs can amplify and distort the earth's natural magnetic field, which can lead to a non-restful sleep. Use natural materials.

5. Make sure there are no elevated magnetic fields.

Magnetic fields from appliances and building wiring can penetrate walls into a bedroom and disrupt your body's communication system. (<0.2milligauss)

WiFi and EM Radiation - The Rest of the Autism Story

by Heidi Stevenson

(NaturalNews) As has been well documented on NaturalNews*, there is a clear link between mercury poisoning, especially through thimerosal in vaccinations, and autism, along with other neurological disorders. There is, though, another factor that has recently been clearly linked to autism: wireless technology.

The Wireless Connection

George Louis Carlo, who has a doctorate from the prestigious State University of New York, a law degree from George Washington University, and is a fellow of the American College of Epidemiology, has been a thorn in the side of the cellular phone industry. In 1993, he was granted $28 million by this industry and U.S. government agencies to study risks associated with cell phones. His initial results indicated that there were no problems. However, by 1999, Dr. Carlo had gained significantly more evidence indicating a risk to DNA, eye cancers, and brain tumors.

Carlo developed a theory that low frequency cell phone signals are harmful to cell function. This results in cells protecting themselves by stopping movement of nutrients and waste products through the cellular membrane. Inability to move wastes outside cells results in a buildup of toxins. This led him to suspect a connection with the enormous increase in autism. His hypothesis suggests that autistic children are less able to process heavy metals, so they remain in their bodies (primarily the brain) and cause neurological damage, including autism.

Back to Mercury

There is now no question that mercury, along with other heavy metals such as lead, is associated with autism. A study in a 2003 issue of the International Journal of Toxicology shows that the hair of autistic babies is significantly short of mercury and other heavy metals. At first, this might seem counterintuitive. However, it shows a clear connection with Carlo's hypothesis. Mercury exposure is linked to autism. The problem is the inability of some children to metabolize it. It's stuck inside their brain cells. Therefore, it isn't excreted, so little of it shows up in hair. In other words, autistic babies have less mercury in their hair, because it's still in their brains, causing neurological damage.

Chelation Treatment for Autistic Children

Several different methods have been used to treat autistic children. Chelation attempts to remove toxic metals from the body. According to the December 2007 issue of WDDTY (What Doctors Don't Tell You), the most common chemical used for chelation is dimercaptosuccinic acid, better known as DMSA. Its safety record is good. It acts by binding with heavy metals in the blood, thus allowing them to be excreted. WDDTY reports that Dr. Amy Holmes used this technique on 85 autistic children over a course of four months at the end of 2000. The results showed that the younger the child, the greater the benefit:

* Children under age 6 have the best results, with 35% showing marked improvement and 39% showing moderate improvement. Sadly, 11% show no improvement.

* Between ages 6 and 12, 4% show marked improvement, 28% show moderate improvement, with the rest showing no improvement.

* Saddest of all, by age 18, no child gained any benefit from the chelation.

Dr. Holmes says, "We have noticed a large dependence of excretion on age of patient, with the younger patients excreting much more mercury than the older patients." She also said that she suspects that older children excrete heavy metals more slowly than younger ones, which would explain the better results in younger children.

Clearly, chelation therapy can help limit the symptoms of autistic children by removing toxic metals, including mercury. However, it's critical that this therapy be provided as early as possible, and it does not appear to be able to clear enough mercury to fully heal any autistic children, while some do not respond at all.

Chelation therapy results that are similar have been reported by clinical nutritionist, Tamara Mariea in Nashville, Tennessee at her Internal Balance clinic. She has treated over 500 children, but has found, like Dr. Holmes, that it fails to clear any heavy metals and provides no improvement in some children.

The Wireless/Electromagnetic Field Connection

Tamara Mariea and George Carlo met a few years ago. They wondered if Carlo's theory that cell phones, along with other electromagnetic (EM) radiation, could be the reason that some children were not helped with chelation therapy - that EM radiation interferes with the ability of cells to excrete toxic heavy metals. So, they decided to test Carlo's hypothesis. They chose a severely autistic 10 year-old boy whose parents had tried every therapy they could find, including chelation, but to no benefit.

First, they removed toxins from the boy's home, including cell phones, pollutants of all kinds, all wireless equipment, and most electrical equipment. All EM radiation devices were removed from Mariea's clinic, or their radiation was shielded. No wireless devices were allowed to enter.

Thus, most of the boy's time was spent without EM radiation. Hair and stool analyses were done to track whether he was able to excrete heavy metals, and gradually, they did. Most thrilling, though, is that this boy, who had been able to say nothing more than "Yes" or "No" started to talk. At one point, he told his parents, "The noise has gone from my head."

Mariea and Carlo then set up a trial with 20 autistic children. This one was less strict, involving little more than spending at least four hours, two-to-three times a week, in the EM-free clinic. It did not require such limitations elsewhere and no chelation was done. In three months, analyses showed that heavy metals were beginning to be excreted by the children. This is reported in the Journal of the Australian College of Nutrition and Environmental Medicine in the November 2007 issue.

This is, of course, an early study. But it's very promising. There were other results that indicate the likelihood of the efficacy of removing EM radiation. Heavy metals were excreted in a specific order, from the lightest to the heaviest:

* beryllium

* aluminum

* copper

* antimony

* mercury

* lead

* uranium

There was no anticipation of such a result by any study participant, including those who designed it. The consistency of it makes it difficult to assume that the results were from a placebo effect.

What Can a Parent Do?

First, and most significant, every parent should think about whether to vaccinate children. Look at the information available, not just that given out by the pharmaceutical companies and medical establishment. Do not be railroaded into vaccinating your child. Remember how your parents responded when you whined, "But everyone's doing it!" They made it absolutely clear that such an argument was pure nonsense. Now is the time to remember that lesson:

* Just because all the other parents are doing it.

* Just because the doctors are saying you should.

* Just because the schools are pressuring for vaccinations.

* Just because the government is now trying to coerce vaccinations.

Not one of these reasons, or all of them put together, can justify vaccinating your child without careful consideration of the risks involved.

If Your Child Has Already Been Vaccinated:

If your child has already been vaccinated, consider whether there was any adverse reaction of any kind. If so, then assume the worst. You have nothing to lose by doing that. It will allow you to be proactive, to be aware if your child starts to exhibit problems and to start looking - before problems show up - for treatment options.

There is no reason to give up hope, even if you realize that your child has been affected. As this article shows, there are ways to help your child.

Homeopathic treatment by a professional can be effective in helping a child reach his or her full potential. Nonetheless, my first advice, as a professional homeopath, would be to do everything possible to eliminate WiFi and EM from your child's environment. If you live close to overhead wirelines or cell phone masts, then move. It may be expensive, but consider the expense to your child's entire life or the costs of raising such a child, let alone the emotional turmoil you'd be facing.

Do not let your child sit close to a television (It might not be a bad idea to ban television from your home entirely) . Keep your child's time in front of a computer to a minimum. Do not allow your child to use a cell phone, unless it's with an earpiece, and try to keep even cell phone usage with earpieces to a minimum. Make sure your child sleeps in an EM radiation-free room. Try to give your child as many hours a day as possible completely away from any electrical devices.

After shielding your child from EM radiation to the best of your ability, consider other therapies, such as chelation; first insisting on understanding any negative effects that the chelating drug may cause, or homeopathy.

These are not the only possible treatments, though they are the ones this author sees as the first recourse and most likely to bring the greatest benefit, especially if started very early in life. For other approaches, especially for older children, refer to the website of New Generation, a parents' group that is studying the causes and potential treatments for autism ( .

A true understanding of science means understanding that nothing is ever fully proven. If absolute proof of the connections among mercury/heavy metals, thimerosal, vaccinations, WiFi/EM, and autism (along with many other neurological disorders) are required before doing something to limit the damage, then it will never be possible to stop the pharmaceutical corporations and medical juggernaut from poisoning our children and destroying lives.

The evidence of these connections is already compelling. It is long past the time to stop giving free license to the profit motive and start looking at what is happening to us and to our children based on the specious argument that there is no proof or faked pharmaceutical tests. There is more than enough documentation now to show the likely links causing the autism epidemic. If we wait, then there truly is no hope for the future.

In another related arena, PEST management, the founder of PEST (Prevent Environment Suicide Today), Steven Tvedten stated, "The people who would do this to children, to all of us, have no souls. I have looked into their eyes and seen that"**. Nothing could say it better.

Environmental Impact Analysis: New Requirement for Cell Towers (USA)

Attached is an article that ran yesterday (2/19/08) on a new D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling requiring the Federal Communications Commission to conduct Environmental Impact Assessments of cell towers on migratory birds before granting permits. Projecting forward, this ruling could be a new opening to raise concerns over other effects of tower radiation. We believe this is a significant move forward as it is a crack in the veneer created by the mobile phone industry in the Telecommunications Act of 1996 where EISs were explicitly excluded. Expect the mobile phone industry to immediately begin legislative moves to counter this high court decision....Stay tuned.....

WILDLIFE: Cell towers must protect birds, U.S. court rules (02/19/2008)
Allison Winter, E&ENews PM reporter

The government must require cell phone towers to be equipped with protection for migratory birds, a federal court ruled today.

The split decision by the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia says that the Federal Communications Commission illegally licensed 6,000 towers along the Gulf Coast. The court says the agency must reassess those permits to make sure the communications towers comply with the Endangered Species Act and National Environmental Policy Act.

The decision addresses FCC's ruling on towers in the Gulf of Mexico, but lawyers who argued for environmentalists on the case said it could have broader reach for all of the agency's permits on new communications towers.

"The reason we think it's significant is that it directs FCC to carefully review the environmental impact of towers before they issue the permits," said Steve Roady, a lawyer with Earthjustice.

Two members of the three-judge panel said FCC should consult with wildlife experts and require environmental impact assessments for the towers. The court also said FCC failed to sufficiently involve the public in its tower approval process. Circuit Judge Brett Kavanaugh dissented. He said the suit was premature because FCC is re-examining the issue of migratory birds and towers in in a separate, broader rulemaking.

"The Catch-22 for the interested parties ... is that the commission provides public notice of individual tower applications only after approving them," Judges Judith Rogers and Merrick Garland wrote in their majority opinion.

The American Bird Conservancy and other environmental groups had sued FCC in an effort to block the communications towers along the Gulf Coast, a major migratory corridor for birds. The group says 5 million to 50 million birds are killed each year in collisions and other accidents with communications towers.

"We are very pleased by today's ruling, which will require the FCC to assess the environmental impacts of towers," said Darin Schroeder of the American Bird Conservancy. "Given the large number of bird deaths caused by towers, an environmental review is long overdue." He added that the decision a "huge victory" for birds.

Aviation lights on communications towers can attract and confuse birds, especially in foggy conditions, environmentalists say. Groups say birds could be saved if FCC would change its requirements for lighting on the towers, placing white strobe lights over the constant red lights, to alert the birds. Some industry groups say the lighting schemes would be expensive and have questionable benefits.

After cancer warnings on mobiles, could your home phone be putting your health in danger?

By TESSA THOMAS - Last updated at 22:57pm on 18th February 2008
Daily Mail

Like many of us, David Dean enjoyed the freedom a digital cordless phone gave him to walk about the house while on calls.

Then the 44-year-old company director from Wimbledon started getting headaches - when he stopped using his cordless phone the headaches went overnight.

There has been much controversy over health problems linked to mobile phones and masts. Only this week, a new report - based on research revealed in the Mail last year - claimed that people who use a mobile phone for hours a day are 50 per cent more likely to develop mouth cancer.

But some experts believe that digital wireless phones - used in millions of homes - could be just as problematic.

These phones operate using the same technology as wi-fi computer systems and mobile phones - with the base station acting like a miniature mobile phone mast.

A recent survey by the Dutch Electrohypersensitivity Foundation has found that digitally enhanced cordless telephones - Dects - are the main source of radiation in homes that have them.

The researchers claimed that they frequently cause headaches, fatigue, heart palpitations and concentration and sleep problems.

According to cancer specialist Professor Lennart Hardell from the University Hospital, in Orebro, Sweden: "The risks are the same as for mobiles, but they haven't been studied because researchers thought the Dect operated like a landline."

One of the few scientists to have included cordless phones in his studies, Professor Hardell's research suggests that habitual users have a three-fold risk of acoustic neuroma (a benign tumour between the ear and brain) and a four-fold risk of a malignant brain tumour.

But other experts dispute his findings.

A Dect phone sits in a cradle on a base that charges it up between calls.

"Although people treat a Dect phone as if it's an ordinary landline, its base station constantly emits radiation, so the health risks are the same as for a regularly used mobile," says Professor Hardell.

It is not only their constant output that elevates these risks, he says. "They are usually in rooms where people spend a lot of time and people tend to spend longer on them than they do on a mobile."

According to Dr Andrew Goldsworthy, an honorary lecturer in biology at Imperial College London: "The effect is you have a double whammy, because the base station is powering up 24-hours-a-day and the handset is picking up and sending signals whenever it's held to the head."

The signal can travel though walls and ceilings, too.

Ron Butlin, a 58-year-old novelist, from Edinburgh, had already been suffering from mild heart palpitations when he got a Dect phone. But in a matter of weeks, they became severe.

"I was rushed to hospital and put on various drugs until they found a combination that worked, fortunately - but it was frightening."

He got rid of the Dect phone and has had no palpitations since.

So what is going on? Goldsworthy believes that the microwave signals from the phone weaken cell membranes, which then leak. Enzymes can then get into the cell and start digesting it.

In Germany, hundreds of doctors signed a petition calling for a ban on Dect phones in public places.

The German Federal Agency for Radiation Protection has backed this with a warning that Dect devices, "have no control to regulate power output according to the power needed".

In Europe, you can now now buy digital cordless phones that do not emit microwaves when on standby. But in Britain, the response is more conservative.

Dismissing studies like Hardell's a a one-off, the Health Protection Agency - which advises the UK Government on radiation issues - argues that as a Dect signal is weak, it is not harmful.

"Only the base station unit in a Dect system is operating like a mast and the health risks around it are no greater than from a mobile mast," says the HPA's Dr Michael Clark.

However, critics say that it is not the signal strength that matters. One of the worries is that the radiowaves are pulsed, coming in sharp intermittent bursts that can disrupt the brain's signalling.

The two sides do agree that a Dect base station is constantly emitting, like a mini phone mast in the home.

The HPA has advised manufacturers that base units need not be designed to be on all the time.

"But it's an international industry standard and we can't regulate," says Dr Clark.

They also agree that exposure of children is a concern, as their developing tissues are more susceptible to damage.

The Government recommends that under-eights should not use mobile phones at all and under-16s only for "essential calls". The HPA says that although, "there is no clear evidence of harm from cordless phones, parents can take a precautionary approach and prevent children using them".

Christine Garnier, a 45-year old company bookkeeper from Jersey, has no doubt this is a good idea.

She had two cordless phones in her house when a local protest against a mobile mast made her think again about the technology she used. She got rid of them, "and within 24 hours I felt a sort of pressure in my head go. But the real change was in Thomas".

Her six-year-old son had been having sleep problems, often said he felt sick after being in the house after school and was temperamental. "As soon as I got rid of the phones, he became calmer and slept much better."

Dr Goldsworthy believes that "probably everyone is being affected to some degree".

Others say that only "electrosensitive" people are significantly affected and, although their resulting conditions can be serious, they account for only three per cent of the population.

Professor Hardell claims that, whatever the disagreement over the source or severity of short-term symptoms, in the longer term, "we can expect an increase in diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's due to neurological damage and tumours."

While there is no consensus on the degree of risk from mobile and Dect apparatus, both sides recognise that the UK's accepted exposure limit is the highest in Europe.

At the Human Health in an Electro-Technological World conference where Professor Hardell presented his findings last November, the scientists who helped set these levels were roundly criticised. David Dean, among others, is quietly applauding.

'Cancer link' to heavy mobile use
Heavy mobile phone use may be linked to an increased risk of cancer of the salivary gland, a study suggests.

Researchers looked at 500 Israelis who had developed the condition and compared their mobile phone usage with 1,300 healthy controls.

Those who had used the phone against one side of the head for several hours a day were 50% more likely to have developed a salivary gland tumour.

The research appeared in The American Journal of Epidemiology.

Numerous studies have focused on the risk of tumours among those who use mobile phones, and overwhelmingly found no increased cancer risk.

But researchers at Tel Aviv University say these have tended to focus on brain tumours, and often did not include long-term users.

Cancer of the salivary gland is a very rare condition. Of the 230,000 cases of cancer diagnosed in the UK for instance annually, only 550 relate to this area.

Mixed messages

Dr Siegal Sadetzki, who led the research, said while mobile phone use in Israel was much heavier than in many other parts of the world, this gave an insight into what the long-term, cumulative impact could be.

Precautions should be taken in order to diminish the exposure and lower the risk for health hazards
Dr Siegal Sadetzki

"Compared to other studies, the amount of exposure to radiofrequency radiation we saw here was much higher. If you like, you're seeing what could happen elsewhere 'speeded-up' in Israel," she said.

One of the key findings of the study was that heavy users in rural areas had an even higher risk that those in cities, due, the team suggested, to the fact that mobile phones in areas without strong signals need to emit more radiation to work properly.

But Dr Sadetzki stressed one study was not enough to prove a link, and that further research was needed.

Nonetheless, until more evidence became available, a "precautionary" approach was best, she said, particularly when it comes to children's use of mobile phones.

Despite these latest findings, the largest and longest-running investigation ever to be carried out into mobile phone usage found no increased risk of any sort of cancer.

It followed 420,000 people in Denmark, some of whom had been using a mobile phone for as long as ten years.

There was in fact a lower incidence of cancer than expected in a group of that size, suggesting mobile phones had no impact on the development of tumours.

Last year, the UK's Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research Programme said that while the evidence so far was "reassuring", there was still a need for studies to examine the very long-term impact, and to look at the effect in children.

Ed Yong, of Cancer Research UK, said: "Mobile phones are a relatively recent invention and new research into any possible health risks is welcome.

"However, it's important to remember that the vast majority of studies so far have found that mobile phones do not increase the risk of any type of cancer."

From Alfonso Balmori:

Very probably bisphenol-A (in plastic) is acting in the deterioration of the quality of the sperm in human for several decades. However the more abrupt deterioration of the quality of the sperm has taken place in the last years: In Spain more than a third (36%) of the procedures of artificial fecundation is for masculine cause , of low seminal quality. The percentage went up five points among the years 2003 and 2004, the last of that the Spanish Society of Fertility has figures. It seems that this is related with an intensive use of mobiles telephones (Much higher in the last years).

Subject: Fw: Japanese Interphone Results & Finnish Cell Phone Experiment

Dear Colleagues:

Last week, the Interphone results from Japan were published and the press welcomed them as a sign that cell phones are safe. Much of that may havebeen due to a press release from Cancer Research UK, a charitable organization. It stated that "Studies have shown no evidence that mobilephone use is harmful." Anyone who has been following the literature knows that this is nonsense. Why is a group like Cancer Research covering up the possible health risks?

In fact, the new Japanese study tells us very little about what many of us are concerned about: the long-term risks of using a mobile phone. Earlier this week, a Finnish team reported that a one-hour exposure to cell phone radiation caused measurable changes in the skin of human volunteers. As Dariusz Leszczynski told us, "All this means that the human body recognizes this low-level radiation and reacts to it. "Read both stories on our Web site:

Cell phones and human skin

The Canadian Initiative to stop
Wireless, Electric, and
lectromagnetic Pollution

From Mona Nilsson:
A study on mobile phone radiation effects on humans completed:
Intriguing observations concerning biological effects – influence on health still ambiguous

A new study completed by the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) on effects of the mobile phone radiation on human skin strengthens the results of the human cell line analyses: living tissue responds to mobile phone radiation. The results were published in the web journal of BMC Genomics on February 11, 2008.

Earlier studies have shown that mobile phone radiation (radiofrequency modulated electromagnetic fields; RF-EMF) alters protein expression and activity in human endothelial cell line. STUK’s new study is globally unique, because for the first time it has examined whether a local exposure of human skin to RF-EMF will cause changes in protein expression in living people.

In the study, a small area of forearm’s skin in 10 volunteers was exposed to GSM signal for one hour. After that skin biopsies were collected from exposed and non-exposed areas of skin and all extractable proteins were examined. The analysis of 580 proteins identified 8 proteins that were statistically significantly affected.

”Mobile phone radiation has some biological effect. Even if the changes are small, they still exist”, says Dariusz Leszczynski, Research Professor at STUK.

According to Leszczynski it is much too early to say will these changes induced by the mobile phone radiation have any effect on health.

”The aim of this project was not detecting any possible health effects, but to find out whether living human skin responds to mobile phone radiation and whether proteomics approach is useful in sorting out this issue”, he states.

A more extensive study with 50-100 volunteers is now planned at STUK. If the financing is settled, the study will be launched in 2009.

Funding for the present study was provided by Tekes - Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation and STUK, and it was a part of national HERMO project (Health Risk Assessment of Mobile Communications) finished in September 2007. The entire article Mobile phone radiation might alter protein expression in human skin is available in the BMC Genomics web journal:
